Miracle Fruit Synsepalum dulcificum
miracle fruit, (Synsepalum dulcificum), evergreen shrub of the family Sapotaceae, grown for its mild fruits that make subsequently eaten sour foods taste sweet. The miracle fruit plant is native to tropical West Africa, where it is used locally to sweeten palm wine and other beverages. The unrelated sweet prayer plant (Thaumatococcus daniellii) is also known as miracle fruit for its similar ability to make sour foods taste sweet.
Mechanism of action and uses
The flavor-altering mechanism of miracle fruit is due to a glycoprotein named miraculin, which was first isolated by Japanese researcher Kenzo Kurihara in 1968. Although miraculin itself is not sweet, it binds to receptors on the taste buds and causes acidic foods to be perceived as sweet. The effect typically lasts from a half hour to two hours, with the intensity declining over time.
The fruit has been proposed as a treatment for the taste changes experienced by some chemotherapy patients, though further studies are needed. In the United States an attempt was made in the 1970s to commercialize the fruit extract as a low-calorie or noncaloric sweetener for use by diabetics and dieters, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the product as a food additive requiring further safety testing, and the venture was abandoned. Similarly, the European Union required a safety assessment before miracle fruit extracts could be used as a food additive, though miraculin has been approved in Japan. The purchase of powdered or whole fruits is legal in most places, and the fruit is commonly consumed as a novelty.
Synsepalum dulcificum is a plant in the Sapotaceae family, native to tropical Africa. It is known for its berry that, when eaten, causes sour foods (such as lemons and limes) subsequently consumed to taste sweet. This effect is due to miraculin. Common names for this species and its berry include miracle fruit, miracle berry, miraculous berry, sweet berry, and in West Africa, where the species originates, agbayun (in Yoruba), taami, asaa, and ledidi.
The berry itself has a low sugar content and a mildly sweet tang. It contains a glycoprotein molecule, with some trailing carbohydrate chains, called miraculin. When the fleshy part of the fruit is eaten, this molecule binds to the tongue's taste buds, causing sour foods to taste sweet. At neutral pH, miraculin binds and blocks the receptors, but at low pH (resulting from ingestion of sour foods) miraculin binds proteins and becomes able to activate the sweet receptors, resulting in the perception of sweet taste. This effect lasts until the protein is washed away by saliva (up to about 30 minutes).
The names miracle fruit and miracle berry are shared by Gymnema sylvestre and Thaumatococcus daniellii, which are two other species used to alter the perceived sweetness of foods.

Rooted in Christ
My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be my disciples.1
If you are blessed with a "green thumb", then you probably thrive with gardening. Watching your seeds grow into seedlings and then full-grown plants and trees that bear various kinds of fruits and vegetables. I myself have never had the privilege of seeing more than green leaves but I love seeing the fruit that others grow — especially when they share it with me! Recently, my sister and her family took to planting fruit trees and a garden, and as we enter summer, the limes and lemons, apples and avocados, are showing off. In the garden, however, the carrots are not so proud. Having been planted in shallow soil the normally long, slender vegetable has grown short and a bit, well, fat! Upon first inspection, the long greenery growing out of the soil seemed to suggest a healthy crop, so its actual growth has proved awkward!
This makes me think of Christians — you know, the ones that go to church every Sunday, and even participate in weekday activities…but that's it. They don't spend time in the Bible and so they boast plenty of "greenery", but their fruit is lacking. You see, God's Word is what helps us grow spiritually and when we plant our seeds in God's Word our roots grow deep, allowing us to bear full and healthy fruit. We can look right on the surface, but instead of boasting full grown fruit, it's shallow and "fat".
God wants us to bear fruit; full grown and healthy fruit. Jesus made this clear when He said, "By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples" (John 15:8). But most of all, He wants us to know Him and experience Him—He wants us to develop the fruit of intimacy; rooted and growing in Him. All other fruit in our lives flows from this first fruit, and when we bear this fruit, we are fulfilling our ultimate purpose. But when we choose to live our Christianity on our own, the fruit we bear becomes stunted.
You've already accepted Christ, now spend time with Him and allow the fruit you bear come forth full and abundant, boasting that your roots are grounded deep in God's Word. No half-grown, fat fruit here!
Suggested Prayer: Dear Lord, You created me to bring forth fruit, your fruit, growing from seeds that have been rooted in You. Help me to spend time in Your Word and always abide in You. Let my fruit be a testimony of my relationship with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
John 15:8 (CSB).

6/18 Plant Updates!
Randy, my basil plant, is thriving and leafy and beautiful and oh my god what do I do with all this basil?
Meet Gruyère! My new lemon lime prayer plant! He’s been a wonderful addition to my home!
This Swiss Cheese plant is Montoya, don’t tell the others but he might be my favorite leafy child!
Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf are all starting to get really tall. I thought they were blooming but it looks like they might just need more sunlight, so I’ve moved them to a window well and hopefully that’ll help.
Not looking so great:
Uma and Vincent, my petunias. I’m thinking they were overwatered from the sprinklers outside. I just moved them and hopefully that helps.
Yotsuyu, my purple spiderwort, she flowered a couple of times and despite nothing changing, got fungus gnats and I think they’ve done irreversible damage. Hoping I can save her still :(
RIP to:
Saria, my hen and chick succulent, I noticed she was dying and after investigating what was wrong I discovered all of her roots had died and I spent several weeks trying to revive her in vain. She never rerooted and eventually crossed the rainbow bridge.
Audrey II, my Venus fly trap. I didn’t expect him to live long as I bought him in a grocery store and he refused to eat, but I certainly tried. :(

I finally found the maranta I was searching high and low for! This doesn't do its sheer size any justice, because it is huge and is already vining perfectly.

No I switched to using filtered water when I got my first prayer plant, what I do is fill an old water bottle that would otherwise go unused with filtered water and let it sit for a few hours so it's at room temp and they've all been happy with that :) they also don't like to have dry soil like ever I've noticed? I recommend starting with a calathea rattlesnake or a maranta lemon lime (or red depending on which you like more) since they're the easiest prayer plants to care for!! Prayer plants can be super tricky but once you figure them out they are beautiful :) & I felt sooo lucky when I found my stromanthe triostar! I went to pick up a pilea and a tradescantia and walked out with my DREAM PLANT it was such a great day!!
LOVE variegated plants they're always so pretty!! I hope the propagating goes well if you do end up doing it :]
I am no longer ordering an absurd amount of succulents. Time to fill my greenhouse :) ordered 3 today I'll post them when they're here hehehehe

Sad little update
Got this plant as a cutting which was going wild in the prop box. But soon after it was removed, chaos took way and it’s gone downhill since. Everyone a leaf grows, the old one dies off. It’s been this way for months and I felt like giving up on it. However, I’m keeping my head up as it now lives in the detolf. Hopefully it comes back to life.

My little maranta ‘lemon lime’ is a plant that has grown on me a fair bit. I think because she sits on a clock in my room so I see her in the morning and evening she has become a plant I am quite fond of. I cant get over how lovely the leaves look, and the texture- oh I love a good plant texture. I’m always touching plant leaves because of it
