Day 67- Film (number 2): The Atomic City
Release date: May 1st, 1952.
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Thriller/noir
Director: Jerry Hopper
Producer: Joseph Sistrom
Actors: Gene Barry, Lydia Clarke, Michael Moore, Nancy Gates, Lee Aaker
Plot Summary: A leading nuclear scientist working on the Hydrogen bomb at Los Alamos finds out his son has been kidnapped. But the ransom the kidnappers want is much more consequential than money. They want the secret of the bomb instead.
My Rating (out of five stars): ***½
Both the films I watched today were about nuclear weapons, but this is the one that was actually pretty good. It was an enjoyable engaging thriller that did leave you thinking, even if it wasn’t a perfect film.
The Good:
All the location shooting! This was apparently the first film shot at Los Alamos. There was also a long baseball game scene in a real stadium, and footage from the Puye Cliff Dwellings in NM. It all looked impressive.
The long scene in the baseball stadium. It was great as a time capsule to see what going to a game then was like. It was great as a vehicle to show the technology the FBI used to catch criminals. It was also just an eerie and suspenseful scene.
The nitty gritty of the FBI following suspects. We get lots of time to watch the FBI do their jobs- surveilling, following leads, chasing cars, using film and other technologies, etc...
The little child actor who played Tommy. He was really good! Near the end, I almost couldn’t watch, because the character had been put through so much, I kept reminding myself it was just a movie, and the kid was totally fine.
I generally liked the actors who played both parents. The dad kind of looked the Jeff Chandler. The mom was really beautiful and interesting, but she didn’t have much to do in this except worry.
It was definitely suspenseful!
It raised a lot of interesting “what if” questions. Even just the basic “What if this happened in real life?” But more so, the question of what is more important, the life of one little boy, or the lives of millions? Would a father ever willingly sacrifice his son to save the rest of the world? Would a country do that to one of its citizens?Etc.
I appreciated the way things were relatively free of sensationalism or sentimentality. Everything was mostly matter-of-fact in tone. The Feds were just focused on doing their jobs, not really moralizing or hyping things up and getting hysterical. That element reminded me a lot of Dragnet.
The Bad:
The ending was a bit abrupt.
The lack of information about the “bad guys.” We know they are communists. Were they spies? Terrorists? From where? What was the punishment for the one guy who was definitely alive at the end? We never find out.
