Dan Herbert submitted this photo with the comment “Me up a Leamington Spa tree. Early 90s”.
I especially appreciate a 90s goth up a tree because it validates the vague existence of this blog (although it’s more of a blob than a blog these days) by providing some photographic evidence that goths have likely been getting up trees since there have been trees and surly black wearers in close proximity to one another. If someone could provide evidence of Victorian era black-wearing friends up trees that would entice me to post more often. Maybe.
This goth reminds me of the guitarist from my older brother’s teenage grunge band from the 90s. Pretty sure he wasn’t in the UK at that time unless he knew about some kind of tree-related portal that was accessible only to stoned people. That’d be right. The atmosphere here is dark and dingy but it’s not night time. The goth isn’t smiling and is a good height up a gnarled oak(?!) tree. Excellent.
4.9 out of 5 - Send me your pics of Victorians in mourning gear up a tree.

From the UK's Imperial War Museum:
In 1939, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, the Air Ministry began an extensive programme of disguising industrial buildings, typically with images of the suburbs. Colin Moss was employed on this programme and was transferred to the Ministry of Home Security's Camouflage Directorate at Leamington Spa at the outbreak of war. Along with other artists, he was given a months leave to record his designs, in this case Stonebridge Park Power Station near Wembley.
I hadn't thought about the idea of camouflaging infrastructure, but it makes sense. I'm also glad that the powers that be gave the artists time to capture the images of what would otherwise almost certainly be completely forgotten.
The power station, by the way, was coal-fired, and powered the London and North Western Railway and its successors, up to and including British Rail. It closed in 1967 and has since been demolished.

Enhancing Sustainability: Birmingham's Waste Collection System
Birmingham, one of the UK's largest cities, has a comprehensive waste collection system that plays a crucial role in promoting sustainability and environmental conservation. With a growing population and increasing urbanization, effective waste management has become imperative for maintaining the city’s cleanliness and ecological health.
A Multi-Faceted Approach
Birmingham's waste collection system is designed to handle various types of waste, including household refuse, recyclables, garden waste, and bulky items. The city employs a structured weekly collection schedule to ensure that waste is managed efficiently. Residents are provided with different bins: a general waste bin, a recycling bin, and a garden waste bin, each designated for specific types of waste. This segregation at the source significantly aids in the recycling process, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
Recycling Initiatives
Recycling is a cornerstone of Birmingham Waste Collection waste management strategy. The city encourages residents to recycle paper, cardboard, glass, metals, and certain plastics. The local government has invested in public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the importance of recycling and proper waste disposal. These initiatives include distributing informational leaflets, organizing community workshops, and leveraging social media platforms to reach a broader audience.
Moreover, Birmingham operates several recycling centers where residents can drop off additional recyclables, such as electronics, batteries, and textiles. These centers are strategically located to ensure accessibility for all residents, further promoting recycling participation.
Technological Integration
Birmingham has embraced technology to enhance the efficiency of its waste collection system. The use of GPS-enabled waste collection trucks allows for optimized routing, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Additionally, the city has implemented an online portal and mobile app where residents can view collection schedules, report missed collections, and request special pickups. This digital integration not only improves service delivery but also fosters a more engaged and informed community.
Addressing Challenges
Despite these advancements, Birmingham faces several challenges in waste management. Contamination of recyclables remains a significant issue, as improper disposal can render entire batches of recyclables unusable. To combat this, the city continues to emphasize the importance of proper waste sorting through education and enforcement.
Furthermore, Birmingham is exploring innovative solutions to deal with non-recyclable waste. The city is investing in waste-to-energy technologies that convert waste into electricity, thereby reducing landfill dependency and generating renewable energy.
Looking Forward
Birmingham's commitment to sustainable waste management is evident in its continuous efforts to improve and innovate. The city's waste collection system is a dynamic model that adapts to emerging environmental challenges and technological advancements. By fostering a culture of responsibility and sustainability among its residents, Birmingham is paving the way for a cleaner, greener future.
In conclusion, Birmingham’s waste collection system is a vital component of the city’s sustainability agenda. Through effective management, technological integration, and community engagement, Birmingham is making significant strides in waste reduction and environmental conservation.

Big Wolf Band - Rebel's Journey
Release Date: 19 Apr 2024
Hailed by music pundits as most highly anticipated album collection of songs of their career, "Rebel’s Journey" is Big Wolf Band’s second instalment of the Rebel’s trilogy of albums. The new album is about the growth of the band and frontman’s Jonathan Earp’s personal journey.
Big Wolf Band have built a reputation as being one of the best live bands on the circuit, delivering dynamic shows with an expansive range of self-penned songs that cover all flavours of blues rock that truly makes them unique. Rebel’s Journey reinforces this bands creativity, musicianship, and delivery. Each song having its own identity but still that unmistakable Big Wolf sound. The band’s ability to drift between genres while keeping their own sound is a big selling point amongst followers of the band.
Vocalist and guitarist Jonathan Earp says, “Rebel’s Journey highlights my own personal battle with my mental and physical health. I have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (HEDS) which affects everything. I had surgery in mid-2019 during our 'Be Free' tour to repair damage to my right shoulder, dislocations, and nerve pain. Unfortunately, the operation caused more pain and numbness and for nearly 2 years I struggled to play, some days to even hold a plectrum."
"Songs like 'Standing in the Rain', 'Black Dog Blues', and 'Living on Borrowed Time' are about the battles I had during those dark days. My condition will always be a challenge but one I live with and continue to prove doubters wrong.
"The album isn’t all doom and gloom, despite being in the blues genre. 'Empire and a Prayer', my first co-written song with Justin Johnson, as well as 'Got Me Reeling' and 'Living on Borrowed Time'. We have had many a joke with my dark writing style, Justin brings the light and love. 'Rise Together' is one of the songs on the album I am proud of and is all about the power of love, rising together and that anything is possible.”
Big Wolf Band were recently nominated for “UK Blues Band of the Year” at the 2024 UK Blues Awards.

Empty Child Syndrome
In January of 1941, as global war raged, a mystery illness spread amongst the people of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
1941 saw the tail end of the Blitz, a World War II event wherein the Germans heavily bombed the UK capital of London. 40,000 civilians were killed in the bombings, but some in the Tower Hamlets borough faced an altogether stranger fate. Something fell on Limehouse Green railway station that was not a bomb. A long, cylindrical object that did not explode on impact though, unfortunately, claimed one victim: a small boy, wandering alone during an air raid.
The boy was taken to Albion Hospital. His condition was critical. He suffered head trauma, partial collapse of his chest cavity, a gash on the back of his hand, and his gas mask fused to his skin. By all accounts, he should have been dead and was declared as such. However, the boy awoke, asking "where's my mummy?"
We know from tape recordings taken by a Dr. Constantine that the boy was able to communicate in some limited degree, as the doctor interviewed him in a secure ward in an attempt to further understand the child's strange condition.
Soon, however, everyone who had come into contact with the boy started to become ill. Their mental processes altered, a gash appeared on their hands, their chests collapsed, they began to suffer head trauma despite not being struck by any object, and as their mental faculties were all but lost, a gas mask would grow from their face. Injuries as plague. Once they were gas masked, all they could do was beg for their mothers. Once the illness affected staff, it was not long until all the patients were infected, and soon only the good doctor was left to treat them.
Medical records of patients who suffered the "empty child" plague end there, though none of them were declared deceased. Some surviving records show that many of them were given a clean bill of health and discharged. Could this have been a cover-up of their true fate?
Those who doubt these events happened at all should note that the unexploded "bomb" that seems to have started it all can be found on display at the Leamington Spa Lifeboat Museum, and scans of the medical records of some of the victims can be found online thanks to Medical Research Archivist Kim Plowright and truth seeker Mickey Smith.
The "empty child" plague isn't the only mystery surrounding the Albion Hospital. It is rumoured that in 2006, the body of an alien recovered from a crashed spaceship was taken there for autopsy. Does the Albion have a "secure UNIT mortuary?" Perhaps the empty children are buried there now, slumbering until their mummy comes to wake them up.
