He called her: message bearer

She called him: pursuer

He called her: traitor, prostitute, wretch vomiting in the gutter, laughing jackel, brokenest of broken things, sword in my heart

She called him: lion, clear blue spring, ram in the thicket, grace, laughing-victorious, strider over seas, my-lover-steals-me

He called her: army that sings

She called him: burns without consuming

He called her: who remains, has remained, will always remain

She called him: arriver

He called her: you are altogether beautiful my love, there is no flaw in you

She called him: the first time you called, I didn't come

their sweet strawberry fields

campfire songs & burning meals

they become each other's shield

Things My Little Sister Loves

My mom. My dad. The dog.

Macaroni and cheese

with too much cheese.

Books with happy endings.

Music that makes you cry.

Candles and perfume--

(light florals).

Trying to explain color.

Telling me I'm wrong about chiaroscuro.

Buying more pencils.

Light. Darkness. Color. Fruit.

The way the word "citrus" sounds

And how lemons look embroidered on pieces

of cloth.

Pictures of Jesus hugging little children.

Stories about people who look a lot like Jesus.

Getting in the car and not stopping.

Music not loud but throbbing.

Having a full backseat.

Taking pictures and trying to remember.

Telling everybody where to sit.

Rewatching old episodes.

Going to bed late.

Too long hugs

When I finally come home.

And because you are of a kind, the house knows

you. When you cry out,

the lights flicker, ghostly blue and ragged.

When she says you are shut off,

the light switches nod their white tiny

heads. Tiles creak yes beneath her

edicts—something bad must have happened

to make you this way, the way

where you don’t want her. But the windows

rattle, disagree. In their honeyed,

blindless light, they see it—something bad

is happening.
