World Watch: Lea Porcelain
World Watch: @LeaPorcelain German alt. rock duo master layered soundscapes to create a brooding but surprisingly effective emotional harmony @Karteltweets #newmusic #altrock #postpunk #Berlin #germany #poolsong
Country: Germany Alt rock duo Lea Porcelain, in the four years since releasing their debut album Hymns to the Night, have become one of Germany’s most intriguing musical exports. Their brooding, post-punk sound meshing elements of Joy Division, Editors and Radiohead, builds off intense layering of soundscapes. Droning guitars, eerie keyboards and haunting vocals come together to create a…

Lea Porcelain - Hymns to the Night
Tumblr media
I’m not sure what the most surprising thing about Lea Porcelain is. That they’re only a duo, that they’re from Germany, that this is their first album, or that I can’t seem to stop listening to it? If it weren’t for the amazing KEXP, I might never have heard of this band. Why more people aren’t talking about them I don’t know, but I’m going to enjoy access to this special club while I can.
I’ve listened to this album so many times and I still hear something new. It’s a sensation I’ve rarely found with recent albums (except the wonderful Slowdive). Are they embarking on a whole new genre, or just continuing an old one? I can’t decide. It’s hard not to compare their darkness with Joy Division, their shimmering layers of sound to The Cure, and their vocals to Echo and the Bunnymen. They evoke these bands without ever ripping them off; bringing a lovely kind of post-punk nostalgia while still sounding totally unique.
Bones is sure to be a crowd pleaser (watch this great video featuring Bones and singer/guitarist Marcus discussing a dream about departed relatives). The haunting and severe Loose Life I have played at dangerous levels on many a night-drive home. Similar Familiar starts off like a pretty solid dance track until a wickedly menacing synth kicks in and has Marcus singing “Fear isn’t the only thing that I fear”.
Album-closer Endlessly took some time to grow on me, but I’m glad it did. It starts with the band channeling early U2 then the slow rolling track eventually amps up, exploding into a Depeche Mode-inspired synth banger. IF there is a low point, it’s the ukulele-lead (a real uke or an effect?) A Year From Here, but everything else just sounds so fucking good, I usually just skip past it.
But my favorite song is easily Warsaw Street, with it’s raw vocals, love-torn lyrics and some seriously gorgeous layers of synth and guitar, it reminds me of everything I love about my favorite post-punk 80’s bands. This album is lush, romantic, and fully immersive.
I hope more people take notice of this band, but then again maybe it’d be nice to have something so good kept a secret for a change.

LEA PORCELAIN  “Remember”
Berlin/London two-piece Lea Porcelain will release their debut album “Hymns To The Night” on June 16th. Today you can listen to a new song from it, called “Remember”, a melancholic, nocturnal post punk gem that delivers an immediate emotional grip, mixing dizzy synths, reverberated guitars and Ian Curtis-style vocals.

Lea Porcelain - Hymns To The Night
Hymns To The Night seeks to further continue the magic of Lea Porcelain's, now almost 2 years on from their impactful debut EP.
In 2015, the German duo released their self-titled EP, a four track wonder that captured our attention and cultivated a refreshing take on post-punk. Now in 2017, Hymns To The Night seeks to further continue the magic of Lea Porcelain’s early achievements, however, the success of this is debatable. (more…)
