La marcia su Rama

Siccome ogni giorno ha la sua comica, anzi due o tre, noi siamo irresistibilmente attratti dallo storico accordo Italia-Albania per la deportazione di una quota infinitesimale dei migranti che il governo anti-migranti è riuscito a raddoppiare: la famosa marcia su Rama. I tecnici ministeriali stimavano un costo di 100 milioni l’anno. Ma in pochi giorni il preventivo è già raddoppiato a 200 milioni l’anno per 5 anni (semprechè qualche essere senziente non chiuda il rubinetto). Se si pensa che i 10 nuovi Cpr previsti in Italia costeranno 19 milioni l’anno, viene da scompisciarsi. Anche perché, su 153 mila migranti sbarcati nel 2023, i due costosissimi Cpr albanesi potranno ospitarne 720 per volta. E non si sa quanto i graditi ospiti vi verranno trattenuti: se resteranno un mese, come sostiene metà del governo (opzione A), la capienza sarà di 9 mila all’anno; ma se resteranno fino a 18 mesi, come sostiene l’altra metà del governo (opzione B), l’Albania ne prenderà 720 ogni anno e mezzo. Cioè: i Salvini&Meloni che tuonavano contro i 35 euro al giorno spesi dalla sinistra per ogni migrante, ne spenderanno 761 al giorno e 277.777 l’anno nell’opzione A; e 63,4 al giorno e 23.148 l’anno nell’opzione B.. In ogni caso, tanto varrebbe affittare a ciascuno una villetta o pagargli una suite al grand hotel. Un capolavoro. E i preventivi sono ancora provvisori, visto che non basterà deportare in Albania i famosi 720 migranti: siccome paga tutto Roma e niente Tirana, bisognerà assumere e spedire in loco 45 funzionari civili e altri 10 dell’amministrazione penitenziaria, più altri 18 amministrativi e 30 assistenti in collegamento con 10 magistrati della Procura di Roma, oltre a 5 medici, 4 infermieri, 2 funzionari amministrativi sanitari e poi agenti di polizia à gogo con imbarcazioni e voli charter per trasbordare i migranti dall’Albania all’Italia, senza contare il sovraccarico burocratico di ricorsi e controricorsi per la “soluzione” extraterritoriale (ed extraeuropea). Una farsa così imbarazzante che nessun ministro ha voluto metterci la faccia. E quando diciamo nessuno intendiamo Tajani che, non riuscendo a giustificare i 200 milioni buttati, ha detto che comunque “sono molti meno di quelli sequestrati per la malagestione del Superbonus” (che il suo partito vuole prorogare). Se è per questo, sono molti meno anche dei 368 milioni di dollari frodati al fisco dal suo leader B. nel solo caso dei diritti Mediaset. Perciò temiamo che la diffida legale di Sangiuliano a Un giorno da pecora a non prenderlo più in giro, ove mai fosse presa sul serio da Geppi Cucciari e Giorgio Lauro, non sortisca l’effetto sperato. Per il governo-vaudeville non c’è più bisogno di satira, parodie e battute: si prendono in giro da soli.

Una giornata di sole

È una giornata piena di sole, una di quelle in cui egli trascorre un'ora al balcone a capo scoperto, come gli ha consigliato il medico. La sua carnagione, di solito, è pallida, ma il sottotono olivastro della sua pelle gli impedisce di arrossarsi e scottarsi, cosicché egli si abbronza, assumendo un'aria più sana. Ed �� solo per esibire al medico questa illusione di salute che si sottopone al bagno di sole. Gli chiedo, mentre guardo la strada sottostante, popolata di venditori ambulanti e ragazzetti che si rincorrono, se avverta un miglioramento nelle proprie condizioni. "Sì, come ogni anno quando finisce l'inverno," ma conclude la frase con un colpo di tosse. Volgo le spalle alla ringhiera del balcone e immergo gli occhi nella penombra della stanza dove in fondo, proprio sopra il letto, sulla parete azzurra, è appeso un grande rosario dai grani di legno scuro. "E così reciti le preghiere prima di andare a dormire," dico per scherzo. "Oh sì," risponde lui con gravità, "tridui e novene".

"Quella ragazzetta ha lo sguardo vispo," sussurro accennando a colei che sembra affaccendarsi riassettando le carte sopra uno scrittoio. "Ti assiste con amore?" "Amore di carità," soggiunge lui. "Le invidio che sappia leggere il greco, il latino e il francese; sapessi farlo anch'io, le farei recuperare tutto il sonno che ha perduto in queste notti." La ragazza esce dalla stanza senza salutare, con passo zoppicante, ma leggero. Ha lasciato sullo scrittoio una Bibbia, accanto a un'Iliade.

"Nella Bibbia è scritto che i morti dormono," dico trasognata. "E nell'Ade gli eroi non sono altro che ombre," prosegue lui. "Ma allora, se questa vita è sogno, e poi continueremo a dormire, non ci sveglieremo mai? Conosceremo soltanto il sonno?"

Lui tiene gli occhi chiusi al sole. "Io credo che stiamo facendo esattamente ciò a cui la necessità ci spinge. Tutto in noi è materia," prosegue. "Da bambino trascorrevo molte ore in ginocchio, pregando di essere risparmiato dall'inferno; poi da ragazzo sognai di poter entrare in paradiso con una corona di lauro. In realtà non ci spettano premii né castighi, dal momento che siamo esseri governati dalla fortuna. L'unico bene sarebbe non ricordare mai più di essere stati, e che qualcosa vi sia".

"E se la tua coscienza sopravvivesse?"

"Immagino che la natura dei morti non li faccia riguardare più la vita. In nessun modo. L'istinto di conservazione, la speranza...sono nelle fibre di questa carne."

"Torneresti?..." gli chiedo.

"Se fosse utile."

"A te o ad altri?"

"A chiunque, anche a un topolino. Purché ne avessi certezza."

"Se gli dei vogliono continuare a giocare con noi, dovranno farlo a carte scoperte," azzardo.

"Vorrei non capirli mai, gli dei."

"Ma se hai detto che vuoi certezza..."

"Ho risposto alla tua domanda: mi chiedevi se sarei tornato, non cosa volessi. Io voglio esattamente questo silenzio, questo mistero, in cui si è identici a prima di nascere e si può ignorare sia la vita che la morte, e che esistono differenze. Se un dio si chiarisse, ci darebbe la vita, e con essa la morte."

"Infatti Dio si è espresso," spiego accennando alla Bibbia.

"No," dici: "Quello lo abbiamo sognato..."

"Sai qual è l'espressione più evidente di Dio?" Lancio la sfida, e proseguo: "Quella ragazza. Si sacrifica per te, e potrebbe non farlo. Questo si chiama libero arbitrio, non necessità".

"Lo fa per ambizione," sorride amaramente, "vuole diventare santa, per compiacere suo fratello, l'unico uomo che non l'abbandonerà. Se morissi prima di stanotte, per lei sarebbe un sollievo."

"Che dici!" Protesto. Ma dentro di me so ch'è vero.

"Io e lei siamo due infelici che non s'incontreranno mai. E ora sono stanco, vorrei riposare un po'."

Lo accompagno a letto. Gli sistemo i due grossi cuscini che tiene sotto la testa e, mentre lo faccio, avverto qualcosa di duro tra l'uno e l'altro. "E questi?" Dico, vedendo un cartoccio di confetti.

"Me li ha regalati lei. La mia dolce morte. Stanotte, lei potrà finalmente riposare."

"Piantala," gli dico brusca. "Stanotte penserò io a intrattenerti. Ti leggerò le mie poesie e i miei racconti."

"Tu scrivi?" Chiede con una sfumatura sarcastica, inarcando leggermente le sopracciglia.

"Ma certo. Ti ho dedicato tante poesie..." Gliene recito subito una.

"Sono frasi, non è poesia. Non c'è metrica. E il linguaggio è colloquiale, direi trasandato."

"Questa è poesia contemporanea," spiego. "Si chiamano versi liberi."

"I versi sciolti sono tutt'altra cosa..."

"Infatti questi non sono sciolti, ma proprio liberi. Come i pensieri, come il vento..." sorrido. "Vuoi provare anche tu?"

"Certo. Sembra facile come parlare nel sonno."

Io assaggio un confetto, mentre lui sussurra con aria canzonatoria: "Dalla vita  volevo fuggir via,

perché la morte sola beltà mi apparia;

ma la mia vile anima immortale

mi parla e dice che ancora avrò a dare

e la beltà di ciò che darò

è così grande che più non morirò!"

"Ecco, bravo," lo incoraggio ridendo. Forse attratta dalle risate, entra la graziosa ragazzetta zoppa. "Vuoi?" Dico offrendole il cartoccio di confetti. "Questo screanzato li aveva rubati per suicidarsi prima di stanotte," dico scrollando il capo.

Lei arrossisce e si torce le mani. "Il suicidio è peccato mortale..." finge di rimproverare il malato con lo sguardo fisso alla punta delle proprie scarpe. Esce portandosi via i confetti.

"E ora?" Mi chiede lui.

"Faremo versi tutto il pomeriggio e la notte. I più liberi e sciocchi che riusciremo a fare. Ma prima voglio leggerti un mio racconto."

"Come s'intitola?" Chiede rassegnato.

"Una giornata di sole"...

As I try to cover the news tonight, I am struck by how completely the Republican Party, which began in the 1850s as a noble endeavor to keep the United States government intact and to rebuild it to work for ordinary people, has devolved into a group of chaos agents feeding voters a fantasy world. 

The big news today was the hearing in Washington, D.C., where Department of Justice prosecutors argued for a protective order to stop former president Trump from intimidating witnesses and tainting the jury pool in the case against him for trying to stop the counting of electoral votes that would decide the 2020 presidential election. 

Trump appears to have given up on winning the cases against him on the legal merits and is instead trying to win by whipping up a political base to reelect him, or even to fight for him. He has filled his Truth Social account with unhinged rants attacking the justice system and the president, and on Sunday his lawyer, John Lauro, echoed Trump as he made a tour of the Sunday talk shows, misleadingly suggesting that Trump had been indicted for free speech. In fact, the indictment says up front that even Trump’s lies are protected by the First Amendment, but what isn’t protected is a conspiracy that stops an official proceeding and deprives the rest of us of our right to vote and to have our votes counted. 

A grand jury indicted Trump on August 1; when he was arraigned on August 3, the magistrate judge warned him that it is a crime to “influence a juror or try to threaten or bribe a witness or retaliate against anyone" connected to the case. Trump said he understood. 

The next day, he posted on Truth Social: “IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I’M COMING AFTER YOU!” 

Justice Department lawyers promptly sought a protective order to limit what information Trump and his lawyers can release. Trump has a longstanding pattern of releasing misleading information to bolster his position among his base, and lawyers are concerned that he will continue to intimidate witnesses and try to taint the jury pool in hopes of getting the trial venue moved.

Days later, Trump told an audience in New Hampshire that he would not stop talking about the case, and called Special Counsel Jack Smith a “thug” and “deranged.” He has continued to post such messages on social media.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan reinforced that Trump’s focus on politics had no relevance in her court of law. Justice reporter for NBC News Ryan Reilly noted: “The word of the Trump hearing today: yield. Came up six times, as in: ‘the fact that he's running a political campaign currently has to yield to the orderly administration of justice.’”

Chutkan agreed to the protective order but agreed with Trump’s team that it would not include any material already in the public domain. She also prohibited Trump from reviewing materials with “any device capable of photocopying, recording, or otherwise replicating the Sensitive Materials, including a smart cellular device.”

Finally, she warned Trump’s lawyers: “I caution you and your client to take special care in your public statements in this case…. I will take whatever measures are necessary to protect the integrity of these proceedings.” If Trump repeats “inflammatory” statements, she said, she will have to speed up his trial to protect witnesses and keep the jury pool untainted.

Just what that might mean was illustrated today when a judge revoked the bail of former FTX cryptocurrency chief executive officer Sam Bankman-Fried for witness tampering and sent him to jail. Prosecutors say Bankman-Fried was leaking the private diary entries of his former girlfriend to the New York Times to discredit her testimony against him.

In Ohio, where voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected the attempt of the Republicans in the legislature to stop a November vote on an amendment to the state constitution protecting abortion rights, Republicans tried to stop the inclusion of that amendment by challenging its form. Today the Ohio Supreme Court unanimously rejected that lawsuit. The proposed amendment will be on the ballot in November. 

After demanding that David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in charge of investigating and charging Hunter Biden, be named a special counsel and then charging that Weiss had asked for and been denied that status—both he and Attorney General Merrick Garland denied that allegation—Republicans are now angry that Garland today gave Weiss that status. 

Weiss requested that status for the first time earlier this week, and Garland granted it, although both Weiss and Garland had previously said Weiss had all the authority that status carries. Now House Republicans say appointing Weiss a special counsel is an attempt to obstruct Congress from investigating the Bidens. For all that Republicans are in front of the cameras every day insisting President Biden is corrupt, there is no evidence that President Biden has been party to any wrongdoing.

One of the things such behavior accomplishes is to distract from the party’s own troubles, including the inability of House Republicans to agree to measures to fund the government after September. Far-right extremists are still angry at the spending levels to which House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) agreed in a deal to raise the debt ceiling last June, and are threatening to refuse to agree to any funding measures until they get cuts that the Senate will never accept. 

The House left for its August break after passing only one of the twelve bills it needs to pass, and when it gets back, it will have only twelve work days before the September 30 deadline. This chaos takes a toll: when the Fitch rating system downgraded the U.S. long-term rating last week, the first reason it cited was “a steady deterioration in standards of governance.” It explained: “The repeated debt-limit political standoffs and last-minute resolutions have eroded confidence in fiscal management.” 

Another thing this chaos does is convince individuals that the entire government is corrupt. On Wednesday, as Biden was to visit Utah, FBI agents shot and killed an armed man there who made threats against him, Vice President Kamala Harris, and other officials who have been associated with Trump’s legal troubles: Attorney General Garland, Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, and New York attorney general Letitia James. Craig Deleeuw Robertson described himself as a “MAGA Trumper.”

It seems we are reaping the fruits of the political system planted in 1968, when the staff of Republican presidential candidate Richard Nixon reworked American politics to package their leader for the election. “Voters are basically lazy,” one of Nixon’s media advisors wrote. “Reason requires a high degree of discipline, of concentration; impression is easier. Reason pushes the viewer back, it assaults him, it demands that he agree or disagree; impression can envelop him, invite him in, without making an intellectual demand…. When we argue with him, we…seek to engage his intellect…. The emotions are more easily roused, closer to the surface, more malleable.”

The confusion also takes up so much oxygen it’s hard for the Democrats, who are actually trying to govern in the usual ways, to get any attention. Today was the one-year anniversary of the PACT Act, officially known as the Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act of 2022. The law improves access to healthcare and funding for veterans who were exposed to burn pits, the military’s waste disposal method for everything from tires to chemicals and jet fuel from the 1990s into the new century. 

According to Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), the PACT Act has already enabled more than 4 million veterans to be screened for toxic exposure, more than 744,000 PACT Act claims have been filed, and hundreds of thousands of veterans have been approved for expanded benefits.

Biden spoke in Utah about the government’s protections for veterans and why they’re important. In addition to the PACT Act, he talked about his recent executive order moving the authority for addressing claims of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and murder outside the chain of command to a specialized independent military unit—a move long championed by survivors and members of Congress.  

Today the White House released a detailed explanation of “Bidenomics” along with resources explaining why the administration has focused on certain areas for public investment and how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act have supported that investment. That collection explains why the administration is overturning forty years of political economy to return to the system on which the U.S. relied from 1933 to 1981, and yet it got far less traction than the fight over the protective order designed to keep Trump from attacking witnesses.

Defendant Trump has never said the words, "I didn't do it." He's been too busy pointing fingers and deflecting and lying.

I’m willing to bet that little detail escaped your attention as easily as it escaped mine:  despite copious opportunities in interviews, speeches at rallies, and rants on his social media platform, Truth Social, Defendant Trump has not come right out and denied the charges he has been accused of.  You’ve heard him say practically everything else – it’s a witch hunt, an illegal prosecution, a coverup of the crimes of the “Biden crime family,” on and on and on.  But you have not heard him say, I did not do it.

Politico today came out with a piece in which they detailed what they called, “the five pillars of his defense.”  They are, “Slow it down,” “Put 2024 politics front and center,” “Accuse Smith of criminalizing speech,” “Question Trump’s intent,” and “Attack D.C..”  Politico claimed to have discerned this strategy from an interview on NPR with Defendant Trump’s latest hire as an attorney, John Lauro.  I read the transcript of the interview, but among his mumblings and equivocations, I didn’t find what I would call any “pillars.”  Lauro, who appears to be positioning himself as the “reasonable one” on the Defendant’s legal team, led with this jewel: “He got advice from counsel — very, very wise and learned counsel — on a variety of constitutional and legal issues. So, it's a very straightforward defense that he had every right to advocate for a position that he believed in and his supporters believed in.” 

The obvious reaction to a description of Defendant Trump’s legal clown car as “wise and learned” is, what planet is this guy speaking from?  But it also rules out the classic position of defendants charged every day with crimes high and low:  SODDI, Some Other Dude Did it, a defense which has been suggested by actual, real learned attorneys all over the place on cable news – that Defendant Trump could claim he was misled by incompetent lawyers, at least one of whom has been sanctioned, and another disbarred for filing cases that wasted the courts’ time.  Then again, maybe it’s a clever move by an eminently reasonable attorney, because it will prevent the prosecution from presenting this photo and asking, “You mean this guy?”

Another theme of the Lauro defense is, “This is the first time in the history of the United States where a sitting administration is criminalizing speech against a prior administration.”

Silly me; I guess I wasn’t listening in a law class I took at West Point when they explained the whole administration v. administration theory of criminal law. Defendant Trump’s complaint isn’t with the Biden administration or even with Special Counsel Smith, it’s with grand jury, 23 American citizens voting in secret, who found that the evidence presented to them by prosecutors was enough to prove by the standard, “more likely than not,” that the Defendant committed the crimes he is accused of. 

Lauro was also good enough to inform us that Defendant Trump will not go to trial next year for conspiracy to defraud and obstruct the government and a government official and deny Americans their right to vote, but instead for his “cause.”  This is the way Lauro put it to NPR: “Well, political speech covers even information that turns out not to be true. So, it's all protected by free speech. But at the bottom, the government will never be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, as I said, that President Trump did not believe in the righteousness of his cause.”

You remember the cause Defendant Trump fought so hard for, don’t you, between November 14, 2020 and January 20, 2021, the dates covered by the indictment?  Having lost the general election by millions of votes and the electoral college by 306 to 232, the same margin Defendant Trump called a “landslide” when he won in 2016, he wanted the results thrown out and to be declared president by fiat.

Boy, was that ever an honorable cause, and boy is that ever a winning strategy.

Gobierno de Nuevo Laredo refuerza cooperación para ampliar beneficios a familias neolaredenses

NUEVO LAREDO, TAM.- El trabajo en conjunto entre los tres niveles gobierno ha sido clave para que los beneficios de la federación lleguen a más familias de Nuevo Laredo, así lo reafirmaron Luis Lauro Reyes Rodriguez, Delegado de programas para el Bienestar en Tamaulipas, José Ramón Gómez Leal, senador de la república y la alcaldesa Carmen Lilia Canturosas Villarreal. Tras encabezar una Asamblea Informativa sobre la Beca Universal de Educación Básica “Rita Cetina”, los funcionarios coincidieron en que se vive una nueva era de cooperación que ha traído grandes beneficios para la ciudadanía, prueba de ello, es este apoyo que recibirán todos los estudiantes de secundaria. Durante el evento que se llevó a cabo en la Secundaria 5, la alcaldesa Carmen Lilia Canturosas Villarreal, ratificó su compromiso de trabajar en conjunto los tres niveles de gobierno para lograr objetivos y beneficios sociales en favor de los neolaredenses. “Es un gusto acompañarlos en esta asamblea informativa sobre la beca ‘Rita Cetina’ que representa un paso significativo en la equidad educativa de nuestro país asegurando que todos los estudiantes de nivel secundaria tengan acceso a los recursos necesarios para continuar con su formación académica”, manifestó. La alcaldesa mencionó que este programa de becas refleja los valores de Rita Cetina donde se asegura que los estudiantes cuenten con los recursos para continuar sus estudios y que la cuestión económica no sea un obstáculo para ello. Subrayó que este esfuerzo es parte del compromiso del Gobierno Federal encabezado por la presidenta de la república la doctora Claudia Sheimbaum Pardo para asegurar que la educación sea accesible para todos los estudiantes. “Aprovecho este espacio para agradecer a la amiga de las y los mexicanos nuestra presidenta de la República la doctora Claudia Sheimbaum por su visión y liderazgo en la implementación de esta iniciativa; como la primera mujer en ocupar la presidencia de México, ha demostrado un compromiso inquebrantable con la educación de nuestros jóvenes”, mencionó. La alcaldesa hizo énfasis de que el Gobierno Municipal, participa activamente con la implementación de 7 becas en todos los niveles educativos con lo que se reafirma el compromiso en favor del bienestar de los jóvenes neolaredenses. En esta asamblea informativa se contó con la presencia de servidores de la Nación quienes entregaron folletos ilustrativos, asimismo despejaron las dudas a los padres de familia sobre el registro para acceder a la beca. Reyes Rodriguez, Delegado de programas para el Bienestar en Tamaulipas, hizo un recorrido de los esfuerzos del ex presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador y de la actual presidenta para establecer los beneficios sociales como becas y otorgarles el rango de constitucionales. El funcionario federal reconoció la labor de la alcaldesa para cambiarle la cara a Nuevo Laredo y anunció una partida de fondos federales para destinarlos a obras de infraestructura y continuar con esta transformación trabajando en coordinación con todos los niveles de gobierno. “Como dijo nuestra alcaldesa, cuando los tres órdenes de gobierno, federal estatal y municipal, trabajan en un solo orden, como aquí, tienen que venir beneficios a nuestra gente, a nuestro pueblo, por eso celebramos la llegada de un mujer a la Presidencia de la República, y desde aquí quiero reconocerle y seguro que a México le va a ir bien con la doctora Claudia Shenibaum”, dijo el Reyes Rodríguez.
