“Singapore with a singaBORE main” UFC Fight Night: Askren vs Maia preview
Joey
October 20th, 2019
When the UFC signed up to do a multi million dollar stretch of shows in Singapore, I have to imagine this wasn't QUITE on the menu. This show isn't awful but compared to what's coming down the pike with the MSG card, the Vegas PPV, a really solid card in South Korea and such, this card is only worth discussing due to its early start time. Still there's good stuff to discuss here! It's a nifty 11 fight card starting early in the morning with some good HW fights on it and an "intriguing" main event. Let's see what happens.
Fights: 11
Debuts: Loma Lookboonmee, Don'tale Mayes
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 4 (Karol Rosa vs Julia Avila CANCELLED/Jarjis Danho vs Greg Hardy CANCELLED/Yan Xionan OUT, Randa Markos IN vs Ashley Yoder/Brad Tavares vs Ian Heinisch CANCELLED)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 6 (Demian Maia, Stevie Ray, Michael Johnson, Beneil Dariush, Sergey Pavlovich, Randa Markos)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC:
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC: 7 (Demian Maia, Muslim Salikhov, Laureano Staropoli, Beneil Dariush, Maurice Green, Ashley Yoder, Sergey Pavlovich)
Main Card Record Since Jan 1st 2017 (in the UFC): 17-19-1
Ben Askren- 1-1 Demian Maia- 3-3 Michael Johnson- 2-3 Stevie Ray- 2-3 Muslim Salikhov- 2-1 Laureano Staropoli- 2-0 Beneil Dariush- 2-2-1 Frank Camacho- 2-3 Cyril Gane- 1-0 Don'Tale Mayes- 0-0
Fights By Weight Class (yearly number here):
Lightweight- 3 (69) Heavyweight- 3 (34) Welterweight-  2 (64) Women’s Strawweight- 2 (28) Featherweight-  1 (53)
Women’s Flyweight-  (31) Middleweight-  (40) Light Heavyweight-  (39) Bantamweight- (53) Flyweight-  (15) Women’s Featherweight- (8) Women’s Bantamweight-  (18)
2019 Number Tracker
Debuting Fighters (37-58-1)- Loma Lookboonmee, Don'tale Mayes
Short Notice Fighters (28-36)- Randa Markos
Second Fight (52-35)- Movsar Evloev, Raphael Pessoa, Ciryl Gane, Rafael Fiziev
Cage Corrosion (Fighters who have not fought within a year of the date of the fight) (22-38-1)-
Undefeated Fighters (38-37-2)- Ciryl Gane, Movsar Evloev
Fighters with at least four fights in the UFC with 0 wins over competition still in the organization (11-8)- Frank Camacho, Stevie Ray
Weight Class Jumpers (Fighters competing outside of the weight class of their last fight even if they’re returning BACK to their “normal weight class”) (29-22)- Michael Johnson
Twelve Precarious Ponderings
1- I've seen some folks who take the Askren vs Maia booking as some sort of punishment for Askren because it's an early morning show overseas BUT let's be 100% fair and point out that Askren spent the better part of the last 4-5 years fighting in Asia and SHOULD have some semblance of name recognition. In this case he probably serves more good as the main eventer on a random Asian show than he does as the 3rd or 4th fight in MSG or what have you. I mean if he doesn't then why did you even sign him?
2- Who is this main event appealing to? I can understand SOME genuine appeal in this fight for the grappling purists out there I suppose but even that feels limited. I just think if you took 100 MMA fans and brought them into a room and said "Would you like five rounds of Askren vs Maia?", the slimmest of slim percentage of them would say "Oh man, love it. Bring me all of that." It's a fine main event pitting name value vs name value and I guess style vs style but the appeal feels so limited. I really hope this isn't what that group in Singapore expected to be paying for when they made this multi-million dollar deal with the UFC for the next five years or so.
3- Even with a win, is Askren officially "done" in terms of flirtations as a #1 contender? Usually a win over Demian Maia takes you right to #1 contender status. In this instance, it feels like Askren is sort of kind of in the Vitor range where anything short of a string of stoppages will keep him firmly from the title picture.
4- Is  Michael Johnson vs Stevie Ray the most random co-main of 2019? I can't imagine it's got a lot of competition for the spot.
5- Laureano Staropoli vs Muslim Salikhov is a really interesting fight for a variety of reasons. For starters, Staropoli has real potential to become yet another solid Argentinian fighter in the UFC's fold. He's 2-0 and coming off a decision win over Thiago Alves in Brazil. He's a balanced striker who seems to excel in those back and forth firefights where he can outlast his opposition. Thats going to be a problem against Muslim Salikhov who is beginning to find his groove in the UFC. Every second this fight stays standing and at a pace befitting of Muslim is a second closer to losing in a most brutal fashion. Can Staropoli wrestle more than we've seen him do so far?
6- If I had a fighter like Frank Camacho, I'm not sure that I'd put him up against a guy who is primarily coming to wrestle with Beneil Dariush. Dariush is going to try to Drew Dobert it except he can't strike as good as Dober so we're setting up for a lot of wall and stall. Thumbs down.
7- If you're not hot on heavyweights, lemme chit chat with you a bit about how some of these HW fights are pretty good:
With the UFC talking about doing a show in France in 2020, Ciryl Gane figures to be an impressive dude to follow. The muay thai stud/Ngannou sparring buddy won his UFC debut without much issue and the French born fighter will be given ample opportunities to show out. Dontale Mayes is the rare THREE time DWCS talent who lost his first fight but won the next two by stoppage. Mayes' upside may be in a role like this as a hard hitting prospect tester. One thing which stood out was how much weight he lost between all three Contenders Series fights.
Sergey Pavlovich vs Maurice Greene is a REALLY interesting fight. Mo Greene was a bit of a gimmick who got the villain edit on TUF but he's fought three times while the winner of the show has pretty much disappeared. Greene hits really hard, attacks from awkward angles, doesn't have good wrestling but has some wacky BJJ off of his back and so far his cardio hasn't been awfl. On the other hand, Sergey Pavlovich has gone from Russian prospect du jour to "maybe he's good?" UFC fighter. Pavlovich's first win was against Junior Albini and Mo Greene's best win as of right now is Junior Albini so here we are. Good evenly matched fight on paper.
Raphael Pessoa vs Jeff Hughes kicks off the show and Huges was considered to be one of the top HW prospects prior to getting into the UFC. To this point he was upset by Maurice Greene (who he had beaten on the regional circuit) and looked to be potentially en route to getting slop stopped by Todd Duffee prior to an eye poke no contest. This is like the bottom of the barrel in terms of opposition and if Hughes loses this one, his career is in deep doo doo.
8- Speaking of Maurice Greene, can we just pretend that he won the TUF season if he wins this fight vs Pavlovich?
9- Enrique Barzola vs Mosvar Evloev is an interesting fight because it pits arguably the most exciting Russian prospect in the UFC under 155 lbs against a really solid featherweight who can do some stuff to challenge Evloev. Barzola's a superb wrestler who has endless pressure and cardio while Evloev has excelled thus far in the UFC as a slower paced grappling machine despite showing more on Russia's regional circuit. We haven't seen Barzola do much counter wrestling and Evloev figures to test that in spades IF he fights like he did in his debut.
10- Randa Markos is still relevant at 115 lbs which feels like a credit to her but also a knock on the speed (or lack thereof) by which this division is advancing.
11- Who has the cardio advantage between Maia and Askreen going into the championship rounds? Gotta be Ben, right?
12- Is this the most irrelevant card of the year?

UFC 237 AfterMMAth (Pulling Triggers)
Some triggers were pulled, some triggers were not. A belt was won, a figher got very close to getting another. Joy and disappointment filled this fun card. and how did I do with my picks? It's all here in the #UFC237 #AfterMMAth
UFC237 was another card that over delivered, for the lack of general enthusiasm among MMA fans. It featured 7 finishes in 12 fights, and for the most part was a fun watch. Alright, let’s jump right to my picks. Then, we’ll chat about this, that and the other.

UFC Champion Rose Namajunas goes into enemy territory attempting to defend her title against Brazil’s Jessica Andrade. This is no doubt Rose Namajunas’s toughest challenge. With her title defense being in Jessica’s Hometown it will be interesting on how she handles the crowd and her opponents aggressiveness.
In addition the Co-Main is topped with Top ten Middleweights Anderson Silva and Jared Cannonier. Anderson Silva has had a bumpy road considering his career as of right now with a unanimous decision loss to current Interm Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 234 we will see how he handles Cannonier a young and hungry fighter trying to prove why he belongs in this division.
(Main Card)
Rose Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade (Title Fight)
Anderson Silva vs. Jared Cannonier (Co Main)
Jose Aldo vs. Alexander Volkanovski
Thiago Alves vs. Laureano Staropoli
Francisco Trinaldo vs. Diego Ferreira

“Some good fights, a title fight, some prelims to like. It’s all good here.” UFC in Uruguay Preview
Joey
August 7th, 2019
International Expansion! After ignoring the majority of South American since the start of its expansion in 2013/2014, the UFC has been dabbling more and more in South America as we approach the roarin' 2020s. The UFC heads to Uruguay for its first ever show, bringing a title fight and a surprisingly not bad card with it! It's a heartbreak and a bummer that some of the fights on this card fell through but what remains isn't half bad. At the top of the bill, Valentina Shevchenko gets a quickie turnaround by most champions standards, rolling back around in August after icing Jessica Eye. It's not the best title fight possible but it is A title fight and that's what counts. Under the flyweight title fight you have a tremendous action fight between Vicente Luque and Mike Perry, a pretty good light heavyweight fight between Volkan Oezdemir and Ilir Latifi, the debut of proven BJJ ace Rodolfo Vieira against solid Polish fighter Oskar Piechota coming off his first career loss and as well as the return of underrated featherweight Enrique Barzola against Bobby Moffet. The prelims are standard UFC overseas affair for the most part, some interesting fighters on some interesting fight plans.
Fights: 13
Debuts: Luiz Garagorri, Rodolfo Vieira, Cyril Gane, Raphael Pessoa, Rodrigo Vargas
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 5 (Ashlee Evans-Smith OUT, Ariane Carnelossi IN vs Talia Santos/Talia Santos vs Ariane Carnelossi CANCELLED/Rachael Ostovich OUT, Polyana Viana IN vs Veronica Macedo/Rafael Fiziev OUT, Rodrigo Vargas IN vs Alex da Silva/Laureano Staropoli OUT, Gilbert Burns IN vs Alexey Kunchenko)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 6 (Ilir Latifi, Volkan Oezdemir, Valentina Shevchenko, Liz Carmouche, Mike Perry, Tecia Torres)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC: 4 (Tecia Torres, Volkan Oezdemir, Humberto Bandenay, Polyana Viana)
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC: 5 (Valentina Shevchenko, Liz Carmouche, Vicente Luque, Gilbert Burns, Alexey Kunchenko)
Main Card Record Since Jan 1st 2017 (in the UFC):  27-15
Valentina Shevchenko- 4-1 Liz Carmouche- 2-1 Mike Perry- 4-3 Vicente Luque- 5-1 Humberto Bandenay- 1-2 Luiz Garagorri- 0-0 Ilir Latifi- 2-1 Volkan Oezdemir- 3-3 Oskar Piechota- 2-1 Rodolfo Vieira- 0-0 Enrique Barzola- 3-1 Bobby Moffett- 1-1
Fights By Weight Class (yearly number here):
Welterweight- 2 (46) Featherweight-  2 (39) Women’s Flyweight- 2 (26) Middleweight- 1 (26) Women’s Strawweight- 1 (20) Light Heavyweight- 1 (31) Heavyweight- 1 (23) Flyweight- 1 (11) Bantamweight- 1 (40) Lightweight- 1 (49)
Women’s Featherweight- (7) Women’s Bantamweight- (13)
2019 Number Tracker
Debuting Fighters (20-45)- Luiz Garagorri, Rodolfo Vieira, Cyril Gane, Raphael Pessoa, Rodrigo Vargas
Short Notice Fighters (21-28)- Rodrigo Vargas, Poliyana Viana, Gilbert Lewis
Second Fight (43-21)- Geraldo de Freitas, Alex da Silva, Rogério Bontorin, Raulian Paiva
Cage Corrosion (Fighters who have not fought within a year of the date of the fight) (17-28)- Oskar Piechota
Undefeated Fighters (25-29)- Alexey Kunchenko, Cyril Gane, Raphael Pessoa, Rodolfo Vieira, Luiz Garagorri, Marina Rodriguez
Fighters with at least four fights in the UFC with 0 wins over competition still in the organization (9-8)-
Weight Class Jumpers (Fighters competing outside of the weight class of their last fight even if they’re returning BACK to their “normal weight class”) (24-17)- Gilbert Burns
Twelve Precarious Ponderings
1-  The biggest risk Valentina Shevchenko is taking has little to do with Liz Carmouche. Now Carmouche is a respectable fighter who is a credible challenger on a bit of a winning streak. She's here to fill up a spot vs Shevchenko but here's where the challenge comes in; going into the Jessica Eye fight, the narrative on Valentina Shevchenko was that she was the most boring champion in the UFC by far. She had officially replaced Amanda Nunes as the face of boring dull WMMA title fights and like how Nunes reversed the trend by finishing Cyborg, Shevchenko blasting out Jessica Eye flipped the script. Suddenly Shevchenko went from being a dominant yet patient dull point fighter to having the best knockout of 2019. Rather than rest on that, the UFC called and Shevchenko immediately hopped right back into camp for another fight. MMA fans are fickle beasts who often don't remember the favor booking as Mighty Mouse learned. There's no virtue to "saving the show" if you're a favorite or a champion. Valentina Shevchenko's stock has never been higher and this is a serious risk. Another five round snoozer title fight and we're not talking about how Shevchenko saved a show, defended her title, remained active and kept active. We'll be talking about the aberration of the Jessica Eye KO and how Shevchenko is the most boring champion in the UFC.
2- How quickly will Valentina turn around after this fight? Think we see her in MSG or in Australia?
3- Is Mike Perry technically better than a top 10 fight for Vicente Luque? With so many violent finishes from Vicente Luque, he seemed destined for a big step up namewise but what wound up happening is that most of the guys he asked for (Robbie Lawler, Ponz) opted not to fight him. The rankings are pretty much tied up with everybody except the injured folks like Woodley, Ponz and Thompson tied up; Mike Perry might be a better fight for Luque than the likes of Demian Maia or Neil Magny or Elizeu Zaleski. Mike Perry is probably more famous than any top 10 fighter and he's the sort of stylistic matchup that Luque will favor.
4- Could Mike Perry crack the top 15 if he finishes Luque?
5- I am irrationally excited about Ilir Latifi vs Volkan Oezdemir. No idea why.
6- Anyways what do we make of Volkan Oezdemir now? His run to the UFC light heavyweight title shot is not particularly impressive in hindsight; a sloppy short notice split decision over OSP in a fight he took on 11 days notice, a quickie KO over Misha Cirkunov followed up by a similarly quick KO over Jimi Manuwa. All of that paved the way for Volkan to fight Daniel Cormier in a fight he lost in the second round which was then followed up by a bad loss to Anthony Smith in a grueling fight and a decision loss to Dominick Reyes that I feel like he might've had an argument for winning BUT the general rule of thumb that the fighter who finishes strongest gets the decision played out. Oezdemir is a strong starter, a powerful guy who is hard to take down or control in the clinch but limited as a striker and has serious cardio issues that prevent him from maintaining his cardio over the long stretches. It looks like he DID make some subtle stylistic differences to preserve himself but it wasn't enough vs Dom Reyes.
7- So is Rodolfo Vieira an intriguing gimmick or are we about to get another intriguing mix into the middleweight ranks?
8- Gilbert Burns moving up to 170 lbs is going to be the best thing for him but Kunchenko is a tough opponent to deal with.
9- Bobby Moffett got his big UFC debut when he followed up winning up the DWCS by submitting Chas Skelly rather impressively. He followed that up by getting pretty much run over by the cardio machine that is Bryce Mitchell where his lack of high level athleticism and grinder-y style was exposed. On the other side of the cage you'll have Enrique Barzola who is coming off his first UFC loss (That Bochniak fight doesn't exist) against Kevin Aguilar. Barzola's inability to augment his tremendous pressure wrestling with some fundamental handiwork continues to be a bit of a handicap but Barzola's pressure and takedowns can carry him far. Both guys REALLY need this one.
10- Cyril Gane is basically the big buzz guy for these prelims and for good reason. He's a HW the UFC has been keeping an eye on for a while and then finally Gane got the contract after successfully defending his TKO title in Canada. He's a training partner for Francis Ngannou who took a UFC deal over a Glory contract. Apparently in the upwards of six different fighters on the roster turned down this fight and so Raphael Pessoa got the opportunity to fight Gane.
11- This is sort of the LAST chance for Tecia Torres, right? Three losses in a row, none overly competitive and the talent at 115 lbs is only getting better. Marina Rodriguez feels like the sort of person she should beat and has beaten time and time again.
12- Is this basically just a Brazilian card NOT in Brazil?

UFC 237 odds and betting trends for Saturday night card
Tumblr media
Rose Namajunas will try to defend her title against Jessica Andrade in the main event of UFC 237 on Saturday as a small underdog on the betting lines.
Rose Namajunas has won each of her last three fights, most recently defeating Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship at UFC 217 and then successfully defending against Jedrzejczyk at UFC 223. Namajunas moves on to a new opponent this Saturday when she defends her championship at UFC 237 against Jessica Andrade.
The champion is a +110 underdog on the UFC odds to retain her title with a win at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Namajunas is no stranger to the underdog role as she closed as a +330 underdog in her first win against Jedrzejczyk and a +120 one in her second. She will be facing a hostile crowd in Jessica Andrade’s home country of Brazil.
youtube
Andrade (-140 to win) has more than just her home crowd going for her. The 27-year-old seems to get better with every fight and has entered her prime with authority going 6-1 over her last seven fights with impressive wins over Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz. These are clearly the two best women’s strawweights in the game at the moment, and this bout will show us who belongs on top.
The main card at UFC 237 is loaded with highly competitive fights. The first match on the main card of Irene Aldana (-360) vs. Bethe Correia (+270) is the only one with a favorite going off at higher than -145 at sports betting sites. The lead up to the main event features Thiago Alves (-115) vs. Laureano Staropoli (-115), Jose Aldo (-145) vs. Alex Volkanovski (+115) and Jared Cannonier (-145) vs. Anderson Silva (+115).
Anderson Silva is comfortably in the conversation for the greatest UFC fighter of all time. He started his career in the UFC with 16 straight wins and held the UFC Middleweight Championship for a staggering 2,457 days. But since 2013, Silva is 1-5 in six official fights, most recently losing to Israel Adesanya at UFC 234. Now 44 years old, Silva hopes to give the fans in his home country one more win.
Alex Volkanovski is 19-1 as a professional with 16 straight wins and a 6-0 record in his first six UFC fights. He gets his toughest test to date against the 28-4 Brazilian Jose Aldo, who has won each of his last two fights by knockout.
UFC 237 Betting Lines
Jessica Andrade (-140) vs. Rose Namajunas (+110)
Jared Cannonier (-145) vs. Anderson Silva (+115)
Jose Aldo (-145) vs. Alex Volkanovski (+115)
Thiago Alves (-115) vs. Laureano Staropoli (-115)
Irene Aldana (-360) vs. Bethe Correia (+270)
