Ten Of Swords: Level One
The world of Swords of Power and Conquest was one Virgil dove head first into, giving his soul and life to the game. He would play whenever he could, and had even decided he wanted to go into game design. At times he had even dreamt of how wonderful it would be to be inside that world for even a moment- until that world became his reality.
The familiar world he had come to love was now a foreign prison, one with no way out.
A Log Horizon AU. If you don’t know what that is, this is a Show Better Than SAO AU. If you still don’t know, the sides get trapped in a video game.

Level One: A Place That Doesn’t Really Exist
He had gotten the game on a whim out of boredom. It was something he heard of a lot from kids at school, but with a laptop as old as his he had never considered getting it himself. And then he got a new laptop for his birthday. And a few days later, knowing he’d be bored during his family’s Christmas party, he downloaded it. It had taken forever honestly, and he kept going back and forth to his room to see when it would finally be ready for him to play. When it finally was prepared he had sat on his bed surrounded by younger cousins who had made their way into his room (past the door he had been 80% sure he had locked) and made his character. They had opinions on his character’s look, and even the name. But finally he thought he had found a way to both trick and satisfy the kids, and typed the name of the toddler in. He had fully expected the system to reject the name and then the kids couldn’t complain when he changed it to something he actually wanted. He hadn’t expected the game however to fucking accept “Anthony” as his screen name.
It had been a stupid introduction gaming, but back then Virgil didn’t realize how much of an impact Swords of Power and Conquest would have on his life. At one point he had thought the name was cheesy, but soon enough just like the rest of the world of Lirya, Virgil fell in love with it.
The intricacies of the many skills available, the complex fighting system which interpreted those skills, and the way it seemed to thrive without any form of class systems, were all mesmerizing to Virgil in ways he couldn’t describe. He had thrown himself into the game playing day and night (much to his parents’ dismay), and fell more in love with it each moment.
He had tried other games, at the urging of friends who claimed Swords was too pointless with all the holes in its main quest. Those games had been fun, and Virgil had even tried a bunch of different genres. But there was something about Swords which always pulled him back. Maybe because it was his introduction, or perhaps because the constantly updating side quests and his in game friends were too great to give up. So much so that years later Virgil found himself not only playing, but wanting to go into game design. He wanted to create- to work on something just as good, if not better than Swords. To give someone else the feeling he had when he first started the game.
He was a true geek wasn’t he?
“I could’ve told you that,” Simon commented.
Virgil rolled his eyes as he typed out his reply, you can’t tell but I’m rolling my eyes
He heard as the guy gave a slight laugh, “You know the point of this feature is to talk right?”
My roommate’s napping, he was feeling sick
“Rude of him... I just got a message from Tact. Apparently he wants to meet and talk.”
What about?
“Doesn’t say. Just says he has some info worth paying for.”
Go handle it. I’ll watch things here
“Sounds good, don't get more handsome while I’m away.”
Virgil rolled his eyes but didn’t bother to reply as Sam teleported out. He gave a stretch as he looked about his screen and the empty shop. On the other side of that virtual wall would be customers hanging out and lounging around, he supposed he could switch outfits and join those working, but he wouldn’t gain much from that. Maybe it was time to sign off for the night, he could watch some of the Twins’ videos. The latest guild had apparently done a large raid against one of the sphinxes of legend, that would be a cool video to watch. With that thought in mind he logged off and when the window was closed he noticed his calendar open.
His calendar with words written in red for the following day.
CALC TEST
A curse slipped from Virgil’s mouth as he glanced at his clock. 5:34. If he skipped dinner and studied straight until midnight maybe- just maybe something would stick. Hopefully.
~~~~
Virgil was on the brink of committing murder.
Not only was he stressed about his exam in the morning, but his roommate’s, Jonas’, NyQuil fueled snoring had been loud enough on its own. But on top of that there was the sound of their neighbors. Virgil had never been a fan of those living in the room to his left. This was usually on account of one them seeming to have an “overnight guest” over too often subjecting Virgil to sounds he wished to erase from memory. But tonight that wasn’t the case (at least not yet), tonight was a party.
A loud party which had gone on far too long.
The party had begun probably around nine or ten. And since it had only persisted and grew in volume. At first Virgil had knocked on his wall annoyed, but when that had yielded nothing he had gone over right before midnight to complain about the noise. The one who had opened the door had been taller than him, and if Virgil wasn’t so annoyed and tired he probably would’ve found himself spending more time staring at that gorgeous face as opposed to bitching about the noise. The guy had nodded once and had promised to quiet down.
But that had been two hours ago.
And it seemed Virgil’s second trip to yell at his neighbors to shut the fuck up a few minutes prior had done just as much good. So there was only one course of action left.
“You told the fucking RA?”
Virgil looked up from where he had been staring at his Calc notes in preparation for the test about to begin to the face (of who else but) his neighbor. “I asked you to quiet down twice,” Virgil replied looking back down to the equations in front of him.
“But tattling? What are you? Five?”
Virgil took a deep breath as he looked back up to that face. “It was two am.”
“I don’t care. No one else on the floor seemed to care.”
“That’s not my fault.”
“Alright everyone!” The professor cut in. “It's that time!”
As if calculus exam’s weren’t bad enough on their own, his neighbor’s eyes were glaring holes into the back of his head the entire time. He definitely failed that test. And the pop quiz in CS. And then he had left his Spanish homework in his room (and turns out the asshole neighbor is in that class too). Oh and of course he couldn’t forget he still had an essay due.
Today was just shit in its purest form.
And there was only one shovel Virgil knew how to use.
He couldn’t stop the sigh of relief which escaped his lips as he sunk into his desk chair.
“I take it you had an amazing day?”
Virgil just gave his roommate the finger as he pulled his laptop from his backpack. After glancing at the clock he could play for about an hour before needing to switch to writing his essay in order to be done before it’s due at 11:59. “Hey will you yell at me to stop in an hour?”
“Set a timer,” Jonas advised. “I’m not being yelled at again for forgetting.”
Virgil rolled his eyes before doing as he was told. With his timer set he pulled his headphones on and logged in. Logging in was accompanied by a message from Ralph.
The Silver Green Sharks and the Zora Regime are warring today on the Sheriyan Ruins in two hours. I’ll send a follow up with the exact coordinates soon as I know.
Virgil glanced at the time the message was sent with a smile as his inbox refreshed with a new message. Ralph seemed to have perfect timing as always.
He found a spot toward the outer ring of the ruins where he’d been hidden in the shadows of the collapsed building. And not a moment too soon, because it was then others began to arrive at site. But after nearly forty minutes, Virgil was finding neither guild seemed to be timely. They just seemed to have taken sides, but neither had bothered to attack. Virgil’s fingers were itching for something- anything to do. They needed to start fighting soon, before Virgil spent too long playing and his essay (and grade) suffered as a consequence. He sat there, spinning his phone’s ring stand in his hands and biting his tongue, and then a shout sounded over his headphones. He hadn’t been paying attention enough to know what it said, but the moment the voice ceased the two armies charged.
The chaos was instant, and Virgil had to stop himself from smiling at the sight- he had nothing to smile about just yet. His eyes scanned the details of everything in his character’s field of view- which wasn't much in this spot. But even if he moved further out he wouldn’t have enough information... He’d need to get to higher ground to see anything, but he’d need to risk being seen. But then again the risk was a portion of the fun. Virgil’s eyes flickered to his skills list, his mind already running through the combinations he knew. This was the true fun of Swords. To a new player a single skill was simply that. To a veteran its a building block, a string meant to be interwoven in an unseen pattern with others to create even better ones. The combinations were near limitless overall, and every pattern held potential. But even with so many patterns only five patterns could be saved to be used a single click before the level cap. Others would take long casting time purely based on the abilities of the player.
The skills, the skills, the skills.
Virgil could and had gone on and on explaining to friends the combinations he had found and written down, and he could go on about theories he had for new ones. But this mission wasn’t the time. It wasn’t the time to think about improving his skills to get what he needed, right now he had a single saved skill, which would be useful in this situation, Silent Presence. A sneaking and cloaking skill which would keep him hidden for five seconds before a cool down too long to let him use it again if needed. Virgil took a deep breath and poised his fingers on his mouse and keyboard. He’d run, look for higher ground while looking out for any possible grabs, use his skill and then steal the best thing he could.
He took a deep breath and then he was going. He ran out amongst the masses fighting, dodging them as he went. If anyone noticed him, they didn't say anything or try to fight him, most likely assuming he was a mercenary. He moved quickly spotting a higher bit of a crumbling wall, a few feet higher than the rest and everyone’s heads- perfect. He gave another deep breath, and then charged the wall. He jumped up to another crumbling piece and then double jumped up to the top ensuring he used Silent Presence as he did.
Virgil bit his tongue as his eyes scanned the screen and zeroed in on where a few of the The Silver Green Sharks and a Zona regime commander surrounded, and she was failing to fight back. But regardless of who would win, there would be some nice drops. The only problem was that he wasn’t sure how much longer that fight would last, but with Silent Presence ending he had no choice but to move and hope for the best. He hopped down and started running going wide to see the fight going on his left. But as he went Virgil’s gaze couldn't help but slip to his timer and he bit his tongue noticing how much was left, three minutes. Maybe he’d go a few minutes past, he’d just need to get a good drop to make it worth it.
The Silver Green Sharks had forced the Zora Regime’s commander back away from her troops. There were three of them, surrounding her, forcing her to back up as they attacked him from long and short range with all the skills in their arsenal. From his angle none of them looked particularly impressive by Virgil’s standards, but it didn't matter. She was failing to fight back despite the impressive looking sword in her hand (a high level one no doubt given the Zora Regime’s status), so her HP wouldn’t last much longer. And that meant Virgil needed to move faster. He glanced at his remaining skills debating if he should save his Speed Sprint for before or after this grab. But looking at how badly this commander was doing he didn’t have much of a choice. He charged forward watching as the commander fell and the Silver Green Sharks began to jump for joy. Virgil didn't waste time jumping with them. He used the last of his speed burst to run up to the dead character.
The sound of his timer pierced his psyche and Virgil’s fingers slipped causing his character to stumble, but he tried to regain his momentum as he reached the fallen commander. The moment his hand was on the sword he wasn’t even sure if anyone was following him but he didn’t bother to check as he continued to run as fast as he could. He gritted his teeth as he ignored the sound of the timer ringing loudly in his ears, he couldn't think about that right now. Right now he needed to focus on the game. So in case of pursuers, he switched the sword strapped to his back, for the higher level one he had stolen. He had never been good enough with long distance weapons to rely on them. He could only rely on how fast he could run. He ran for the outer edge of the Ruins where he could dive into the forest. His fingers were flying across the keyboard queuing up a teleport crystal. For a moment he thought he was free-
“Turn the thing off!” Jonas shouted at him.
Virgil grimaced but didn’t bother responding as enemies began to come his way. He gave a swallow, eyes scanning the map for an escape as he tried to ignore Jonas’ bitching in the background. Damn he should’ve saved the fucking sprint.
The cliff. It was a gamble but if he managed to get the edge, maybe they would slow down enough rather than push him off the edge. He just needed enough time to plug in the coordinates to the crystal. That would only take what? Four seconds? Could he buy himself that much-
“Virgil!”
“Shut up.” He returned, or was he directing it at the shouting voices in his headphones. Quite frankly he didn’t care. They were gaining on him, but as he reached the edge his character skidded to a stop. The enemies behind him didn't close in but they were too close for comfort. If they shot an arrow he was dead. Virgil gave a swallow as he finished typing in the last of the coordinates a risky plan before him.
“Virgil!”
He jumped from the cliff and hit teleport at once, and as he began to teleport he felt an overwhelming amount of relief. He couldn't help but smile as Jonas snatched his phone away, nor did he care about the angered shouts in his headphones.
And then came the deafening static.
It was sudden- it was loud- it was piercing and Virgil let out an involuntary scream of pain. He reached to rip off his headphones only to feel his body crash to the ground as his vision flickered. Until he was left completely alone in the darkness.
A groan escaped Virgil’s lips as he pushed himself to his knees. He rubbed at his closed eyes wondering how the hell he had managed to take such a hard fall from his chair before he opened them.
He was greeted with the sight of grass. Grass and trees.
Virgil gave a swallow as he pulled himself to his feet trying to annoy the way his heart had leaped into his throat which was already constricting itself. He tried to force down his panic and the rising bile- he tried to breathe - but his gaze was focused on the sign.
On the sign he had once helped put in this exact spot. But that didn’t make sense, that spot- this spot- that sign- was at the fork leading to the tavern- to a place that doesn’t really exist...
At least, not outside of the game.
Chapter 4
Chapter 5
Chapter 6
An attempt on his latest target doesn't go as well as Eraser had hoped.
And Hizashi gets into trouble that he couldn't have ever expected.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chapter 6
Hizashi saw a pattern the more he looked into the QAP. All the backers...where the target of those arson attacks.
So it was pretty clear that yeah, Eraser was most definitely the one behind them. He needed to thank Gran Torino again for giving him these. Sure a lot of the information was blacked out but it was something other than the 404 Error pages he swears he sees whenever he closes his eyes.
He was able to get a bit more information on what tests went on...the ages of those who participated. Eraser and him were about the same age! He was just, a few months older than him.
He jumped when his phone suddenly buzzed. Reaching into his pocket he pulled it out and looked at who it eyes. Eyes widening.
Tensei.
What was--he was already opening the text.
>>Sorry but not finding a list of names of who were participating during our exams.
He sighed. He figured as much. There was always so many student who would take part, it was easier to just assign a number and record their--
His stomach dropped a bit.
List of quirks? And...I wasn’t expecting a response man! Good to hear from ya!<
>> Thanks. And thanks for visiting me. And yeah I have that!
Is there...an eraser Quirk?<
>>Erase? Ah…
>>Yeah there is one! Looks like he didn’t score high enough to get in the hero course.
Hizashi felt his breath catch in his throat. So..h-he DID try to get in at U.A. He WAS in the lot of student hopefuls that he was in!
Right? T-that was enough to make that connection...maybe? Or was he getting ahead of himself?
>>Also for that second bit...you talking about your crush?
My what now?<
>>Your crush! I swear, you were head over heels for that guy you helped.
All I did was look for him during like the first week of school dude.<
>>No dude...you didn’t.
>>You did it EVERYDAY until graduation.
He stared at the screen. What was Tensei going on about? Heaving a sigh he pressed the dial button.
"Yo Hizashi," Tensei’s voice greeted.
"Yeah hi...what are ya on? I didn’t look everyday!"
"Uh...yeah you did. You would go to the GenEd department and look. The teachers actually got annoyed and threatened to kick you out if you didn’t stop."
Hizashi tried to remember. Usually his memory was pretty good. So why couldn’t he…
"It was a bit annoying, but as your friend I just let ya be. I mean...you seemed adamant. And to be honest...man you almost made me cry during our last year when you finally gave up! You sounded so heartbroken!"
Heartbroken? That….could explain that then. H-he usually didn’t like remembering things that depressed him. He really couldn’t recall things about his birth parents even though he lived with them until he was about seven or eight.
Or much detail of his first date, other than he and the girl agreed that it really wasn’t going to work.
"Tensei...what do you remember?"
"Huh? Hizashi? What’s going on? You know I hate being kept in the dar--"
"I think...I found him."
--
"What do you mean you’re not going to the training camp!?" Midnight nearly screeched. "The kids are already on their way there! You can’t just--"
Hizashi sighed. "It’s just what it sounds like...I’m, working on something."
"Uh-huh," she didn’t sound convinced.
"I think I got a lead on the arson attacks Nemuri," He didn’t have time to waste, and it wasn’t technically a lie. After all he was PRETTY sure he really did know who was behind them.
"So...you really were looking into them," she sounded shock.
"You thought I wasn’t?" He blinked.
"I...well, I didn’t think that. But…" she trailed off.
"Somebody else was thinking that?" What the hell? When was this a thing?
"It was Snipe. He said you were acting, different," Nemuri explained.
What the absolute hell Snipe? Yeah alright he knows that they didn’t always see eye-to-eye but he was pretty sure they were on good terms with one another. Looks like that old saying about assuming was right. "And you agreed with him?"
"Well ah...Hizashi you have been...there’s something different about you. I just can’t put my finger on it."
He pinched his nose bridge. Sighing some, he didn’t have time for this. "Listen I’m just wrapped up in this alright? I...there’s some connection that I’m not liking. So I’m just...I don’t wanna believe it."
"Hizashi...I...I’m sorry," she frowned. "If you need to talk--"
"I’ll be fine just--this is why I’m not going alright?" He looked over to her.
She nodded. "I’ll be sure to let them know."
--
He had to do this as fast as possible. Too many people were around. Why were there so many people? What was--
Wait what was that?
Muttering?
Lots of muttering. Was somebody following him? Did somebody catch him. He set down the canister and listened closely. Where was it coming from?
With practice ease he made his way to it. Doing his best to move as soundlessly as possible.
How to go about this?
Civilians, he could try and lead them away.
Villains? He could take them out easily enough.
Heroes? That could be an annoyance but he was certain he would be able to handle the--
He stared at the group of students; who inturned just stared back at him. He wasn't sure if he was more shocked to see kids this youn in this area of the city…
Or at what they were wearing.
--
Right how does he get this place freaking opened?
Hizashi was studying the wall. He had to call into the station stating there was going to be a good chance he wouldn’t make it in. Sure it wasn’t Friday but he liked trying to pop in a few days out of the week just to lend a hand. It felt like the responsible thing to do after all.
This "case" might take more of his time than he hoped it would.
There was a small click. AHA! There it was!
He tried to pull the door open--holy shit this was heavy! Eraser seriously made this look so much easier to open!
He stepped in and looked around. Right which way again? Left? Yeah he was pretty sure left. He pulled the heavy door closed behind him. This place still made him feel...it still made chills run up his spine. His footsteps echoed almost too clearly in this place. Green eyes darting from side to side as he took in how the doors looked once again. Reading the numbers adorning them. He stopped as one in particular caught his attention.
Number 155.
The number assigned to the eraser Quirk.
Did that mean that was...Eraser’s? He swallowed slightly. Well he needed to talk to him. It’s why he came here. And if there was a place to start looking for him, this was a good place.
Holy fuck, were all the doors in this place this heavy? For real!? He got it opened enough for him to squeeze through. Jeeze, they really wanted to make sure there was going to be no way for them to get out.
Ah, he wasn’t in here…
In fact it looked like nobody was in here for years by the layer of dust that covere--
SLAM!
Holy shit! The was loud! It almost gave him a hear--
Click.
"No...oh nononono!" Hizashi whipped around to see the door was now closed behind him. Rushing over he tried to push it op. His heart was pounding. Shit shit shit! He could start feeling himself breathing hard and fast.
Not good! Not goo--
"E-ERASER!?" He called out frantically. Please please please be here! Please be here!
There was no answer, and he felt his stomach drop. He started again trying to get the door to budge. Stupid stupid stupid! This was such a stupid idea!
" ERASER! "
Please...please answer me!
--
"There’s no reaction even though we’ve gotten this close," the girl said.
"The lights aren’t even on. It doesn’t look like anyone’s there," the redhead added.
"Why are you five doing this again?" Eraser asked as he glanced over at the building. There was something...off about it. Not the outside of it, but the feel from it. A feeling he knew all too well.
There was something definite hiding in the--
"Hey, what’re ya doin’ hostess?"
The girl stepped back as she let out an uneasy sound.
"Come drink with us!" Great drunken idiots. He hated dealing with them.
"Stop it idiot," the other laughed as he slapped the back of the head of the other.
"Th-there’s a lady with a huge ra--" the lewd remark was cut off as he was knocked out. Eraser suddenly behind him.
"Hey wha' jus--"
Four of the kids just watched in awe as he knocked them out without any delay. This was getting to be more tiresome than he thought it…
"Let’s get away from here now," Todoroki suggested.

Notes:
Reasoning behind the number 155 for Eraserhead? It's a homage to his appearances; Season 1, Episode 5, Chapter 5.

How to Avoid Financial Failure to Launch
Note from Mr. SR: Recently, one of the top media complaints about people in their 20s and 30s is that they’re not moving out on their own. A USA Today article shares that “for the first time in 130 years, young adults ages 18 to 34 are more likely to be living at home with their parents than with a romantic partner.”
I don’t have kids yet, but I’m excited to share this post written by my friend Brian from Debt Discipline.
Whether you are the parent of a young adult or you yourself are are trying to launch, this article will share some practical tips — for both your finances and your relationship with your parents.
Have you heard the phrase “failure to launch” before? I’m sure you have, there was a $100 million-grossing movie, starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker of the same name. If you are a parent, you might be thinking about how it relates to your kids.
No parent wants their child to experience the failure to launch and end up living in their basement until they’re thirty-five. Failure to Launch is a common way to describe a young adult who is struggling with the transition to adulthood. It’s often defined as an inability to leave home and support oneself.
One of the common reasons a young adult fails to launch is because of money. Lack of it or not knowing how to manage it. Many parents want to soften their child’s entry into the real world, but at what cost? Do they work more, delay retirement, skimp on savings?
Parents want the best for their kids, but not by sacrificing their own futures. The phenomenon of failure to launch is so rampant that several treatment programs have been developed to help address it. I’m not sure if a costly program is needed unless you are genuinely dealing with a medical condition.
Let’s breakdown some of the ways you can prevent the failure to launch syndrome from occurring.
Techniques to overcome failure to launch
Finding passion
It mind sound a bit cliche, but young adults need passion in their lives. In fact, we all need a bit of it. Passion combats failure to launch by letting us be participants rather than observers. Passion comes in all shapes and sizes and doesn’t necessarily need to be your job. You may find passion in helping others, cooking, music, art, a particular career field, sports, chocolate, video games, movies, etc. The list is almost endless.
The key is to harness that passion and let it help drive and motivate you. As parents, we can be supportive of a child’s passion. We need to reinforce the idea that life is not about “likes” on a social media platform, but about real, meaningful connections to people and activities.
If all else fails in discovering your passion, you might want to try the opposite, by listing all the things you hate doing. By systemically eliminating these things from your life, you will be left with only the things you enjoy doing. This is an excellent exercise for someone struggling to find their passion.
Financial literacy
Let’s face it. We use money in all of our lives. But only 1/3 of states require their students to graduate having taken a personal finance class. Formal education is just one way we increase our knowledge. A lot is learned from family and friends too.
Failure to launch into what has recently been coined “emerging adulthood” has a lot to do with money. Children learn by example, so it essential to be a good one and involve them in money discussions. Money shouldn’t be a taboo topic. If you’re bad with money, how do you think your children are going to handle it?
Sure there are exceptions, but most will fail too. Financial literacy needs to start with you. There are plenty of books, blogs, and podcast to help you increase your financial IQ if you need help. In turn, you can better prepare your kids. Involve them in age-appropriate topics. If you ever want a captive audience, talk to them about smartphones. They are always interested in getting the latest and greatest model.
Teach them about costs
You can explain the cost of a new device, your choices for paying for it (in full or payment plan), the reoccurring charges each month, and how many hours someone would have to work to covers these costs you’ve just successfully navigated a money conversation with your child.
Taking a money discussion further, does your child know how much you make? What your rent or mortgage costs? Discussing these real-life examples helps them better understand money and what things cost and how to pay for them.
As a teenager, with a part-time job and driving a car are two great opportunities for preparing them for their financial futures, and avoiding failure to launch. Review their paycheck and taxes. Give them the challenge to save, spend, and give a portion of their income. A car is another teachable money moment. The overall cost to own, maintain, insurance, and gas it to keep it running.
These examples are all thing adults handle regularly, but as pre-adults, we probably don’t care about them at all. That was one of the benefits of being a kid, no adult responsibilities. But if these details are always hidden and never discussed, how would we ever be able to handle them when presented?
Avoiding debt
Debt is a four letter word for a reason. Starting your financial life with debt is an apparent reason why emerging adults fail to launch into financial adulthood. Debt causes stress. Debt causes fear. It causes fights. Being in debt limits your options.
Would any of us want to have these restrictions in our lives? Now consider your young adult trying to balance these with a new job and social life it could be overwhelming. It’s essential to stay within your means while supporting your young adult. You do not want wat to sacrifice your financial future or lifestyle by taking on debt for someone else, even your children.
One of the biggest drivers of debt for young adults is student loans. As of 2018, 69% of college students took out student loans, and they graduated with an average debt of $29,800. Ouch! That’s a significant number looming over anyone head.
A college degree doesn’t have to be a debt death sentence. A degree can be obtained with little or no debt if you get creative.
A Side Note: Some of you reading this may already be deep into debt. There are resources available to help. You must be careful of debt consolidation services and the like. You need to know what you’re getting into; and that it will benefit you, not the company allegedly trying to help.
College without debt
Here are five ways to get through school without student loans (or minimal debt):
1. Make the most out of high school
High school offers several ways to get a head start on your college degree. Advanced Placement (AP) are college-level classes you can take in high school and earn future college credit for completing. Most colleges will accept these classes and credits if you score a three or above on AP final exam. This is an excellent way to earn college credit in high school at the cost of an AP exam.
High Schools often offer college-level classes through a partnership with a community college or a local University. These classes allow high school students to earn college credits at a reduced rate. CLEP (the College-Level Examination Program) is another way for students to earn college credits inexpensively. CLEP offers 33 exams that cover intro-level college course material. With a passing score on one CLEP exam, you could earn three or more college credits.
2. Understand the ROI of your degree
What’s the income and job opportunity in your field when you graduate. Don’t borrow $160K for a degree that has the income earning power of $40k per year. You don’t have to kill your dream, and can still follow your passion but find colleges that are cheap to attend.
3. Stay local
Community college is an affordable option and a springboard to larger universities. Attending a community college for the first two years of college life save a ton of money. Many community colleges act as feeder schools for four-year universities.
4. Work
You are going to need to work during college to avoid debt later. A part-time job during the semester help keep sending money in your pocket. A full-time summer job allows you to save for expenses like books and materials. Check with your employer to see if they offer student loan assistance too, many do.
5. Become a resident assistant (RA)
Becoming an RA has its benefits when living on campus. Many colleges offer free room and board if you become an RA. Your responsibilities as an RA will vary, but often an RA helps enforce the rules and policies of residence life, housing and dining services, and the university. Taking on these responsibilities can save you thousands of dollars a semester.
Now student loan debt is only one form of debt someone may encounter. Car loans and credit cards are typical debts too. The idea is the same with those debts. You want to minimize and avoid altogether if possible. Just follow the general rule of living within your means and using cash.
Tough love
If all of your parenting and coaching fails to help your young adult launch, more drastic measures may be needed to push them toward independence. Tough love is often the category this type of parenting falls into. Tough love’s end game is ultimately the person’s welfare. If a child is unable to launch, you may need to enforce stricter boundaries. If they fail to take responsibility for their actions, a clear consequence must occur.
It’s painful to watch someone you care for fail and have to face the consequences, but sometimes it the jolt of reality they need. Enforcing a curfew, deadlines, schedule, etc. may be the structure they need to be successful. You do not want to continue to enable someone who is facing a failure to launch.
Pitching in
Although we want our children to move out, live on their own, and be successful, there could be some benefit for their extended stay at home. Set clear expectations, like pitching in with house chores, including cleaning and cooking. This work helps build some skills they will need on their own.
Consider charging them rent. It’s another one of those items they will need to handle on their own someday. It’s money that you can choose to save for them, so they have a cushion when they finally launch. It could be about spending some extra quality time with your child. Having them living at home gives you the undivided opportunity of their time. Once they are out of the house, they may not always be available. This time might help you develop a deeper relationship.
Have an exit strategy
In any of these steps of overcoming a failure to launch, you need to have clear communication with your child. They need to understand how long or how much support you are will to give. Setting these clear expectations helps them plan for their exit. It doesn’t mean that once they move on that emotional or moral support will stop. You might stay on as their financial accountability partner to help guide them with their money. You may offer resources like books or articles they could read to increase their knowledge on a particular topic.
The key is to have them understand that even though your monetary support has ended, you are always available for a talk or questions. This might be the safety net they need to launch successfully. As parents, we should fulfill our parental responsibility. We need to teach our kids to function independently and raise a person who contributes to society. It doesn’t mean we need to support them financially forever.
Final Word
We all want to live a balanced life. As a parent, we often experience peaks and valleys in our own life. Many factors can contribute to what can feel like a roller coaster ride: things like our work, health, loss, and stress are just a few. As our children grow and experience these things for themselves, we need to help guide them, and let our own experiences act as an example. They will experience speed bumps along the way, and it’s our job to help smooth them out, but eventually, they need to navigate on their own.

8 Ways Young Adults Can Avoid “Failure to Launch”
How to Avoid “Failure to Launch” into Financial Adulthood
[Editor’s Note: Today’s article is a guest post from Brian over at Debt Discipline]
Have you heard the phrase “Failure to Launch” before? There was a $100 million-grossing movie, starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker of the same name. If you’re a parent, you might be thinking about how it relates to your kids.

Failure to Launch is a common way to describe a young adult who is struggling with the transition to adulthood. It’s often defined as an inability to leave home and support oneself.

Now consider your young adult trying to balance these with a new job and social life. It could be overwhelming. It’s essential to stay within your means while supporting your young adult.
You don’t want wait to sacrifice your financial future or lifestyle by taking on debt for someone else, even your children.
One of the biggest drivers of debt for young adults is student loans. As of 2018, 69% of college students took out student loans, and they graduated with an average debt of $29,800. Ouch! That’s a significant number looming over anyone’s head.
A college degree doesn’t have to be a debt death sentence. A degree can be obtained with little or no debt if you get creative.
A Side Note: Some of you reading this may already be deep into debt. There are resources available to help. You must be careful of debt consolidation services. You need to know what you’re getting into; and that it will benefit you, not the company allegedly trying to help.
5) College without debt
Here are five ways to get through school without student loans (or minimal debt):
a. Make the most out of High School
High school offers several ways to get a headstart on your college degree.
It offers 33 exams that cover intro-level college course material. With a passing score on one CLEP exam, you could earn three or more college credits.
b. Understand the ROI of your degree
What’s the income and job opportunity in your field when you graduate. Don’t borrow $160K for a degree that has the income earning power of $40k per year. You don’t have to kill your dream, and can still follow your passion but find colleges that are cheap to attend.
c. Stay local
Community College is an affordable option and a springboard to larger Universities. Attending a community college for the first two years of college life can save a ton of money. Many community colleges act as feeder schools for four-year universities.
d. Work
You’re going to need to work during college to avoid debt later. Trust me, it won’t kill you! A part-time job during the semester helps to keep spending money in your pocket. A full-time summer job allows you to save for expenses like books and materials. Check with your employer to see if they offer student loan assistance too.
Student loan debt is only one form of debt someone may encounter. Car loans and credit cards are also common debts associated with college students. The idea is the same with those debts. You want to minimize and avoid altogether if possible. Just follow the general rule of living within your means and using cash.
6) Tough Love
If all of your parenting and coaching fails to help your young adult launch, more drastic measures may be needed to push them toward independence. Tough love is often the category this type of parenting falls into. Tough love’s end game is ultimately the person’s welfare. If a child is unable to launch, you may need to enforce stricter boundaries. If they fail to take responsibility for their actions, a clear consequence must occur.
It’s painful to watch someone you care for fail and have to face the consequences, but sometimes it’s the jolt of reality they need. Enforcing a curfew, deadlines, schedule, etc. may be the structure they need to be successful. You do not want to continue to enable someone who is facing a failure to launch.
7) Pitching In
Although we want our children to move out, live on their own, and be successful, there could be some benefit for their extended stay at home.
It could also be about spending some extra quality time with your child. Having them living at home gives you the undivided opportunity of their time. Once they are out of the house, they may not always be available. This time might help you develop a deeper relationship.
8) Have an Exit Strategy
In any of these steps of overcoming a failure to launch, you need to have clear communication with your child. They need to understand how long or how much support you are willing to give.
Setting these clear expectations helps them plan for their exit. It doesn’t mean that once they move on that emotional or moral support will stop. You might stay on as their financial accountability partner to help guide them with their money. You may offer resources like books or articles they could read to increase their knowledge on a particular topic.
The key is to have them understand that even though your monetary support has ended, you are always available to talk or questions.
Many factors can contribute to what can feel like a roller coaster ride; things like our work, health, and stress are just a few.
As our children grow and experience these things for themselves, we need to help guide them, and let our own experiences act as an example. They will experience speed bumps along the way, and it’s our job to help smooth them out, but eventually, they need to navigate on their own.
