Parklets
I have an anecdote from Halloween - holiday here, maybe not so much in parts of Europe. The street has once again become a site of great interest to us as restaurants in San Francisco, a deeply restaurant oriented city, struggle to survive Covid-led economic ruin by 'parkletting'. For those readers who may not know, the 'parklet' was an invention of Re-bar, a San Francisco-based collective, for International No Car Day.
The first parklet appeared here - maybe elsehwere? too? since International No Car Day or Car Free Day is international - on Valencia Street in the late 90s. It was some artificial turf, a couple of aluminum lawn chairs, a fake palm tree, a boom box cd player (typical 90s tech) and a few hearty players in hawaiian shirts reading and smoking (before CA non-smoking laws) They had rented a parking space for the day.
Soon after this performance, "parklets" began to be designed and went in front of interested cafes and restaurants as "extra space" - creating some discussion around homeless using them for beds, the "sit/lie" law which was voted in to deter residents sitting or lying on the public space of the sidewalk and so forth.
In Covid times, blocking off streets to allow for socially-distanced dining and night-life has become the way. Valencia Street is traffick free from Thursday to Sunday now to help faltering businesses. We are an eminently resilient city so this gesture to the street is not only common, but an 'ethos' of San Francisco, as was the resistance to Sit/Lie, and the many legal/illegal seated readings and musical jams that protested it.
Anyway, the parkletts go in now, some rather official and obnoxiously private dining spaces for yuppie restaurants we already avoided or must avoid due to boring clients and prices.
But, Halloween is a holiday of the street and has been since it was started...when anarchists and punks did 'tricks' upon places they did not like; and dressed up and tossed eggs and ran away.
Bivoulab.orgset up a portable screen (now deliciously lightweight) and a small cubi projector (4 x 6") also deliciously simple and lightweight and portable, and we screened Japanese monster films, back lit, and ran the audio through the JBL speaker (also portable and lightweight). This was our gesture this year to the street. A cinema.
And, what came to pass for myself was this incredible feeling of being home once we could sit and listen and when neighbors came around - all socially distanced - and I realized then and there that probably the most difficult and most missed part of our existence under Covid (after the thousands of deaths which could have be avoided in this country) was missing going to theatres --small or large--- to sit with other humans to watch a screen ===and the very unsatisfactory replacement of individuated seeing films on a home screen or on Zoom.
I was so moved to feel that kind of space again for even a few hours...the SOCIAL SPACE of cinema.
We all need to speak on these losses - so I am speaking of them; It's more than impressive the musicians getting on Zoom, and the performances, and the talks and panels that have gone on from the arts culture, which is also remarkably resilient, but there is simply no trade off at all for attending a film in a public venue. Not for me. mollymolly hankwitz - she/her http://bivoulab.org

The night has been advertised by multiple commercials in the civilian’s homes, and even dead bodies littered on some residence lawns. It’s dusk on a Thursday in February. The gates to the Fire and Ice Festival are lowered after hours of waiting in the biting Chicago tundra, and the crowd, over 4,000 strong, rushes in. Most are expecting a night of drunken freedom, cozied up by the outdoor heaters that promise a warm welcome, but some foresee the chaos bound to erupt across the lawn.
The first act takes the stage, and anyone who isn’t inebriated, courtesy of the open bar, is perceptive enough to realize that, no, that’s not Kanye West. Instead they are mesmerized by the lyrical lip syncher Dante Yeast—he looks enough like him, it’s better not to question it. One would think that the O’Sheas, Vasiles, and the Fausts all gathered in one spot would spell disaster, yet the evening rolls on without a hitch, despite the tensions slowly building in its periphery. Fausts members, too, are scattered across the ocean of bodies, but some faces are missing, figureheads who pull the strings.
Maybe they’re absorbed by the crowd; maybe they thought better of attending, but there’s a sense of unease that settles in the air. It’s not quite right, but no one can put a finger on why. Another beer, and the thought is lost is the swell of the music—if they didn’t know any better, they’d think the bass replicates the sound of distant explosions.
You’re free to start plotting. You can start posting starters/threads tomorrow, February 20th, 2020 at 7:30PM CST ! Part II coming February 24th ( Plot Slots can be found below the cut ! )
We’re going to allow each person to choose two plot slots for two characters max .If there are any leftovers, we’ll let members know when they can sign up for thirds.
You’ll notice that some of these plots are public, so feel free to have your character react to them/ notice them even if they aren’t happening directly to your character. However, if something feels like it happened privately to another character, please check in with their Mun to see if it’s okay for your character to know.
To be clear: these are not the only things that happen to your character during this plot drop and you are more than welcome to cook up your own trouble.
To sign up for a plot slot message the main! You can start doing that as soon as right now!
CHARACTER A, CHARACTER B, CHARACTER C, are approached by the venue to play as impersonators for the opening act of the show. However, it turns out…they are the show along with other noteworthy impersonators.
CHARACTER D & CHARACTER E end up camped out at the ticket box office on the other side of the lawn seats. They want a refund for the musical event after their cards were erroneously charged the next day on ADAM & EVE. Much to their surprise they come face to face with CHARACTER F( Faust ).
AUTUMN DAWSON is shitfaced prior to arriving at the music festival. They try to crowd surf before the opening act, and would get immediately dropped if NATHAN BURR didn’t catch their fall.
CHARACTER I & CHARACTER J purchased tickets to meet the bands backstage. They are led by the security detail of the event to two tents filled with a scent of gunpowder. Upon further inspection, they find a crate of fireworks. Do what you will.
CHARACTER K jumps on stage to hijack the mic and accidentally falls and breaks their ankle.
CHARACTER L & CHARACTER M are dosed with PCP by a stranger serving up “free” cocktails. Everything is a blur and they both snap back to reality an hour later, but they’re in the middle of an intense fist fight.
EFFIE FAUST & CHARACTER O engage in a mud wrestling contest that is being judged by no one whatsoever.
CHARACTER P & CHARACTER Q make out in a port-o-potty, but realize shortly after they’re locked inside. It’s up to CHARACTER R to either let them out...or tip them over.
CHARACTER S is mistaken as Pat Benatar. ASLI DEMIR drunkenly convinces them to go on stage to sing LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD.
CHARACTER U & CHARACTER V go hard on the alcoholic beverages & psychedelic treats at the start of the festival, by the end of it neither of them know where their shoes or wallets are.
CHARACTER W finds their soulmate in a drunken stupor and grinds on them for the better half of two hours, only to realize the grindee is ZHI ROU, who has been uncomfortably shifting away from them this entire time.
CHARACTER Y breaks all of their glow sticks and covers themselves in the liquid. It’s all fun and games until that shit starts to burn. CHARACTER Z does their best to quench CHARACTER Y with every bottled water they can find.
CHARACTER A1, CHARACTER B1, & CHARACTER C1 are hired security guards for the event. They have no clue who hired them to do it.
INGRID VASILE starts to overdose on COCAINE. LEV VASILE notices their struggle and assists them to the med tent. DOMINIC MURPHY is around the med tent and notices the commotion.
CHARACTER F1 tries to charge their phone using the musical equipment & gets electrocuted. Also it starts to play the most recent song listened to on their phone which is SONG OF THEIR CHOICE.
GRIFFIN DYER is held up at security when they try to enter the venue, because they tried to smuggle in a small animal. CHARACTER H1 isn’t really security and jacks the animal instead.
SERENITY MICHAELS starts to question their sanity when they see a small animal run in circles in front of them and jet off towards the direction of the port-o-potty.
RACHEL BYRNE feels something small and furry scaling the back of their dress, and, assuming it’s someone’s hand, slaps DAHLIA CAVALLI in the mouth before the small animal scurries away and they have to apologize.
CHARACTER L1 chases the small animal and just when they are sure they’ve caught it, the animal bites them on the neck. CHARACTER M1, who is higher than a motherfucker and hallucinating, sees CHARACTER L1 cradling their neck and automatically assumes a vampiric transformation is happening. CHARACTER L1 has to survive the following attack from a stranger with a pocket knife.
CHARACTER N1 is on their fifth drink at the venue. They hear a loud slurping noise, only to find the small animal lapping their beer in hand. Out of surprise they scream which causes the animal to shit on their hand and run away. CHARACTER O1 looks on in amazement, wonder, and terror as CHARACTER N1 wipes their hand on an unknowing CHARACTER P1. CHARACTER O1 is conflicted if they should say anything but takes a Snapchat video of the whole scenario anyway. It goes viral on Tik Tok the following evening.
The small animal finally gets caught by SANTIAGO PEREZ in a battle that lasts 10 minutes. The small animal is then given to CHARACTER R1 whom they assume is the owner.
CHARACTER S1 is lost to the world, and passes out directly in front of CHARACTER T1 that had just spent twenty minutes in line for a cup of water. The cup of water is spilled on top of CHARACTER S1.
NAOMI WASHINGTON & CHARACTER V1 become instant buddies when they chant to the sound of “SHOTS” around the crowd. IRINA KOSHKIN takes this literally and pulls out their gun ready to fire.
CHARACTER X1, CHARACTER Y1, CHARACTER Z1 all show up to the venue wearing the same exact outfit. You have declared them your number 1 enemy for the entirety of the music festival.
CHARACTER A2 is high as fuck and thinks they’re making a flower crown for CHARACTER B2…..except it’s a crown of shrooms instead. CHARACTER B2 wears the crown, but has to swat CHARACTER C2 away who keeps trying to eat them.
CHARACTER D2, CHARACTER E2, CHARACTER F2 suffer from dehydration. They try to find help at the med tent, but they can’t find where it is.
ROSA LEON gets handsy with the bartender at the open bar and leads them away for a quick fuck, allowing RYAN HAYES and CHARACTER I2 to raid the bar freely.
CHARACTER J2 is the aforementioned bartender and realizes a moment too late their station is being cleared out. Instead of returning to their position, they throw on some neon bracelets and join the party.
CHARACTER K2 is doing some sick backflips in the middle of the crowd and are called out by the currently performing act mid-set for drawing attention away from the stage. CHARACTER K2 does another backflip to retaliate, but accidentally kicks CHARACTER L2 in the face.
JESSE VALENCIA hijacks a ELECTRIC BLUE STRATOCASTER from the backstage, and they are not caught.
DAVUT DEMIR feels like they’re being watched and finds a silhouette with a rifle narrowed in on them perched upon a nearby building. They quickly retreat to find OPHELIA O’SHEA and P2 and warn them about the occurrence, who realize there are multiple snipers surrounding the pavilion.
CHARACTER Q2 swears they heard a sound of explosions over the music, being in front nearest to the stage. They grab the microphone and scream, “WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE.” CHARACTER R2 & CHARACTER S2 start to openly panic.
CHARACTER T2 (O’Shea) gets into a physical altercation with CHARACTER U2 (Vasile). They don’t stop until one or the other is knocked unconscious.
ANDREA REED & BIRDIE MENDOZA try to leave the event, but notice that they’re trapped in the auditorium. CHARACTER X2 makes it to their vehicle, but is stuck in place by the surrounding vehicles around them. Unable to escape fully, they return back to the venue.
CHARACTER Y2 hates their life at this music venue, because they’re stuck behind a rather sweaty individual. Their sweat keeps hitting them in the face, and at one point, they catch it in their mouth. It incites a ferocious bout of vomiting, and CHARACTER Z2 is trying to help, thinking they’ve been drugged, but CHARACTER Y2 can’t even explain what it is that made them sick.
TATIANA BLANTER is hit with a spare bullet, but no one is able to find where the source is. As no one around seems to have their gun out. CHARACTER B3 conceals their weapon perfectly.
NOVA DEVERAUX suffers a panic attack due to the crowd gathered, and clings onto CLARA DAVILLA who is unable to get them to the med tent.
CHARACTER E3 feels something warm splash on their face. They are unsure if it’s warm beer or urine. They’re pretty sure it’s warm beer, but remain conflicted the rest of the festival. CHARACTER F3 offers the shirt off their back for CHARACTER E3 to wipe the liquid off their face.
CHARACTER G3 is doing photography for the event, but realizes midway through the show that the performers aren’t who they say they are. They spot a face they know to be Faust affiliated in the crowd and scurry off toward the exit, only to be stopped by CHARACTER H3 (Faust) at the door.
MILES ST CLARE is the first to notice the lack of Fausts at the start of the music venue. They make their way to the police station in hopes of figuring it out, but instead they encounter burning police cars and chaos.

Art 50 Years After Stonewall | Fresno State | art exhibition | The Munro Review
On the night of June 28, 1969, history was made. Not just gay history, but all history. The Stonewall uprising, sparked by a group of LGBTQ patrons who fought back after an all-too-regular raid by New York police, was a pivotal moment for the gay rights movement.
Pictured above: A work by Mohammed Fayaz is part of ‘Art 50 Years After Stonewall’ at Fresno State.
An impressive new world-class art exhibition at Fresno State’s Phebe Conley Gallery helps mark the 50th anniversary of Stonewall (just a little late because of COVID-19). The show opened Thursday, Aug. 19, and runs through Oct. 31. CMAC producer Kyle Lowe and I were there on opening day shooting a story that will be the basis for the next episode of “The Munro Review on CMAC.” Until then, here are some basics — plus a quick Facebook Live video I recorded on scene — to give you a taste:
The title: “Nobody Promised You Tomorrow: Art 50 Years After Stonewall.” (The transgender artist and activist Marsha P. Johnson made that saying famous.)
The original venue: The exhibition was organized by the Brooklyn Museum and opened there in 2019. The Fresno exhibition was reopened by Fresno State’s Center for Creativity and the Arts, which was able to again bring together most of the pieces from the original exhibition. The new show also includes works from three West Coast artists that were added to the mix. To recap: This is the second venue at which the exhibition can be viewed.
The backstory on how Fresno State landed such a prestigious museum show: It’s thanks to the McClatchy Fresno Arts Endowment of the James B. McClatchy Foundation. Officials there wanted to bring three blockbuster shows — a lineup that together is costing $1 million — to Fresno and spread them between the Fresno Art Museum, Arte Americas and the university. This is the first of that trio to open.
SPONSORED CONTENT
Cindy Urrutia, director of the Center for Creativity and the Arts, traveled to New York with Martin Valencia, chair of the university’s art department, to scout out an exhibition. They fell in love with “Stonewall.”
“We thought it would be great for Fresno and reached out to the Brooklyn Museum and asked if we could reorganize it, Urrutia says. “And they agreed.”
The themes: The exhibition is divided into four themes: revolt, commemoration, care and desire.
‘Nobody Promised You Tomorrow: Art 50 Years After Stonewall’ runs at Fresno State through Aug. 31.
The artists: This exhibition isn’t a dusty chunk of history. All the works are by artists born after Stonewall. They react and respond to the famous event with anger, playfulness, sadness and more. Diversity is key: Many different communities (Black, Brown, LGBTQ, White) played a role in the events at Stonewall, and the exhibition proudly explores that scale and scope.
Quick look: Here’s my Facebook video to give you a taste of the exhibition. (Remember, an upcoming episode of “The Munro Review on CMAC” will give a much more extensive report.)
The details: During the exhibition, the gallery will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and by appointment Sunday. Admission is free.
The Munro Review has no paywall but is financially supported by readers who believe in its non-profit mission of bringing professional arts journalism to the central San Joaquin Valley. You can help by signing up for a monthly recurring paid membership or make a one-time donation of as little as $3. All memberships and donations are tax-deductible.

the end of all things
pairing: chris dixon x reader warning(s): none note: the end / the end of all things - panic! at the disco / 8,050 words
Lay us down We're in love
When the wedding day finally came around, it became everything that you ever imagined.
The months leading up to the big day, which took years of planning on its own, was full of appointments with the wedding planner, late nights of booking, and a lot of searching in between. Both you and Chris used the weekends to travel; searching for the one spot that would hold dear to your hearts. First it was a train to Bordeaux to look at the vineyard venues, then a visit to Spain's sun-kissed coast of Malaga, a trip to Cochem Castle in Germany, and numerous of other places. The idea of having a wedding in Jersey was appealing, but you both knew you wanted something more. Chris was willing to give you the world to have your dream wedding, and you were thankful.
It was one month after searching through venues, numerous phone calls and plane tickets abroad, that you and Chris found the exact spot you wanted to become husband and wife. Villa Pizzo in Lake Como, Italy. It's a luxury lakeside villa with a chalky pink and peach facade with running English-inspired gardens and the most amazing view. It was rustic and chic, elegant, but not too glossy for yours and Chris' humble minds. You could remember walking hand-in-hand with Chris down a tree-lined path from the villa to the lakeside terrace, and in that moment you knew that was the place you wanted to share your vows to Chris with your closest family and friends. There was no doubt in yours and Chris' minds that this was the place you two had been waiting to stumble upon.
You waited until the last minute possible, like usual with most things, to find your wedding gown. The colors of the wedding had been a debatable topic between you and Chris for months, so you waited until all of the decisions were finalized so you could pick out the dresses. In the past year or so you had window-shopped dresses around Jersey, but never found one you were enthused about, so you decided to try London. You flew with Chris' mum to London, where you met with your mum and best friend to scan the bridal shops in hopes of finding the perfect one. The first day was unsuccessful for you in terms of finding a dress, but the gowns for you bridesmaids were found. It was a Amsale NY, rose colored dress in the Corbin style; hand-ruched chiffon with a criss-cross in the bust, and an empire waist to compliment the inverted v-neckline. It would compliment the light blush hues you and Chris agreed on.
The second day in London, upon the second hour and second shop scanned, you found your wedding gown. You could remember standing on the rounded stool in front of a dozen mirrors, looking at yourself in the white dress, and seeing the teary-eyed smiles from those behind you on the sofa. The three women on the sofa were crying, and you felt beautiful for the first time in a very long time. That was when you knew you were wearing the dress.
It was a Rosa Clara, Alejo line gown. Your mother wore a Rosa Clara gown to her wedding, so it almost felt like fate as you decided your own. It was a mix of a sensual bodice and ball-gown-style skirt that created a striking contrast. It was a princess-style beaded lace with a tulle gown that flattered your figure. A dipping neckline to an empire waist with lace that showed off the perfect amount of skin. It was so simple, something that you wanted. You felt stunning for once, and you just knew that Chris would love it too.
After the dress was picked, the suit was formally fitted, and the invites were sent out, the bachelor and bachelorette parties were thrown. Even though the parties were typically thrown the night before weddings, neither yours or Chris' schedule didn't confine to the events, so instead the parties were thrown the weekend before. Chris had whisked away with his best friends to Valencia for his bachelor party where he met up with everyone for plenty of drinking and nights out. It was a typical lads holiday without all of the hook-ups, and Chris considered it a weekend well-spent.
Meanwhile your best friends, which happened to be quite a group, surprised you with a trip to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. You previously told them you wanted a quiet bachelorette party, maybe just even a brunch one morning, but instead you were gifted with a plane ticket to Las Palmas for a weekend on a yacht with plenty of shopping, swimming, and sunbathing in preparation for the big day. They even surprised you with customized tees, sashes that said you were a bride-to-be, and buckets of champagne at the clubs on nights out. It was one of the best weekends of your life, or as Gee called it; "One last fling before the ring."
When you and Chris returned home that Monday, neither of you were still drunk, sunburnt, nor had indecent information or photos spread on Twitter, so it was considered a weekend well done.
One week later, as all of the pre-wedding hype had died down, the day was just around the corner. The families, friends, and you and Chris couple to Italy in preparation. The first day in Italy was spent relaxing, enjoying the coast and its water in the small amount of time left before everything would come together. You could still remember clinking glasses with Chris as you two sipped wine on a boat through Lake Como one afternoon.
The day before the wedding, after the reception practice and run-through at the ceremony location earlier in the day, you and Chris threw a small party at the Grand Hotel Serbelloni for the guests. The guest ranged from family to "associates" that you and Chris weren't even really close to, but you wanted them to be a part of it as well. Everyone in Italy for the wedding gathered on the patio outside, sipped on fine Italian wine, and you managed to open up a few wedding gifts as well which was like matching wine glasses with frosted words on them, and an embroidered pillow with yours and Chris' initials and the wedding date stitched on the front.
It was just a fun time under a patio of twinkle lights with everyone having a good time together.
Into the late afternoon as the sun slowly sat behind the horizon, you broke away from Freya and walked over to Chris, who was in a conversation with one of his close friends and Callum, and sat down on the arm of his chair. He grinned up at you and you kissed him gently on the forehead.
So far, everything in Italy had gone by smoothly. There wasn't a problem with anyone arriving late, booking hotel rooms or rooming situations with the hotel, the wedding practice went by without a flaw, and now all of the families and friends were getting along well. It was actually better than you, and Chris, expected.
You looked over to the edge of the patio where your mum was deep into a conversation with Chris' mum and aunt, causing you to laugh at their loud tones and smiling faces. Next to them your friends were mingling with Chris', and all of the dads were getting along just well. The small things that kept you nervous and anxious were panning out to be just fine.
"Everyone seems to be having a good time." Chris said, sliding an arm around your waist to bring you into his lap. He kissed you on the cheek and smiled. "Our mum's haven't stopped talking since they arrived."
You laughed, nodding, before reaching over and grabbing his wine glass to take a sip. "Expect that at every family gathering from now on. My mum can't keep her mouth closed around your family." Looking back at Chris, you raised a timid brow. "Sure you want to go through with tomorrow then?" You teased.
"Absolutely sure," he said kissing you gently on the cheek, then a quick one on the lips before someone else approached you two.
The next day was the big day.
The whole hotel was buzzing early that morning due to the fact that it was the day of the wedding.
From the room service orders nearly breaking the kitchen, to the bridesmaids and other girls were running up and down the hallways with pairs of shoes and minor complications with dresses, the entire hotel was on a lockdown to make sure the day went by smoothly.
In separate rooms, you and Chris prepared for the big day. You two ate breakfast, got dressed, and done the final preparations separately. That entire morning all of the girls were darting in and out of your room, asking which shoes looked better, if their makeup was okay, or if they should keep their hair up or down. You knew the wedding photographer who slipped into your room earlier was having a field day with it all. You gave a lot of advice while sitting in the chair, getting your own makeup done.
Yes, Sarah, the rose heels look good with the bridesmaids dress.
Yes, Emily, your makeup looked fine.
And Gee, your hair looks better down.
You swore that without the cup of tea you had been sipping on, you would have already blown up. All of the stress was finally settling on your shoulders and the tension grew in your mind. However, you had to keep the fact that it was all about to pay off, in the back of your head too.
After you were finished with hair and makeup, you decided to take a quick break. Walking out onto your balcony with a cup of tea, you settled down on the edge of the terrace, and just took a deep breath while admiring the view. It was a perfect, sunny day over Lake Como, and it was everything you ever dreamed. The houses and villas were vibrant in color, there were little boats litering the blue water. It all looked magical and you had to take a step back to rememeber that this was where you were getting married.
When you were younger, you had a whole notebook dedicated to your future wedding. Back then you wanted a small church ceremony in Bath with your closest family and friends, the bridesmaids would be wearing red, and you would be in a large ballgown. Now, as time progressed, you realized what you truly wanted. And this was it. A ceremony with the best people you knew, in the most beautiful dress, with a magical location you would never forget. This was your dream, and it was all coming true.
As you remained outside on the balcony in your own thoughts and ideas, you heard music come from the room behind you. You spun around, sipping on your tea, to see Freya and Stephanie and Nia dancing in the room to a remix of Beyonce's Drunk In Love. They were dancing wildly, waving their arms or holding up their dresses with the brightest smiles on their faces as they did so. You laughed, shaking your head, and reminded yourself of the good. This wasn't all going to be stressful. You had to remind yourself that it was your wedding, and whatever happened, you were going to leave Italy married to the love of your life. And that was enough to make you smile.
At eleven o'clock that morning, the family, friends, and others left Grand Hotel Serbelloni. They all took separate boats to Villa Pizzo, the location for the wedding ceremony. That is where the ceremony and reception would follow outside. The boats came to and from the hotel and picked up all the guest before whisking them away to the villa, and you and the bridesmaids were the last to go.
After docking in Villa Pizzo, you and your "team" of girls, which was the bridesmaids, made your way into the villa for last minute checks as the guests got settled in their seats outside. Inside the villa, in the main room, you looked in the gold-trimmed mirror and smiled. The wedding dress, your hair, the makeup, all of it was seemingly perfect to you. The dress was simple, your hair was down in loose waves, and with light mascara and pink lips, you felt beautiful. And you knew Chris would think the same.
"Everyone is seated. It's almost time." Your mum said as she slid into the main room of the villa. Everyone in the room did last minute checks on hair, makeup, and shoes, and then nodded at her. She looked at you, noticed your beaming smile, and thought you were glowing. She leaned against the doorframe, one hand over her heart with wet eyes, and smiled. "You look so beautiful, dear." She said. "I cannot believe my daughter is getting married today."
You nodded and looked around the room. You had your bridesmaids, from Sarah to your best friend since kindergarten, all dressed in rose gowns with their bouquets in hand. You wanted to start crying at how beautiful they looked, but you knew you had to hold it back. For the sake of the hours of makeup.
"Come on," Sarah stepped forward, handing you your bouquet and looping her arm through yours. "Let's go get married." She said and everyone in the room laughed before walking out of the villa.
As your mum left just minutes before, she made it in perfect timing for the ceremony. Together, you and your bridesmaids, and the groomsmen all made it to the path. It was a small, narrow gravel path that lead straight to the overlook where everyone was already seated.
All of the groomsmen made their way out, and then the bridesmaids. You lingered behind just a few feet and there, met with your father. When your eyes met his, he lit up like a Christmas tree. His eyes were wide and bright, and you had never seen him smile so large. He admired you in the gown, how stunning you looked, and he was so thankful he was here to witness this day.
When you approached him, he gently kissed your forehead. "You're growing up on me, darling." He whispered, and the soft instrumental music began to play in the distance, signaling that it was her time to go. You smiled at him, kissing his cheek, before looping an arm through his, and starting down the path together.
As you neared the steps to walk down, you looked up to see everyone seated, looking in your direction. Smiling, your father helped you down the stairs slowly, and then together, walked down the aisle of people. For a split second, as you neared the aisle, you looked at the guests. In the mix of everyone, you spotted yours and Chris' family, and then the friends who were a part of this special day. Starting down the aisle between the seats, you looked up and met eyes with Chris. He had his hands clasped in front of his face, shielding the brightest smile, and his eyes were wet with tears. You could feel the eyes of everyone on you, but that wasn't on your mind at that moment. Chris finally dropped his hands to reveal his perfect smile, and you were sure you were wearing one just the same.
At the end of the aisle, Chris stepped down to meet you and your father. You and your father shared a small kiss on the cheek, and he and Chris exchanged nice words before Chris took you by the hand and lead you back to your standing positions in front of the minister.
"You look so beautiful, love." Chris whispered as he dropped your hand.
You smiled at him. "And you look so handsome." You whispered back, sharing a smile with your future husband before letting the minister take over.
"Friends and relatives, we have come here today at the invitation of Christopher Michael Dixon and (y/f/m/l/n) to share in the joy of their wedding. This outward celebration that we shall see and hear, I believe, is an expression of the inner love and devotion they have in their hearts toward one another. I believe marriage is of God, and Chris and (y/n) come today desiring to be united in this sacred relationship of marriage. Who is giving this woman to be married to this man?"
Your father stood from his seat, pressed one hand against his blazer while holding the other up. "Father, my wife and I do." He said before nodding, and then seating again.
The minister nodded and carried on. "The ceremony of marriage in which you come to be united is one of the first and oldest ceremonies in the entire world, celebrated in the beginning in the presence of God himself. Marriage is a gift in that we give ourselves totally to one another. I believe that marriage is a gift given to comfort the sorrows of life and to magnify life’s joys. Marriage is the clasping of hands, the blending of two hearts, the union of two lives into one, and your marriage must stand, not by the authority of Italia, nor by the seal on your wedding certificate, but by the strength and power of the faith and love you have in one another." He paused for a moment, taking in the view of the couple and guests in front of him. "Now, will you please pass your flowers, turn and face one another and join hands to express your vows of love and devotion each to the other."
You turned around and looked at the maid of honor behind you, who was wearing a similar smile, and handed her the bouquet of peach peonies you were holding before turning back around. You turned back and looked at Chris, and gently took his hands in yours. You two looked into each others eyes and smiled so wide you both started giggling, causing the guests to laugh as well. It was only possible for you two to make such a romantic serious thing so silly.
"Chris, do you have some words?"
Chris cleared his throat and gave your hands a slight squeeze. He had been preparing his vows for years now, from the moment he realized that he wanted to marry you, but now, he was sure those words wouldn't even do justice. So he just spoke the truth.
"Our second Christmas together, years ago, I told you that I was lucky to have you. And I want you to know that as I stand here right now, I feel like the luckiest man alive." Chris said. "You are the love of my life and I have known that since the day I met you. There was never anyone or anything else, it was always you. It was always you that I wanted to wake up to in the morning, that I wanted to laugh with at 2 AM over the weirdest things, take drives with, cook with, it was always, and will always be you." You felt the tears brim your eyes, heart bursting with joy as Chris looked you in the eyes and spoke the truth. He smiled and so did you. "I would rather spend one lifetime with you, than face all of the ages of the world alone."
All of the guests cooed, awing and leaned into each other as Chris spoke. Everyone felt their hearts swell with happiness. As Chris finished off, the minister nodded and smiled. "(Y/n) do you have some words?"
There was no pulling out a card or paper with words scribbled on them from the past few weeks, you already knew what you had planned to say.
"In that book which is my memory, on the first page is the chapter when I first met you appear the words, "here begins a new life."" You recited Dante's words that keep a deep meaning in your heart. When you read those words, it had Chris' name printed all over it. "We met years ago. We met in London and that's the end of it all. There is no story of how I come to love through all of this time. I saw you one day I just knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you." You said, squeezing his hands with a bright smile. "I used to never believe in soulmates, that was something I used to be proud of. Now, I'm here today because you are the person that made me believe there was someone out there meant for me. And that's you." You nodded. "And I believe that's fate because out of the 8 million people in London, I had the blessing of meeting you. So, Chris, I'm so happy that the universe brought us together."
The minister nodded and smiled before continuing on the ceremony by reciting Corinthians. "The word of God tells us what love is like and what love does: Love is patient, love is kind, love is not jealous. Love does not brag and is not arrogant. It does not act unbecomingly. It does not seek its own, it is not provoked, and it does not take into account a wrong suffered. It does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth, for love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things, but above all, love never fails."
You felt your heart continue to swell. You couldn't believe this was actually happening.
"Having this kind of love in your hearts for one another, you have chosen to exchange rings as the sign and seal of the promises you are making to one another today."
Turning to look down the aisle, the guests aw'd and you and Chris smiled as two small children walked towards you both with suits on and each holding a pillow with individual rings. Your nephew, and Chris' nephew. You and Chris smiled widely and watched them approach you both before stopping right at the front of the crowd.
The minister turned to Chris. "Do you have a ring for (Y/n)? May I have the ring?" You and Chris dropped hands and he reached out, kissing his nephews forehead before taking the ring off of the pillow. He turned back and handed the ring to the minister.
"(Y/n), do you have a ring for Chris? May I have the ring?" You nodded and turned to your nephew, smiling at him before reaching out and taking the ring off of the pillow. She handed the ring back to the minister. He closed his fist tight and then repeated a message from his notes.
"Rings are very large in their significance. They are made of a precious metal and precious stone, and that reminds us that love is not cheap or common; but indeed love is very costly and dear to us. These rings are also made in a circle and their design tells us that we must keep love continuous throughout our whole lives even as the circle of the ring is continuous. As you wear these rings, whether you are together or apart for even just a moment, may these rings be a constant reminder of the promises you are making to one another this day." He turned to the groom. "Chris, will you please take this ring and place it upon the third finger of (y/n)'s left hand, and holding her hand in yours, please repeat this promise to her saying after me: With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving husband, as God is my witness."
The guests went silent for a moment as Chris took the ring from the ministers open palm. Hands shaking from the nerves, Chris gently laughed and took your hand in his. He held the ring between his index finger and thumb, and then gently slid it onto your third finger. "With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving husband, as God is my witness." Chris brought your hand to his lips and pressed a kiss to your knuckle.
It was a beautiful, simple ring that he had designed himself. Before he proposed, he asked you subtle questions about what kind of wedding ring you would like for months, and you didn't catch on. The weekend you were gone to look for a gown in London, he went to France to design the wedding ring. It was a pear-shaped halo ring with a set of round cut diamonds along the silver band, and perfectly set around the center diamond.
Looking down at your hand as he slid the ring across your finger, a wave of emotions hit you all at once. Your eyes flickered up to meet Chris' and you wanted to cry. He had put so much effort into the wedding it brought tears to your eyes.
The minister looked at you. "(Y/n), will you please take this ring and place it upon the third finger of Chris' left hand, and holding his hand in yours please repeat this promise to him saying after me: With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving wife, as God is my witness."
You nodded and took the silver wedding band out of his palm. You looked at Chris and took his hand, sliding the band over his third finger. "With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful loving wife, as God is my witness." You smiled as the ring slid on fully. It was a special ring for Chris as well- a simple sterling silver band that he wanted, but there was a surprise engraved on the inside that he would have to take it off to see.
Everyone could sense the passion and love flowing between you both as they stood witness. There were giddy smiles and hopeful eyes.
"(Y/n) and Chris, you have come here today before us and before God and have expressed your desire to become husband and wife. You have shown your love and affection by joining hands, and have made promises of faith and devotion, each to the other, and have sealed these promises by the giving and the receiving of the rings. Therefore, it is my privilege as a minister and by the authority given to me by the law of Italia, I now pronounce that you are husband and wife." It was the cue. Chris reached out and slid an arm around your waist. But the minister hesitated and all of the guests laughed. It was clear that Chris was eager to kiss his wife.
The minister chuckled and closed his Bible. "Chris, you may kiss your bride."
And boy, did he.
You laughed as Chris pulled you flush against him and then proceeded to dip you down, letting your lips met. Everyone in the crowd chuckled and laughed loudly at Chris' swift move with you in his arms- as dramatic as he typically was. There was a whistle from the crowd as well. You both were mentally betting it was Ollie or Harry.
You laughed into the kiss before taking Chris' face in your hands and kissing him harder. When he brought you back to your feet, you wrapped your arms around his neck and kissed again. You couldn't believe this. You got to kiss him every day of your life. You got to kiss your husband.
When you two pulled apart in faint laughter, Chris pecked your lips again before you both turned to face the crowd of guest in front of you.
"Ladies and gentlemen, it is my privilege to introduce to you for the first time, Mr. and Mrs. Dixon."
You looked out onto everyone on their feet, smiling and clapping for you both as you clutched Chris' hand. It was odd to remember that when you were a teenager, the last thing you wanted to do was get married. Now you were living with and married to the love of your life. It was insane what just a few years could bring.
Feeling Chris squeeze your hand, you two began to walk down the aisle of people. Everyone began to throw flower petals at you two as you walked down the aisle. You reached down with a free hand and picked up your gown to prevent tripping over it, and then you and Chris started jogging together. Everyone was snapping photos, laughing, or simply watching onto you both. Reaching the stairs that you had went down just minutes ago, Chris stopped mid-jog, bent down, and picked you up. With his arm tucked behind your knees, you laughed and threw your arms around his shoulders as he carried you up the steps.
When Chris reached the top of the steps, he turned around and you both looked at the wave of guests in front of you. You waved wildly at them before Chris continued on down the path with you in his arms.
The reception after the wedding ceremony turned out to be the highlight of the day. Chris kissing you too early and picking you up was pretty great, but the reception had a whole level of its own.
Everyone left the ceremony area and walked down the path next to the lake, admiring the view of the mountains and villas, and to the reception. Before everyone went to the tables where the food would be served, there was a small celebration in between. Along the path, next to the villa, was a large table stacked with champagne flutes. Everyone gathered together and grabbed their own champagne flute, and then all crowded around the couple to congratulate them, and share hugs, and kisses. It was all genuine smiles and hearty laughter all around.
Then as all of the guest made their way to their assigned tables, you and Chris snuck off to take the wedding photos. They were taken along several locations near the villa and lake, all using different poses and genuine smiles with the photographer. Taking their time with the photos, it gave all of the guest time to be settled in their seats, so after a few minutes, you and Chris slowly made your way back.
The reception was held outside on a large patio next to the grand steps leading into the villa, and Lake Como on the other side. It was beautiful. The tables had large centerpieces of flowers with twinkle lights inside to match the white table cloth with light designs along the bottom, and the name cards were printed off in embroidered gold with each name. There was twinkle lights hanging from the villa to the corners of the steps, emitting a beautiful glow in the late afternoon.
After being lead to the reception with a thunderous applause, you and Chris sat down at the designated table in front of everyone. The MC of the night, who was really just Tobi with a microphone, welcomed everyone and made the first toast of the afternoon. Then he called up the Best Man, Chris' best friend since secondary school, who had the best speech that was a mix of old memories that had everyone clutching their stomachs in laughter, but also a bit sentimental at the end. Followed by your Maid of Honor stepped up and gave a quick speech- well, you thought, and then it turned out to be a rap song that everyone was nodding along to. Then it was your father's turn, and he gave a nice word to Chris before the speeches wrapped up.
The food was also a highlight of the night- a buffet of meals sat up for everyone, along with complimentary wine and champagne buckets for each table. You had spent countless hours researching, calling, all for the best catering place in Italy near Lake Como. And as everyone was eating with a smile, you assumed you did well.
The part, besides the ceremony, that had everyone in awe, was the bride and groom's first dance. After eating and socializing with the guests, some of whom you had yet to see that day, you and Chris made your way onto the dance floor.
During the wedding planning, you had dealt with booking the location, the food, and guests, and the one thing you put Chris in charge of was the playlist for the night. Just like the ring he slid onto your finger an hour ago, he had a few tricks up his sleeve and surprises throughout the night. So as you walked hand-in-hand to the dance floor just below the steps, you weren't sure what song would come on.
However, when the first chord of the song played through the speakers, you looked directly at Chris with a shocked look on your face.
Throughout the relationship you had dropped hints of the songs you loved, saying that you would love to have them played at your wedding in the future. And Chris did much of the same.
The song Chris chose for the first dance, was the same song you two danced to in the kitchen at 2 AM right after you two moved in together; Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You by Frankie Valli. The song held a special place in your heart, and now you look back on the memory and smile. You couldn't believe it. The same song you danced to with Chris in the refrigerator light of the kitchen is the same song you danced to at your wedding. Your heart was pounding.
Taking your hand in his, you placed your other hand on Chris' shoulder, and you two danced smoothly across the floor. Each step was precise, smooth, and it was like you two had practiced for months ahead of time. Well, practice does make perfect.
"You're just too good to be true, I can't take my eyes off of you. You'd be like heaven to touch, I wanna hold you so much. At long, last love has arrived, and I thank God I'm alive.." Frankie Valli's voice floated through the patio area.
The twinkle lights set the perfect mood for the first dance as you and Chris danced together. Your bodies were inches apart, hands clasped as Chris' free hand rested on the curve of your waist. It was such an intimate moment, the entire patio was quiet. Some of the guest were pulling out phones and cameras, taking photos or pictures, or simply admiring the moment of beauty in front of them.
"Pardon the way that I stare, there's nothing else to compare. The sight of you leaves me weak, there are no words left to speak." You met Chris' eyes and smiled brightly at him, your heart feeling as happy as ever. He chuckled at your smile before he placed a soft kiss on your forehead. "But if you feel like I feel, please let me know that it's real. You're just too good to be true, I can't take my eyes off of you."
Chris took a step back and used the speed of your rocks to spin you around at the upbeat part of the song. You smiled, twirling softly to the music and whistles from the guest, before he pulled you back into him. This time you two were further apart, but the dance picked up. You two were moving faster and faster across the dance floor with each smooth step. Following his lead, you looked at Chris and when you both met eyes, he began to sing to you.
"I love you baby, and if it's quite alright, I need you baby. To the warm and lonely nights, I love you baby, trust me when I say.."
All of the guests were rocking to the music, some dancing or swaying in their seats. Your mum and dad were in each others arms, smiling as they watched you, their only daughter and joy, have her first dance.
"Oh pretty baby, don't bring me down I pray. Oh pretty baby, now that I've found you, stay, and let me love you baby, let me love you." Chris sang to you, eyes full of love and pure bliss as he watched you smile and hear you slightly giggle at his singing voice. He felt a rush of happiness straight to the heart with you, his wife.
With one last twirl Chris, this time, pulled you into him. Your body was flush against his, arm tucked under his to press flat against his shoulder, and he held you by placing a warm hand on your lower back. You two continued to sway and the music died down to the piano once again, and Chris continued to sing to you.
"You're just too good to be true, I can't take my eyes off of you. You'd be like heaven to touch, I wanna hold you so much. At long, last love has arrived, and I think God I'm alive.. You're just too good to be true, I can't take my eyes off of you."
And just like that night at 2 AM, dancing in the kitchen in the refrigerator light when the song ended, Chris kissed the tip of your nose. You giggled and he laughed.
"I adore you." Chris repeated your exact words from that night, raising a hand to tuck a lock of hair behind your ear.
You raised a hand to cuff his, running your fingers along the top of his hand. "I love you." You whispered.
"I love you too." He said before pressing a soft, but loving kiss against your lips.
A second later as the song slowed down to a quiet whisper, an eruption of applause echoed around the patio. You and Chris laughed, sharing one last kiss before turning around and looking at everyone. It was not even a second later that Baby Got Back came on, replacing the first dance song, and the bridesmaids and groomsmen started their way onto the floor.
"Come on," you grabbed Chris' hand, "before we get drug into this." He chuckled and followed your lead.
The rest of the reception was much like the wedding ceremony, it went by without a problem. After a few dance numbers from the bridesmaids and the groomsmen's attempts at rapping, everyone flooded the dance floor for a night of fun. The playlist had everyone swaying in their seat or waving their arms on the dance floor.
After a bit of dancing, it was time for the garter and the bouquet tossing. The groomsmen were first and you watched as Chris tossed the (very expensive) garter over his head, and it landed straight in Josh's hands. It might have just been because the others immediately ran with the garter was thrown, and it went directly to him. When it was the bridesmaids turn, you knew exactly who you were throwing it too, especially after Josh caught the garter. Standing on the dance floor, you faked throwing the bouquet over your head and instead turned around and threw it straight to Freya. Everyone laughed at the move while Josh and Freya only shook their heads at the hints that were thrown.
Then it was the cake. Everyone gathered around the large table and you and Chris cut the cake together. It was a small cake, nothing too big or too extravagent compared to the rest of the wedding. It was just a two-tier, textured buttercream cake with fondant flowers and ruffles. And of course, just as you predicted it to happen, Chris shoved the cake into your mouth, and you did the same to him. Smearing the frosting across his lips, he chuckled before reaching out and using the heels of his palms to hold your face, and then kissed you with a large smile. You laughed against his lips as you kissed him, feeling the frosting pressing against the tip of your nose.
"Oh my goodness," your mother laughed while helping you wipe the frosting off your nose and chin.
"I know." You laughed, wiping off your hands on the napkin. "I knew he would do it, so I did it to him too."
"Well, I'm certainly not going to say it wasn't funny." She lightly laughed and you shook your head. "But I do know one thing," she folded the napkin in her palm and held your face tenderly in her hands. You looked into her eyes and she smiled at you. "You got yourself a good one, dear."
You nodded. "I know. I think soo too." You said before glancing at Chris who was chuckling with Simon and Cal across the dance floor. He was certainly something else.
Even though you thought most of the night was over, Chris had one last thing up his sleeve. You were walking around the patio, talking to those you had yet to see, and thanking them for coming. There was still endless hugs and cheek kisses to go around, even hours into the wedding reception.
As the sun began to set, Chris knew that it was time for his last surprise of the night. He walked over to Tobi who had the microphone and asked for it, telling everyone to please take their seats, except you. You stood at a table next to your grandparents when Chris called you out once again, leaving you in a confused state as you walked to the dance floor again. You were confused, but still looked at Chris with a hopeful smile. When he handed the microphone back to Tobi whom was sat up next to the lake edge, Chris took your hand and guided you across the dance floor and straight to the steps of the villa. All of the eyes from the patio were on you both.
Looking up at the stairs, along the surface between steps, sat a white grand piano. It had been placed there by workers of the Villa during the cutting of the cake. You had no idea what was going on until Chris guided you over by the hand, and straight up the steps to the piano.
"Chris.." you trailed off as you both reached the piano.
"Just trust me, okay?" He said, breaking loose of your hand and lowered down onto the piano bench. You pressed your hip against the piano, resting your arm on top as you watched him closely. "I wanted to make this day as special as possible."
Ever since you encouraged Chris into learning how to play the piano, he took advantage of the piano you both had. He had spent countless days in there learning songs to play them for you, but you never expected this. Since he proposed in Paris years ago, Chris decided to dedicate his free time at home, to learn one of your favorite songs. You adored the song and it always brought you to tears every time you heard it. So Chris made it a priority of his to learn the song for this special day.
At the first key, that's when it hit you. You had no idea Chris was going to play this song on the piano for you, hell, you didn't even know there was going to be a piano. But at the sound of the first key of the song, you stared at Chris in complete awe as tears formed in your eyes.
"Whether near or far, I am always yours. Any change in time, we are young again.."
Chris was always poked fun of for his singing, many times it was you jokingly telling him to "stick to his day job" but at this moment, as he sang your favorite song, you swore you had never heard a voice more beautiful.
Your heart felt heavy, listening to the love of your life sing and focus on the piano keys as he played. There was something so raw, so real and true about the song that simply made you feel in love. And as you watched your husband, oh your husband, sing the song especially for you, you felt a new love for Chris, deeper than you ever imagined.
"Lay us down, we're in love.. lay us down, we're in love.."
When Chris gained confidence with his fingers, he looked up at you and saw the tears forming in your eyes. He smiled, fighting back his own emotions; you were his wife. The beautiful, sweet creature leaning against the piano in a white gown was you, and you was his wife. Chris would never be able to wrap his mind around that.
He smiled again before looking back down at his hands, continuing to play the right keys. Everyone on the patio, or the lawn near the reception, stopped their movements, their batting eyes and conversations, and sat in pure awe of the scene in front of them. Even Harry, who was already three drinks down and having the time of his life, stood still with every emotion of love running through him. A stranger could waltz in and feel the amount of love between the married couple.
"In these coming years many things will change, but the way I feel will remain the same.." Chris' fingers moved to a different set of keys. "Lay us down, we're in love.. lay us down, we're in love.."
When Chris finished off the song with a piano solo, the guest erupted into a thunderous applause. You swiftly moved around the piano and wrapped your arms around Chris' shoulders, body nearly shuddering as the tears slipped down your cheeks. Chris buried his face in your neck and his arms instinctively slithered around your waist, holding you close.
You loved that song, so much, but now you loved it even more. Now it was yours and Chris' song, and that was all that mattered. Even singing someone else's words, you felt the raw emotion of Chris' voice as he told you how much he loved you. And you felt nothing but love for Chris back, but ten times stronger.
"Don't cry on me, love." Chris chuckled lightly, kissing your cheek.
You sniffled and leaned back, wiping your eyes before laughing through the tears. "I love you so much."
Chris nodded, nestling his nose agains yours. "I love you too."
To end the day's celebrations, the marriage between you and Chris, everyone gathered back on the patio where the ceremony was held earlier in the day. The sun had set long before and everyone was wrapped in coats or small blankets to fight off the chill in the wind, others were finishing off drinks, and all leaning against each other for support. They gathered to watch the very end of the celebrations; a firework show above Lake Como.
You and Chris stood in front of everyone, one arm around the other and watched the show. Around you the young ones were running around with sparklers, making designs in the darkness and giggling.
Watching the fireworks explode in the sky, Chris' arm dropped down from your shoulders to your waist, pulling you against him. He kissed your temple and smiled. "I'm so glad I got to marry you." He whispered and you smiled before sharing a kiss.
"By the way," you said when your lips broke apart, "nice Lord Of The Rings reference in your vows earlier."
Chris chuckled. "I was hoping you would catch on." He said before you two shared one more kiss and continued to watch the fireworks explode into an array of colors and beauty in the dark sky.
Towards end of the firework show, Tobi stood to the side and watched as everyone smiled up at the sky. Even though he had been the MC, he had the best night with his friends. It was a magical day, something he will always remember, and he was sure everyone would agree. It was full of laughter and smiles, love, and joy for everyone in attendance.
"Ladies and gentlemen, today we experienced the death of a bachelor."

Real Madrid host Manchester City in a mouth-watering Champions League tie between two European heavyweights on Wednesday night.
City’s Premier League title challenge is over and while they are preparing for another Carabao Cup final appearance in March with their FA Cup campaign still ongoing, the Champions League remains the big prize for Pep Guardiola this term.
Raheem Sterling will take centre stage on Wednesday. Last week, the England international gave an interview with AS where he hailed Zinedine Zidane and labelled Real Madrid as “fantastic” when question about a move to the Spanish giants.
All eyes will be on the Man City star as Guardiola’s side look to take a decent result back to Manchester with them.

They met again at the semi-final stage in 2015-16, with an own goal from Fernando separating the two after 180 minutes with Real marching on to meet neighbours Atletico in the final.
Betting odds
Real Madrid to win: 2/1 Man City to win: 7/5 Draw: 14/5
Team news
Real Madrid will be without Eden Hazard after the Belgian suffered a recurrence of his ankle injury on Saturday.
Hazard, in only his second match back following an ankle problem which had seen him sidelined since November, limped off in the second half of Los Blancos’ 1-0 loss at Levante and is now expected to be out for around two months.
The 29-year-old’s absence means Gareth Bale could be in contention for a starting spot on Wednesday, the Welsh winger having been left out of the squad for Saturday’s trip to the Ciutat de Valencia after suffering from gastroenteritis in midweek.
Real Madrid possible XI: Courtois; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Mendy; Casemiro, Kroos, Valverde; Isco; Bale, Benzema
Raheem Sterling has made the trip to the Spanish capital after missing City’s recent games against West Ham and Leicester.
Aymeric Laporte hobbled off during the win at the King Power Stadium but has also made the trip after Pep Guardiola played down the severity of the knock.
Manchester City possible XI: Ederson; Walker, Fernandinho, Laporte, Mendy; De Bruyne, Rodri, Silva; Mahrez, Aguero, Bernardo

A Remarkable Achievement
In life , we encountered events that made up our individual lives as humankind generally. An events that thought us two things , either to become a better person or not . Life is full of challenges and blessings as well .Challenges that test how strong, brave and independent person we are.
Way back October 23,2015 at Valencia , Bukidnon. The sun was up, the wind was cold. Everyone was busy preparing their selves for an event ,the Regional School Press Conference (RSPC). I was in fifth grade that time and a student from Sagay Central School ,Camiguin Province. I was part of a Journalism Organization and was chosen to be the News Writer and a member of Radio Broadcasting group. It was not my first time joining such competitions or events and as a matter of fact I had presented our school many times in different kinds of competitions not only in academic but also in dancing and singing. But that event was different and I don't know why I felt uncomfortable that time especially when it was announced that all schools around Region 10 will participate .
It was a very fine morning and I was left alone in our room so I decided to leave our room by myself and went to the area where the event was held. As I walked alone I had observed a lot of different things and people around me. I observed and saw that the other participants from others schools were very professionals and smart ,it is because they're seem to be very relaxed and smart that made me feel more nervous and scared but I put in my mind that I need to be optimistic and instead of letting my fear kill me ,I must use it as my strength, purpose and reason to strive more ,so I immediately return to our room and review my books.
Then ,afternoon came and the event has started . I and the other participants went to our specific areas together with our coaches .We started the competition with a prayer and after that I immediately went to my chair and start writing. It was one of toughest level of competition in my life but I faced the competition with a lot of courage and luckily , our topic for the news writing competition was the topic I had been studying before the competition start so it was an advantage for me as I start writing my news. One hour after it started ,I am already done with my works and the competition has ended. So, I had to transfer to the other room where the radio broadcasting competition was held . During the competition ,the environment suddenly changed . I and my team was more challenged and destructed because it was announced that there were changes about the rules in the said competition . Laptops was not allowed anymore that time that made it difficult for us to perform because all of our musics was there but still the show must go on ,we continue what we were doing and in God's grace we were able to performed well and finished the competition.
It was already late in the afternoon and all the competitions were done , all of the participants were back to each places again for the preparation for awarding. After one hour of preparation, the participants and coaches immediately return to the venue where the awarding was about to start. I was very excited about the result, not that I I will be first or the winner in the competition but because I know I did a great job . I was awarded as sixth placer in the news writing competition but was failed in radio broadcasting competition . Though we faced the competition and failed to achieve the rank we aspired to get, still we were very blessed and happy when we were announced as the Overall Champion .Tears started to fall and laughter was heard all over the venue were I can see everyone was happy and thankful for such a wonderful experienced and opportunity .There was no bound for my happiness and I am very happy and proud for myself at that moment because that success did'nt come so easily for me but took a lot of my time for preparations and also because I am lucky that out of more that forty participants from different schools who would have thought that I had made it to the sixth place.
The event has ended but the surroundings was still noisy where you can hear a lot of people talking about the results. I together with my co-participants from our school and coaches celebrated our victory straightaway. We had a dinner together and the very best part of our dinner was when there's a roast pig placed in our tables .I really enjoyed that night of my victory ,our victory where I understood and realized the way of life that success is not just about working hard but having a strategy planned correctly and intelligently combined with discipline.

DISCOTEC(h)TURE
Ivan lopez Munuera, in the book Night Fever defines the term Discotecture as
“a continuous performance and a collection of assemblages that render visible the construction of bodies technologies, media, and environmental ideas. In the interaction between designers and citizens, DJs and dancers, technologies and regulations, architecture plays a fundamental role”.(Kries et al., 2018, 119)
The idea of an architectural device where space, sound and lighting were unified has been approached in diverse ways, most of them linked directly with the social situation of the moment. Dance spaces from Italian Design, Ibiza Hedonist Villas, German war bunkers, Warehouse in Manchester and Detroit, to Archigram’s Palm Tree Casino and OMA’s proposal for the new space for Ministry of Sound in London are good examples.
Many “Innovative spaces devoted to the ‘performative turn’ in arts and music were spread throughout Italy in the late 1960s”.(ibid) The Piper was the first club that pushed the contemporary visions of music venues. At the final moments the of the Franco regime in Spain, Bocaccio inaugurated in Barcelona in 19679 envisioning a place of sensory exaltation. Boccacio´s owner, Oriol Regás, together with the architect Vincenzo Carmenatti (involved in the design of The Piper) and with a society that was gestating 'el destape'10, built Maddox in Platja D`Aro. A new kind of architectural open space was built, devoted to social dancing. Pol Esteve, a Catalan architect involved in the research on changes in the conception of space in relationship with the technologies of dance culture, describes that:
"Six loudspeakers suspended above the dance floor and twelve complementary columns of loudspeakers distributed around the space, subwoofers, vinyl and magnetic tape, stroboscopic lights, Uv and laser were in charge to make a social dancing group resonate deeply with electronic beats that arrived from New York and London".11 (Kries et al., 2018, 139)
Mescaline, LSD, and amphetamines had a powerful influence on the conception of the experience at Maddox. Amphetamines were legal at that moment in Spain, and grew in popularity. In words of Pol Steve, this was “due to an interest in the cultural and philosophical implications of their consumption”.(Kries et al., 2018, 141)12
These elements resonated and remixed in very diverse ways, within different social scenarios. These spaces, or better said, this kind of immersive social and transformative experience, started to proliferate all over the world, appropriating very diverse settings. This was accompanied by a vast transformation of electronic music styles that are still coining the sound, graphics and fashion13 of club culture in different cities and countries around the world. 14
I want to add some details I found while researching the diversity of Club places and settings.David Mancuso hosted his well known “Loft parties” in New York at the beginning of 1970’s in a space called ”The Loft”, because the place was an old factory building, convenient because in those days these spaces were not heavily regulated. With his audiophile sound system, a policy of no mirrors and no photographs, and objects spread around the space to encourage the found object party game, he wanted to “encourage dancers to overcome self-conscious inhibitions” (Kries et al., 2018, 91). David Mancuso was an experimenter of party settings for ‘sociosonic’15 change. He shared this vision with the explorations cited in the book “Psychedelic Experience”, by the psychologist, Timothy Leary16.
I noticed that the current idea of the frontal raised DJ stage (in electronic music clubs), may respond to a technical necessity and inheritance from the rock music concert stage, where the DJ and the crowd interact on different levels and often in a frontal configuration. I found it interesting that in some clubs, there is an underground DJ booth, as it is in the Hacienda Club in Manchester.17
This kind of decision was made in order to maintain the mixing vibe of the DJ, and to liberate visual hierarchies, collaborating with the flow of the energy.
Personally, I feel more connected with this nonhierarchical stage placement. The idea of wholeness responds better to the interactions of the fluxes involved in dance music. I think that the presence of the DJ should remain invisible or discretely located in the space. That’s why the design of this ‘Spacial Mixer’ is intended to make a disruption of this frontal configuration.

10 “Cine De Destape.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, 30 Jan. 2019, es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cine_de_destape
11 This was a preceding stage for the further “Ruta del Bacalao” installed between Valencia and Barcelona in 1980’s. In which “el bacalao” or “el bacalao fresco” where those vinyls arrived from London. The sound of Valencia had internation recognition. This was the preceding moment of “musica Maquina o Makina” of the mid-1990s.

12 Pol Esteve in (Kries et al., 2018, 141)
13 I’m saying this because over time some aesthetics are linked straight to a genre of electronic music, like Berlin Techno’s use of “Black” as an example.
14 From Tresor Club, that was opened in 1991 in the bank vault of the Wertheim department store in a segregated Berlin, to Detroit with Underground Resistance playing in abandoned car factories he contemporary techno imaginary emerged. For example, a gay style heritage from Disco with Grace Jones, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol at Studio 54, Electric Circus and The Loft parties in New York shaped the sound and style of house music. Rumanian influences in microhouse at Robert Johnson in Frankfurt and Panorama Bar in Berlin, or acid house, The Hacienda club, and dub influences in drum and bass, and jungle the in UK are other specific examples

An open letter to Reedpop in regards to SWCO
#reepop #lucasfilm #disney
ReedPop,
You have given a black eye to Lucasfilm, Disney, Orlando, Star Wars Celebration and Orange County.
I personally experienced this at Star Wars Celebration Orlando. I waited in lines over night on Wednesday and Thursday. I was not able to get into the live stage for either of those panels on Thursday and Friday, 40th Anniversary and The Last Jedi Panel.
On Thursday morning I waited in line 3 hours to get back into the building after returning my folding chair back to my vehicle at the back of the convention center. This was unnecessary. I have gone to many events at this venue over the last 20 years and I have never seen anything as foolish as what was done that Thursday morning. It didn’t have to be that way. I am not sure if someone actually got hurt or if the social media outrage caused it, but it was fixed the next day.
Reedpop did similar for Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim in 2015, though on a smaller more trivial scale. I complained then too as I was in attendance there. When the convention starts for the day the attendees should be allowed in the building. I remember being corralled outside the Anaheim convention center after the con opened back in 2015. Reedpop should have learned then.
What they did with that 3 hour line that was at a mile long was dangerous. It was outside in the hot Florida sun (luckily the weather had been mild. If it had been a hot day I imagine many would have been injured), There were no bathrooms outside, no portable toilets. People were waiting in the night time as well, in dark areas next to forested areas. The situation was harmful to fans. We came to the event to have fun but to have it mismanaged to a dangerous level is unacceptable. The lack of regard for our safety and welfare was unacceptable.
The Orange County Deputies I talked with at event knew this was wrong. I would think that the convention center staff would know that lining people OUTSIDE THE BUILDING was a bad idea. The people I talked to seemed to think that the people running the show were responsible.
The shame of it is that it seems that the size and capacity of the Orange County Convention center was wasted. The main stage, the Galaxy Stage that was in the Valencia ball room seemed to be configured for roughly half of what it could fill. It should be able to seat 6000 people. Failing that the exhibition floor could be configured to hold tens of thousands of seats.
This waste of the venue’s space was value lost for us the attendees. People come from all over the world, use vacation time, pay for hotels and travel and have to SLEEP ON THE FLOOR to get into a panel? The panels should be available to all or most or at least to more than 1/10th of the attendees. I spent the night on Wednesday and Thursday and did not get into either live stage panel. The 3 hour line on Thursday negated my access band for the celebration stage. I barely got into the celebration stage on Friday morning. Tens of thousands of other attendees didn’t even have a chance to enjoy these. That is not right.
What seemed to cause a lot of the line issues was the added security. That first day Reedpop funneled all of us through one entrance and metal detectors. Unfortunately a lot of the time it was security theater. They didn’t really check bags at some points and waved us through, presumably because the lines were too long.
Another chronic issue was that no one checked badges. At least not often. My badge was scrutinized perhaps one time out of 50. Which brings up another issue. The 4 day passes sold out months ago. I was purchased 4 one day passes. It was much more expensive. Why would sell out of 4 day passes when you could not possibly sell out the OCCC? With all the passes pre-sold Reedpop had to have an idea of how large the crowds would be and should have adjusted. As it was the presence of Reedpop staff was not felt. In the overnight lines they disappeared and when the lines began to move in the morning there was chaos because there was not continuity of service. They didn’t know what direction the lines went.
Other issues: The vendor area seemed light. There seemed to be very few mom and pop stores. You would think there would be more light saber vendors. The floor seemed empty.
I didn’t even try the official store. The lines there seemed unreasonable and nightmarish. At Star Wars Celebration 5 the official store was open until late in the evening(11pm , if I remember correctly) and the first few days I hardly seemed to notice any problems there.
I still had a great time despite Redpop’s failures. It was a struggle to get out of the frustration of that first day and get back into fun mode, but I did.

Olympic Hockey: GREAT BRITAIN, GERMANY, NEW ZEALAND, AND IRELAND SECURE FINAL OLYMPIC BERTHS
The 12 teams for each hockey competition at Tokyo 2020 have been decided after thrilling qualifiers over the past 10 days. Olympic followers from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympics Hockey followers can book Olympic Hockey Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
Ireland's women claimed the final berth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic hockey tournament, beating Canada 4-3 in a shootout to reach the Games for the first time. After 120 minutes of scoreless hockey, Canada took what looked like a decisive 3-1 lead in the shootout.
But Beth Barr and Chloe Watkins scored to take it into sudden death as Canada missed with their last two efforts. Both gold medal-winning teams from Rio 2016, Great Britain's women and Argentina's men will be in Tokyo to defend their titles.
Britain make the home advantage count
Great Britain's women are safely through after a 5-1 aggregate win over Chile in London. Playing at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, a training venue for the London 2012 Games, Mark Hager's side did the hard work with a 3-0 win in Saturday's first leg.
Not even a pep talks from Argentinian football manager Marcelo Bielsa, a friend of Chile coach Sergio Vigil, could revive Las Diablos' hopes.
Goals from Tess Howard and Laura Unworthy in the first quarter all but sealed the tie with Fernanda Villagran scoring a late consolation. Forsyth's opener in the ninth minute took him to 100 international goals for Scotland and GB combined.
Germans cruise through in Monchengladbach
Italy's women were in with a chance of qualification having trailed Germany just 2-0 after Saturday's first leg. But their hopes were quickly extinguished as three goals in the first eight minutes’ courtesy of Cecile Pieper, Nike Lorenz and Lena Michele put the tie beyond doubt.
The visitors managed to survive without conceding until half-time, but Germany upped the tempo again after the break.
Black Sticks ease past Korea
New Zealand's men had some work to do in their second leg against Korea in Stratford, leading 3-2 after Match One. And they extended their lead at the start of the second quarter through Stephen Jennens who scored twice on Saturday.
Sam Lane made it a three-goal cushion in the 23rd minute and Kane Russell's penalty corner strike late in the third period made it 6-2 on aggregate. The win sees the Black Sticks through to their 13th Olympic competition and they're fifth in succession.
India at the double for Tokyo
India will go for gold in both competitions in Tokyo, although there were some heart-stopping moments for the women in Bhubaneswar. Leading 5-1 from the first leg, Snored Marine’s side looked to have plenty in hand against the United States.
The Americans started with intent and Amanda Magadan's penalty corner and Kathleen Starkey's strike saw them close to within two in the first quarter. And they were level before half-time thanks to Alyssa Parker's high shot and Magadan's second of the game.
But three minutes into the final quarter, captain Rani Ram pal’s fierce strike beat Kelsey Bing and India held out for a 6-5 aggregate victory. Akas deep Singh and Rapider Singh both scored twice as the eight-time Olympic gold medalists cruised through to Tokyo Olympic.
Canada's men break Irish hearts
Canada's men will be at back-to-back Olympic Games for the first time since the 1980s after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Ireland in Vancouver. The Irish led 5-3 after the first leg and John McKee made it 6-3 on aggregate in the first quarter.
But back came the home side with Gordon Johnston's penalty corner and Oliver Schofield's strike either side of half-time bringing them to within one. They were still behind in the dying seconds and called for a review just before the final whistle sounded for a possible infringement inside the Ireland circle.
A penalty stroke was awarded, and captain Scott Tupper scored to level the tie at 6-6 and send it into a penalty shootout. Ireland went 3-1 up in the shootout but goalie David Carter hauled Canada back into it and Adam Froese scored in sudden death to win it 4-3 and book a place in Tokyo.
Dutch end Pakistan's dream of Olympic return
A clinical performance in Amsterdam saw The Netherlands end the Pakistan men's team's hopes of returning to the Olympics for the first time since Barcelona 1992.
After Match One ended 4-4, the Dutch took the lead through Bjorn Kellerman's backhand strike in the first quarter. But the second period proved decisive as Mink van der Weerden's penalty stroke, Mirco Pruijser's low fizzer, and van der Weerden again - this time from a penalty corner - saw the home side canter to victory.
Terrance Pieters and Jip Janssen added insult to injury for Pakistan who did manage a late consolation through Rizwan Ali, but it was the Dutch who won 6-1 on the night and 10-5 on aggregate. And perhaps we will see more celebrations from Dutch coach Max Caldas on the touchline in Tokyo.
Double delight for Spain
Spain's qualification was twice as nice as both the men and women came through to secure their spot at the Olympics.
The women's team defeated Korea 2-1 in Game 1 in Valencia taking the slenderest of leads with them into Game 2, where they finished the job with a 2-0 victory. A 4-1 aggregate win that has Spain's women looking forward to a summer of hockey on the Olympic stage.
Spain's men foil France
Spain's men will also be investing in the Japanese phrasebooks after their narrow victory over France. Things started badly for the home side in Valencia as they went 3-0 down in the first leg before coming back to draw 3-3.
A stunning solo effort from Gaspard Baumgartner saw France take an early lead but the Spanish stuck at it with Quico Cortes excelling in goal. Captain Miguel Deals equalized from a penalty corner in the second quarter and Spain took the lead just before half-time through Alvaro Iglesias after superb work from Pau Quemada.
Francois Goyet leveled midway through the third period but Xavi Lleonart's penalty stroke restored the hosts' advantage and they held on for a 3-2 win to go through 6-5 on aggregate. This will be Spain's 18th appearance at the Olympic Games with three silvers and a bronze medal to show for their efforts.
Australia roll Russia
Three-time women's Olympic champions Australia will join the men's side in Tokyo Olympic Games after a commanding 8-2 aggregate victory over Russia.
The door was left slightly ajar after the first game finished 4-2, but firmly shut in the second after Australia turned it on to win 5-0. A hat-trick from Emily Chalke in Game 2 means she'll play at her third straight Olympics in Japan.
China stun Belgium in Wujin
After a 2-0 win in the first leg in Wujin, Belgium's women looked to have all but sewn up a place in Tokyo as they and China played out three scoreless periods in the second match. But with just four minutes to go, Gu Bingfeng scored with a penalty stroke.
Moments later, two-time Olympian Liang Meiyu made it 2-2 to set up a penalty shootout. The Belgians were stunned, and China took the shootout 2-1 to the delight of the local fans chanting “加油!” (you!) - 'Let's go!' In Chinese. The tears flowed among the visitors as they watched the home team celebrate a dramatic comeback which will see them play at Tokyo 2020.

SKY LANTERN FESTIVAL, Taiwan
SCHEDULED TO HAPPEN ON 2ND OF MARCH 2018 IN PINGXI, TAIWAN
Sky Lantern Festival , Pingxi Taiwan
The Lantern Festival of Taiwan is a 2000 year old culture celebrated in the reign of Xing Dynasty at that time. At that time, bands of outlaws frequently raided the lowland villages, forcing residents to seek refuge in the mountains. Village watchmen used "fire balloons" as signals to inform the residents that their houses were safe once again and when those hiding in the hills saw the celestial flares, they knew it was time to go home. Today these lanterns have two main purposes. One: they display scribbled messages of the hopes and dreams of the purchaser who then release them into the night sky by the power of fire; and Two: they represent the end of the Chinese New Year period and their release symbolizes the shedding of outdated ways and embracing the future.

This is a time when St Petersburg is at its most lustrous, when zhizni radost – the peculiarly Russian brand of joie de vivre – is irresistible. White Nights revelling starts in May, when the city finally succumbs to spring and the parks are filled with flowering trees, but mid-June is peak time, as the sun slumps lazily towards the horizon but never fully sets. Here are some White Nights (and summer day) experiences not to miss in St Petersburg. This is it, the high point of all the White Nights revelry. The Scarlet Sails event in late June is the biggest annual public gathering in Russia (over a million people attend). There's a mock pirate battle on the Neva River, then a firework extravaganza, culminating in the appearance of a tall ship with blood-red sails. The imagery originates from a popular Russian children's book, but the Scarlet Sails have become the consummate symbol of White Nights, and perhaps the most special moment of a St Petersburg summer.

Here Are the Top Reasons Why Living in the Countryside Is a Good Idea
Life has become much easier and more convenient with the advent of technology and modernization. However, we cannot also deny the fact that it has some ill effects to our environment.
For instance, the increasing need for the production of metals, plastic, oil, rubber, and the like contributes a lot to both air and water pollution. In addition, industrialization and even overpopulation can produce excessive noise, which is no longer tolerable as it becomes destructive, thus contributing to problems concerning noise pollution.
We oftentimes experience all these when we live in big cities. These are a few of the many reasons why some people do not prefer living in urban areas, instead, they build their homes in the countryside where they can relax, breathe in fresh air, and enjoy life even more.
To further emphasize this point, here are top 3 reasons why many people choose to live in the countryside:
Simplicity and Camaraderie
Life away from the city is much simpler, less demanding, and less stressful. As you might have noticed if you have ever been to the countryside, there are no high-end malls or fancy restaurants where the “who’s who” in the area are expected to go. Fashion is also limited to what is proper and just appropriate for the occasion.
Most importantly, people are friendly and respectful. In addition, due to the comparably smaller population, everyone tends to know each other, thus giving more room for establishing good relationships.
Lower Cost of Living
This is one of the great benefits that you’ll enjoy when choosing to live in a rural area. As mentioned earlier, life is simple, hence people do not need to spend much for their daily needs. One good example is the cost of electricity; you don’t need to have your air-conditioned units turned on 24 hours a day as the area is much cooler compared to the city. This means big savings on your part.
Fresh Air and Fresh Food
There are no big business establishments and factories in the area, so you can enjoy fresh air when you live far from big cities. This is highly beneficial to maintaining your good health. Plus, the fact that freshly harvested or freshly caught food is abundant in the countryside, you’ll also have the privilege of taking in fresh products such as fruits, vegetables, and even meat.
Quiet and Peaceful
Since there are no venues for people to hang out or party 24/7, you can expect that before the clock strikes at 12 midnight or even earlier, people are already sleeping soundly in their homes. This would mean that you can enjoy the serenity of the place, and sleep well too.
It is also rare to see drunk men going around the area late at night, and there are fewer incidences of crime. In fact, the crime rate in the countryside is much lower compared to those of big cities.
In the Philippines, you can find many potential areas in the provinces where you can build your home and have a great life with your family. A good example would be Valencia City in the province of Bukidnon.
Although it is called a city, it is still very much a beautiful countryside location that boasts of its progressive economic life as well as its lovely homes. One of its pride is a high-end housing subdivision named Valencia Estates.
Valencia Estates is the ideal place for you and your family as it offers a lot area that ranges from 150 to 450 sqm. with excellent amenities. Since it is a guarded gated subdivision, you are assured of safety and security around the clock.
What is best about it is, its owner and developer A Brown Company is a reputable provider of top quality Cagayan de Oro real estate. If you want to see more of their housing offers, you can visit their website at http://www.abrown.ph/real-estate/.

After being unable to go back to sleep on this early Sunday morning, I started to peruse through the internet and eventually ended up at The Players Tribune. After reading about The Miami Baseball Brotherhood, I continued to scroll down and curiosity grabbed me as to what careers may be offered at the editorial. As I went through the available openings and requirements, one hit me in particular for interns: What is the most incredible sports moment you've ever personally witnessed?
Now, I watch and follow a plethora of sports, and have traveled far and wide to watch teams that are not even my favorite. I am not quite the Marlins guy that sits courtside and behind home plate at the largest sporting events (or anywhere close to that for that matter), but I am definitely fortunate to witness some pretty great moments. Although I do not remember every detail of each event, here are the moments that will forever live with me.
My first and final time at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, CA (2013)
Being a 49ers fan all my life, this was my first time watching them in person. After securing my first professional job, I was looking forward to making use of my new fortunes and doing my first football game right by tailgating. After years of suffering, the promise lands looked to be on the horizon with Harbaugh at the helm. Before they tore down Candlestick, I wanted my first game to be in the stadium that witnessed all the other past glory that made history within this venue. The Niners were hosting the Texans on Sunday Night, the stage was set. As a niners fan, the result did not disappoint as the tone for the game was set with a 49ers pick-six and Frank and Vernon would both eventually score to seal a 34-3 victory and I got to see my man Patrick Willis and the rest of the defense round up the Texans. One thing I never knew until I was there in person was that fans would cheer "a'oo a'oo a'oo" like in the movie 300 after each first down, which was pretty interesting.
Wrigley Field (2015)
What better rivalry than the Cardinals and Cubs in Wrigley. This was my first sporting event outside of California. After walking through the turnstyles, I started getting chills (and not from the Chicago winds either) in disbelief that I was in the exact stadium where many other fans walked through for the past 100 years. Sitting in the second tier of the grandstands behind home plate of Wrigley, we had a magnificent view of everything in front of us. This was unlike watching sports in California - people were living and dying with every pitch, the entire crowd stood and cheered when the rallying cry came. In California, baseball is a past time for some, but in Wrigley, baseball is a religion for all.
Fenway Park (2016)
When I was younger, the Red Sox were my American League team. I still remember watching them win the World Series to break the curse, the heart break that was the year before, the other World Series that followed after, and through all of it there was Big Papi. When better to attend Fenway than the final season for David Ortiz. The Royals were in town, David Price was on the mound against Danny Duffy, it looked like we were going to have a pitching duel. As we would find out on this mild late Summer night, we were instead going to have ourselves a slugfest. Unfortunately, I did not get to see Ortiz go yard (on the plane ride back, they were showing Red Sox-Royals on Sunday night baseball and just so happens I tuned in when Ortiz goes yard and a lady few rows back cheers "Go Papi!" - New England women are die hard like that), Mooky, Xander, Hanley, and Salvy (2) all went yard that night, and I got to see a number of guys I respected who play the game.
Messi score his 500th career goal as Barcelona loss 2-1 to Valencia (2016).
Being a Real Madrid fan, it is a little awkward to say that my first European soccer fixture would be watching Barcelona at Camp Nou. As a soccer fan and visiting Barcelona for the time, there was no chance I was going to pass the opportunity to watch Iniesta, Suarez, Neymar, and Messi. Barcelona had just recently been eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and going through a bit of a rough patch. They got caught on the counter attack numerous times, going two goals down and the trouble looked to persist. A part of me was pleased, but at the same time I felt for the Barcelona supporters. After giving up each goal, the supporters tried to rally their team. Messi would eventually pull one back, and Pique had a glorious chance towards the waning seconds. Even though he missed, the crowd applauded the effort and stood behind their team like a parent behind their child through thick and thin. That night, I understood what it meant to be Catalan.
Hala Madrid (2016)
When European club soccer was not widely known yet in the States, I began to jump on the Real Madrid bandwagon when the likes of Roberto Carlos, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Raul, and Ronaldo were the stars of the initial Galaticos era in the Spanish capital and playing FIFA was becoming popular. More than 10 years in the making, I finally had my chance to watch the likes of Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Modric, Benzema, and Cristiano in the second era of the Galaticos. To go from watching on screen to being there in person at the Santiago Bernabeu leaves you speechless at the magnitude of the stage that these guys play in on weekly basis. Here they were going up against Villareal, a team I've watched Real Madrid play many times. Lucas Vasquez would play a beautiful 1-2 to start off the scoring, and they were off. It is a moment I never wanted to end, but I will never forget the brightly lit field, and the chants and drums coming from the south end of the stadium.
Atletico Madrid vs Malaga (2016)
As amazing as it was to see both Barcelona and Real Madrid, I have to say there is a soft spot for Atletico. As reflected in their coach, Diego Simeone, and their supporters, the have a very blue collar attitude and work ethic about them. Though being the smallest of the three Spanish stadiums on this voyage, it was also the loudest - this was an open stadium too as compared to the other two that are enclosed with an open top. This would be the game Diego Simeone gets sent off for rolling a ball onto the pitch (from my viewpoint at the time from the far side of the stadium it looked he did, but apparently he may have directed the ball boy to do so) during a counter attack by Malaga. The Atletico supporters would curse between each drag of the cigarette throughout the closely fought match. I got to see Diego Godin, Griezmann, and of course, El Nino - Fernando Torres - the kid who grew up going to games with his grandfather was now back with his childhood club after his spell in England.
After a moments thought, this was the first and foremost my greatest moment (to date) - Game 5 of the NLCS between the Cardinals and Giants (2014).
Up to this point I have been to a number of Giants game but never a playoff game, not even in their previous playoff runs. Looking at the schedule against the mighty Cardinals, game 5 looked like my best bet to witness a series clincher and to my luck, it was. With an $85 standing room only ticket, I left work early for San Francisco and was also my first time attending a sporting event by myself. Sports are one of my greatest passions, and once I made up mind to be at this game, there was no stopping me. At first I started out on top of the arcade, but after not being able to see a couple of the plays that went towards the gap in right center, I eventually found my way next to the concessions mid-game looking down third base line, and man, did it provide the perfect viewpoint for what was to come. Being injured for much of the playoffs, Michael Morse was called on to pinch hit late in the game. The Giants were down a run and if anyone was going to tie it up with a homerun, he was the guy. Low and behold, the stars were aligned. After the ball left the bat, I ducked down to track the ball as it disappeared from view because of the club level above, praying that the ball was deep enough and stayed fair, the ball would travel over the fence and squeezed within the foul pole in the left field corner and the crowd erupted. Wow. This felt storybook. Next inning, the Giants got a couple runners on base and Ishikawa steps into the box. After hearing the ball leave the bat, I knew he would hit it deep enough to score the run, but he went one better and drove it into the seats for a walk off homerun. The guy who got resigned mid season to a minor league deal and makes it on the playoff roster hits game winning homerun to win the pennant. It could not have happened to a better guy.
So, what else is on the list? As a Lakers fan, I have not been to Staples, and as some of you know, I was hoping to see Kobe in his final season, but fate would not permit it. As an Arsenal fan, I would love to see Wenger and Ozil, but with the current season, the futures of both look to be hazy. English football in general is definitely on the list. The Allianz would also be great to see Bayern Munich. We'll see what else is in store, there will be more games to come.
On a side note, there is also now an Instagram account that hopefully will be updated more frequently than this blog (or hopefully both will get updated altogether). Check it out @discoveringmylegend

Tasty Tuesday: Harvest Grille and Bistro
Hello lovebirds! Today, we’re taking a look at the Harvest Grille and Bistro, located inside the Hillsborough Street Doubletree hotel.
As it turns out, most people don’t seem to be aware that there is a restaurant inside the Doubletree, but apparently, there’s two. The hotel boasts a venue for breakfasts, and another for lunch and dinner. I went to the latter and found myself greeted by Cally Valencia, the Director of food and beverage, and Erica, a member of the waitstaff, who I sat down with and spoke with about the place.
The Doubletree is offering a special deal on rooms this Valentine’s day with their Romance Package. If you book a room with them for you and your sweetheart, you’ll get complimentary chocolate-covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne, and you’ll have an option for a late checkout in case you have a long night.
The location itself has been there for about 50 years, though it’s been a Doubletree for only about five. Before that, it was a Brownstone hotel, and back in the 70s, the basement was a nightclub. Today, it’s a very modern, comfy space that really has aged well. The nightclub basement has even been converted into banquet space that can fit about 500 people between their two halls.
The interior itself is very modern and chic, as expected from the Hilton brand. The restaurant has a small bar, flanked with TVs, a small water feature, and plenty of space to cuddle up with your sweetie-pie while you enjoy a romantic meal together.
As for the restaurant, I decided to ask Erica about what she thinks is unique about their location. “Our staff is friendlier.” She said, “We treat our guests like family.” And in my experience that’s definitely true! Both Cally and Erica were very open and honest with me during my visit, and made sure that all my questions were answered, especially about what the food was like.
The menu is small, but offers a lot of up-classed hotel faire. Burgers, salads and soups, and even pizza. I asked Erica what she eats here, and she said she loves their pizza and steaks, and can even recommend their salads, despite not being much of a salad person herself. She suggested to me one of their best sellers, the steak and bleu cheese spinach salad.
I took her up on her offer, and I wasn’t disappointed. The plate had a pile of fresh, vibrant spinach topped with crumbled bleu cheese, perfectly cooked-to-order steak, and two golden, freshly-fried onion rings perched on top. The edge of the plate had decoratively-cut hard boiled eggs and grilled cherry tomatoes arranged around the outside. It was a feast for the eyes, and a feast for my stomach too!
I was really thrilled with the meal. It was delicious, and that was made all the better by the friendliness of the staff, and the comfy chairs and quiet interior. It’s a slightly hidden gem on Hillsborough street, tucked away waiting for you and your darling to discover it this Valentine’s Day.
