What's your skincare routine currently?
I actually spent the other week taking stock of how my current routine was working and deciding if I needed to change anything, so I have a lot to say on this
AM:
Wash face with water
(extra step for wintertime) Avène thermal water
Serum with antioxidants and niacinamide: just switched from facetheory Colloidal-C Anti-Redness Toner, which I got in hope of reducing redness (did nothing for me) back to facetheory’s Cera-C Pore Reducing Toner, which actually makes my skin look great. It has 5% niacinamide and a vitamin C derivative, which is what I want – I just would like extra perks (anti-redness). An alternative I’m considering is the Isntree Onion Newpair Gel cream.
(extra step if my skin is feeling very dry i.e. what I use during winter) hydrating serum: I’ve just finished Avène Hydrance Serum which I found very hydrating though too light weight (i.e. not good for winter for me) and honestly it lasted so little that I won’t buy it again. My go to instead is snail mucin: Mizon’s Snail Repair Ampoule (best formula but not so much product, what I’m currently using); or COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Essence (best bang for your buck, though my pump was really bad)
Alpha-arbutin: most recent addition to my skincare & it seems to be making a difference when it comes to discoloration (PIE). I’m using Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum, mostly because this was the only product I could find here in Norway.
Caffeine for my undereye: I’m using The Inkey List Caffeine Eye Cream – while I can say it’s infinitely better than what The Ordinary offers (because why would you use a dropped for something that goes around the eyes!!), I can’t tell if I’m seeing results or not, despite using it for almost three months. Maybe?
Moisturizer: Eucerin 5% Urea Repair, my holy grail of all time. I buy this by the litre. Since I entered my mid-20s, my skin has turned dry. Combined with drier winters and the heating I have to put on to survive winter, this is the only thing that makes my skin stay intact.
Sunscreen: probably controversial, but I actually don’t wear sunscreen everyday, as the amount of light I get is ridiculous (though I do in the summer or if there is snow). Over the past year, I tried several ones and my top two choices are Beauty of Joseon Sun Relief (cannot fault a single thing and I found it to be good value for money based on how long it lasted me) and Isntree Onion Newpair Sunscreen (jury is out on whether the onion extract actually helps me, but I found the texture to be perfect for me and it actually ensures I apply a proper amount since it’s not too runny)
Dr.Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment: amazing!! This has been so far the only thing that helped with redness. I haven’t worn foundation in a year and it’s only because of this. I don’t even think it’s that expensive because I spent 30£ for a 50 ml jar which lasts me six months of daily use. Love it.
PM:
My routine is the following:
Double cleanse: I’ve been liking a lot the Beauty of Jonseon Cleansing Balm – so far the best cleansing product I’ve tried. Micellar water is a no for me, as I don’t like using cotton pads. Oils are mostly ok as an alternative, with iUnik Calendula Complete Cleansing Oil being my failsafe (but it doesn’t remove 100% of my mascara).   Next, I use a foaming cleansing gel. My go-to used to be Neutrogena Clear & Defend, but it keeps being sold out, so I’m now using  CeraVe Blemish Control Cleanser. It works fine. My main criteria here is price tbh.
facetheory Exaglow serum: the daily base, with tranexamic acid, liquorice root, and a vitamin c derivative, this in combination with whatever active follows has helped me reduce my hyperpigmentation so so much
An active (see below)
Moisturizer: Eucerin Urea repair, again.
Actives is when things get more complicated, because I rotate weekly between (combinations of) them
Differin (adapalene): game changer, I tolerate it very well and I recently increased it to three times per week  + Azelaic acid: I love it and over the years I tried so many different products (available in Europe). I find that for me 10% works just as well as 20%. Usually, a higher price tag gets you better texture (i.e. less grainy) but not better results. Isispharma Metroruboril was very smooth, but a more basic one works just fine for me – hence why I keep going back to The Ordinary’s 10% one. It’s not an area where I feel like I should be spending a lot.
Kojic acid: I’m using Dermaceutic’s Radiance, which works fine in combination with my overall routine. + Retinol: bit of a controversial combination, but because I’ve been using retinols for so long, this works fine. I’m using A313, which is v gentle. I bought it in Paris and it has a too thick texture in my opinion, so once I finished the tube I’ll go back to my fave L’Oreal Revitalift (amazing fragrance, great texture, very hydrating too)
An exfoliant: while some of my products have small percentages of lactic acid in it, so I never felt the need to have a dedicated exfoliating step up. However, I thought I could benefit from it and started using  facetheory’s Glycolacsal which has glycolic acid (8.5%), salicylic acid (1%) and lactic acid (0.5%).  I use it twice a week and it’s really good.
In addition to all of this, twice a week I do a face mask with benoxyl peroxide in the shower which helps tons to keep acne at bay BUT is infinitely better than using the cream, which has bleached all of my towels. The cream used to be a must in my routine but now that overall my acne is under control, I don’t need to use it as often.
This ended up being extremely long, but I love skincare and I feel like I learnt so much about my own skin and how to work with it and what products work in the past few years. I’m testing new things but in a calculated manner. And I don’t know. Skincare is nothing static and the whole process of figuring things out can be fun (and necessary).

👉🏻👈🏻 Can you go into your skin care routine a little bit as in what order you apply things and how long in between applying products (like is it immediately or do you wait 5 mins to let the first stuff dry/sink in before the next product)?
I get so lost with skin care that I get discouraged and then dont so anything.
oh god this is probably gonna be really long but,
so for the pm- Basically with most of the humectant (moisturizing stuff) you wanna apply that as soon as you get out of the shower and in quick succession so that any water and moisture can get absorbed into the skin and not just evaporate. assuming you shower at night like a sane person this should be your first step when you get out of the shower, you can not wipe off your face with your towl to keep your face damp for longer, i usually don't even wait to put on my pj's before i sit infront of my little skincare stack and start to slap stuff on my face.
the first batch is stuff like the cosrx snail mucin, cosrx glactanomicies ferment filtrate and hyaluronic acid (you'll see a lot of people tell you that 'the ordinary' one is bad but tbh it's fine and cheap, but a good option is also the one from good molecules, neither of them are more than 10$).
if you do not shower at night or wait to long and your skin gets dry, then you want to preface all of your skincare with some sort of toner; the lineage cream skin is absolutely amazing- especially if you have redness and inflamed skin- it is a little bit pricey but tbh most toners run in the 15-30 per 60oz range. these can last you up to 6 months. my leniege one was actually a gift from a follower for my last birthday and i've been using it very sparingly. i immediately follow it up with snail mucin, hyaluronic acid, or something light and hydrating, this is the first barrier of skincare that kind of cushions your skin if you plan on using an actives.
You want to sandwich all of the stuff that dries out your skin from acne, takes care of your fine lines and wrinkles, or chemically exfoliates your skin between your serum and cream. now is when you get into the waiting- when you start to apply your actives.
Actives are stuff like retinols/retinoids, aha's or lactic acids, bha's or glycolic acids, salicylic acids, and niacinamide. these are things that can damage your skin if improperly used. for me- aha's feel a little less damaging than glycolic acids. aha's and bha's are generally a once a week thing especially if you're just starting out. niacinamide help with sebum and clogged pores as well as pigmentation issues, salicilic acid is also something that kinda helps keep your skin sterile from acne causing bacteria, if you have sensitive skin introduce these very very slowly, start with niacinamide and work your way up. i apply niacinimide almost every day and everything else as needed.
next you have your eye cream- it can change based on what you want to solve, if you have fat loss around your eye (ie deep set eyebags like mine) you want to use stuff thats going to thicken the skin faster- staying away from stuff that decreases blood flow like caffeine, if you have dark circles- you want stuff that has brightening agents. if you have fine lines- then eye patches (mini eye face masks basically) and a super hydrating undereye cream will help. i tend to lean for the hydrating stuff. because i have dry under eyes, fine lines, and fat loss.
the ones ive tried are the cosrx snail peptide eye cream, the beauty of jeoseon ginsent and retinal eye cream, the mizon snail repair eye cream, the purito green level eye cream, the haru haru wonder cream the inky list retinol and caffine eye creams, the good molecules, yerba mate wake up eye gel, and the milky dress wrinkle and whitening eye cream. the ONLY ONES that i saw ANY difference with are the good molecules, milky dress, and haruharu, but the one from good molecules is adequate under makeup and the best by far and cheapest.
fat loss is one of the main reasons why you want to stay away from things like lash growth serums, there are some that claim to not cause fat loss, but tbh, seeing as the only way to fix it is via invasive cosmetic surgery- i wouldn't risk it. it's not worth it.
Next i go in with a cream. and then acne gel over top and then you're done!
So basically
shower
Toner,
hyaluronic acid/serum/hydrator
wait until skincare has absorbed,
Apply actives if you desire actives to fix issues, wait inbetween each application so that the skincare has time to sit and soak in,
You can apply your eye cream at the same time as these steps, because usually actives should not go around the eye area.
Cream, no need to wait
Acne treatment
hope that helps! i have to start my workout now~~~ good luck!

drop the 2020 skin and hair routine pls
ofc <3
all from the ordinary brand skincare - squalane cleanser, any toner, any serum, eye cream/serum, moisturiser, cold pressed Moroccan argan oil + aus cancer council sunscreen or any spf50+ (which I’ve been using every day this yr anyway bc my family keep dropping dead from melanoma/aussie tings) + the ordinary silicon primer (I don’t use it as makeup primer bc I don’t wear makeup I just use on its own, trust!!) all in that order !! morning and night (or just once if don’t remember)
in reality just cleanser, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen will be more than effective ! but im just tryna look like I did back then lmao
as for hair, I have thick naturally wavy/curlyISH hair so I use shea moisture coconut & hibiscus shampoo and conditioner (the orange bottles), only wash ur hair once a week to not strip it off all its oils, then use shea moisture leave in (either the white or blue bottle) which I just do every night after shower so hair stay soft and then make sure not to dry hair with a towel but instead use a tshirt material and scrunch upwards to dry (or if gonna wrap the Tshirt around hair and leave make sure to not wrap ur hair into the twist bit but instead leave it scrunched all on top if that makes sense) and sometimes when feel necessary add the same argan oil from skincare to ends of hair for moisture and to style when still damp add in a little shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie (the orange one) and keep scrunching dry while retaining as much moisture as can (ofc this is just for wavy/curly hair idk bout others)
Ik this all seems kinda excessive which it kinda is but I’m just replicating what I did back then when I was bored in lockdown and both my skin and hair slayed the hardest they ever have and also I have no hobbies so I have time plus my appearance has been floppin these past few yrs in general (in saying that I’ve not been taking care of myself at all for yrs so that’s probs partly why but also before 2020 I never rlly took care of myself and still kinda slayed but I think that’s just called youth idk) so what’s a gurl to do + it’s good self care time ! I’ve never rlly been a beauty person myself but after experiencing the results back then trust it’s worth it hehe u just gotta be consistent but we will see how long it lasts bc it’s only day 2 lmao I hope this helps <3
OH ALSO my hair should have literally fried off considering how many times it was boxed dyed over the recent years but thankfully it never has all thanks to FINO hair mask !!!!! TSUBAKI hair mask is good also but I prefer the effect of FINO - they are both Japanese hair masks and pretty inexpensive for the results so thank me later

5. My new skincare routine from The Ordinary. It's simple and relatively cheap, but I feel like I'm making time to look after myself.

DIA I GOTTA KNOW
mythical creature you think/believe is real?
do you have a skincare routine (and how many steps is it)?
how’s your spice tolerance?
THANK YOU ELLI
i think most aliens are real, and i still lowkey believe dragons are real. dragons, or something that looks like them, are prevalent in almost every culture!
i do have a skincare routine, it is very long and very extensive bc i have genetically terrible skin, plus i deal with chronic skin-picking lol. so, here we go:
+twice daily i wash my face with a mix of Cerave hydrating cleanser and their foaming cleanser(they've recently made a hydrating foam cleanser, so once i run out im going to try that). i follow up with The Ordinary's niacinimide and one of their vitamin c treatments. then i use COSRx's snail mucin essence, then The Ordinary's caffeine undereye treatment and their hyaluronic acid, and finish with Cerave's hydrating moisturizer. if im going outside during the day, i follow up with Paula's Choice sunscreen.
+once a week i use The Ordinary's BHA + AHA treatment, one of their retinoid treatments, and a clay mask and sheet mask. the clay mask is just powdered bentonite clay that i mix with water or occasionally a bit of honey, and the sheet masks i use are from Tonymoly. i dont do any of these on the same day. typically its monday for the exfoliant, tuesday for the retinoid, wednesday for the clay mask, and thursday for the sheet mask!
+for special occasions, i also have undereye masks from Tonymoly and lip masks from Fourth Ray Beauty!
(like i said, very long and extensive, but my skin sucks and this is the only way to keep it in check lol)
and for the last question, my spice tolerance is just okay. it actually used to be a lot higher when i was younger, but it's gone way down since i hit my 30s :c im very sad about it bc i love spice!!!!

First Impressions: As someone with dry skin, having a hyaluronic acid serum in my skincare drawer is a must. I ran out of my TO hyaluronic acid serum a few weeks (months?) ago and had another hyaluronic acid serum in my wishlist which was inaccessible to purchase to say the least. I knew about this product but something about either the packaging, colours or name of the brand threw me off from trying it.
Discovery: A tiktok impressed me with an ~aesthetic~ usage of this product after which I looked up dermatologists' reviews of this on YouTube (as I usually do before buying skincare, or anything for that matter). With just 11 ingredients, it's perfect to use while on adapalene if you're looking for a gentle serum to use during the day, which was what I had in mind while purchasing it. A morning serum.
Purchase: I was surprised to see it being sold in Shoppers Drugmart so I did a quick search on their website and found that they were selling a value package of the 50ml bottle with 2 additional travel-size products for free. Although there is a 75ml bottle for $10 more, I didn't want to commit to a bigger bottle for something I didn't yet know I would enjoy + the value package seemed like a good deal for beginners to try the brand. I picked up one of the two boxes in stock at the Shoppers near me.
Usage: After I wash my face in the morning, I spray Avene Spring Water all over and then some of that sweet Laneige Toner (which I bought in conjunction with this product in the same week and made a review for here). I let the toner dry and absorb well into my skin before going ahead with another spray of Avene Spring Water to dampen my face and then apply 2 pumps of Vichy Minerals 89. Not only are hyaluronic serums recommended to go on damp skin for moisture retention, it also makes the product easy to spread and absorb on your skin with a buffer like water (pro tip!!). The pump on the bottle has to be the most satisfying pump to use. The bottle has a triangular shape which gives that wine bottle effect where it seems like you've used up a lot of the liquid while it's at the brim or a few inches below it still. But once you get to the wider part of the bottle, the product seems to look like it's exhausting slower. I've been using this product for the last 1 month and it's already half empty so a 50ml bottle would last you about 2 months with generous daily use.
Thoughts: I discovered a hidden gem. This is has been the perfect way of achieving glass skin and gives your skin this dewy, healthy glow. My skin looks plump and hydrated with it on and I've been complimented on it too. It's also helped in combatting redness and dehydrated inflammation, which prior to using this product I had no idea had ties with dryness. My acne does not flare up with this serum on and it makes any marks lighter and texture non-existent.
I don't feel like I need to top it off with a moisturizer to avoid making it greasy (as it's already very hydrating) so I top it off with my La Roche Posay sunscreen which glides on it like butter. My skin feels so smooth and soft with this serum on. This product is so much better than my previous hyaluronic acid. The only downside is that the price is not drug store level even if it is sold in one. It costs me just as much as my toner from Sephora.
Final: I'm very impressed with this product. I have the Avene Hyaluron Activ B3 Concentrated Plumping Serum next in line, since it also has Niacinamide in its Hyaluronic Acid formula, to try after this gets over so I will be replacing this part of my morning routine with it. But the great thing about discovering this product is that I now have a new standard for Hyaluronic Acid above what The Ordinary had to offer. I definitely see myself putting this product in a repurchase cycle and buying the biggest bottle, 75ml, when I do.

Ultimate Guide to Dry Skin Treatment: Achieve Hydrated, Healthy Skin
Tumblr media
Dry skin can be uncomfortable and challenging to manage, but with the right treatment, you can achieve smooth, hydrated, and healthy skin. Whether you're dealing with seasonal dryness or chronic dry skin conditions, this comprehensive guide will help you find the best dry skin treatment for your needs.
Understanding Dry Skin
Dry skin, or xerosis, occurs when your skin lacks sufficient moisture. This can result in rough, flaky, and sometimes itchy patches. Several factors can contribute to dry skin, including:
Weather: Cold, dry air in winter or hot, dry climates can strip your skin of moisture.
Hot Showers: Prolonged exposure to hot water can remove natural oils from your skin.
Harsh Soaps and Detergents: These can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness.
Age: As you age, your skin produces less oil, making it more prone to dryness.
Medical Conditions: Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and hypothyroidism can cause dry skin.
Effective Dry Skin Treatments
1. Hydrating Moisturizers
A good moisturizer is essential for treating dry skin. Look for products that contain hydrating ingredients such as:
Hyaluronic Acid: This powerful humectant draws moisture into the skin.
Glycerin: Helps to attract moisture to your skin's surface.
Ceramides: Restore the skin's natural barrier, preventing moisture loss.
Shea Butter: Provides deep hydration and nourishment.
2. Gentle Cleansing
Choose a gentle, hydrating cleanser that won't strip your skin of its natural oils. Avoid soaps and cleansers with harsh chemicals, fragrances, and alcohol, which can exacerbate dryness.
3. Exfoliation
Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells that can make your skin look dull and feel rough. Use a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week to reveal smoother, more hydrated skin. Look for products with mild exfoliants like lactic acid or fruit enzymes.
4. Humidifiers
Using a humidifier in your home, especially during the winter months, can help add moisture to the air, preventing your skin from drying out.
5. Hydrating Serums
Incorporate a hydrating serum into your skincare routine for an extra boost of moisture. Serums with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and peptides can deeply hydrate and plump your skin.
6. Protective Measures
Protect your skin from harsh weather conditions by wearing appropriate clothing and using a scarf or gloves when necessary. In summer, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
7. Healthy Diet
Your diet plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin. Ensure you're consuming plenty of water and eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins. These nutrients help keep your skin hydrated and support overall skin health.
8. Avoid Hot Showers
Opt for lukewarm water instead of hot showers or baths, as hot water can strip your skin of essential oils. Limit your shower time to 10-15 minutes to prevent further moisture loss.
9. Overnight Treatments
Using overnight masks or heavier moisturizers before bed can help repair and hydrate your skin while you sleep. Look for products with occlusive ingredients like petrolatum, lanolin, or squalane that lock in moisture.
Recommended Dry Skin Treatment Products
Moisturizers
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream: Contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid to restore the skin's barrier and provide long-lasting hydration.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel: A lightweight, gel-based moisturizer with hyaluronic acid for intense hydration.
Cleansers
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser: A mild, non-irritating cleanser that hydrates while it cleanses.
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser: A soothing cleanser that maintains the skin’s moisture barrier.
Serums
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5: A hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 to enhance skin hydration.
Vichy Mineral 89: A daily hydrating serum with 89% Vichy volcanic water and hyaluronic acid.
Exfoliators
Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant: A gentle exfoliator with salicylic acid that removes dead skin cells and hydrates.
Tatcha The Rice Polish: A gentle exfoliating powder that turns into a creamy foam, leaving skin smooth and hydrated.
When to See a Dermatologist
If your dry skin persists despite following these treatments, it may be time to consult a dermatologist. They can provide personalized recommendations and prescribe treatments for underlying conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Signs that you should see a dermatologist include:
Severe Itching: Persistent itching that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter treatments.
Redness and Inflammation: Severe redness, swelling, or signs of infection.
Painful Cracks: Painful cracks or fissures in the skin that bleed or don’t heal.
Managing dry skin can be challenging, but with the right treatments and skincare routine, you can achieve hydrated, healthy skin. Remember to choose gentle, hydrating products and protect your skin from harsh environmental factors. If your dry skin persists, don’t hesitate to seek professional advice from a dermatologist. By following these tips and treatments, you can enjoy smoother, more comfortable skin year-round.
