So Can NASCAR Drivers Turn Right or Not?
So in the past couple of weeks, I've watched a couple of races and a couple of things crossed my timeline that had to do with the following question: just how good are NASCAR drivers at turning right?
I don't mean this in like the Formula One fan newbie kinda way, I mean this as like a legitimate discussion as to the quality of the NASCAR field and the fact that road course ringers have seemingly returned to the series.
So, first things first, Shane van Gisbergen. Love him, New Zealander race car driver that went over to Australia, won three Supercars championships and three Bathurst 1000s. SVG then came over to America last year, won the NASCAR Chicago Street Race to be the first guy to win in his first attempt since 1963, and impressed so much that Trackhouse partnered with Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series to give Shane a full-time campaign in American stock car racing.
Well, last week he won the Pacific Office Automation 147 at Portland International Raceway, and this week he won the Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 at Sonoma. Which brings two things to mind:
One: Gee Xfinity races have some crappy ass names, don't they?
Two: Wow, he went back-to-back on road courses...that is really impressive, but also kinda sad.
Like two weeks in a row now the Xfinity field got beat by a thirty-five-year-old rookie on road courses. This is supposed to be the most road course heavy era of NASCAR, in the past five years the top three NASCAR series have gone to the likes of Mosport, Road America, Mid-Ohio, the Daytona Sports Car Course, the Charlotte Roval, the aforementioned Chicago Street Race, Circuit of the Americas, and NASCAR's traditional road courses in the form of Sonoma and Watkins Glen.
NASCAR drivers turn right a lot, they're not the oval only meme that F1 fans like to present it as, so what is going on?
Well, I think the simplest answer is that Shane van Gisbergen is a damn good race car driver. Supercars have long been compared to NASCARs and that's even truer in the Next Gen era, plus he's gotten a lot of support and advice from Marcos Ambrose, someone who I'll talk about more shortly. Plus, there's also Scott McLaughlin.
SVG and Scotty Mac are quite possibly the two best drivers to ever come out of Supercars, and we've seen Scott be successful in Indycar for a number of years now. Just this last weekend he was competing for the win at Road America with his Penske teammates. So it's not that NASCAR drivers are bad at turning right, it's that they've been unlucky enough to come up against a once in a generation talent.
To support this, there were another two Supercars drivers in Sonoma this past weekend. Cam Waters in the #60 RFK Mustang and Will Brown in the #33 RCR Camaro, and quite frankly, both of them had weekends full of bad luck that didn't amount to much of anything. Will was third in one of the practice sessions, and that's as close as he got to pulling off an SVG-esque performance in the Cup race.
And even in the Xfinity race, Ty Gibbs and Austin Hill both presented very real threats to SVG during the race, before Gibbs got caught up in a wreck and spun around into his own teammate trying to get going again, and Austin Hill got pushed into the grass after trying to slam the door shut on SVG in turn two.
It wasn't a cake walk.
Hell, Boris Said, long considered to be the archetypal NASCAR road course ringer, has been around the series since the mid to late 90s...he's never won a Cup race. He has one truck win at Sonoma and one Xfinity (then Nationwide) win at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to his name.
So even way back when, NASCAR drivers could handle themselves on the road courses.
There are three road course ringers that have had a lot of success in the modern era, and I think all of them subvert the idea that it's as simple as being able to turn right.
The first is the great Juan Pablo Montoya, who famously got sick of F1 mid-2006, quit McLaren, and decided to become a NASCAR driver instead. Well, come 2007, and JPM is driving the #42 Dodge for Chip Ganassi Racing, and he won at Sonoma in his first attempt. He would only win one more NASCAR race, the 2010 Watkins Glen race. Despite this, I would argue his best season was 2009, when he finished eighth in the points after running as high as third in the season.
The high point was six top five finishes in eight races towards the end of the season, all of which were on ovals. One of which, Fontana, he was well acquainted with from his CART days!
The second is Marcos Ambrose, who in 2011 and 2012, had two consecutive duels with Brad Keselowski at Watkins Glen and came out on top both times. Those two races are badass, and I recommend you watch them, because it's just two big giant stock cars fighting tooth and nail without a care in the world for track limits. It's freaking glorious.
But after that 2012 Watkins Glen win? Well, Marcos then took two straight fifth placed finishes, at Michigan and Bristol, two ovals, and two very different ovals, no less. The third is AJ Allmendinger, who is still in NASCAR and still doing well. With wins on road courses in Cup and the old Champ Car series, and wins on both road courses and ovals in Xfinity. His story continues, most recently as SVG's Kaulig teammate.
So, the moral of the story? Being a good road course racer isn't enough to win NASCAR road races, you need to be a pretty damn good race car driver, and you need to learn stock cars. That means you'll have good showings on the ovals as well as the road courses.
To that end, in addition to SVG's back-to-back Xfinity wins, he also finished third at Atlanta earlier in the season and managed to finish on the lead lap in a Cup race at Talladega this year as well. In fact, I remember in that Talladega race SVG did well in the draft and worked his way to the front, only to fall back when the uppermost line collapsed behind him, and he was left all alone a lane above the drafting pack.
Something that could happen to anyone in a restrictor plate race in NASCAR.
So...NASCAR drivers are good at turning right, the top "road course ringers" in the form of JPM, Marcos Ambrose, and Shane van Gisbergen just happen to, you know, be pretty damn good drivers, and Xfinity races have some crappy ass names.
They let the crappiest name of them all die though.
So please, let's pour one out for the Beef. It's What's for Dinner. 300, the NASCAR Xfinity season opener at Daytona International Speedway.
RIP, 2021-2023. Your name was so bad that it was actually great.

A Community Project to Celebrate a Year of r/OnlyFangsBG3
Hello to our lovely community of darlings, blood bags, and precious little Bhaal babes! As you may remember from last week, your hardworking mod team is in the process of putting together a little project to celebrate our one-year anniversary. We wanted to give ourselves a tiny head start (and, yes, maybe drum up some curiosity!) but we are now ready to announce that…
# We Are Assembling an Astarion Coloring Book!
The community we’ve assembled here is so incredibly talented in such an amazing variety of ways, and we thought this could be a fun way for our creative folks to get to come together and share that talent. ~~And. I mean, yes, *some* of us are slightly sad that we don’t have artistic skill but still want to make pretty pictures of the pretty vampire, *okay??*~~
We are currently looking for visual artists to help us by donating their original line art featuring Astarion, which other members of the sub can then color in whatever media they choose and share with all of us! **If you are willing, please send us your submission no later than September 23, 2024.**
While we are soliciting this art, we will be promoting a selection of charities that Neil publicly supports (more on those in a minute). No money will be going through us at any time, we will only be encouraging you all to donate to the charities directly. If you wish, you can then send us (redacted!!) receipts so that we can get a tally of how much the sub has raised and celebrate our community with some altruism. We won’t be requiring anyone to donate in order to get access to the coloring book, just encouraging donations to those causes on his behalf. At the end of the event, our sub’s birthday (September 30), we will share how much we raised and release a link to the compiled coloring book.
Anyway. That’s what we’re looking to accomplish!
## Requirements
* You are welcome to send us line art from an existing work, or create something new for the event. As long as the art is your own original work, you’re good to go.
* You may create line art by tracing or using filters on your own screenshots. If you use someone else’s screenshot, you must get their permission and credit them appropriately.
* Line art only, please!
* No AI artwork will be accepted.
* Artwork must contain Astarion; otherwise, please feel free to chase your muse. NSFW is fine, solo, M/M, M/F, multiple, the whole tadpole crew, Batstarion, comic panels, whatever floats your boat.
* Feel free to submit as much as you’d like! Depending on the volume of submissions, we may have to narrow things down a bit, but we will make sure that all contributors are represented in the final product.
* Include your name or handle in the bottom left corner. Those posting colored versions of these pages will be required to leave this legible (or rewritten elsewhere on the page) or they will be taken down.
* If you are not a frequent poster on the sub, we may do a bit of extra vetting to try to confirm that the work is your own. Please understand that this is us doing our due diligence to protect artists’ hard work and has nothing to do with you as an individual.
## How to Submit / File Info
If you would like to participate, you may submit your art in a few different ways. You can send an email to [email protected] with the attached image. Or you can send us a [modmail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=r/OnlyFangsbg3) and include a link to your art on Tumblr, Twitter, Imgur, or other platform that your image is hosted on.
As for file types, please submit them as something lossless - so no crunchy jpegs or anything. Types such as PNG, TIFF, SVG (hell even BMP if you can find space to host it lmao) will do splendidly.
For size, we are hoping to stick to "standard letter" sizes - either US Letter (8.5x11 inches), or A4 (21.0x29.7cm). We figure those sizes make the most sense for a coloring book project!
## What Charities Can You Donate to?
We’ve picked two charities from a handful that were listed on Neil’s Twitch channel that you can donate to. These two were picked just to narrow down the choices a bit for simplicity’s sake, but if any of the other ones speak to you, we won’t stop you from donating to them! The ones we’ve selected are:
* [The Red Card](https://www.theredcard.org/) - “Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is the UK’s leading anti-racism educational charity.”
* [Black Lives Matter](https://blacklivesmatter.com/) - “Black Lives Matter Foundation is an abolition-centered foundation fighting institutional injustice and serving Black people globally.” (US-based)
From Neil’s Twitch page
> Please have a look at these charities- Be an ally. Do your bit.
> I am. My family are. We all can.
> Support, move, scream and keep the momentum to help even in small ways like this.
As stated earlier, there’s no requirement to donate to receive the completed coloring book at the end of the sub’s anniversary event; it just seems like a very nice way that we can show our support for Neil and our community! If you do donate, please send us a [modmail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=r/OnlyFangsbg3) with your receipt (blur out any personal information, of course) showing the total you donated. We will tally these up through September 29 and announce the grand total we raised for these charities on September 30th.
## Using the Coloring Book Pages
We’d love it if you shared what you did with the coloring book with the community! Whether you print it out and paint it by hand, color it digitally, use colored pencils, or whatever else your heart comes up with, we’d love to see! We will create a new flair for this purpose as we get closer to The Big Day.
That being said, be sure to credit the original artist! Any posts made with these images that fail to credit the original, or remove the artist's name/signature from the image, **will be removed**. Don't try to pass this off elsewhere as your original work.
## Spread the Word!
Do you know any artists, either friends or via patreon discords, that might be interested in participating? Then please (politely, gently!) see if they want to join in!
##tl;dr
* Send us line art by September 23
* Donate to charities and send us receipts by September 29
* We will release the full coloring book and the total we raised on September 30
* Share your beautiful pages, being sure to credit the original artists
Bonus Angel screenshot that I feel like has some meme potential

Ruins of Alph Ho-Oh replica
I was yet again approached by one of my friends to create something from Pokémon, namely the Ho-Oh puzzle from the Ruins of Alph from Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal. I did such a good job with my previous Pokémon creations that they felt compelled to have something too. This time I was compensated fairly.
I used a screen shot from the Game Boy Color game, traced it in Adobe Illustrator. Instead of trying an exact copy I tried to imitate a look of a ragged outline that resembles the pixelated look without being too on the nose.
Then the file needed to be converted into a SVG in Inkscape (because of some wonkyness importing it into Autodesk Fusion 360), and then imported it into Autodesk Fusion 360, where I extruded the areas into a 3D-printable giant cookie cutter model. With that giant cookie cutter printed out I put that immediately into action and stamped an equally-sized slab of polymer clay (about 15cm x 15cm) and textured it with a balled-up piece of aluminium foil. After 30 minutes of baking and a little bit of cool-off time the most arduous part began with the painting process. It took me about 6 hours of carefully building up (and messing up) the paint job with the crappy acrylic paint that won't get used up fast enough. I messed it up a few times trying some color experiments and using my miniature painting washes. The last part was that gave me the most head ache as they are hard to fix when applied. Washing or rubbing it off meant that the crappy acrylic paint would also be removed. I felt stuck at some point using the wash as it made the surface too glossy and the brown darkened a ton. I was disheartened for a bit but rolled with that mistake. All I wanted was to have some minor darker variations. The majority of the time painting on it was to create a more coherent look by switching between dry brushing and applying very thinned layers of more washes. I got to a point that made me happy again with the outcome (also a little bit of sleep helped too).
For the photo I used my Canon EOS 350D (Canon EOS Rebel XT), for which I needed to buy a new battery. The old battery couldn't hold a charge. Next to my house there is a big patch of moss I find quite appealing to look at and I thought it would complement the golden-brown paint job very well. I propped it up with a small box so the whole thing wouldn't sink completely into the squishy moss bed.

Introducing The Gorilla Troop From The Krefeld Zoo In Germany (more info in the description) by SloggerVlogger Meet the Gorillas from the Krefeld Zoo in Germany! A new troop to the channel. Putting a name to their faces in this introduction video. The new Thursday series. There will be another four videos and then another Gorilla troop that I haven't filmed will follow this series. The troop of seven gorillas live in the area called the Gorilla Garden. Meet Silverback Gorilla Kidogo, Gorilla Oya, Muna and son Santu. Gorilla Miliki and sons Pepe, Bobóto. Kidogo was born on November 15th 2000 at the Givskud Zoo in Denmark. Gorilla Oya was born on June 9th 1988 at the Zoo Zürich Switzerland. Gorilla Muna was born on March 6th 1989 at the Zoo Basel Switzerland. Her son Santu was born on July 14th 2021. Miliki was born on February 20th 2006 at La Vallée des Singes in France. Her son Pepe was born on May 6th 2015 and Bobóto on December 21st 2018. Both were born at Krefeld Zoo in Germany. @feliciacraite Guessed correctly on my community page who the Silverback is. 😁 Filmed through a tire, little Satu is watching Dad Kidogo. Mother Muna is coming up right behind Dad and after her son glances up at her, she picks him up and they have some lunch. Gorilla Oya is next up, the first thing you notice is her stiff finger. Quite a common injury in Gorillas it seems. Kera in Bristol and the little Aaarde at Chessington Zoo have the same injuries. Oya enjoys the bark of a stick and later a German turnip (Kohlrabi). Miliki has her food stuck in her teeth and she's trying to get it out. Pepe is munching on his food. He kind of reminds me a bit of a younger Lope. Last but not least Gorilla youngster Bobóto. As it was just a brief visit I didn't get the chance to film too much of the troop. When I was there, the outside had been shut off and they were building the new outdoor habitat for the great apes. I was a bit too early as they are planning to open the new habitat on Gorilla Day on the 24th of September 2023. You can have a quick look at the outside on my other channel, the travel channel in a hyper-lapse walkthrough of the zoo at: https://youtu.be/SVG-9jLGDkE #KrefeldZoo #Gorillas #Introduction You might have heard about the Krefeld Zoo in the news when they had the awful tragedy on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2019. A fire broke out due to Chinese lanterns and 30 animals lost their lives including Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Orangutans, silvery marmosets, white-faced sakis endangered golden-lion tamarins, fruit bats, reptiles and birds. A horrendously sad day that many of us never forget. The firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading from the ape house to the Gorilla garden. This is where Silverback Kidogo had his troop of seven are housed. Tambo (Muna's first son) moved in September 2020 to Zoo Safari de Thoiry. via YouTube https://youtu.be/JkoPGrBXpJo

How to Make Cricut Stickers: Full Guide for Beginners
Only a crafter can understand the fun of creating stickers with Cricut. In this process, learning how to make Cricut stickers becomes even more important because it gives us more freedom to create unique and perfect stickers instantly. Cricut machines are advanced enough to make anything you want in a few minutes. However, you need proper guidance to create a proper custom sticker using a Cricut machine. In this guide, I will help you through the entire process.
In this tutorial, I’ll show what you’ll need to create a sticker with your favorite font, design, or image in less than 10 minutes. Once you learn the process of making stickers with Cricut, you will have endless opportunities. All you have to do is implement the points mentioned further in the guide.
Supplies Required for Creating Cricut Stickers
Before we begin the guide, gather the supplies outlined below. With all of these items, you will be able to create the best-looking sticker.
Sticker paper or Cricut printable sticker paper
Cricut machine (Preferred that supports Print-Then-Cut )
A computer with the Design Space software installed
Transfer tape
Weeding tool
Scraper
Inkjet printer
Complete guide
Light Grip cutting mat
Step 1: Download the SVG File of the Stickers
I mostly download premade stickers and customize them in the Cricut software. I suggest you download a free SVG file of stickers from somewhere online. Download the file always in .svg format and unzip it.
Step 2: Upload SVG on the Cricut App
To learn how to make Cricut stickers, open the Cricut app and start a New Project.
Next, click the Upload icon in the bottom left toolbar.
Now, browse the downloaded sticker sheet to upload.
After that, select the image type as a Complex from the list.
Tumblr media
Also, if the file is absolutely clear, then there is no need to erase click on Next.
Finally, select “Print Then Cut Image,” add the image name and any tags, and then click “Upload.”
Tumblr media
Note: Instead of uploading a sticker file, you can access the Cricut Design Space library or create stickers.
Step 3: Customize Your Sticker Design
When the design is uploaded, it is on the canvas of the Cricut app, where it can be modified.
We won’t be making any specific modifications, so simply drag the design and get “Print Then Cut” the maximum size, which is 9.25″ x 6.75″.
Next, double-check the design and click on “Make It.“
Tumblr media
Step 4: Select the Printer
Tumblr media
From the drop-down menu, choose the printer and then turn on the “System Dialogue,” this will allow you to access your printer.
Step 5: Take a Printout and Place on the Mat
Tumblr media
Step 6: Cut Out Your Design
Go back to Design Space and choose the base material as a printable vinyl and pressure default.
Tumblr media
Next, load the mat by pressing the Load button on your machine and Design Space. Press Continue and push the flashing Go button on the Cricut machine. Now, the machine will run and cut around each sticker.
Tumblr media
Step 7: Unload the Mat and Weed Out Excess Particles
This is the last step in learning how to make Cricut stickers. Once the cut is complete, take the mat off from the Cricut machine and flip the sticker sheet.
If there are any negative particles, then use the weeding tool and remove them.
Now, peel the stickers from the paper and add them to your project and surface.

Step 8: Apply Your Sticker

Final Thought
Most beginner crafters wonder how to make Cricut stickers. In this blog, I have explained the complete process. First of all, we have to upload or create the sticker design on Cricut Design Space. After that, print your sticker design using the Print then Cut function if it is colorful. And you can cut it out with the Cricut machine and start using it for the weeding procedure. Keep making stickers like this to achieve more quality.

Badge Design 101: Crafting Eye-Catching Digital Open Badges that Impress
In the world of digital credentialing and recognition, open badges have become a popular way to acknowledge achievements, skills, and accomplishments. However, creating badges that capture attention and leave a lasting impression is an art. In this guide, we'll explore the fundamentals of badge design to help you craft eye-catching digital open badges that impress recipients and stakeholders.
**1. Begin with Clarity and Purpose:**
Before diving into the visual elements of badge design, start with a clear understanding of the badge's purpose and the achievements it represents. Consider the following:
- **Learning Objectives:** Define the specific skills or knowledge the badge represents.
- **Audience:** Identify the target audience for the badge.
- **Recognition:** Determine how the badge will be used and recognized.
**2. Choose a Simple Shape:**
The shape of your badge should be distinctive but not overly complex. Simple shapes tend to work best, as they are easily recognizable, even at small sizes. Common choices include circles, squares, and rectangles.
**3. Select a Strong Color Palette:**
Colors play a crucial role in badge design. They convey meaning, evoke emotions, and make badges visually appealing. When choosing colors:
- **Use Branding Colors:** Incorporate colors that align with your organization's branding to maintain consistency.
- **Consider Contrast:** Ensure that text and graphics stand out from the background for readability.
- **Limit the Palette:** Too many colors can be distracting. Stick to a well-thought-out color scheme that includes primary and secondary colors.
**4. Typography Matters:**
Typography should be legible, even at smaller sizes. Choose a clear and easily readable font for text elements on the badge. Be consistent with font choices and sizes to maintain a cohesive design.
**5. Include Meaningful Graphics:**
Graphics and icons can enhance the visual appeal of your badge while providing context. Consider using icons that represent the skills or achievements being recognized. Icons should be relevant and easily recognizable.
**6. Personalization Options:**
Personalization adds a unique touch to badges. Consider including the recipient's name on the badge or other personalized elements. This makes the badge feel more special and significant to the recipient.
**7. Keep it Scalable:**
Badges should look good whether they are displayed in a small email signature or on a large website. Design badges in vector formats (e.g., SVG) to ensure they scale smoothly without losing quality.
**8. Maintain Accessibility:**
Make sure your badge design is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. This includes using alt text for images and ensuring high contrast for text and graphics.
**9. Consider Badge Elements:**
In addition to the main badge design, consider adding elements like ribbons, banners, or stars to denote different levels of achievement or recognition. These elements can make badges more visually engaging.
**10. Seek Feedback:**
Before finalizing your badge design, seek feedback from a diverse group of stakeholders. This can help identify any potential issues and ensure that the design resonates with your target audience.
**11. Test Responsiveness:**
Ensure that your badge design looks good on various devices and platforms, including mobile devices, tablets, and desktops. Responsiveness is key to a seamless badge display experience.
**12. Pilot and Iterate:**
Before launching your badges at scale, consider running a pilot program to gather feedback from recipients and assess the effectiveness of your badges. Use this feedback to make improvements and iterate on your badge designs as needed.
In summary, crafting eye-catching digital open badges that impress requires thoughtful consideration of purpose, design elements, and accessibility. By following these fundamental principles and continuously seeking feedback and improvement, you can create badges that not only recognize achievements but also make a memorable visual impact on recipients and stakeholders, enhancing their value and recognition in the digital credentialing landscape.

ChatGPT can generate HTML/CSS based on simple ASCII mockups
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that ChatGPT 4 can interpret simple ASCII art and do a decent job converting simple designs into HTML/CSS; to quickly create the initial ASCII design I'm using this online tool https://asciiflow.com/ and for the prompt I have used "Generate HTML and CSS (using flexbox) based on the following ascii art:"
Some examples of the ASCII and the result:

Result:

Example #2:

Tumblr media
For this last example the attempt to make it generate a SVG donut chart failed (it gave me a placeholder and suggested to use a JS library to do so instead), so I had to ask it to replace it with vertical bars which are easier to generate, I also had to ask it to "hardcode all countries that belong to the European Union even if its not practical or maintanable" because it was giving me a placeholder and suggesting to "Use an API" to fetch those, which is not bad advice but for quick mockups may not be desirable.
I tried more complicated task like making it animate an ASCII cat art using multiple elements (as they were "frames") but it consitently failed, it did seem to understand that it should show just one element each fraction or a second to the create the motion illusion but it failed on the artistic endeavor of modyfing existing ASCII art.
I hope you find this info helpful, and if you have insights of what works and what doesn't when using ASCII art on ChatGPT to mock up webpages (or anything else) feel free to share those in the comment section below or in the HN thread.
That's the end of the post but while you are here...
