Headhunters Review
FCJ's #Headhunters Review, a #Norwegian thriller that does not meet lofty expectations, but is still a fun mindless thrill ride.
Headhunters (100 minutes, Rated R)
Headhuntersis the critically acclaimed Norwegian thriller form 2011 that has always been declared a must-watch. The title follows Roger Brown, a headhunter by day, but a painting thief by night; his poverty stricken upbringing mixed with his Napoleon complex drives him to commit these thefts. Basically the movie hinges on the protagonist, who is perfectly…

hodejegerne

THE BURNING SEA - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Magnet Releasing
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Since 1969 the Norwegian government has drilled one of the world’s largest oil fields in the neighboring North Sea, a prosperous period of offshore drilling. Now some 50 years later, a crack has opened on the ocean floor, causing a rig to collapse. A team of researchers, including submersible operator Sofia, rushes in to search for the missing and uncovers the cause of the damage. What they’ve caught on video is just the start of a possible apocalyptic catastrophe. The government  calls for the rigs to be evacuated, but Sofia's loving companion Stian becomes trapped in the depths of the sea. With no one offering help, Sofia must go and dive in to rescue him.
REVIEW: From the team that brought us “The Wave” (2015), “The Quake” (2018), now brings audiences an ecological disaster movie that addresses the over drilling of the North Sea. A little bit Irwin Allen and  a little bit Roland Emmerich, THE BURNING SEA tells an intimate disaster tale as four central characters are caught up in a tale of catastrophic, epic proportions.
An issue with many sci-fi and/or disaster movies is a flaw in the internal logic. Is science possible or do events seem plausible? THE BURNING SEA is a rare film where the science feels reasonable and the actions of the government run companies seem realistic. That’s a great attribute as I think it ratchets up the drama and tension, plus it allows the viewer to become more invested in the characters that grants a more compelling view. The characters are nicely written and personable. The conservation of characters makes for a fast paced story that has some nice twists and turns.
The film has a delightful ensemble cast. Kristine Kujath Thorp brings her “A” game as she portrays a scientist and an action hero. Henrik Bjelland is an oil rig worker, a father and Sofia’s love interest. He creates a smart and likable character. Rolf Kristian Larsen is Arthur, Sofia’s colleague at the robotic company, a charming and endearing performance. Bjørn Floberg is the man at the oil company dealing with the crisis, as William Lie. I like to think that there is a play on words with the character’s last name. Floberg does an amusing job of creating a stoic, logical company man who never comes across as a villain and has moments where he lets his humanity peak through.
These guys are masters of disaster films. Everything is seamlessly woven together to deliver breathtaking, panoramic sequences that are state of the art photorealistic action. The cinematography, editing, costumes, and production design are as action packed as any Hollywood big budget action or franchise films. Dare I say it? Yes, they deliver lots of bang for the buck!
There are many disaster films that are larger than life and just sucks the viewer into the action and takes the viewer on a thrill ride. If a key part of the narrative is an environmental; or ecological message it becomes lost by the end. THE BURNING SEA offers all that, but in closing comes full circle and reminds the viewer of the trigger at the heart of the story. Their parting words feels like when Scrooge addresses The Ghost Of Christmas Yet To Come. "Men's courses will foreshadow certain ends, to which, if persevered in, they must lead," said Scrooge. "But if the courses be departed from, the ends will change. Say it is thus with what you show me!". In doing so, it transcends what we think of as a disaster film and creates a genre of their own, foreshadowing cinema. Hopefully, viewers will get the message and these “courses be departed.”
