Previewing the 2024 Democrat Primary
Within a couple weeks of his being sworn in, just about every person on earth will wish Joe Biden was no longer president. Sure, the few surviving John B. Anderson voters will be thrilled to see 4 years of crushing austerity and half-assed attempts at Keynesian stimulus. But most people will begin dreaming about a brighter future.
Good news! The 2024 Democratic primary field is going to contain dozens of options. Bad news! They are all going to be disgusting piles of shit.
The “top tier”
While it’s too early to do any handicapping, these are the candidates the media will treat as having the most realistic chances of securing the nomination.
Kamala Harris
Kamala did not win a single primary delegate in 2020. This is because she dropped out before the first primary, and that was because no one likes her. She has no base beyond a few thousand of twitter’s most violent psychos. Her disingenuousness approaches John Edwards levels: any halfway incredulous person can see immediately beyond her bullshit. She has no principles whatsoever, and while that may be par for the course for Democrats, she lacks even the basic politician’s ability to intuit anything that might, hypothetically, constitute a principle.
Even better: she is an awful public speaker. She sounds like how a talking dog would speak if he were just caught stealing people food off the kitchen table. She communicates in weird grunts and faux sassy squeaks, which is how she imagines real black women sound like, but something about her is unable to sell the bit. She begins her sentences in halfhearted AAVE, stops and panics halfway through as she realizes that maybe this sounds fake and offensive, and then reminds herself oh wait, no, this is okay since I’m black. This doesn’t happen once or twice per speech. This is how every single sentence sounds.
Kamala is like Nancy Pelosi in that no sketch show will ever impersonate her correctly, because anything that came close to authenticity would be considered far too cruel. This might benefit her in the primaries, as she exists in the minds of Democrats as someone and something she absolutely is not in reality. Nominating her would be like allowing your child’s imaginary friend to attempt to drive you to the store.
Andrew Cuomo
Easily one of the 50 worst people alive, Cuomo has a solid chance because Democrats, same as Republicans, are unable to differentiate between electability and self-serving ruthlessness. Cuomo used the deadliest public health crisis in American history as a pretext for cutting Medicaid and firing 5,000 MTA workers, and his approval rating increased. New York Dems are little piggies who love eating shit. If we assume that the political media will continue their habit of refusing to discuss the legislative history of right wing Democrats, Cuomo might well cruise to the nomination and then lose to literally any human being the GOP nominates by an historic margin.
Joe Biden
The party loves him because he is a right wing racist. “Progressives” tolerate him because black primary voters over 40 supported him, and their opinion is supposedly a magic window into god’s truth. Everyone else can tell he is manifestly senile. I don’t put it above the DNC to pick a candidate who is in horrible health, dying, or even dead--whatever the financial sector wants, they’ll get. But I would be shocked if his approval rating is above 39% by mid-2023, and by that point deep fake technology will be advanced enough they’ll put out a very lifelike video in which the Max Headroom version of Joe explains he’s proud of his accomplishments--that budget’s almost balanced already--but, man, I gotta abd--I gotta abdica--, uhh, I gotta, I, uhh, I gotta move down, man.
Wild Cards
These candidates would have all have a chance if they ran, but they could all much more easily retire to Little Saint James off of kickbacks they’ve gotten from Citibank and I.G. Farben.
Rahm Emanuel
Rahm is going to receive some hugely influential post in the Biden administration. Let’s say he becomes Secretary of Education. His signature achievement will be replacing all elementary school teachers with Amazon’s Alexa, which saved the taxpayers so much money we were able to quadruple the number of armed police officers we put into high schools. This will give him several thousand positive profiles on network news programs and the near-universal support of the Silicon Valley vampires who will own 99% of the country by the time Biden’s term ends. They will use their fancy mind control devices to convince geriatic primary voters that Rahm’s the one who will bring Decency back to the white house. His candidacy will be the paragon of wokeness, as expressing concern toward the fact that he covered up the police murder of a black guy will get you called a racist.
Rahm has a bonus in that Jewish men are now Schrodeniger’s PoC. When they are decent human beings, they are basic, cis white men who are stealing attention from disabled trans candidates of color. When they love austerity and apartheid, they become the most vulnerable people of color on earth and criticizing them in any way is genocide. No one will be able to mention a single thing Rahm has ever done or said without opening themselves to accusations of antisemitism, and that gives him a strong edge against the rest of the field. The good news is that an Emmanuel candidacy would result in over 50% of black voters choosing the GOP candidate--which, I guess that’s not really good but it would certainly be funny.
Gavin Newsom
Newsom is every bit as feckless as Cuomo, but he doesn’t put off the same “bad guy in an early Steven Segal movie” vibes. He will mention climate change 50 times per speech and no one will bother to mention how he keeps signing fracking contracts even though his state is now on fire 11 months of the year. If anything, this will be spun into an argument about how he’s actually the candidate best suited to handle all the water refugees gathering on the southern border. Look for his plan to curb emissions by 10% by the year 2150 to get high marks from Sierra Club nerds. He’s also a celebate librarian’s idea of what constitutes a handsome man, so he’ll have some support from the type of women who claim to hate all men.
Larry Summers
I mean, why not? Larry, like most members of the Obama administration, has politics that are eerily similar to those of Jordan Peterson. In normal circumstances, this makes a person a dangerous fascist who should not be platformed. But if that person has a D next to their name this makes them a realistic pragmatist who has what it takes to bring suburban bankers into our tent. If current trends in Woke Phrenology continue apace, Larry’s belief that women are inherently bad at STEM will be liberal orthodoxy by 2023, and his dedication to the Laffer Curve could see him rake in massive donations. Seriously, I’m not kidding: cultural liberalism is now fully dedicated to identity essentialism and balanced budgets. Larry is their ideal candidate. If he were black and/or a woman, I’d put him in the very top tier.
Jay Inslee
Unlike Newsom, Inslee’s attempt to crown himself the King of Global Warming won’t be immediately derailed, since his state is only on fire because of protestors. This, however, poses a different problem. He’s going to be a good test case for the Democrat’s uneasy peace with the ever increasing share of the electorate who become catatonic upon hearing a pronoun. On the one hand, you need to take their votes for granted. On the other hand, they’re not like black people or regular gays: most voters actively, consciously despise wokies, and associating yourself with them will ruin a campaign even in deep blue areas. There’s still gonna be riots in a year. Biden’s gonna announce the sale of all our nation’s potable water to the good folks at Nestle and some trans freak named Sasha-Malia DeBalzac is going to use that as an opportunity to sell their new pamphlet about how it’s fascist to not burn down small businesses. No matter what Inslee does in response, it’ll end his career.
AOC
I’m not one of those “AOC is a secret conservative” weirdos, but I am aware enough of basic reality to know she has zero chance of coming close to the nomination. The right and the center both regard her as a literal demon. The party is already blaming her for the fact that a handful of faceless Reagan acolytes failed to flip their suburban districts even though they ran on sensible pragmatic proposals like euthanizing the homeless. The recriminations will only get more unhinged when the Dems eat shit in the 2022 midterms. She will be a Russian, she will be white male, she will be a communist, she will be a homophobe: any insult or conspiracy theory you can name, MSNBC will spend hours discussing. Her house seat challenger will receive a record amount of support from the DNC in 2024 and it’ll be all she can do to remain in congress.
Larry Hogan
Don’t be dissuaded by the fact that he’s a Republican. Larry is the DNC’s ideal candidate: a physically repulsive conservative who owes his entire career to appealing to the most spiteful desires of suburban white people. He’s an open racist in a material sense--if you’re old-school enough to think racism is a matter of beliefs and actions, rather than the presence of cultural signifiers--but his is the beloved “never Trump” style of racism that Dems covet. He’s also a Proven Leader who thinks the role of government should be to finance the construction of investment property and give police the resources they need to run successful drug trafficking operations. Few people embody the Democrat worldview more than Larry.
The Losers Bracket
These people will have at least a small chance due solely to the fact that the Democrats love losing. They have lost in the past, and in the Democrat Mind that makes them especially qualified.
Joe Kennedy
The man looks like a mushroom-human hybrid from a JRPG. Trump proved that physical hideousness need not doom a presidential bid, but a candidate still needs some kind of charm or oratorical abilities or, god forbid, a decent platform. Joe aggressively lacks all of these things. A vanity campaign would be a good way to raise money and perhaps secure an MSNBC gig, so Joe might still run.
Mayor Pete
I am 100% convinced that Pete’s 2020 run was a CIA plot meant to prevent working class Americans from ever having a chance of living decent lives. I am also 100% aware that Democrats are dumb enough to enthusiastically support a CIA plot meant to prevent working class Americans from ever having a chance of living decent lives. If we have some sort of military or terror disaster between now and 2023 the Dems are sure to want a TROOP, and wait wait wait you’re telling me this one is a gay troop? Holy hell there’s no way that could lose!
Stacy Abrams
Never underestimate the power of white guilt. She lost the gubernatorial race to Gomer Pyle’s grandson, and her spiritual guidance of the Dems saw the party lose black voters in Georgia in 2020. Nonetheless, she is regarded as a magic font of fierceness within the DNC. She might stand a chance if she can establish herself as the most conservative non-white candidate in the field, but there’s going to be stiff competition for that honor.
Elizabeth Warren
Liz is probably angry that the party so shamelessly sold her out even after she was a good little girl and sabatoged Bernie’s campaign for them--yet another example of high ranking US government officials reneging on their promises to the Native American community. Smdh. The fact that this woman hasn’t been bankrupted a dozen times over by various Wallet Inspectors genuinely astounds me. So Liz is probably going to run again, and her campaign will be even sadder the second time around.
It might surprise you to hear this if you don’t work at a college or NGO, but Liz diehards actually do exist. She’ll get even less support this time because there will be no viable leftist in the field for her to spoil, but she’ll still hang in long enough to make sure the very worst possible candidate beats out the second worst possible candidate. Maybe she’ll fabricate a rape accusation against Sherrod Brown. Maybe she’ll spend her entire allotted debate time doing a land acknowledgment. With Liz, anything is possible--so long as it ends in failure.
Amy Klobuchar
Amy was the most bloodthirsty of the 2020 also rans. She will double down on the unpopular failures of the Biden administration, explaining that if you weren’t such a selfish idiot you’d love the higher social security retirement age and oh my god are so such a moron you think you shouldn’t go bankrupt to get a COVID vaccine? There’s a non-unsubstantial segment of the Democratic base that’s self-hating enough to find this appealing, but it won’t be enough to make her viable.
Martha Coakley
She lost Ted Kennedy’s senate seat to a retarded man who was pretending to be even more retarded than he actually was. Then she lost a gubernatorial race to a guy who openly promised Massachusetts voters that he would punish them for electing him. Her record of failure is unparalleled, making her perhaps the ideal Democrat standard bearer for the twenty twenties.

“Like if you give someone a lily or a rose, would there be a hidden meaning for the receiver?”
Harry nodded. “Of course. If I gave you this pink rose, it’d mean admiration or appreciation.”
Louis blinked down at Harry who seemed unperturbed by his own words. He carried on touching the flowers with his gentle hands. “And if I gave you a daisy, it’d mean innocence.” — Retirement AU. That’s all you need to know.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman may be retired, but she's doing everything she can to make gymnastics safer for young girls who aspire to be the next Aly or Simone.
In 2017, Raisman released her book Fierce, describing the sexual abuse she experienced at the hands of the USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar and in 2018, delivered her powerful testimony at Nassar's 2018 sentencing hearing. (He has since been convicted and has been sentenced to 175 years in prison.) Since then, she's been working to provide young athletes with the abuse-free environment she wishes she had by speaking out against USA Gymnastics and working with organizations like Darkness to Light, the nation's leading advocate for the prevention of child sexual abuse. She's also become a vocal mental health advocate, shedding light on the often silent mental health struggles that survivors of sexual abuse experience.
As an Aerie ambassador since 2018, she has always released collections that are deeply personal, both in design and cause. (In a previous collection, a sports bra was printed with 'Trust Yourself', something Raisman says was hard to do after the abuse she experienced.) Her newest capsule collection, OFFLINE by Aerie x Aly Raisman, available February 26, will be Raisman's third collaboration with the brand that has benefited Darkness to Light.
Ahead of the collection launch, we talked to Raisman about her journey to healing — and why the fight for justice is far from over.
You've been involved with Darkness to Light since 2018. What are they, and you, doing to ensure athletes have abuse-free environments?
I started working with Darkness to Light very soon after I spoke in court a couple of years ago. They actually reached out after they saw all of us speak and it's just been really incredible to be able to learn from them. I've taken the course that they have and I really believe in it. It's something I wish that every single adult took because if we want to prevent child sexual abuse, we have to have the adults educated — we can't expect the children to know something's wrong. One of the things we're working on is the Flip the Switch campaign, which offers training for free because we recognize trying to convince adults to take training is hard, especially when it's about sexual abuse. A lot of people don't want to talk about it or think about it. So the collaborations with Aerie are so amazing because it donates a lot of money to the campaign and allows people to take this training for free, which is so important.
Simone Biles said in a recent 60 Minutes interview that she wouldn't feel comfortable with her future daughter being part of USA gymnastics because she's not confident the abuse won't happen again. Do you feel the same?
I've thought a lot about this question and, you know, I realized it's not the sport [that's the problem]. I love gymnastics so much and it has brought me so many incredible lessons and friendships and so many amazing experiences. So it's not the sport, it's the corrupt system — that's the problem. It's the organization, it's the people that enable these things to happen. And so you know, I agree with Simone that USA gymnastics, the United States Olympic Committee, haven't done what we've been asking them to do to ensure this doesn't happen again. A really important thing that has not been done that we've been asking for for years is: We want answers. It's so important to have an independent investigation because you can't say that things are better if we don't understand who knew exactly what, when, how this happened and what [aspects] of the system were flawed or corrupt that allowed this to go on for so long. And it's really important for us to understand that for us to be able to believe in a better USA gymnastics. And they still haven't done that. In fact, I feel like they're still trying to get away from acting like they did anything wrong, which is not okay.
I also think it's important to recognize that the way survivors feel can be greatly impacted by how their abuse is handled or not handled. Ours has been really poorly handled. So it really impacts survivors because this has been going on for so long and we're still having to talk about it in interviews because nothing has changed. It's always triggering when you have to talk about it; when you see things in the news about it. It's taking years and years and years, when it should not, it shouldn't be like that.
You've been outspoken about the anxiety and PTSD you've experienced as a result of your experience and you've also been a big mental health advocate these past few years. What do you want people to know about the healing process and what has that looked like for you as of late?
The last couple of months I'm starting to feel a little bit more like myself, but I have, you know, ups and downs just like everyone else. Healing isn't one size fits all and every day I feel differently. Some days I feel calmer and other days I feel triggered by the smallest things. I still get triggered often, but I think that's normal when there's so much trauma that I've experienced. I'm trying to take it day by day, but multiple times a week I will spend time writing in a journal and talking to an expert, and just really working on myself, but it's a process.
But I'm also hoping to help educate people that healing takes a long time and abuse isn't something that you just suffer in the moment; it can really carry on with you. And I think a really important thing for people to understand is that survivors being supported and heard and believed is really, really crucial to their healing because when you've gone through abuse, there's often so much gaslighting. There's a lot of manipulation. It's really can be very confusing. You start to second-guess your own thoughts. You start to feel like you can't trust yourself anymore. You don't know what's right. I just hope that we get to a point one day where when a survivor shares their story publicly, people understand that you can't know what anyone else is going through. We just have to be compassionate.
You recently partnered with Woodward gymnastics camp, which you actually attended when you were younger, to help with their program and also champion a safer environment for the campers. All staff will undergo Darkness to Light training, but how else are you helping to create a different experience for this next generation? I imagine mental health is much more of a conversation.
We want the kids to have fun and recognize that they're more than just an athlete, whether it's a gymnast or a skateboarder or whatever they come to camp for. It's also important to recognize that when the kids come to camp, they may be struggling with, you know, being bullied back home or maybe they're having trouble with something going on at home or at their gym. So we want to give tools to help kids so that they really trust their gut, and empower them to ask questions. I wish I asked more questions growing up. I'm trying to learn from the things I wish I had when I was younger by talking to other survivors or other athletes.
I definitely think the [mental health] conversation is getting so much better — I have seen a shift even in the way I feel talking about [mental health]. In the first interview I did a couple of years ago talking about anxiety and depression, I felt really embarrassed and now I don't feel like that at all. If anything, it feels freeing. I know that so many people are experiencing it, so it just feels nice to be able to connect with people and it makes it a little easier to navigate because I don't feel like I'm suffering alone.
Some people are saying that it's a new era for gymnastics right now; there are all of these fun routines going viral and it's more joy-filled and less uptight. What's your take on that?
I'm not competing anymore so it's hard to say, but I think it's so great to see the collegiate gymnasts and how their routines, I mean, they look like they're having so much fun. I think that it's sort of like anything else — of course, there are a lot of gymnasts that might be enjoying themselves and may feel like there are certain parts of [the sport] that are better. But there are also a lot of collegiate gymnasts that have spoken out in the last few years about different types of abuse, including verbal abuse. And it's the same with the elite world — there are some coaches that I hear from the gymnasts that are great, and certain coaches that aren't. So, it's hard to generalize, but overall, it's really nice to see. There was so much about abuse, and we're so grateful for the support, but I think it's also really great for the fans to see gymnasts having fun as well.
But again, it's important that we also recognize that the leadership still at USA gymnastics is not doing the right thing. They need to investigate and they have to be transparent about what happened and why it happened. In fact, Darkness to Light had been working with USA Gymnastics for about six years. And they said they weren't doing the things they were suggesting and so they decided not to work with them anymore — they just want to put out a press release [and be done with it]. You can look at their press statements that they put out now and they're very similar to what they were decades ago. It's just a lot of the same talk, but no action behind it.

An Old School Lesson from Larry Bird. Imagine the difference between REFUSING money you had coming to you because you felt you might no longer benefit the team... to demanding max contracts no matter how much you might hurt the team. How many people know this story about Larry Bird? Special “old school” points for anyone who can name the last track…I remember it being used for an old NBA film I saw as a kid and decided to resurrect it. Anyway… I was reading The Dream Team, a detailed look at the 92 squad, and I don’t know if people remember that Larry Bird’s back was pretty much prematurely ending his career. He still played admirably in the Olympics, but the point I’m getting at is that Larry had two more years on his contract with the Celtics. Heading into the next season after the Olympics all Larry had to do was play 60 games and he’d get 8 million…Not a lot by today’s standards, but times were different. Besides, it’s not about the money, it’s about the principal.. He was due to receive 3.75 million of that on August 15th. Remember, The Dream Team just beat Croatia for the gold on August 8th, only a few days before Larry was due a payout. Larry didn't feel like he could perform for the Celtics the way he should, but he hadn’t had time to prepare his retirement letter because of the Olympics so he backdated the document to make sure he didn’t receive the payout. In Bird’s mind you don’t take money you don’t earn. It was just another reminder that these guys were about competing first. They were about winning. They were about team greatness. They cared about the reputation of the franchises they played for. Sure, they set a lot of records along the way, but they set those records in the pursuit of the love of competition, not for the sake of setting records. Today, we have sports analysts saying things like, “it’s fine for the team to suffer as long as individuals get theirs.” Players are too busy making commercials and picking out silly outfits to wear to press conferences to improve their outside shooting for the sake of the team. Max contracts, huge payouts, at the end of fizzling careers all while the franchise suffers. The contrast between today’s mentality and the mentality demonstrated by the likes of Larry Legend is astonishing. #larrybird #larrylegend #oldschool #competition #winning #money #records #lebronjames

Tiny Town, Big Decision: What Are We Willing to Pay to Fight the Rising Sea? AVON, N.C. — Bobby Outten, a county manager in the Outer Banks, delivered two pieces of bad news at a recent public meeting. Avon, a town with a few hundred full-time residents, desperately needed at least $11 million to stop its main road from washing away. And to help pay for it, Dare County wanted to increase Avon’s property taxes, in some cases by almost 50 percent. Homeowners mostly agreed on the urgency of the first part. They were considerably less keen on the second. People gave Mr. Outten their own ideas about who should pay to protect their town: the federal government. The state government. The rest of the county. Tourists. People who rent to tourists. The view for many seemed to be, anyone but them. Mr. Outten kept responding with the same message: There’s nobody coming to the rescue. We have only ourselves. “We’ve got to act now,” he said. The risk to tiny Avon from climate change is particularly dire — it is, after all, located on a mere sandbar of an island chain, in a relentlessly rising Atlantic. But people in the town are facing a question that is starting to echo along the American coastline as seas rise and storms intensify. What price can be put on saving a town, a neighborhood, a home where generations have built their lives? Communities large and small are reaching for different answers. Officials in Miami, Tampa, Houston, San Francisco and elsewhere have borrowed money, raised taxes or increased water bills to help pay for efforts to shield their homes, schools and roads. Along the Outer Banks — where tourist-friendly beaches are shrinking by more than 14 feet a year in some places, according to the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management — other towns have imposed tax increases similar to the one Avon is considering. On Monday, county officials will vote on whether or not Avon will join them. This despite the reality that Avon’s battle is most likely a losing one. At its highest point, the town is just a couple dozen feet above sea level, but most houses, as well as the main road, are along the beachfront. “Based on the science that I’ve seen for sea-level rise, at some point, the Outer Banks — the way they are today — are not forever,” said David Hallac, superintendent of the national parks in eastern North Carolina, including the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which encompasses the land around Avon. “Exactly when that happens is not clear.” The Outer Banks have a rich past. Hatteras Island, originally home to members of the Algonquin tribe, is near the site of the so-called lost colony of Roanoke. A few miles north and several centuries later, the Wright brothers flew their first airplane. And it is the vulnerability to the sea — the very threat Avon is wrestling with today — that, in a twist of fate, helped transform the Outer Banks into a tourist spot, according to Larry Tise, a former director of North Carolina’s Division of Archives and History. In 1899 a terrible hurricane all but destroyed the islands, and the state decided not to spend money developing them. Land speculators later swooped in, snapping up property and marketing the curious local history to attract tourists. Today, tourism dominates Avon, a hamlet of T-shirt shops and cedar-shake mansions on stilts lining the oceanfront. A few blocks inland sits a cluster of modest older houses, called the Village, shaded by live oaks, Eastern red cedars and wax myrtles. This is where most of the remaining lifelong Avon residents live. Audrey Farrow’s grandmother grew up in Avon and met Ms. Farrow’s grandfather when he moved to town as a fisherman in the late 1800s. Ms. Farrow, who is 74, lives on the same piece of land she, and her mother before her, grew up on. Standing on her porch last week, Ms. Farrow talked about how Avon had changed in her lifetime. Vacationers and buyers of second homes have brought new money but have pushed out locals. And the ocean itself has changed. The water is now closer, she said, and the flooding more constant. The wind alone now pushes water up the small road where she lives and into her lawn. “If we’ve had rain with it, then you feel like you’ve got waterfront property,” she said. From any angle, the reckoning for Avon seems to be drawing nearer. Over the past decade, hurricanes have caused $65 million in damage to Highway 12, the two-lane road that runs along the Outer Banks and connects Avon and other towns to the mainland. The federal and state governments are spending an additional $155 million to replace a section of Highway 12 with a 2.4-mile bridge, as the road can no longer be protected from the ocean. Hatteras Island has been evacuated five times since 2010. County officials turned to what is called beach nourishment, which involves dredging sand from the ocean floor a few miles off the coast and then pushing it to shore through a pipeline and layering it on the beach. But those projects can cost tens of millions of dollars. And the county’s requests for federal or state money to pay for them went nowhere. So the county began using local money instead, splitting the cost between two sources: revenue from a tax on tourists, and a property tax surcharge on local homes. In 2011, Nags Head became the first town in the Outer Banks to get a new beach under that formula. Others followed, including Kitty Hawk in 2017. Ben Cahoon, the mayor of Nags Head, said that paying $20 million to rebuild the beach every few years was cheaper than buying out all the beachfront homes that would otherwise fall into the sea. He said he could imagine another two or three cycles of beach nourishment, buying his city 20 or 25 more years. After that, he said, it’s hard to guess what the future holds. “Beach nourishment is a great solution, as long as you can afford it,” Mr. Cahoon said. “The alternative choices are pretty stark.” Let Us Help You Understand Climate Change Now the county says it’s Avon’s turn. Its beach is disappearing at a rate of more than six feet per year in some places. During the meeting last month, Mr. Outten described Avon’s needs. As the beach disappears, even a minor storm sends ocean water across Highway 12. Eventually, a hurricane will push enough water over that road to tear it up, leaving the town inaccessible for weeks or more. In response, the county wants to put about one million cubic yards of sand on the beach. The project would cost between $11 million and $14 million and, according to Mr. Outten, would need to be repeated about every five years. That impermanence, combined with the high cost, has led some in Avon question whether beach nourishment is worth the money. They point to Buxton, the next town south of Avon, whose beach got new sand in 2018, paid for through higher taxes. Now, most of that sand has washed away, leaving a beachfront motel and vacation rentals teetering over the water. “Every bit of it’s gone,” Michael David, who grew up in Avon and owns a garage in Buxton, said during last month’s meeting. “We’re just masking a problem that never gets fixed.” Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Outten defended beach nourishment, despite its being temporary. “I don’t think we can stop erosion. I think we can only slow it down,” he said. In interviews with more than a dozen homeowners in Avon, a frequent concern was how the county wants to divide the cost. People who own property along the beach will benefit the most, Mr. Outten said, because the extra sand will protect their homes from falling into the ocean. But he said everyone in town would benefit from saving the road. To reflect that difference, the county is proposing two tax rates. Homeowners on the ocean side of the road would pay an extra 25 cents for every $100 of assessed value — an increase of 45 percent over their current tax rate. On the inlet side, the extra tax would be just one-fifth that much. Sam Eggleston, a retired optometrist who moved to Avon three years ago from outside Raleigh and bought a house on the western side of town, said even that smaller amount was too much. He said that because Highway 12 is owned by the state, the state should pay to protect it. If the government wants to help, Mr. Eggleston argued, it should pay people to move their houses somewhere else — a solution he said would at least be permanent. “To keep spending millions and millions of dollars on the beach, to me doesn’t make sense,” he said. That view was not shared by people who live on the beach. When Carole and Bob Peterson bought a house on the ocean in 1997, it was protected from the water by two rows of huge dunes, Ms. Peterson said. Years of storms have washed away those dunes, leaving their 2,800-square-foot home exposed to the water. Ms. Peterson acknowledged that she and her neighbors would benefit the most from rebuilding the beach. But the rest of the town should be willing to pay for it too, she said, because it protects the jobs and services they depend on. “People that live over there, on that side, don’t understand that the beach is what keeps them alive,” she said, pointing across the road. “If you don’t have this beach, people aren’t going to come here.” Audrey Farrow’s son, Matthew, a commercial fisherman, said he worried about the future of the place he grew up in. Between the flooding and the demand for vacation homes, which continues to drive up real estate prices, he said, it was getting harder to make a good life in Avon. “I’m telling my kids already,” Mr. Farrow said, “go somewheres else.” Source link Orbem News #Big #Decision #Fight #pay #rising #Sea #tiny #Town

GI Joe: Remixed, Super-Soldiers
So, let’s talk super-soldiers GI Joe has two of 'em, the first being Sgt. Savage (as discussed previously), and the other being Super Trooper:
youtube
WRT the latter, all we have established A: he exists, B: he is a super-soldier, and C: Since his toy's filecard lists his real name as Paul Latimer, he is related to Gen. Hawk's disgraced naval buddy Adm. George Latimer who briefly defected to Cobra when he was forced to retire, as seen in the Sunbow cartoon episode "Sink the Montana!". Leaving the Joe's behind, let's talk baddies, starting with SKAR's resident super-soldier Wreckage, the character who, IMO, justifies the existence of GI Joe Extreme, and is not to be confused with the Joe of the same name. So, basic story; US Soldier on a mission that goes south, wakes up in a hospital where a General informs him he's going to be a guinea pig for super-soldier experiments, for the benefit of the US military. Several months of agonizing torture later, he's busted out by Iron Klaw, who offers him a chance at revenge. Betrayed by his country and transformed into a hideous freak, the super-soldier agrees; since the man he used to be is gone and all that's left is wreckage, he takes Wreckage as his new name. Of course, it was actually SKAR that did this to him, after shooting down the medevac chopper carrying him; something Count Von Rani has gone to a great deal of trouble from preventing him from ever finding out. He's an eight-foot tall angry wall of meat who makes Roadblock and Heavy Duty look like twigs, and is stronger than he looks with bulletproof (in the body armor sense, not the Superman sense) skin. At some point during the experiments he lost an eye and an arm, the latter being replaced by a bionic prosthetic that is not only stronger than his already ridiculously strong flesh-and-blood arm, but is laserproof, AND shoots lasers (which, side note, makes it probably the most advanced laser weapon on the planet.). He is not a happy man. To begin with, he's an ugly freak, he's a cripple (the arm is great for wrecking stuff, not so much for opening doorknobs or holding hands or, y'know, feeling things; and he still has only one eye), he has phantom limb syndrome, his bionic arm chafes where it rubs up against his flesh, and the simple fact that the human body is NOT supposed to be that big. Because, yes, while the scientists who made him into this...thing put in workarounds to prevent his combat effectiveness from being limited by weak bones, heart trouble, etc. they didn't do shit about the constant aches and pains. He's also really conflicted about what he does; I mean, he has a burning hatred of the US and the American world-system in general, the US military in particular, and the US Army in specific, and he will be forever grateful to Iron Klaw for (he thinks) rescuing him, but that doesn't mean he likes being a terrorist, he just doesn't see that he has any choice. He's in this weird position where he's the second-most reliable of Iron Klaw's generals (after Steel Raven), as he is neither a giggling psychopathic loon like Inferno or a backstabbing mercenary weasel like Rampage, and thus can generally be relied upon to carry-out his orders and not to go offscript and follow some insane/stupid plan to obtain some equally stupid/insane objective of his own devising, but at the same time he does have a conscience and will periodically flat-out refuse to do certain things. There's also that time when Iron Klaw offered to upgrade his bionic arm and Wreckage responded "I hate the one I already have, why would I want a 'better' one?", and then hung up the phone. Of course, there's also Serpentor, who in addition to being created by mixing-and-matching the DNA of some of history's greatest conquerors and military leaders, is slightly tweaked for superior physical performance and intelligence. Only slightly though; he's meant as a field commander, not a line soldier, after all, and stabilizing all those different sets of DNA was tricky enough as it is. And speaking of Serpy, there's his right-hand man, Venomous Maximus. In addition to having all the benefits of each type of animal-hybrid V-trooper, is also a clone of quite possibly the greatest military leader of the modern age, Gen. Hawk. Note that the original plan was to clone the late Gen. Flagg, but Hawk happened to be visiting his old friend Larry's grave when Serpy rolled up to steal the body, and decided this would be even better. Speaking of the V-Troops (who, to be clear are mostly people altered by animal Genes, not the other way 'round, nor are they generally made in tanks), I have long wanted to have a discussion one the pros and cons of the various mass-produced super-soldiers, including, but not limited to, BATs, Bio-Vipers (note that, despite the name, are not actually Vipers, IE trained soldiers, but fully-artificial constructs), Nano-Vipers*, Cyber-Vipers*, IRON Stormtroopers, Blue Ninjas, Zaps, Skyrenes, your basic Cobra-La guys (unsurprisingly, the masters of bioengineering have tweaked their soldiers for superior performance) and I'm probably missing some. That said, we've only discussed the former two. To wit: Bio-Vipers are protoplasmic goo made of modified plant material that's been made to assume a humanoid shape. They're hella strong, can take lots of punishment cuz they don't have any internal organs to damage, and can reconstitute themselves if bits of 'em are separated off, by say, getting shot at. And they can get bigger and stronger by absorbing biomass, Blob-style. And they have "stretching powers". The original prototype version was only slightly more intelligent than the plants they're made out of; all they know to do is to absorb organic material (also, they can feel pain, because Mindbender is a creep). That said, they become more intelligent as they get older, able to learn and adapt, albeit slowly:
The mass-produced variety has an implanted control module that interfaces with what passes for their nervous system, giving them a boost in the intelligence department, and enabling them to be useful soldiers. The control module also keeps them from getting too smart, keeping them at around an ape-level of intelligence, or absorbing too much biomass.
Theoretically, their lack of native intelligence can be bypassed by having a person control them mentally, but Mindbendber is still working the kinks out of that.
Bio-Vipers are cheaper than the BATs; once you've got a certain amount of Bio-Viper goo, all you need to do is keeping adding biomass and it'll keep replicating. You just scoop some out, stick in a control module (which I imagine isn't that much more expensive to make than, say, a smartphone), zap 'em with the animating machine, and you're good to go. The main cost is maintenance of the animating machine and the assembly line robots. Meanwhile, the BATs require a a constant flow of specialized materiel, which then has to be made into electronics and mechanical parts, and then those parts assembled into a BAT. On the plus side, you can use expendable slave laborers in place of expensive industrial robots for certain portions of the work. The big advantage of BATs compared to human soldiers is that they don't get tired and they're nigh-indestructible; it takes a colossal amount of firepower to take them down. Like, if you aren't equipped to fight a tank, don't even bother trying. They're also massively inhumanly strong, have somewhat superior speed and reflexes than humans, and they require less maintenance than human troops, but these are less important. (also they don't disobey orders or have bad morale and such) The big advantage of Bio-Vipers compared to human soldiers is that they're self-repairing; it's only somewhat harder to take them down that it would a human soldier in body armor, but getting them to stay down requires either a lucky shot that takes out the control module, specialized chemical weapons, or a big enough boom to vaporize them entirely (IE you've taken out the whole area) The big problem with the BATs is that they're dumb and need a constant stream of instructions. The big problem with the Bio-Vipers is that without a control module, they either turn into the Blob, get smart enough to think for themselves, or both. Unfortunately, the way the control module interfaces with what passes for a Bio-Vipers nervous system means that, once one is installed, if the control module is heavily damaged, the Bio-Viper is de-animated, making it marginally easier to put them down. Although some would argue this is a good thing, since see what happens to a Bio-Viper without one. Note that is theoretically possible, if a control module is damaged or removed in certain particular ways, for the Bio-Viper to NOT de-animate. This is unlikely, but the possibility has led to some sleepless nights.
There are probably other types of super-soldiers (Revanche’s Blue Ninjas, for example) but we have yet to discuss ‘em.
*Quite a few types of Viper have been augmented for superior performance of one kind or another, but these are the only ones where it's sufficient to be counted as super-soldiers, I think.

Trump Extends Social Distancing Guidelines Through End of April (NYT) President Trump retreated Sunday from his desire to relax coronavirus guidelines by Easter, announcing instead that all Americans must continue to avoid nonessential travel, going to work, eating at bars and restaurants, or gathering in groups of more than 10 for at least another month and perhaps until June. The grim recommendation, which the president made in the White House Rose Garden, came just a day before the end of a two-week period in which the world’s largest economy has largely shut down with staggering consequences: businesses shuttered, schools and colleges emptied, and social life all but suspended.
Jobless filings may set another record (Bloomberg) The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits may set a record for a second straight week, following last week’s report of 3.28 million filings. The darkest prediction sees that figure almost doubling. And with so many out of work, nobody knows what will happen when $81 billion worth of rent comes due April 1. Tenants in New York City may be allowed to use existing security deposits, but it would be a temporary fix at best.
Older retail workers say they’re worried about their health--but need the money (Washington Post) The number of retirement-age Americans working in retail has increased steadily since the 2008 recession as they try to make ends meet. Nearly one-quarter of retail workers are 55 or older, and 7 percent are over 65, according to Labor Department data, which means that the demographic most vulnerable to the coronavirus is increasingly on its front lines, selling groceries, medicine and other necessities to crowds of shoppers. Although supermarkets across the country have implemented seniors-only hours and priority home delivery for their older customers, they have made few accommodations for their 4.4 million employees who are 55-plus. Many store employees say they do not have access to protective gear such as gloves or enough disinfectant to wipe down cash registers, leaving them to choose either a steady paycheck or their health.
Hay fever or virus? For allergy sufferers, a season of worry (AP) The spring breezes of 2020 are carrying more than just tree pollen. There’s a whiff of paranoia in the air. For millions of seasonal allergy sufferers, the annual onset of watery eyes and scratchy throats is bumping up against the global spread of a new virus that produces its own constellation of respiratory symptoms. Forecasters are predicting a brutal spring allergy season for swaths of the U.S. at the same time that COVID-19 cases are rising dramatically. That’s causing angst for people who never have had to particularly worry about their hay fever, other than to stock up on antihistamines, decongestants and tissues. Now they’re asking: Are these my allergies? Or something more sinister? (And bystanders are sometimes asking the same.)
Coronavirus response highlights deepening partisan divide (AP) In Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti has instituted a shutdown on a city of nearly 4 million people and threatened uncooperative business owners with power shutoffs and arrest. In Mississippi, home to nearly 3 million people, Gov. Tate Reeves has allowed most businesses to stay open--even restaurants, so long as they serve no more than 10 people at a time. The divergent approaches are evidence that not even a global pandemic can bridge the gaping political divisions of the Trump era. Republican leaders have been far more likely to resist the most aggressive social distancing measures. But in the more crowded population centers on the East and West coasts where the disease first appeared, the Democrats in charge have been more willing to embrace strict steps such as curfews, sweeping business closures and law enforcement assistance. “This epidemic has been a window into our politics,” said Larry Levitt, who leads health policy for the Kaiser Family Foundation, which has been tracking responses. “Particularly over the past couple of weeks, a political divide has emerged.”
Gas is cheap, but for many motorists there’s nowhere to go (AP) U.S. gasoline prices have dropped to their lowest levels in four years, and they are almost sure to go lower as oil prices plunge. Price-tracking services put the national average Monday around $2 a gallon. Some stations were spotted charging under a dollar. But don’t expect a stampede to the pumps. Demand is weak because so many Americans are under shelter-in-place rules and businesses have been shuttered because of the coronavirus outbreak. “For most Americans who are home practicing social distancing and not driving to work or taking their children to school, you are only filling up maybe once a week, maybe every couple of weeks,” said Jeanette Casselano, a spokeswoman for the AAA auto club. “You are not reaping the benefits.”
UK’s Prince Charles, 71, out of self-isolation and in good health (Reuters) British heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, who had tested positive for coronavirus, is out of self-isolation after seven days and is in good health, his spokesman said on Monday.
EasyJet to ground fleet (Washington Post) EasyJet, one of Europe’s largest airlines, said it would ground its entire fleet as demand collapses in the face of government restrictions on travel.
British government pledges $93 million to bring stranded Britons home (Washington Post) The British government on Monday pledged up to $93 million to bring Britons stranded overseas home, saying it would pay for chartered flights if needed. Like thousands of American travelers, many Britons have found themselves marooned abroad because of the coronavirus, suddenly struggling to get home as borders and airports close or commercial flights are canceled.
Amid border closures, European couples separated by coronavirus now meet and kiss across makeshift barriers (Washington Post) It took decades to make the European Union largely borderless, but when the coronavirus spread across Europe, many of the abandoned barriers were reinstated within days, temporarily separating couples, friends and colleagues. The sudden reemergence of frontiers in Europe has led to scenes that few people could have imagined only a month ago: couples kissing across border barriers, unable to cross to the other side that was just a footstep away not long ago. Standing along a makeshift border fence between Switzerland and southern Germany--a frontier that could easily be crossed during normal times--German resident Kati Sallai-Balog saw her partner for the first time in 12 days last Friday on the other side. “It’s absurd,” she told the local Südkurier newspaper. Crossing the border can be fined. “It’s a bit like in [East Germany],” another resident was quoted as saying by the German press agency, referring to the Berlin Wall.
Hungary passes coronavirus bill giving Orban sweeping powers (Washington Post) The Hungarian parliament Monday passed a bill allowing its populist prime minister Viktor Orban to govern unchallenged for an emergency period with no clear time limit. The government has argued the measures are necessary to fight the coronavirus outbreak, but rights groups say it effectively suspends democracy in the country by removing checks and balances on the executive and allowing Orban to govern by decree. The legislation is another cause of concern for the European Union, which already launched punitive proceedings against Hungary due to concerns over the slipping rule of law in the country.
Japan prepares stimulus (Foreign Policy) After initially saying coronavirus funds would be taken from existing budgets, Japan is now preparing a stimulus package from a supplementary budget that will be put together over the next 10 days. In a press conference, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his government would “lay out a stimulus package of unprecedented size that will exceed the one compiled after the Lehman crisis.”
North Korea says US clearly doesn’t want nuclear talks (AP) North Korea says “reckless remarks” by U--S-- Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made it clear that Washington has no intention of resuming nuclear talks and Pyongyang warned that it is now compelled to pay back “the pains the U--S-- has imposed on our people.”
Taliban attacks continue (NYT) The Taliban on Saturday attacked several provinces in northern Afghanistan, overrunning large parts of one district even as American diplomats expressed optimism that a peace process stalled over the release of prisoners was getting back on track. The insurgents launched major assaults in three northern province--in Kunduz, whose capital was overrun by the Taliban repeatedly in recent years, as well as in Faryab and Badakhshan. The fighting rages despite an appeal for a cease-fire on humanitarian grounds to slow the spread of the coronavirus across the country.
Crisis in the Sahel Becoming France’s Forever War (NYT) When France sent its forces into Mali, a former French colony, after armed Islamists took control of the West African country’s northern cities, their mission was supposed to last only a few weeks. That was seven years ago. Since then, the terrorist threat has spread across a vast sweep of land south of the Sahara known as the Sahel, and France’s counterterrorism fight has spread with it. As a result, more than 10,000 West Africans have died, over a million have fled their homes and military forces from West Africa and France have suffered many losses. And still, the battle is hardly finished.
Africa’s megacity Lagos braces for two-week coronavirus lockdown (Reuters) Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s announcement imposing a 14-day lockdown on sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest city triggered a last-minute rush on Monday as people hurried to stock up on food and other supplies.
Zimbabwe locks down to fight coronavirus amid economic crisis (Reuters) Zimbabwe began a 21-day nationwide lockdown on Monday, following South Africa in implementing tough anti-coronavirus measures that are likely to hurt an economy already suffering from hyperinflation and food shortages.

Inc.: 23 of the most successful introverts in history...
1. Albert Einstein
As one of the world's most recognized and revered physicists, Einstein has often been quoted as saying, “The monotony and solitude of a quiet life stimulates the creative mind.” Einstein received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 and is best remembered for developing the theory of relativity.
2. Rosa Parks
Parks became one of the most historically important figures in 1955 after refusing to give her seat up for a white man. In the introduction of her book Quiet: The Power Of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, Susan Cain states:
I had always imagined Rosa Parks as a stately woman with a bold temperament, someone who could easily stand up to a busload of glowering passengers. But when she died in 2005 at the age of 92, the flood of obituaries recalled her as soft-spoken, sweet, and small in stature. They said she was ‘timid and shy’ but had ‘the courage of a lion.’ They were full of phrases like ‘radical humility’ and ‘quiet fortitude.’
3. Bill Gates
The founder of Microsoft, philanthropist, and world's richest person, was once asked how to succeed in a predominantly extroverted world.
“Well, I think introverts can do quite well. If you're clever you can learn to get the benefits of being an introvert, which might be, say, being willing to go off for a few days and think about a tough problem, read everything you can, push yourself very hard to think out on the edge of that area. Then, if you come up with something, if you want to hire people, get them excited, build a company around that idea, you better learn what extroverts do, you better hire some extroverts (like Steve Ballmer I would claim as an extrovert) and tap into both sets of skills in order to have a company that thrives both in deep thinking and building teams and going out into the world to sell those ideas.”
4. Steven Spielberg
Even one of the most successful, wealthiest, and influential personalities in Hollywood is an introvert. Director and producer Steven Spielberg has admitted as much and says he would prefer to spend time getting lost into movies.
5. Sir Isaac Newton
One of the most important figures in science, his Principia formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation. Isaac Newton was known to be "a deeply introverted character and fiercely protective of his privacy."
6. Eleanor Roosevelt
Though she a shy and retiring individual, Eleanor Roosevelt "was a woman who gave 348 press conferences as First Lady, was a United Nations delegate, a human rights activist, a teacher, and a lecturer who averaged 150 speaking engagements a year throughout the 1950s."
7. Mark Zuckerberg
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg told The New York Times in 2010 that Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of the social network site, "is shy and introverted and he often does not seem very warm to people who don't know him, but he is warm." She added, "He really cares about the people who work here."
8. Larry Page
The co-founder of Google, Page became the search engine's CEO in 2011. Many believed that Page was an odd choice for CEO because he's "personally reserved, unabashedly geeky, and said to be introverted."
9. Al Gore
The former vice president, presidential candidate, and author of An Inconvenient Truth is another public figure who found success despite being an introvert.
10. Marissa Mayer
The current Yahoo! CEO may be well-known, but Mayer still believes in quiet leadership and has admitted that, "I'm just geeky and shy and I like to code…"
11. Abraham Lincoln
The introverted leadership skills of the 16th U.S. president have been studied often by researchers and educators because of his "geekiness," dignity, and quietness.
12. JK Rowling
The creator of Harry Potter came up with the idea of her most famous character while traveling from Manchester to London. Rowling recalls, "I had been writing almost continuously since the age of 6 but I had never been so excited about an idea before. To my immense frustration, I didn’t have a pen that worked, and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one... "
13. Warren Buffett
Known as the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett is known as one of the most successful introverts and businessmen in the world. According to Buffett, when he started out, he had the "intellect for business," but he felt he had to enroll in Dale Carnegie's, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" course of seminars, because he didn't have a business persona.
14. Mahatma Gandhi
Known for being the master of nonviolent resistance, Gandhi once said, “In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”
15. Hillary Clinton
The former First Lady, Secretary of State, and current presidential candidate isn't an extrovert like her husband Bill. This might be why some people believe that Clinton isn't that warm of a person.
16. Michael Jordan
His Airness is one of the greatest basketball players of all-time. He also happens to be one of the greatest introvert athletes.
17. Charles Darwin
The renowned scientists and author of The Origin of Species was a quiet type who enjoyed solitude.
18. Meryl Streep
Like many actors and actresses, Meryl Streep is a known introvert. However, Streep is a three-time Academy Award winner who is known for her preparation in becoming every character she has portrayed.
19. Elon Musk
The founder of PayPal, Space X, and Tesla has been open about how he went from an "introverted engineer" to being the next Steve Jobs.
20. Dr. Seuss
Arguably one of the greatest children's book authors of all-time wrote his stories alone, and according to Susan Cain, "was afraid of meeting the kids who read his books for fear they would be disappointed at how quiet he was."
21. Frederic Chopin
This world-renowned and inspirational composer was so introverted that he gave only about 30 public performances in his lifetime. Instead, he played for small groups of friends and made a living by selling his compositions and teaching piano. Chopin’s most quiet and troubled times have become known as his most productive composition periods.
22. Steve Wozniak
The Apple co-founder described his creative process in his book iWoz as follows:
“I'm going to give you some advice that might be hard to take.
That advice is: Work alone. Not on a committee. Not on a team.”
23. Barack Obama
The current president of the United States made history in 2008 by becoming the first African-American elected into the office. He's also a known introvert. In fact, columnist David Brooks stated in the The New York Times, "Being led by Barack Obama is like being trumpeted into battle by Miles Davis. He makes you want to sit down and discern."

How to get the most out of PageRank and boost rankings
There are 100s of signals that help Google understand and rank content and one signal in particular, PageRank, is often not fully taken advantage of on large scale websites.
Harnessing PageRank can provide the boost you need to gain traction in search results once you’ve covered some of the SEO basics, such as on-page optimisation.
But first, let’s define what PageRank is and how it works.
What is PageRank?
PageRank is a metric used by Google to determine the authority of a page, based on inbound links.
Unlike other ranking factors, Google used to explicitly give you a PageRank score of a webpage; however, Google decided to retire the public PageRank metric.
Although the public can no longer see PageRank scores, PageRank itself is a signal still used by Google, but many websites don’t efficiently harness its potential to boost rankings.
DYK that after 18 years we’re still using PageRank (and 100s of other signals) in ranking? Wanna know how it works?https://t.co/CfOlxGauGF pic.twitter.com/3YJeNbXLml
— Gary “鯨理” Illyes (@methode) February 9, 2017
How is PageRank calculated?
The methodology to calculate PageRank has evolved since the first introduction of Larry Page’s (a co-founder of Google) PageRank patent.
“Even when I joined the company in 2000, Google was doing more sophisticated link computation than you would observe from the classic PageRank papers”
Matt Cutts
The original PageRank calculation would equally divide the amount of PageRank a page held by the number of outbound links found on a given page. As illustrated in the diagram above, page A has a PageRank of 1 and has two outbound links to page B and page C, which results in both page B and C receiving 0.5 PageRank.
However, we need to add one more aspect to our basic model. The original PageRank patent also cites what is known as the damping factor, which deducts approx. 15% PageRank for every time a link points to another page as illustrated below. The damping factor prevents artificial concentration of rank importance within loops of the web and is still used today for PageRank computation.
PageRank and the reasonable surfer model
The way PageRank is currently worked out is likely far more sophisticated than the original calculation, a notable example of this would be the reasonable surfer model, which may adjust the amount of PageRank that gets allocated to a link based on the probability it will be clicked. For instance, a prominent link placed above the fold is more likely to be clicked on than a link found at the bottom of a page and therefore may receive more PageRank.
PageRank simplified
An easy way to understand how PageRank works is to think that every page has a value and the value is split between all the pages it links to.
So, in theory, a page that has attained quality inbound links and is well linked to internally, has a much better chance of outranking a page that has very little inbound or internal links pointing to it.
How to harness PageRank? If you don’t want to waste PageRank, don’t link to unimportant pages!
Following on from the previous explanation of PageRank, the first solution to harness PageRank is to simply not link to pages you don’t want to rank, or at the very least reduce the number of internal links that point to unimportant pages. For example, you’ll often see sites that stuff their main navigation with pages that don’t benefit their SEO, or their users.
However, some sites are setup in such a way that make it challenging to harness PageRank and below are some implementations and tips that can help you get the most out of PageRank in these kind of situations.
# fragments What is a # fragment?
The # fragment is often added at the end of a URL to send users to a specific part of a page (called an anchor) and to control indexing and distribution of PageRank.
How to use # fragments?
When the goal is to prevent a large number of pages from being indexed, direct and preserve PageRank, # fragments should be added after the most important folder in your URL structure, as illustrated in example A.
We have two pages:
Example A
www.example.com/clothing/shirts#colours=pink,black
URL with a # fragment
Example B
www.example.com/clothing/shirts,colours=pink,black
URL without a # fragment
There is unlikely to be much, if any, specific search demand for a combination of pink and black shirts that warrants a standalone page. Indexing these types of pages will dilute your PageRank and potentially cause indexing bloat, where similar variations of a page compete against each other in search results and reduce the overall quality of your site. So you’ll be better off consolidating and directing PageRank to the main /shirts page.
Google will consider anything that’s placed after a # fragment in a URL to be part of the same document, so www.example.com/clothing/shirts#colours=pink,black should return www.example.com/clothing/shirts in search results. It’s a form of canonicalisation.
if page.php#a loads different content than page.php#b , then we generally won’t be able to index that separately. Use “?” or “/”
— John (@JohnMu) February 22, 2017
We fold #a & #b together, for indexing too, so all signals come together.
— John (@JohnMu) April 5, 2017
Pros:
# fragment URLs should consolidate PageRank to the desired page and prevent pages you don’t want to rank from appearing in search results.
Crawl resource should focus on pages you want to rank.
Cons:
Adding # fragments can be challenging for most frameworks.
Using # fragments can be a great way to concentrate PageRank to pages you want to rank and prevent pages from being indexed, meaning # fragment implementation is particularly advantageous for faceted navigation.
Canonicalisation What is canonicalisation?
rel=”canonical” ‘suggests’ a prefered version of a page and can be added as an HTML tag or as an HTTP header. is often used to consolidate PageRank and prevent low-quality pages from being indexed.
How to use canonicalisation?
Going back to our shirt example…
We have two pages:
Example A
www.example.com/clothing/shirts/
Category shirt page
Example B
www.example.com/clothing/shirts,colours=pink,black
Category shirt page with selected colours
Page B type pages can often come about as a result of faceted navigation, so by making the URL on page B, mirror the URL on page A, you are signalling to search engines that page A is the prefered version and that any ranking signals, including PageRank, should be transferred to page A.
However, there are disadvantages with a canonicalisation approach as discussed below.
Pros:
Can transfer PageRank to pages you want to rank.
Can prevent duplicate/low-quality pages from being indexed.
Cons:
A canonical tag is a suggestive signal to search engines, not a directive, so they can choose to ignore your canonicalisation hints. You can read the following webmaster blog to help Google respect your canonicalisation hints.
Google has suggested that canonicals are treated like 301 redirects and in combination with the original PageRank patent, this implies that not all PageRank will pass to the specified canonical URL.
Even though canonicalised pages are crawled less frequently than indexed pages, they still get crawled. In certain situations, such as large-scale faceted navigation, the sheer amount of overly dynamic URLs can eat into your websites crawl budget, which can have an indirect impact on your site’s visibility.
Overall, if choosing a canonicalisation approach, be confident that Google will respect your canonicalisation suggestions and that you’ve considered the potential impact to your sites crawl budget if you have a large number of pages you want to canonicalise.
Make sure internal links return a 200 response code
Arguably one of the quickest wins in preserving PageRank is to update all internal links on a website so that they return a 200 response code.
We know from the original PageRank patent that each link has a damping factor of approx. 15%. So in cases where sites have a large number of internal links that return response codes other than 200, such as 3xx, updating them will reclaim PageRank.
As illustrated below, there is a chain of 301 redirects. Each 301 redirect results in a PageRank loss of 15%. Now imagine the amplified loss in PageRank if there were hundreds, or thousands of these redirects across a site.
This is an extremely common issue, but not exclusive, to sites that have undergone a migration. The exception to the rule of losing 15% PageRank through a 301 redirect is when a site migrates from HTTP to HTTPS. Google has been strongly encouraging sites to migrate to HTTPS for a while now and as an extra incentive to encourage more HTTPS migrations, 3xx redirects from HTTP to HTTPS URLs will not cause PageRank to be lost.
Download Screaming Frog for free and check out their guide for identifying internal links that return a non 200 response code.
Reclaiming PageRank from 404 pages
Gaining inbound links is the foundation for increasing the amount of PageRank that can be dispersed across your site, so it really hurts when pages that have inbound links pointing to them return a 404 error. Pages that return a 404 error no longer exist and therefore can’t pass on PageRank.
Use tools such as Moz’s Link Explorer to identify 404 pages that have accumulated inbound links and 301 redirect them to an equivalent page to reclaim some of the PageRank.
However, unless there is not an appropriate equivalent page to redirect these URLs to, avoid redirecting 404 pages to your homepage. Redirecting pages to your homepage will likely result in little, if any, PageRank being reclaimed, due to the differences in the original content and your homepage.
Things to avoid rel=”nofollow”
The use of is synonymous with an old-school SEO tactic, whereby SEO’s tried to ‘sculpt’ the flow of PageRank by adding to internal links that were deemed unimportant. The goal was to strategically manage how PageRank gets distributed throughout a website.
The attribute was originally introduced by Google to fight comment link spam, where people would try to boost their backlink profile by inserting links into comment sections on blogs, articles or forum posts.
This tactic has been redundant for many years now, as Google changed how worked. Now, PageRank sent out with every link is divided by the total amount of links on a page, rather than the amount of followed links.
However, specifically adding to a link will mean PageRank that does flow through will not benefit the destination page and thus result in PageRank attrition. Additionally, the attrition of PageRank also applies to URLs you’ve disallowed in your robots.txt file, or pages that have had a noindex tag in place for a while.
Embedded JavaScript links
Content that’s reliant on JavaScript has been shown to negatively impact organic search performance. Essentially, it’s an inefficient process for Google to render, understand and then evaluate client-side rendered content and some in the SEO industry believe it’s possible to sculpt PageRank by making unimportant internal links embedded JavaScript links.
I decided to ask John Mueller whether JavaScript embedded links receive less PageRank than links found in the HTML and he responded unequivocally.
yes
— John (@JohnMu) October 18, 2018
JavaScript SEO is a complex topic, where the dynamic is constantly evolving, and Google is increasingly getting better at understanding and processing JavaScript.
However, if you’re going to use a JavaScript framework, make sure that Google is able to fully render your content.
Conclusion
PageRank is still an influential ranking signal and preserving, directing and ultimately harnessing this signal should be apart of any plan when trying to boost your organic search visibility. Every website’s situation is unique, and a one size fits all approach will not always apply, but hopefully, this blog highlights some potential quick wins and tactics to avoid. How to get the most out of PageRank and boost rankings
There are 100s of signals that help Google understand and rank content and one signal in particular, PageRank, is often not fully taken advantage of on large scale websites.
Harnessing PageRank can provide the boost you need to gain traction in search results once you've covered some of the SEO basics, such as on-page optimisation.
Although the public can no longer see PageRank scores, PageRank itself is a signal still used by Google, but many websites don't efficiently harness its potential to boost rankings.
DYK that after 18 years we're still using PageRank (and 100s of other signals) in ranking? Wanna know how it works?https://t.co/CfOlxGauGF pic.twitter.com/3YJeNbXLml
— Gary "鯨理" Illyes (@methode) February 9, 2017

# fragments
What is a # fragment?
The # fragment is often added at the end of a URL to send users to a specific part of a page (called an anchor) and to control indexing and distribution of PageRank.
How to use # fragments?
When the goal is to prevent a large number of pages from being indexed, direct and preserve PageRank, # fragments should be added after the most important folder in your URL structure, as illustrated in example A.
We have two pages:
Example A
www.example.com/clothing/shirts#colours=pink,black
URL with a # fragment
Example B
www.example.com/clothing/shirts,colours=pink,black
URL without a # fragment
You wouldn’t want to have an indexed page that specifically promoted pink and black coloured shirts. There is unlikely to be much, if any, specific search demand for a combination of pink and black shirts, so you’ll be better off consolidating and directing PageRank to the main /shirts page.
Google will consider anything that's placed after a # fragment in a URL to be part of the same document, so www.example.com/clothing/shirts#colours=pink,black should return www.example.com/clothing/shirts in search results. It’s a form of canonicalisation.
if page.php#a loads different content than page.php#b , then we generally won't be able to index that separately. Use "?" or "/"
— John (@JohnMu) February 22, 2017
Canonicalisation
What is canonicalisation?
rel="canonical" ‘suggests’ a prefered version of a page and can be added as an HTML tag or as an HTTP header. rel="canonical" is often used to consolidate PageRank and prevent low-quality pages from being indexed.
How to use canonicalisation?
Going back to our shirt example...
We have two pages:
Example A
www.example.com/clothing/shirts/
Category shirt page
Example B
www.example.com/clothing/shirts,colours=pink,black
Category shirt page with selected colours
Page B type pages can often come about as a result of faceted navigation, so by making the rel="canonical" URL on page B, mirror the rel="canonical" URL on page A, you are signalling to search engines that page A is the prefered version and that any ranking signals, including PageRank, should be transferred to page A.
In certain situations, such as large-scale faceted navigation, the sheer amount of overly dynamic URLs can eat into your websites crawl budget, which can have an indirect impact on your site's visibility.
However, you’ll want to be confident that Google will respect your canonicalisation suggestions and that you've considered the potential impact to your sites crawl budget if you have a large number of pages you want to canonicalise.
Things to avoid
rel="nofollow"
The use of rel="nofollow" is synonymous with an old-school SEO tactic, whereby SEO’s tried to ‘sculpt’ the flow of PageRank by adding rel="nofollow" to internal links that were deemed unimportant. The goal was to strategically manage how PageRank gets distributed throughout a website.
The rel="nofollow" attribute was originally introduced by Google to fight comment link spam, where people would try to boost their backlink profile by inserting links into comment sections on blogs, articles or forum posts.
This tactic has been redundant for many years now, as Google changed how rel="nofollow" worked. Now, PageRank sent out with every link is divided by the total amount of links on a page, rather than the amount of followed links.
However, specifically adding rel="nofollow" to a link will mean PageRank that does flow through will not benefit the destination page and thus result in PageRank attrition. Additionally, the attrition of PageRank also applies to URLs you've disallowed in your robots.txt file, or pages that have had a noindex tag in place for a while.
Embedded JavaScript links
Content that's reliant on JavaScript has been shown to negatively impact organic search performance. Essentially, it’s an inefficient process for Google to render, understand and then evaluate client-side rendered content and some in the SEO industry believe it's possible to sculpt PageRank by making unimportant internal links embedded JavaScript links.
However, if you're going to use a JavaScript framework, make sure that Google is able to fully render your content.
Indexing these types of pages will dilute your PageRank and potentially cause indexing bloat, where similar variations of a page compete against each other in search results and reduce the overall quality of your site. So you’ll be better off consolidating and directing PageRank to the main /shirts page.
Google will consider anything that's placed after a # fragment in a URL to be part of the same document, so www.example.com/clothing/shirts#colours=pink,black should return www.example.com/clothing/shirts in search results. It’s a form of canonicalisation.
