Flow House in Toronto, Canada by Dubbeldam Architecture + Design
Dubbeldam Architecture + Design unveils Flow House, a semi-detached Victorian house in midtown Toronto that has been reconfigured for a creative couple and their children. The transformation of the 130-year-old home included adding additional living space on the back and top of the home, improving connections to the outdoors, and updating the interior and rear yards for contemporary living. The traditional front façade remains, while the interior is now a meaningful reflection of the family’s unique personalities, vocations, and shared experiences.

Though less than five meters wide, with an added area of only 230 square meters, the home now seems much larger through a strategy of compression and expansion. Narrowed interstitial spaces enclose, creating a feeling of constriction, then open to larger spaces with lofty ceilings. And there are moments of surprise and delight – the merging of interior and exterior spaces, the introduction of natural light in unexpected places, and the playful sculpting of elements that establish an organic quality to the home.
Referencing one homeowner’s profession as a ceramicist, the notion of tactility and craft permeates the home through materials, forms, patterns, and textures. Suggesting a complementary hybrid of Scandinavian and Mediterranean influences, the wood cabinetry, screens, and flooring in warm white oak are accented by concrete and Carrara marble sinks, antiqued brass fixtures, and hand-moulded clay pendants. A clean backdrop of white walls and shelving provides a blank canvas to showcase the family’s collection of art, tapestries, and sculpture from local artists, along with artefacts gathered during travels abroad and the owner’s ceramics. Colour animates the interstitial spaces of the home – terra cotta tiles are laid in a herringbone pattern in the entry foyer, and a wall of geometric cerulean blue tiles defines the bar between the kitchen and dining room.

Underpinned by an aesthetic of fluid contours – a deliberate contrast to the rectilinear floorplan – the house’s interior elements appear sculpted rather than built. The helical staircase connecting all four floors is a focal point that expresses the home’s sense of flow. Awash in natural light from the skylight above, the winding balustrade and natural oak treads cast shifting shadows throughout the day.

“Curvilinear forms are employed throughout," says firm principal, Heather Dubbeldam. "Arched openings between rooms incite anticipation as they frame views of what lies beyond, resonating with curved walls, display nooks, the kitchen island and banquette, further enhancing the house’s sculptural sensibility.”
In addition to utilizing the latest sustainable systems and materials to promote well-being, large windows and skylights provide abundant light, natural ventilation, and connections to the outdoors. Mahogany-framed, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors on the third floor provide access to a roof deck, while a similarly lofty door in the kitchen opens to the furnished back patio.

Similar spatial strategies continue in the design of the rear yard. The volumes of charcoal-coloured panels that comprise the new rear façade are stepped back on multiple planes to create a roof deck and recessed entrance. In the back garden, compression and expansion are further explored through narrowed planting beds that open to wider spaces designed for play, dining, and relaxation. The wooden pergola, brick pavers, and ochre outdoor furniture are a nod to the various temperate climates the family has experienced together. At the same time, the landscaping of lush plantings provides interest year-round.

A Pox Upon Us
Originally published on the Doomstead Diner on March 22, 2020
“Stupidity has a knack of getting its way; as we should see if we were not always so much wrapped up in ourselves” ― Albert Camus, The Plague
During the incursions of the Black Death, the bubonic plague that attacked Europe in waves during the 14th and 16th centuries, the rich have always taken pains to insure that sickness remains the province of the poor. Some things never change.
Plague doctors wore a beaked mask and carried a stick. During the 16th century, French royal physician Charles de Lorme is credited with having invented the bird-beak plague mask. The long, beaked mask was typically filled with sweet or strong-smelling herbs, such as wormwood, the main ingredient in absinthe, which were believed to filter out miasma, or bad air, thought at the time to spread plague.
As Jezebel reminds us, Rich People Have Always Been Assholes During Plagues. In the 14th century Black Death, which wiped out somewhere between 30 to 50 percent of Europe’s population, those who could afford were told “cito, longe, tarde:” “flee soon, go far, come back late.” As servants were left behind to clean the houses of an absent aristocracy, the swells and grandees got the hell out of town. Reports abound of those left in cities screaming while being enclosed alive in body bags bound for the plague pits.
The 21st century version of retreating to one’s Italian villa seems to be barricading oneself in a Hamptons mansion. The new court physician is the concierge doctor, and the new plague mask is the high-end, sold-out Urban Air Mask 2.0, miasma-blocking herbs replaced by “cutting-edge filter technology with timeless Scandinavian design,” the company’s website reads. Gwenyth Paltrow recently posted a selfie wearing the $65 modern-day plague mask en route to Paris, though doctors say they’re likely ineffective, as the masks are intended to prevent sick people from spreading coronavirus, not protect well people from catching it.
Our own rich are following the advice to flee and stay away, hiring private planes to avoid the miasma emanating from those who fly coach. The Rich Are Scrambling To Escape COVID-19 On Private Jets. And money is often no object.
The most wealthy among us are trying to get around flight bans with private jet flights as they are desperate to get into or home from Caribbean countries, many of which have partial or full international travel bans. .. These countries are home to many affluent expatriates. The money some of them spend on private jet flights is staggering. One round trip to Europe in a Gulfstream 550 jet from the United States with five passengers can easily cost the client six figures.
With the world being crippled in many ways by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ultra-wealthy still have places to be and airline options are not only becoming restrictive, they are dwindling. Rumors currently abound of private jet pilots, both from charter operations and private flight departments, being offered large bonuses to get into and out of Caribbean resort countries undetected and bypassing customs and port of entry requirements.
Yes, I know you have your so-called "rules," but this is ME we're talking about. And I'll pay you handsomely.
And you might wonder: Why are the rich and famous getting coronavirus tests while we aren't? It occurs to a couch-surfing peasant to wonder how elite athletes on NBA teams, rich actors and well-connected swells can get tested, when first responders and many presenting with obvious symptoms have been turned away.
Just kidding.
While the evasions and lubrications by the rich may stink as much as the flesh of rotting buboes, we'll need a plague mask to mask the stench of corruption emanating from Washington, DC this week.
Virus Vultures
On Thursday, Senators faced a massive scandal after multiple members revealed in public filings that they had sold large stock holdings after private briefings on the coronavirus outbreak. Senator Richard Burr Sold a Fortune in Stocks as G.O.P. Played Down Coronavirus Threat to the mere public. And Sen. Kelly Loeffler, she of the half-billion dollar net worth (the richest member of Congress), sold off seven figures worth of stock holdings after the same, private, all-senators meeting as Burr. Then, she bought stock in a telework software company. Later, as March unfolded, fear of the virus hammered U.S. equities for its largest loss in decades.
After they were briefed that the coronavirus crisis would be far worse than was publicly known, they dumped their personal stock market holdings while publicly insisting that things would be fine. Even while privately telling wealthyt constituents that it was going to be ugly. From the Times:
Senator Richard M. Burr sold hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of stock in major companies last month, as President Trump and others in his party were still playing down the threat presented by the coronavirus outbreak and before the stock market’s precipitous plunge.
The stocks were sold in mid-February, days after Mr. Burr, Republican of North Carolina and the chairman of the Intelligence Committee, wrote an opinion article for Fox News suggesting that the United States was “better prepared than ever before” to confront the virus. At least three other senators sold major stock holdings around the same time, disclosure records show.
No less a noted socialist than Fox News host Tucker Carlson, called for Burr’s resignation.
“He dumped his shares in hotel stocks so he wouldn’t lose money, and then he stayed silent,” Mr. Carlson said during his show on Thursday night. “Maybe there is an honest explanation for what he did. If there is, he should share it with us immediately. Otherwise, he must resign from the Senate and face prosecution for insider trading.”
Three other senators also sold major holdings around the same time.
It makes perfect sense to believe, does it not, that the richest single member of Congress, a former investment banker CEO worth $500M and married to the NY stock exchange president, a Senator with inside knowledge and ability to manipulate markets, has no idea what her portfolio is doing.
These moves place Burr and Loeffler in direct violation of the STOCK Act of 2012, which specifically made it illegal for members of Congress to trade equities based on any secret information received as part of their jobs.
For their parts, Burr and Loeffler have asked for Ethics Committee investigations to, wait for it, "clear their names." Which, since the secretive committee meets behind closed doors, means waiting until the shitmist from the scandal settles and it's time to start pounding the phones to raise money for re-election.
No idea at all. Baseless attack.
The Times article continues:
In a series of posts on Twitter, Mr. Burr accused NPR of twisting his comments into a “tabloid-style hit piece.” He argued that the report made him look duplicitous for sharing information at a publicly advertised event that was consistent with the message members of the Trump administration were then trying to promulgate. He did not address his stock sales.
Of course he didn't.
You Can't Have One.
This is the above-referenced selfie of Gwyneth Paltrow, actress-cum-celebrity goopifier, who has built a second career positing that illness can be prevented by cold baths, energy healing and making better lifestyle choices, wearing a ventilator. And not just any ventilator. From the looks of it, an Airnum in Onyx Black. And don't ask, peasant: sold out.
Remember that we pissed away two months of lead time because Trump didn't want "the numbers" to harsh the stock market and thus his re-election chances. For months, Trump has his band of grifters and right wing media enablers have said that it was nothing to worry about, and they had it contained.
Pete Hegseth said “the more I learn about this, the less there is to worry about.” Jeanine Pirro asserted that mainstream-media coverage “doesn’t reflect reality.” Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham accused the non-cult press as “panic pushers” stirring up “mass hysteria.” And Trish Regan at Fox Business accused the “liberal media of using the coronavirus “to impeach the president. That last outburst was apparently bad enough to rouse Rupert Murdoch from his crypt to take her off the air.
What a difference a few days, and a few thousand active coronavirus cases in the U.S., can make. Both Trump and FNC have changed their tune regarding the significance of the virus. And Trump, prevented from staging his Nuremberg rallies to bathe in the adulation of his cult, has taken his act of vindictiveness, press attacks, and racism to the White House briefing room. It is a failing of the corporate media that they continue to live broadcast these exercises in propaganda. During a pandemic, disinformation costs lives.
It’s certainly true that health workers and those who have already contracted the virus should be getting masks before celebrities, considering we’re entering into global mask shortage that will make it even more difficult to contain a rapidly spreading public health crisis.
But Paltrow isn’t modeling a mask out of deep concern for public health; she’s posting because she’s beginning to panic. Covid-19 definitely isn’t the end times, but it’s a useful indication of what end times might look like: All our favorite celebrities, like the rest of the idle rich, tossing away their public postures and scrambling to spend as much money as necessary to make sure that they stay safe.

Barbarian Office, New York
I love unconventional workspaces, and this one, designed by Clive Wilkinson Architects for The Barbarian Group, is one of the most unique and creative I’ve ever seen. Plus, it reminds me a little bit of Metropol Parasol in Seville.
However, their new office in New York is an architectural tour de force, a large open space where everything revolves around an endless plywood table that snakes its way through the room, creating all sorts of meeting arrangements and storage opportunities below.
The goal was to create an environment that would resonate with their brand identity while fostering communication and collaboration among employees, and the result is more than amazing.
Food52 Office, New York City
Famous cooking site Food52′s home in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City looks absolutely fabulous. The office is a warm and bright free-flowing space, where custom furnishings and IKEA goods stand side by side with flea market finds and local art.
Sustainable Sala Verde lighting fixtures, Waterworks Kitchen cabinetry, and sleek Electrolux appliances decorate the test kitchen, where all their immaculately presented dishes come to life. The meeting and conference rooms look like cozy living areas, and the entire space is bursting with character and personal touches.
Additionally, Food52 employees get their job done at big, stylish desks that encourage collaborative work, and cook their meals in a cool industrial-style kitchen, complete with white subway tiles and rustic shelves made from reclaimed wood.

Outdoor Mobile Workplace in the Dutch Countryside
Setting up your office in the middle of nature can be a difficult task, but thanks to The Tipping Point Foundation, who invented the KantoorKaravaan, you can now work off-the-grid in the Dutch countryside.
Designed to accommodate up to 35 people, the second-hand trailers that make up the KantoorKaravaan come equipped with electricity, coffee machines, and Wi-Fi. The mobile workplace travels to various locations around the country, including parks and nature reserves, so make sure you check out their next destination.
Twitter Global HQ, San Francisco
Occupying two floors of an iconic Art Deco building in Market Square, San Francisco, Twitter’s global headquarters has a cool nature theme, with lots of wood, tree branches emerging from the walls, and a huge roof terrace overlooking the city skyline.
Workspaces range from formal glass-enclosed conference rooms to quirky open office workstations, all filled with natural light and understated rustic elegance. Designed by IA Interior Architects in collaboration with Lundberg Design, the office includes a sprawling cafeteria with different themed food areas, a yoga studio, fitness room, and two game rooms.

A Writers’ Cottage in Oslo, Norway
You should never underestimate the power of an inspiring workspace, especially when you are a professional writer.
Writers’ Cottage is a project designed by Jarmund/Vigsnæs AS Arkitekter MNAL and was intended to serve as both an alternative to a cottage in the countryside and a workspace for two Oslo-based writers.
A relaxation area and a cozy reading nook complement the creative interiors, which also include an ingenious stair that doubles as a bookshelf. Both the desk and the north facing façade are made entirely of glass, giving the illusion that the space is elevated above the surrounding landscape.

Haruki Murakami’s Personal Writing Space
I’m a big fan of Haruki Murakami. I love the way he incorporates music and mystery in his novels, and I particularly enjoyed the Norwegian Wood and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Now, however, we’re talking about where today’s most famous Japanese novelist works his magic.
Surprisingly, Murakami’s home-based desk is more normal than one would expect from a best-selling author and perennial Nobel Prize contender. It is a tiny, intimate, and honest space that speaks a lot about his habits and personality.
His writing desk is teeming with perfectly sharpened yellow pencils and souvenirs collected from his travels around the world, including a wooden foot with a spider from Laos, a Scandinavian marble stone with a wasp, and a coffee mug he bought during his trip to Switzerland. Also part of the décor are a couple of porcelain figures and a baseball figurine of Yasuhiro “Ryan” Ogawa, a young player from his home team.
The Fresh Exchange Office
Let’s take a peek into the home studio of designers Megan Gilger and her husband Mike from The Fresh Exchange. Helped by Arrowhead design / fabrication company and In Situ studio, the couple managed to create a light-filled, minimalist space where they feel relaxed and inspired, letting their creative ideas flow and flourish.
Featuring a long floating desk, natural open shelving, and smart lighting by SolaTubes, this workspace is Scandinavian simplicity at its best. Everything is exactly how it should be - white, clean, and functional, with embellishments and accessories kept to a minimum; just a cool ‘50s inspired couch and a nice Pottery Barn rug to break the monotony and add a personal touch.
Bright Scandinavian Workspace with Antique Desk
Housed in a 73 sqm apartment in Gothenburg, Sweden, which I found via Alvhem Mäkleri och Interiör, this splendid Scandinavian workspace is refreshingly light and airy. Bleached floors and white walls create a sense of space and serenity, while the high ceilings, beautiful oversized windows, and period details add a sense of grandeur to the scene.
A refined mix of old and new, aesthetics, and functionality, the work area features an antique dark blue desk, a sleek industrial-inspired table lamp, and a modern designer office chair.
Cozy Wooden Studio in the Garden
An award-winning architectural project, the Hackney Shed is an ingenious garden office conceived by London-based design studio Office Sian.
The sustainable wooden structure - built to a limited budget and timescale - is situated in the Hackney area of London and features retractable oak framed doors that open onto the garden. The cozy workspace is lined with library bookshelves and lit with natural light coming through a hidden skylight.
Weebly’s Headquarters in San Francisco
Designed by Huntsman Architectural Group, Weebly’s headquarters in San Francisco’s South Park neighborhood boasts a gym, a cocktail bar, and a soundproof jam room. The design, although sleek and contemporary, is still very much connected to the building’s history and its uses over the years. Inside, the variety of spaces and work settings is outstanding, from a dining area for 200 to stylish, glass-enclosed conference rooms, chic interview rooms, and fun sit-to-stand desks.
Other impressive features include a resident chef, DJ booth, gaming area, laundry facility, a nursing room for new mothers, and the so-called “secret room” – a speakeasy-inspired space decorated with antique leather furniture, velvet wallpaper, and exposed-filament lighting.

Google Tel Aviv Office
Google has some the coolest workspaces around, and their stunningly designed office in Tel Aviv is no exception. Designed by award-winning studio Camenzind Evolution in collaboration with Setter Architects and Studio Yaron Tal, the 8,000 sqm space spreads over 8 floors of the Electra Tower in central Tel Aviv, offering spectacular city views.
Each level is individually styled, but all take inspiration from the vivid local culture. Interiors are decorated with orange trees and special features such as Lego and music rooms, a fully-equipped gym, or a wonderful rooftop deck overlooking the Mediterranean that keeps employees inspired, energized, and in love with their jobs.

Sailing Catamaran Turned Floating Coworking Space
People have different ideas of what makes a great workplace, especially freelancers who can get their job done from anywhere across the globe. However, I think everyone, not just digital nomads, will agree that working along a group of creative, like-minded individuals while sailing the open seas just can’t be beaten. Coboat, an 82 ft retrofitted sailing catamaran, combines sailing and working into one of the most amazing and stimulating coworking environments out there.
Equipped with solar panels, wind generator, and 24/7 internet connection, the mobile office provides comfortable shared accommodation, food, and flexible workspaces for 20 location-independent professionals at a time.
G Adventures’ Hip UK-Themed Office in London
Designed by Area Sq, G Adventures’ new office in London, called The Summit, is packed with lovely features and UK-themed décor.
The kitchen gives the feeling of an English garden; meeting rooms take inspiration from James Bond and the British Royalty; and private calls are made from iconic London red phone boxes.
Custom made furnishings and quirky design elements such as thrones, furry baddie cats, and UK flag carpets decorate the playful workspace, creating a friendly, visually inspiring environment where the employees of this Canada-based adventure travel agency feel connected to the company and enjoy coming to work every day.
Google Amsterdam Offices
Designed by studio D/DOCK, Google’s newly refurbished headquarters in Amsterdam pays homage to the garage where Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded the company in 1998.
Complete with meeting rooms, video booths, micro kitchens, and a 70-seat auditorium, the office is teeming with quirky design elements and amenities. The design features lots of exposed brick, cool graffiti walls, and ingenious light fixtures that resemble cardboard boxes, but it also incorporates plenty of traditionally Dutch details to give the space a cool local vibe.

Neat Office Space Accented with Messages and Marvel Comics
Neat, stylish, and full of character. That’s how I would describe the headquarters of Dekoratio Branding & Design Studio in Budapest.
Created by local designer and visual artist Kiss Miklos, the 100 square meter office provides an inspiring and enjoyable atmosphere for its employees, while reflecting the company’s ethos through the interplay of innovative design, typography, and comics.
There are playful details at every turn, from the meeting table that resembles a big Pantone Palette to the colorful comic illustrations that adorn the crisp white walls to the strategically placed letter-shaped bookshelves that display cool inspirational messages such as “Believe in BETTER” - a sign which morphs into “Believe in Beer” once the door slides across it.
A Filmmaker’s Stimulating Cinematic Laboratory
A project by Tom Kundig from Seattle-based studio Olson Kundig Architects, The Brain is a striking cinematic laboratory designed for a filmmaker. The 14,280 cubic-foot building is made of glass and cast-in-place concrete, and features interior structures crafted from hot-rolled steel sheets.
The studio, which works as both a playroom and an inspiring workspace, has a raw, industrial feel and is packed with quirky touches such as a fireman’s pole and a steel mezzanine that resembles a treehouse.

Blonde Robot’s Pub Inspired Office
Blonde Robot, an Australian based importer and distributor of consumer electronics, commissioned Mr. Mitchell interior designers to create the perfect office for their business. Inspired by their clients’ fondness for beer establishments with a slightly industrial feel, they managed to deliver unique, characterful interiors, infused with recycled vintage furnishings and whimsical touches.
Once a cold industrial concrete space, Blonde Robot’s brand new headquarters looks more like a cool, relaxing pub than a commercial office. In addition to 13 chic workstations, the space features a boardroom, a lounge, and a laid-back bar area (staff kitchen), complete with beer tap, beer keg, and fridge. Other notable design elements include a pair of Art Deco doors, an array of industrial style lamps and pendants, as well as a spectacular graffiti mural by Melbourne artist Ki.
Stockholm Strip Club Turned Flexible Office Facility
In search for a new studio and office facility for Studioverket, designers Toki Drobnjakovic and Per Sundberg (Per & Toki) acquired a former underground strip club and transformed it into an inspired, flexible coworking space called the Subterranean Concrete Orgy.
With the help of concrete producer Butong, they managed to create a space of “homogeneous diversity” by using a groundbreaking type of concrete sealed air bubble casting. The interiors are full of ingenuity and one-of-a-kind details such as concrete pendant lamps, a living wall where plants and herbs emerge from popped bubbles, a staircase made of hexagonal concrete leaves, and a fanciful sculpture of a girl that seems trapped in the wall, designed by movie producer Erik Liss.
Superette’s Headquarters in Takapuna
With four retail stores and an online shop, Superette is one of the top style destinations in Australasia, and their office, housed in the city’s former post office, is no less fashionable and creative. Fun wallpapers and inspiring quotes adorn the walls, while a mix of soft, luxe materials and rough details add character to the bright spaces.
Photography by Larnie Nicolson
Presslabs’ Headquarters in Timisoara
This nifty IT office is located inside an 18th-century heritage building in Timisoara, Romania and is teeming with fun, creative details.
Inspired by the staff’s hobbies, the two themed meeting spaces have been named the Snowboard Room and the Ski Room, while the Sailing Area – a space dedicated to temporary office desks – has a cool maritime motif.
Old Warehouse Converted Into Unique Collaborative Studio
Housed in a former lima bean factory in Old Town Irvine, SND CYN Studios is a collaborative workspace shared by a variety of professionals, including artists, designers, and photographers.
A brainchild of Ty Mattson from California-based design firm Mattson Creative - which also has its headquarters here, the office is an inspiring, design-forward environment where creative professionals from different fields can interact and develop their work while soaking in the great artistic vibe.
Paying tribute to the original warehouse, the design is a clever, harmonious mix of vintage industrial and modern mid-century aesthetics with lots of authentic exposed beams. Unique artwork, lima bean-producing paraphernalia, and exquisite designer pieces are everywhere, and each space is brimming with character and individuality.

Where the Artists of Softheads Work Their Magic
Located inside Palau Mercader, in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, Softheads’ office is trendy, playful, and in line with the firm’s vision of taking taxidermy to a whole new, friendly level.
Resembling hunting trophies, their imaginative, textile-based objects are handmade and locally produced. Needless to say, their new office - conceived by local designer and founder of Colapso, Susana Piquer - is as ingenious as their original creations. It comprises a workshop area decorated with unique pieces by Softheads, an office, a showroom, and a relaxing meeting space furnished with sun loungers.
Even Astra, the creative director’s dog, has its own stylish wood house in this beautifully designed multi-use facility.

Bedroom Design Ideas in Singapore
New HDB flats are being built every year in Singapore, with families and couples moving into their new homes. Flat sizes are however, shrinking smaller and smaller due to our rising need for housing.
The bedroom, where you spend on average 1/3 of your life in, is also getting tinier, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a stylish and beautiful design for a good night’s rest. In fact, due to the compact area, planning the space becomes even more important to make sure you can fit in your bed, wardrobe, desk without looking claustrophobic. A good interior designer will also add elements to create the illusion of space even with our limited area.
The following HDB Bedroom designs in Singapore show that despite our shrinking flat sizes, we can still achieve a chic look for the 1 room where you spend the most amount of time in at home.
A rich color scheme palette of teal and gold, the enclosed bed area distinctively separates each component of the bedroom, ensuring a cleaner and neater feel. The design almost borders on futuristic too, giving a cosy night’s sleep – couples will love it. This unique concaved elevated platform bed is truly a one-of-a-kind design in Singapore that is rarely seen. A full walk-in wardrobe is also conveniently constructed right beside the bed enclave with a window within for natural light to shine through, as well as making the wardrobe more airy and less claustrophobic.
Using warm fluorescent lighting with elements of tan wood, this simple bed room exudes warmth and cosiness without much distractions. An efficient use of the limited room space combines the horizontal study table to the side of bed, which also links all the way up to the ceiling acting as shelving for any books or memorabilia. The perfect environment for a teenager to nurture his studies.
This room is a stylish fashionista’s dream come true. Not only is there a full length mirror and a humongous 3-door wardrobe that fits more than my lifetime of clothings bought, the LED lighted dresser will make you feel like a movie star while you apply your makeup.
Ample display cabinets for storing branded bags, clothing and accessories also accompany this swanky dresser table for the fashionable independent woman – A modern queen’s bedroom.
Decked out in basic black and whites, this modern monochrome bedroom smartly utilizes a rotating wall to share the mounted flat screen TV with the lounge area as well as the bedroom. Young couples can enjoy shows on the bed or chill out in the living room sofa while having friends over.
The glass walk-in wardrobe, when paired with similarly colored clothings, adds to the design and appeal of the room, creating a more spacious environment while showing off the owner’s great fashion sense.
Only the bare essentials are featured in this very minimalist Scandinavian-inspired bedroom. With a platform built below the bed, you don’t really need to purchase a bedframe to complete the entire look. Have more privacy while dolling up your face with this split wardrobe bedroom. By creating the wardrobe in the split wall, essentially a little snug walk-in wardrobe is created in this limited room space without having to hack down the walls of the room.
Accessibility and practicality are melded together in this bedroom suited for single young adults to inhabit. The wall’s side is also finished with similar wooden panels to match the wood flooring for an earthy and complimentary concept.
A textured brick wall with randomly colored segments adds to the rustic sensation of this bedroom while still maintaining a simplistic design without being too boring. And yes, a flat screen TV Simple lines on the walls create elegant patterns of symmetry rather than a dull plain room. A small bedroom no doubt, the long lines help make the room look more lengthy and wide as the eyes are drawn down these wall lines. The ceiling fan comes with a built-in LED light to give dual-purpose and a more compact use of top space.
The intimate dresser table built beside the wardrobe is suitable for the individual living here, with the large mirror again giving an illusion of more depth of space despite the limited area. mounted on said brick wall facing the bed is functional as well as ornamental.
This huge walk-in wardrobe comes built with black framed glass doors that can be closed to keep the bed area cooler when the air-conditioning is turned on. Even with the doors to the wardrobe shut, the glass created the illusion of ample space. With this wardrobe design, there is no need to hack down the walls of the room to carve out a section.
Another bedroom design engineered to make a small room look more spacious, the various concealed LED lights at strategic edges create just that effect. 6 Sleek Studios with Glass Walled Bedrooms
If you’re used to suburban sprawl, the idea of living in a studio apartment can be daunting. This type of urban oasis does not have space for an entire home office, a yoga room, or maybe even a bathtub. However, for the right person or couple, studios can be plenty of space. One way to create the illusion of more space and privacy is to add interior walls. The studios featured in this post all have glass walled bedrooms that not only separate the sleeping area from the main living spaces but do so without creating a claustrophobic cave. The glass walls are a beautiful, minimalist design element that let light pass through will still creating the separation that the homeowner might want. Let’s look inside.
Visualizer: Hoàng Long The first studio featured here is a stunning tribute to Scandinavian design elements and the power of the color white when paired with plenty of natural light.
The main living space uses white walls and subtly gray chevron striped flooring, plus just a hint of exposed brick to create a cohesive and modern look.
A small dining area uses a simple round table and Eames-style dining chairs to create a welcoming spot to have breakfast or share a drink with friends.
Two windows in the main living space let plenty of natural light stream in, using no heavy coverings or blinds.
Like other Scandinavian dining rooms this one does not get cluttered up with extra fabric, furniture, or excessive color.
In the bedroom, white still reigns. Pops of green from a Swiss cheese plant are a reminder of the importance of nature in any home.
The IKEA Krusning Lampshade is a modern accessory that can diffuse a flattering light in the bedroom once the sun goes down.
Scandinavian bedrooms frequently use white and natural wood as seen here. Keeping the same color palette as the main living room is particularly important here because of the glass wall.
The design is entirely cohesive, but soft gray curtains make it easy to close the bedroom off when guests come to visit and a little extra privacy is necessary.
Visualizer: Thao Nguyen A design does not have to rely on bright white everywhere to keep the minimal, cozy Scandinavian tradition. This next studio uses swaths of white but also some lovely earthen tones to great effect.
In the living room, simple lines and varying heights — from a low entertainment center to a high shelf — keep interest without seeming cluttered.
The industrial style lighting in the dining area is unobtrusive and simple.
Further, the Scandinavian style chairs have a certain simple warmth to them.
The chair design unifies the space by using the same look in this workspace. In true form to Scandinavian workspaces, a lot of light wood and natural light is used here.
The modern beanbag chair in a deep plum color is a nice reminder that a home is for more than function — comfort and fun are essential.
Architect: Xicorra We only get a brief glimpse into this beautiful modern studio, starting with a sleek gray chaise and recessed overhead lighting.
A bright, spacious bedroom is enclosed by simple glass walls that nearly disappear into the broader landscape of the house.
In the dining area, modern dining chairs do not leave a lot of space for entertaining, but then again who would want to share the Arne Jacobsen Drop Chair.
Visualizer: Studio PINE This Kiev, Ukraine apartment measure 66 square meters (710 square feet) is another example of design that is quite minimal, simple, and beautiful.
The main living space features a large, plush sofa and a simple, low coffee table plus some built in shelving.
Natural light streams in from a big window, making for a comfortable place to get a bit of work done just under the window.
Dining room pendants, in this case the Secto Pendant make for a sleek addition to the dining area.
A bedroom made up in neutrals like light wood, gray, and cream is very soothing.
The glass wall lets in light, or can keep it out with the use of heavy gray curtains.
Visualizer: Concretica Design The most colorful entry in this collection is surely this stunning pink living room, which includes a large Fiddle Leaf Fig.
Between the lovely pink furnishings the designer leaves a perfect space for unique coffee tables like this wood and striped option.
The pink chairs look cute enough to eat.
The colors are toned down a but in the bedroom, with a wood platform bed and pretty crown molding being the main decor.
A glamorous bathroom with a gilded mirror and ring light finished the tour of this home. Simple soap and lotion dispensers perch easily on the unique sink.
Visualizer: Concretica Design The final studio in this post is another example of sleek, modern design that pays homage to the 1980s as well as midcentury stylings. In this type of living room, unique floor lamps are always a good choice, such as the AJ Floor Lamp that is tucked behind the crescent-shaped sofa.
The dining area also makes use of unique lighting with the clustered bulbs that hand over the circular table.
The mint-colored dining chairs and deep red cabinetry show how unique color combinations can work well together.
Indoor house plants are perfect for any era as these oversized versions can attest.
In the bedroom, a pink headboard gives the small space a warm, tropical feel.
Plush green velvet seating adding touchable texture that’s just bold enough.
A circular mirror and luscious burgundy tiles make this bathroom really stunning, and give a tiny nod to the 80s.

4 Bright Studio Apartments With Creative Bedroom Placement
Deciding how to handle the sleeping situation is one of the most challenging aspects of designing a studio apartment, requiring a lot of forethought to match the lifestyle preferences of the resident while working around any architectural or floor plan obstacles that can limit the available options. And that’s even before taking decor into consideration! This post looks at four compact studio apartments, each one taking a different creative approach – both in terms of bedroom design and overall aesthetics. A few of them even include floor plans for your own apartment layout inspiration.
Visualizer: Lauri Brothers Let’s start with a fun compact studio with a color scheme based around a Pantone palette of minty turquoise. Like the fresh springtime hues used within, the apartment’s layout fosters a breezy atmosphere that at once relaxes and energizes.
The open layout begins with a combination living room and office, separated from the dining and kitchen area by a breakfast bar clad in translucent glass blocks.
Glass elements play a tremendous role in this design. Mirrors, blocks, and windows work together to bathe the interior with light and erase the boundaries between functional spaces.
In the corner, a cozy lounge space offers respite from a long day of work. The hammock is an especially enviable addition, soaking up the skyline view from the impressive floor-to-ceiling windows.
Rather than hiding away in some corner, the bed actually occupies a central volume in the center of the living space, shielded from the sofa by a wall with televisions mounted on either side.
The kitchen’s use of glass blocks and white surfaces helps balance the heaviness of the brick accent wall. A layer of transparent glass catches splatters from the sink and stove to make cleanup a breeze.
A series of three simple kitchen pendant lights trace sharp lines across the ceiling thanks to the precise decorative routing of their cords – a contemporary touch.
The entryway balances comfort and functionality, taking advantage of its roomy proportions with a handy bench and tidy shoe rack.
And finally, a quick look at the bathroom, decorated with an even more subdued shade of mint.
Visualizer: Vatman Studio At 45 square meters in size, this studio apartment makes fantastic use of its limited floor plan without sacrificing the individuality of each functional area. Each area feels like its own little “room” but doesn’t feel too closed off from the rest of the home thanks to the low-profile furniture and partial walls.
The designers chose Scandinavian influence as the overall unifying theme, but each room features its own unique flavor. For example, the living room glows with bright neon accents while the kitchen feels sophisticated in gold.
Named for the bouncy rhythms of jazz musician John Coltrane, the Coltrane Suspension Lamp series adds a sense of life and movement above the kitchen island. Many dining pendant lights have just the right form to use above counter tops.
A touch of greenery in the living room and bedroom help to bring the outdoors in. The plants in the taller pots are the ZZ plant, or Zamioculcas zamiifolia, also known as the “eternity plant” because of its reputation as one of the easiest indoor house plants to care for.
The bedroom enjoys an open visual plane while preserving insulation from sound thanks to its glass boundary. Sliding curtains offer privacy when needed.
While the rest of the interior is bright white and airy, the area around the front door makes for a dark and dramatic entrance.
Designed by Tom Dixon, these large coat pegs are easier on clothing compared to small hooks that can stretch or deform delicate fabrics.
Here’s a look at the apartment from a bird’s eye view. If you enjoy getting inspiration from 3D layouts like these, make sure to check out our compilation of 50 studio apartment floor plans for even more ideas.
Visualizer: K Band A little different from the previous two homes, this apartment occupies 42 square meters in Kiev, a clean and simple interior that uses natural elements to foster a sense of relaxation and comfort. Because the apartment was designed with a young couple in mind, most furniture remains in the middle of the floor plan to accommodate a freer flow of foot traffic.
Decor remains spare. The few accents that adorn the home remain minimalist and modern just like the interior.
While instruments and their peripherals can often add clutter to smaller homes, this interior puts them on display and turns them into music themed decor.
Dining and storage separate the kitchen from the living room. The espresso station is a nice touch, making it easier to grab a quick cup while working or playing at the table.
A wooden accent wall with built-in shelves helps protect the bedroom’s privacy without cutting off the living space from the window’s generous flood of sunlight.
Geometric decor seems to be a popular motif for minimalist bedrooms. This origami-inspired crane would be easy to recreate with a small roll of colorful painter’s tape.
Check out this boundary between the entrance and the rest of the home! A sharp transition from wood to white-on-white brightens the space despite its distance from any windows.
In fact, the white surfaces actually make the rest of the living room look brighter too.
The kitchen mostly follows the wood and white theme, but also adds a border of gray tiles for contrast.
The gray helps hide the shadows cast by the kitchen’s recessed position.
Using the same tiles as the kitchen, the bathroom also keeps things simple and dramatic with a grayscale theme.
The vanity is enclosed by the same light wood found elsewhere in the home. A bar of recessed lighting keeps things bright.
What an adorable litter box niche! With a hole shaped like a cat’s head, it helps hide the box while remaining easy to open and clean.
Visualizer: Zinaida Zagurska And finally, a compact apartment that bucks the trend of minimalism and embraces a comfortable homey aesthetic that showcases the personality of the resident. Numerous instruments serve as music themed home decor, just as fun to use as they are to look at.
One room that does remain relatively minimalistic is the kitchen – aside from a few plants atop the counters, most of the contents is purely functional.
Tucked away from the rest of the home, the bedroom hides behind a slatted interior wall with curtains for privacy.
Its walls are clad in wood, the lighting low and warm for relaxation.
A large graphic mural adds a touch of industrial character to the room.
And the brick wall, though it’s painted white, continues the industrial theme.
