Whumptober 2024 - Day 26
Hehehehe time to see modern war mage Mariano in action as the lamb!
TWs: aftermath of torture and waterboarding
Nightmares | Breakfast Table | Parting Words of Regret | “I’m haunted by the lies that I have loved, the actions I have hated.”
"Lumen!" Dimitri shouted, voice tight with desperation. He strained against the bars that held them in their cell, one arm reaching between them to try to get to the youngest war mage. The others strained similarly in the chains that kept them close to the walls.
Mariano was dragged down the hallway between two guards, not even able to lift his head. Blood dripped steadily to the floor, and his hair hung straight and limp, matted together and dripping with water. Little, crackling sobs eked out, just loud enough to be heard.
The men sneered as they got close. "What did you do to him?" Dimitri snarled, only to flinch back with a yelp when they swung their batons at his arm, forcing him away from the door.
They didn't linger when they opened the cell and dropped Mariano back inside to cough and wheeze on the floor. Dimitri scrambled over, pulling Mariano into his arms and cradling his head close. "I've got you, it's okay, it's over now." He said, hearing the guards laugh. "They won't touch you again."
Mariano sobbed louder, voice cracking as one hand tangled into Dimitri's sleeve. He curled in tight against Dimitri, trembling hard. When Dimitri hugged him tighter, he angled his face like he was trying to hide in bleach-fried hair.
In a voice hoarse from water and coughing, just barely loud enough to be heard, Mariano spoke. "I know where they're keeping the intel." He sounded steady even as he trembled. "No guards in four hours. Two are sick."
Dimitri settled back, aware of the cameras still on them. The hand at Mariano's back slipped up to hide under his hair. He tapped a finger against the back of Mariano's neck. N-I-G-H-T-M-A-R-E.
"Understood, sir." Mariano whispered back. "I'll tell the others." And he would. When he crawled to be by them, he'd pass it all on. By the time they were done executing that particular escape, nothing would be standing.

"I See by Your Outfit" was written by John D.F. Black, who served as Associate Producer on ten episodes of Star Trek. He also penned the episode "The Naked Time" and co-wrote its sequel, the Next Generation episode "The Naked Now," with D.C. Fontana (who asked to have her name removed from the final script when she disagreed with changes made to her original draft, and is credited as "J. Michael Bingham"). Under the pseudonym "Ralph Wills," he also co-wrote the Next Generation episode "Justice."

Whumperless Whump Event - Day 11
Ohhh I just had such a good idea for this one, I needed to
TWs: panic attacks
ALTERNATE: Panic attack
A clatter woke Laredo from his deep sleep. The room was pitch dark. He knew, the way that they all did, that it was two in the morning and that noise had come from the kitchen.
It had been a glass.
Carefully, silently, Laredo rolled out of bed and crept out of the room. The hallway was dark, with light spilling out of kitchen and into the living room. As Laredo got closer, Izan's hunched frame came into view. He was leaning on the kitchen counter, hair trembling in the glow of the nightlight they'd put up, one hand was raised to his mouth.
"Izan?"
Laredo yawned as he approached, letting his footsteps return to their normal volume. As he got closer, he realized that Izan's face was wet. His eyes didn't meet Laredo's. He was breathing harshly.
"Hey, Izan?"
Laredo’s hand came up to cup Izan's face. Izan flinched hard, a whimper escaping. Laredo felt a knife drag through his heart as they finally made eye contact.
"Oh, Izan, Izan, come with me." He stepped backwards, towards the front door. "Let's sit on the porch, get some fresh air."
Izan hesitated, watching Laredo like he was a complete stranger. Laredo kept his hands soft as he reached and took one of Izan's hands in both of his. "Come on, I have you. Nothing bad is going to happen."
Slowly, carefully, Izan followed Laredo out onto the porch, taking his cue to sit on the swing they'd installed. The warm night air was filled with the sound of frogs singing. Gradually, Izan leaned against Laredo.
"That's it, just breathe with me." He said, looping an arm around Izan. "You don't have to talk. No need to explain."
Laredo didn't move when Izan's shaking slowly subsided. When he grew heavier, and his breathing evened out, he just leaned them both backwards. The wood wasn't the most comfortable thing Laredo had ever laid on, but really, he thought to himself, it was fine. Izan was worth the discomfort.

More from the Department of Star Trek Stars in Other Roles: DeForest Kelley guest stars as the gruff doctor (typecasting!) David Ingram in "Sound of Terror," an episode of LAREDO that originally ared April 7, 1966, six months before his debut as Dr. McCoy. LAREDO was just one of many Westerns on both the big and small screens that he appeared in.

Screen legend John Carradine also guest stars as the proprietor of a traveling chamber of horrors.
