The prompt was a character would have to divulge their fears... and Yami Marik finds it fun to take advantage of others' fears.

Trip and his Pokemon did put up a good fight and Trip very likely would have won up against a mortal, but... Trip also kept hesitating to just burn the spirit because he's friendly with a Marik and wasn't 100% clear on whether doing so would harm his friend/trainer of a nice Ghost type he's friendly with.

(Since the Marik he knew went to a Pokemon-themed game and has his own Pokemon team + his Yamask, Chenzira, also came to the same RP I played Trip in, Faraway Place... if you want a palate cleanser, have Trip and Chenzira being cute in their first meeting and during a festival.)

Oh, this is sick, but a very good question! Trip wouldn't fall for Team Plasma, even with its supposedly noble first incarnation's stated goals, because he's very pragmatic, although I can easily see cult-like tactics working on Trip in general as he's very acknowledgment-seeking (his entire reason for fighting, reason for his journey, as he revealed in the Junior Cup...) Humans "using" Pokemon is only natural. Earlier on, he avoided all bonds, believing they could hinder his development and path to strength... he kept aloof from them and even other humans. He was still kind to his Pokemon, in a cold sort of way, and they loved him.

Team Rocket could potentially win him over.

He doesn't need an organization that claims to offer anything but power. Team Rocket only desires to conquer regions and control them from the shadows--they were already and remain, to the series' end, undefeated and the most successful villainous team--this is because Trip has no illusions about being good.

He knows he's not. He knows he wants power and strength. He has a very ends-justifies-the-means approach to things that honestly reminds me of Hun (Bashou.)

Trip believes siding with other human beings against other creatures, even if they're in the wrong, is only natural.

"They're attacking humans arbitrarily, isn't getting rid of them a matter of course?"

(Even after it's made clear using force will likely result "in great losses on both sides"... )

"I don't care about the reason, the result is what's important."

(Also, that's a very well-fed Lampler/Lampent… look at the size of that flame! It's not stated outright, but, this episode taking place in a city [see dex entry] and featuring Lampent, and its flame looking larger than a hungry Lampent's… could be implying it's fed on some of these Fushide/Venipede Shootie/Trip's dead set on 'getting rid of' and burning… also, it's growing...)

Trip is not good. He does not believe himself to be good, so there is nothing to "fall" from. His hands are already stained. A Gym Leader tried to lecture him about using peaceful means with violent Pokemon, warned Trip he's being unjust, but Trip did not care. It didn't even give him a moment's hesitation. He mocked Ash throwing himself in harm's way for one of these violent wild Pokemon ("What a pointless thing to do..."), he even threatened Ash when he stood in his way ("Move out of the way or you'll become our enemy"), he only ever changed his ways when he saw peaceful means truly could work. He sincerely believed they wouldn't be because he already had a very cynical worldview and felt it was foregone conclusion. He has to SEE it working to believe it.

So, would he side with Team Rocket if some yarn was spun about how controlling these regions would be for humanity's own good and betterment? ... er, that's still assuming a lot of Trip.

He doesn't need a noble goal. He can pursue strength for its own sake.

Yes, he fought the Venipede hoping to save Castelia City, but there were things he did that were mostly motivated by his own love of strength. He wanted to attack the head of the Venipede because it was the strongest--for the challenge! It was partly to disrupt Ash and friends' meaningless (in Trip's eyes) peace effort, but we're shown he's interested in the head because of its strength. He was primarily thinking of it as a worthy opponent. He could very well do things just for the challenge and glory of it.

"Being the strongest trainer, that's what being Champion is about. My victory will prove to everyone that I'm right… even to the Champion."

I love the prominent shadows here as Shootie walks away… Tetsuo Yajima directed this and it reminds me a bit of Alan/Alain's descent into darkness in The Strongest Mega Evolution.

Lampler constantly churns hyper oxygenated air in its dome, and ignites it for a consistent burn for its entire time awake. When it is sleeping, even its eyes disappear, leaving what looks like an abandoned lamp. It is said that lamps are based on Lampler that were around from ancient times. Chandela is a fairly modern discovery.
