ForestClan History: Chicoryglint
Chicoryglint was the protector of secrets - or rather, the medicine cat - during Lakestar's reign, and Windfur's mentor before she disappeared. To Windfur, she was a skilled, wisened mentor who taught him how to memorize medicines and clan rituals using songs and nursery rhymes. She was patient and respectful, and always tried to push Windfur to be a better medic. But to the remaining founders of modern-day ForestClan - Chicoryglint was a cat who perpetually fawned when faced with conflict. Her aversion to risk and fear of consequences resulted in her never truly standing up for anyone, and many attribute her cowardice as one of many reasons why Lakestar was enabled to abuse her clanmates.
This history dive will go over Chicoryglint's early life, her actions during Lakestar's reign, and the lasting impact her presence left behind on modern-day ForestClan.
EARLY LIFE
Chicoryglint was born to a litter of three, where she remained the lone survivor. She only had her mother; the father was not known. Chicorykit was a very nervous cat who seemed to pay too much attention to the elder's stories, and was often found eavesdropping on conversations between Birchstar and Pinegrove about "feeding the woods" and Woodcrawlers. Chicorykit was afraid of dying, to the point where she would often spend time with the old protector of secrets, Patchrift, and riddle him with questions about what she would do if she was poisoned, or bleeding, or bit by an animal.
Patchrift had grown old, and his health was dwindling. Considering Chicorykit's interest, he brought her in as his apprentice, and when Birchstar sent her to her trial, Patchrift gave her directions to the Half-Moon Dome, and told her to hide there. Patchrift was definitely not permitted to do this - but Chicorypaw learned she would need to keep secrets to survive. And when she discovered the Iris existed and could not be stopped, only slowed - the terrifying vision ingrained her with perpetual, lifelong anxiety towards death.
Despite that, she was a very competent and extremely compassionate medicine cat. She was renowned for being able to perform minor surgeries, impressing even her mentor. She learned stitching with the use of small bones and woven-string cobwebs, and assisting the closing of wounds with eggshell skin membranes. After some time, she was named Chicoryglint, and Patchrift passed on not long after.
Chicoryglint's first major surgery was healing Rootgrove after his head injury against a Gardener. While staunching the bleeding and assessing damage, she noticed something. On Rootgrove's skull was a root-like thing, and it was writhing, as though trying to burrow in his bone. She impulsively yanked it, and pulled out a thin tendril as long as her arm. Terrified, she quickly stitched Rootgrove up, then threw the root into one of the fires while no one was looking. She made certain to watch it burn until there was nothing left of it.
Rootgrove was received with honor for surviving the Gardener attack, and Chicoryglint's skills were highly praised. She should've been happy - surely she pulled all of it out. Maybe it was just debris from Lakeshine carrying him. Yes, of course. There was nothing to worry about anymore. But deep down, she knew the truth. When she watched him experience seizures, report strange dreams, and start muttering to himself, she dismissed his dreams and kept giving him valerian. One day, Rootgrove appeared in front of her, stared at her with blank, empty eyes, and muttered, "The Iris. It is with us now. Laughing at us." This horrified her - the fact that Rootgrove didn't remember saying this only made it worse. Rootgrove isn't supposed to know about the Iris. She remembered the root she pulled from his skull, and trembled.
After this event, Chicoryglint felt immense dread about the woods and everything in it. She started to keep track of the number of cats that died each moon, and to what, especially keeping track of the apprentice trials. When Birchstar stopped enforcing them, she noticed an increase in deaths overall to all cats, but she was too afraid to say anything. She didn't want to be picked off, but nobody wanted apprentice trials either. She couldn't say anything about this. To say that they needed them would cause them to hate her. So she didn't.
DURING LAKESTAR'S RULE
One day, Lakestar approached her. She noticed the woods picking off cats more often than she remembered in her youth, and asked if she had received messages from StarClan. Chicoryglint finally saw an opportunity - if the facts came from a leader, then the Clan would accept it more easily.
Chicoryglint explained that apprentice trials DID serve a purpose: the more apprentices passed their trials, the less likely the Woods were to attack apprentices AND adult cats in the long run. It was messing with Woodcrawlers' risk assessment - if they had trouble killing cats as adolescents, then adults were not worth the energy to hunt. It also resulted in less periods of famine - the woods still received food occasionally, and wouldn't eat all of ForestClan's prey. With this information, Lakestar reinstated apprentice trials, despite the harsh protests. Chicoryglint stood by Lakestar's decision, but found that despite showing them the evidence, she received ire from her clanmates. Chicoryglint became more reclusive and avoidant of those who reprimanded her, not wanting to face their anger.
As the years went on, Chicoryglint watched Lakestar devolve into someone cold and cruel. Chicoryglint just wanted to reduce chances of death, but Lakestar had become so paranoid after Rootgrove's death that she was lashing out at those who opposed her and sent them to feed the woods. When Chicoryglint suggested that one set of apprentices didn't need to be sent on trials, Lakestar accused her of lying to her, which Chicoryglint adamantly denied. She was more afraid of Lakestar and being sent to the woods than she loved her clanmates, and recinded her comment.
She started to see Redpath getting closer to Lakestar, and watched a lot of dissenters out of fear. When Weaselfang suddenly died and Redpath was made deputy, she was frightened. She knew that despite what Redpath would say in front of Lakestar, the way Iciclepool would bite her tongue around her just…didn't make sense. She knew they were up to something. But again, Chicoryglint was too afraid to say anything. What would people do to her if she spoke up? Is this how most of the Clan felt about Lakestar? If she told Lakestar, would they plot to kill her too? This paranoia prevented her from taking on apprentices, believing that if she was the sole healer, they couldn't simply get rid of her. If she was too useful to them, then she couldn't be killed.
That is, until Lakestar finally put her foot down and said that Chicoryglint was too brilliant of a healer to let her skills go untaught. She forced Windpaw on her, told her that he wouldn't get a trial; he'd be mentored by her and that was final. In a moment of lucid clarity, Chicoryglint decided that this was it. She was going to die. To Lakestar. To Redpath. To the woods. Whoever did it, she no longer had her leverage, and she was disposable. If that was going to happen, she would make sure that at least one cat remembered her with love. Just one. She was patient and kind with Windpaw, and honest with him when she would buckle up nervously at some subjects. She taught him a lot of nursery rhymes and songs that helped her memorize treatments, and was patient with letting him treat others.
Then, one leaf-bare afternoon, Lakestar and Redpath left the camp, and with solemn intent, half the clan left in silence after them. Eventually, these cats came back, and Iciclepool stated flatly that Lakestar was dead. Several cats were shocked and tired, and too exhausted emotionally to care. They had watched Redpath act around Lakestar, and had no reason to trust that she would be any different from her. For many, it was too much for one lifetime. They wished them luck and left camp, never to be seen again. Chicoryglint stayed, afraid that if she tried, they'd kill her for enabling Lakestar and refusing to finish training Windpaw.
In the end, only the conspirators, Chicoryglint and Windpaw stayed. She finished Windfur's training, and after asking Windfur to promise her that he would stay with the Clan no matter what, Chicoryglint sent Windfur home from the Half-Moon dome…and she never returned. Windfur was devastated and thought that the woods ate her, blaming himself for not waiting for her before leaving. But the older cats knew better. To protect Windfur's feelings about his mentor, they let him grieve, and held a funeral. But everyone knew Chicoryglint left just as she lived - running away and avoiding responsibility for her actions.
LASTING IMPACT
Chicoryglint is one of the reasons Rootgrove exists as he currently is. She did not tell anyone about the Deep Root Disease she found, and her impulsive extraction of the virus resulted in it becoming dormant within Rootgrove. If the Clan had known, perhaps they would've taken Rootgrove's nonsensical dreams and ramblings more seriously, or more grimly, perhaps euthanized him when he seemed too far gone. Any fate would have been preferable to the one he is currently forced to live with. But he is stuck with the one he has, in part, due to her fear of consequences.
Her obsessive tracking of deaths also became one of the reasons why Lakestar was adamant with her choice to enforce apprentice trials, the latter even adopting Chicoryglint's claw-scratching into the walls of her own den to track moons. Perhaps if Chicoryglint consulted with StarClan before telling Lakestar what she discovered, or thought about how much adults would want to protect their children over themselves, many lives could've been spared. With the exception of Windfur, most of ForestClan regard Chicoryglint's inaction and submission to Lakestar to be cowardice - surely StarClan must've told her that letting Lakestar go this far was wrong?
For the most part, everyone in ForestClan has chosen to move on from her memory. Windfur will be one of the few cats who still remember her fondly, and part of Windfur's character growth will involve recognizing that she wasn't the person he thought she was. She may have had some redeeming qualities, but in ForestClan's territory - apathy is death. To not care about anyone's well being but your own will always result in suffering. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the knowledge that some things are more important than fear. Hopefully, Windfur will learn that lesson where Chicoryglint did not.

Clan of the Marsh Leadership
Here, a leader is selected by the Clan of Stars from a pool of the 4 eldest active warriors in the Clan, known as the Guard. These cats split all the traditional roles of a Deputy, and are the ones who oversee all day-to-day activities.
Lakestar (middle) is the youngest leader of the three Clans. She took over from Sparrowstar after her death two seasons ago. No cats below the rank of Guard or Medicine Cat are allowed to speak directly to the Clan leader unless spoken to.
Elmbark (back left) oversees all hunting activity within Clan territory, and is mates with Minnowflash (front left). She oversees the training of apprentices, and approves of all methods taught by mentors.
Galestorm (back right) is the youngest of the Guard, and supervises all border patrols. Heronclaw (front right) is the eldest Guard, and has been in charge of overseeing all activities done inside the camp for many moons.

Online friends give you the unintended consequence of being unable to think about lakes normally because ten years ago Lakestar2002 from a now defunct game disappeared and you hope they are okay. You can’t hear a doorbell without thinking about DingusLickisDongus. You see a bird and go “wow just like Xx_Sparrow_xX”. I hope I’ve burned my image into someone when they hear something as simple as a finger snap.

Because IS-OT didn't want a name that wasn't Lakestar, a new clan (Duskclan) has formed in the Aurora Collective. They don't yet have a medicine cat.

Snowdrop is white and brown point she-cat with ocean-blue eyes.
Snowdrop is currently a MapleClan warrior who has served under Lakestar's leadership in the Woodland territories and is now serving under Treestar's. She and her sister, Flake, were born as kittypets to Aspen and Blizzard.
After being carried and unexpectedly dropped by a hawk during a rainstorm, Snow found herself in MapleClan territory of the Woodlands. She was eager to become a warrior—serve and protect her Clan—and assisted in driving out the Brotherhood. She was mentored by Brookshine as Snowpaw and earned her warrior name after passing her assessment. She became mates with Blackthorn and had three kits: Frostkit, Rosekit, and Fogkit (later renamed Ghostcall).
I redesigned her again (for the sextillionth time), but I feel satisfied with her backstory. I don't think I've ever read a character getting carried by a bird of prey and dropped in the books, so I came up with a twist!

MOON 10 (Part 1)
<< FIRST | < PREVIOUS |
Redstar turned to Cloudthunder in a time of need and was hurt when she turned away from her. But how could Cloudthunder not refuse? She understood Redstar's desperation - but she would not kill her leader.
(Cloudthunder, warrior, female, 43 moons) (Redstar, leader, female, 68 moons)
---
"You wanted to see me, Redstar?" Cloudthunder asked. She was heavily pregnant now, and dragging herself up to Redstar's den was a difficult endeavor. Redstar stared at her warrior, feelings of guilt and frustration swelling inside her. Cloudthunder shouldn't have had to do this. And still, she was going to ask of her a task that she knew no one else would grant her.
She hoped that she would forgive her for putting this on her shoulders.
Redstar felt aching and frail. Her infected wound was getting worse by the day, and she knew that despite Windfur's best intentions, it would not get better. Redstar made sure of that.
She thought that it might recover in time for her to throw herself at the woods again. But it didn't, and she was running out of time. She tried to do it herself, but despite her best efforts, it wasn't working. Cloudthunder would go into labour soon, and that meant the woods would be stalking their walls. Cloudthunder had to do this. She was the only one who had the biggest motive to do so.
Redstar quietly gestured for Cloudthunder to sit, and the warrior did so. She gave her leader a calculated stare.
Redstar closed her eyes. Relax. She had to relax. It was getting harder and harder for her to maintain composure as of late - no thanks to her broken leg. But she had to remain calm - for Cloudthunder.
"I'm sorry I called you to my den," she started carefully. "For what it's worth, you're not in any trouble."
Cloudthunder didn't reply, but her posture visibly relaxed. She blinked at her. "Well, that's a relief. But I still assume it's important."
"It is," Redstar confirmed. She slowly rested her head on the bump of her bedding, her blue eyes filled with exhaustion. Guilt weighed heavily on her heart for what she was about to ask. She thought, after she killed Lakestar, that she could spare her clanmates from having to make any more horrible decisions or cruel sacrifices. But she had no choice, and she was asking Cloudthunder to do this. It was a sacrifice she had to make, and one she hoped her clanmate would have enough motive to assist with.
Redstar must've been silent for too long, as the white and gray molly's ear flicked with concern. Cloudthunder tilted her head. "Are you going to tell me what it is?"
"Yes. I'm sorry. It's just…it's difficult to ask this of you."
"So, it's a favor, then."
"More of a burden."
Cloudthunder's orange eyes flickered warily. "...Redstar?"
The calico tabby took a deep breath. "First, I understand what I'm asking of you. No, I am not underplaying the seriousness of this. This is not something I am taking lightly." Redstar's blue eyes glanced up at her warrior solemnly. "Second…I need you to help me die."
Evidently, that wasn't the task that Cloudthunder was expected to receive. Her eyes widened and she recoiled, her mouth agape. She barely meowed, “W-What? Redstar, why?”
“It's been several moons since the woods have been fed, Cloudthunder.” Redstar felt her throat tighten. "I have been confined to camp for too many moons. Windfur will not listen to me."
“Redstar, no. I...I can’t do that.”
“You must. It doesn't need to be violent. You could escort me out of camp,” Redstar bargained. She felt the anxiety in her heart rise as Cloudthunder's expression showed reluctance. "It doesn't need to be far. Just close enough for me to drag myself to a Woodcrawler den."
"Redstar." Cloudthunder repeated, aghast.
"Please, Cloudthunder. I understand I am asking something horrific of you. I know this is something you and the Clan would never want to undertake. It's why I - it's why I took the burden of murdering Lakestar."
A tense silence followed this reply. Redstar continued hastily, as though the warrior was about to leave. "I would never ask this of you if I didn't have to. I promise I will be fine - StarClan will heal my wounds once I die."
“Why me?” Cloudthunder finally pressed. Her tail twitched and her body tensed.
“Because no one else has a strong enough reason to see a cat fed to the woods right now than you. Windfur is not taking me seriously. Iciclepool and Hopechase will not grant me this - I know them too well. The newer and younger members couldn't possibly understand why I would ask this of them. But you do. You've seen what the woods can do as well as I," Redstar hissed. "If it’s not me, it will be your kits. One of my lives could save them. Protect them.”
A heavy, tense silence fell upon them. Redstar glared into Cloudthunder's eyes intensely, waiting for her to say something, anything. She watched as the warrior's ears folded back, then tore her stare away from the leader to stare at the den's walls. Unknown emotions were brimming at the surface, and Redstar wanted nothing more than to make her feel safe and unburdened.
"Please, Cloudthunder. Speak to me," she rasped.
“...Redstar, I understand your dilemma. But...you can’t save everyone." Cloudthunder meowed. She refused to look at her leader.
Redstar's eyes widened as she felt her heart skip with despair. "I'm not trying to save everyone. I'm trying to protect you. Your children," she bargained desperately.
"Redstar, I know what you're trying to do. I understand your plight. You're trying to be the opposite of Lakestar, and we respect that. It's why we follow you," Cloudthunder finally turned her gaze back towards her, and gently placed her tail on her leader's flank. "...But…the things," Cloudthunder swallowed as she avoided speaking the name of the Living Tendrils. "Those…are unavoidable."
"Cloud."
"Redstar, do you remember when Sprucetail gave birth? When Weaselfang died the moon prior?"
Redstar's fur bristled. She knew what she was implying and she didn't like it. She wanted to object and hiss and snarl, but her throbbing pain surging through her body left her with no strength.
"I don't know if feeding the woods will change anything, Redstar," she sighed. "Kits have always died here. We fight to prevent it, every time. But I understand that I may not have a litter at all by the end of this moon. I’ve spoken to Iciclepool, and Olive. I've come to terms with that.” Cloudthunder's copper eyes were glazed with sorrow. "Your death won't prevent it."
"T-Then what about the others?" Redstar gasped, desperately clinging to hope. "What if it takes a warrior? Takes you?"
"Do you have no faith in our walls?" Cloudthunder pressed. "A Woodcrawler isn't going to break through our walls, and you're not actively sending us into the woods."
"But Tree and Shiverpaw - "
"Survived and successfully ran home. We know how to identify Deep Root entities, Redstar. We know how to run from them. And we have those Twoleg fire sticks. Talontooth has helped collect some pine resin - it will be perfect for preserving flames. In fact, we may be able to repel the Tendrils with them," Cloudthunder's expression shifted into one of hope. "We may be able to turn against them for the first time since Lakestar. Wouldn't that be something good?"
Redstar felt panic rise in her. No. She couldn't leave her like this. "Cloud. Please. I promised. I promised that - "
"That you'd protect us, Redstar. I know." Cloudthunder's gaze was eerily calm. “But I will not kill my leader. I’ll get Shiverpaw for your infection.”
Redstar felt like the world was crashing down on her as she watched the gray and white queen leave her den. As the silence filled her den, she felt her teeth grit in anger. She suppressed an angry snarl, allowing her claws to rip up her bedding. Cloudthunder was wrong. That wasn't the only thing she promised. It just wasn't.
She remembered many, many seasons ago - when she was still Redpath, and Lakestar still reigned. She remembered when Iciclepool gave birth to her second litter. A precarious birth, for anxious and wary parents. After the deaths of all of their children, Cliffstep and Iciclepool hesitantly tried once more. Their once-eager smiles and excitement from their first litter were now damped - gentle, polite smiles and soft thank-yous as Iciclepool's pregnancy was congratulated. Cliffstep became a permanent shadow by his mate's side. Redpath remembered catching Lakestar mumbling in her den, and peeked to see her etching lines in the walls. Redpath didn't know at the time what she was counting - but she would later know it was the amount of moons that passed since the woods were fed.
And when Iciclepool went into labor, and the tendrils came to claim their due, Redpath watched as her friend had two less kits, and Lakestar…had sat in her den. She emerged from the High Rock when Iciclepool started to wail, and made a dull statement about making a funeral once everyone saw Chicoryglint.
She remembered sitting in the graveyard in front of the great oak, seeing the rows and rows of lines belonging to every unnamed kit and stolen stranger found on their territory. She remembered carving two additional lines in the bark.
She remembered gliding her paw across the bark. She counted backwards, and counted up to nine. She measured the distance between those nine, unnamed lives. And she dug her claws deep into the earth, seething with fury.
She remembered sitting in the training clearing with Iciclepool, her eyes vacant with horrific sorrow.
"I can't do this anymore, Redpath. Everything…everything is gone. My kits. My Cliffstep," she whimpered. "It's all gone. I have nothing. And it's all…it's all - " Iciclepool broke and wailed, crouching to the floor with despair.
Redpath decided at that moment. That one, singular moment, that she would never allow another mother to suffer like Iciclepool had. That night, she stared at her own paws, and contemplated her name. Redpath. Lakestar had given it to her. For her ferocity. Loyalty.
She wondered, some days, if Lakestar saw right through her. If she knew what Redpath was going to do to her. Whether she was completely fooled, or somewhat aware. In the end, it didn't matter.
Her red path would grant them safety. She would make sure that no mother would ever have to suffer the loss of a kit ever again. She would fight the woods tooth and nail. Until there was nothing left of her.
And now, today, here she lay. Her leg broken, infected, inflamed and her mind a haze. And a future mother just told her that she would accept the losses. More lines carved in the great oak tree. Just like she failed Olive, and Barleywave.
Redstar felt numb as she stared ahead into nothing. When Shiverpaw appeared at the entrance of her den with comfrey and stinging nettle stems, Redstar's blue eyes remained vacant.
She made a promise. To her Clan, to StarClan. To the legend of the gentle camp. Loyalty, bravery, sacrifice, death.
She had to die. She had to protect her Clanmates.
So why would no one let her?
