Oopsy of a Mondate
Knowing it was going to be warmer today, we decided to venture to a local park where the snow pack would be less. That doesn’t sound right coming from this snow queen, but we didn’t feel like postholing or having snow stuck to the bottoms of our snowshoes. This is a place where we know beavers are active. And I, of course, went with expectations. And convinced My Guy that we should begin and end…

Do you like swimming?

Except I don't get to go swimming as much bc I really only get to when I'm camping at Sebago.
But I really love it!

When i was a kid i stepped on a nail. It pierced through my blue, Old Navy flip flop and about a half inch into my skin. I was running back inside, rushing, trying to make it back inside before dinner.  I thought I stepped on a bee at first, until I glanced behind and saw my bloody footprints in the glass. It’s amazing how much more things hurt when you’re staring straight at them. Like how bad a mosquito bite hurts if you watch it draw blood. Or how you have to look away when you get a shot.
When I looked at the nail poking from my foot and saw it, really saw it, all of a sudden, it felt like a fire spreading inside the ball of my foot. Crippled by pain, I fell onto my knees, screaming, rolling around in the grass. I had to spend the last two weeks of summer with a bandaged foot. I couldn’t go swimming when we took our camping trip to Sebago Lake, and when we went to Funtown, I couldn’t go on any of the waterslides or the wave pool.
Now, my life’s a bit like that. The pain is pretty mild if I’m rushing around, filling my days with work and money and mundane stress that eats at the mind. The normal pain that is a tax on the living.
But when I’m alone, and I get a chance to take a look at my soul, all of the oozing pus and infected purple blights and open sores, the pain strikes with bared fangs, iron hot into my soul. When I really think about the decay of my body, the decay of my spirit, the chest tightens and it feels like I’m breathing through a straw. I collapse, screaming. I shouldn’t exist. I shouldn’t be here.
But I’m fucking 30. No one is going to race from the house, down the gentle hill of our lawn, scoop me up, and take me to the emergency room.  Eventually, I think I’m going to bleed out. All this terror, all these crumbling days and nights full of smoke. Time is a puncture wound, and I don’t have any more blood to let.
