James Nicolas Sutherland Matheson was born on October 17th 1896 at Shiness, near Lairg, Sutherland.
The was the son of a Scottish trader in India. After attending the University of Edinburgh he also became a trader in India and in 1832 he co-founded Jardine-Matheson company in Canton (Guangzhou) with the aim of trading opium, tea and other goods with China.
I’m not going to beat about the bush, Matheson wasn’t a nice guy, he persuaded the Government to wage war with China, which had rejected proposals to legalise opium. The drug had become a problem for the Chinese Government who tried to abolish the trade by confiscation and port blockade.
The subsequent Treaty of Nanking in 1842 allowed Jardine Matheson to expand its business empire from Canton to Hong Kong and mainland China.
There was some good points in his life, in 1844 Matheson bought the Isle of Lewis for more than £500,000 from the bankrupt estate of the MacKenzies of Seaforth. Construction of the Castle, which was built on the site of the Seaforth Lodge, commenced in 1847 and took seven years to complete. During his period of ownership of the island Matheson provided employment, funded famine relief and engaged in many other social and economic projects to the benefit of the whole community, spending some £329,000 by 1850.
However.
As well as Lewis he also took charge of the Island adjoining it - Bernera. He appointed a solicitor to be his factor, Donald Munro. Munro was soon seen to be heavy handed, and his evictions were naturally unpopular. In 1874 Donald Munro went a step too far for the crofters - he sent in a Sheriff Officer to Bernera to serve 58 eviction notices.
Really, there was no just cause for this action and it was greeted with utter disbelief! When the bailiffs arrived at Tobson they were pelted with a shower of clods of earth. The sheriff officer also had his coat torn and he issued a threat saying that “ if he had a gun may Bernera mothers would be mourning the loss of their sons”.
After three crofters were singled out and arrested hundreds of Bernera men with pipers at the front marched on Lews Castle, Stornoway. They demanded an audience with Matheson himself. Matheson who was somewhat aged at the time disowned Donald Munro, who came to be dismissed in 1875. It has become known as the Bernera Riot.
The Bernera court case of 1874 is the first documented victory for Highland crofters and correctly holds its place as the opening shot of the crofters fight-back which led to the Napier Commission and land reform. The prisoners were acquitted following the brilliant performance of the Inverness lawyer Charles Innes. Mr Innes’s name is still revered in Bernera today. This case was a most welcome victory for the crofters and it inspired many more to revolt.
Stones from every croft on Bernera and Tir Mor are incorporated in this cairn and the coping stones are taken from the houses of the three men who stood trial.
Matheson died in 1878 at the age of 82 in Menton France. The Lewis estate passed to his widow and subsequently to his nephew Donald and great-nephew Colonel Duncan Matheson.
His widow erected a memorial to him in the grounds of Lews Castle He left £1,500 to help pay for the construction of the harbour at
The organisation that Matheson co-founded has evolved into Jardine Matheson Holdings, which still exists today, in 2013 the company was in the top 200 publicly traded companies in the world. Until 1936, principles of staff recruitment, told by Keswick, remained Scottish first, Oxbridge second, while the leadership of the company is Scottish, the firm is international in its dealings. The firm now employs around 390,000 staff with an annual turnover in excess of £35billion.
Pics are Matheson, the family Tomb at Lairg and the cairn was situated in the centre of Bernera in 1992 to commemorate the Bernera Riot of 1874.

《A video begins in an outdoor field. At least, you think; the camera is being held up very high, and a faint, multicolored light glows from somewhere behind it. A toned looking woman with dark blue hair stands in front of a tree. Only her head is visible in frame.》
"'Ave a keek at that! Yer actually hauldin' it! Mibbi go a wee lower, though."
《A sound comparable only to a live wire comes from behind the camera as it slowly lowers. Still fairly high up, but you can see more than the womans face now, as well as the vaugely familiar geography.》
"Guid 'nough. Dinnea need 'ta see much, anyhoos. Mah names Philomena, a'm juist 'ere 'ta shaw ye' whatall 'eve been dealin with. 'Tae the left, Xuri."
《The camera shakily pans to show an artificial lake with a comedic number of (suprisingly normal looking) Krabby. You can barely see the surface of the water! They're spilling out and into the field! A few sad, heavily patched up kiddie pools host even more.》
"Thaes crabby guys juist shawed up yin day. We think a stray wormhole dropped 'yim in. We pat 'im in 'ar rehabilitation pond, bit theres juist awfy much seafood fur the size. Honestly, crabs aren't this lairge whaur a'm faem, bit thay cannae shoot magical death rays either. 'Tis bin an experience.
Sae if a'body haes history wi' Krabby, we'd loue tae hear it. They're nae exactly native 'er-"
《Sky... and then grass... sky again... thunk. Seems that the cameraman didn't have a great grip. The video cuts off the moment the camera hits the ground.》

ARCHEOLOGY - Does your muse have any interest in history? Is there a particular era or topic that they most enjoy learning about? - for Jonathan.
{Jonathan pauses from reading the book that rested in his hands to look up at you as you asked him the question, he contemplated in silence for a moment.} “Mainly the history of medicine and how it's evolved-" {He begins to explain, adjusting slightly in his chair so as to be more comfortable.} "-for one, did you know, that in 1885 many doctors prescribed cocaine to treat Hay Fever?"
{At your second question, Jonathan perks up.} "Ancient history, mainly Greek and Roman."

SUMMONING - Has your muse ever had a pet? Would they like to have one now if they don't currently have one? What type of pet are they most suited to - for Lachlan
"Aye! ah did hae a pet - a rabbit actually! her name wis daisy. She wis yin o' they lairge breeds… Whit wis it called?.." {He's snapping his fingers together, brows furrowed as he tries to recall the name of the breed his Daisy was, when suddenly it comes to him.} "Och! a flemish giant!"
{You watch a she nods his head eagerly at your second question.} "Och jimmy, if ah coul git anither pet a'd git twa irish wolfhounds. Theyre huge! juist lik' me!" {He's grinning ear to ear.}

COOKING - How well can your muse cook? Do they have a favorite dish or type of cuisine to prepare? Would they rather cook dinner or go out to a restaurant - for Alisa
{Alisa smiles at you} "Oh I can cook you a mean Borscht and Beef Stroganoff! My бабушка would always make some for me when I got sick.." {At that last part, you can see a small hint of sadness and melancholy pass through her, but its quickly replaced with another kind smile.}
"My favorite..? Hmm..." {She pauses briefly, thinking.} "Pelmeni. Oh - and I always prefer a good home cooked meal over going out. Nothing beats being warm and cozy under two blankets and a roaring fire."
✦·┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈·✦

DEFENSE - How well is your muse able to defend themself in a physical fight? Do they have any sort of martial arts or fighting training - for Ichabod
{Ichabod smiles sheepishly at your question.} "Oh, well enough.. m-mind you!"
{There's a slight pause before he awkwardly coughs and looks away.} "Certainly!" {You're beginning to suspect that he could very well be lying to you...}

SMITHING - How does your muse handle heat? Do they overheat or catch chills more easily? Do they prefer to be warm or cold? - for Sean
"I can handle the heat very well.. although I've spent far too many years away from my home Ireland, I'm not one to forget those blazing hot summers when I was a little boy." {Sean says with a soft smile, he remembers those years fondly.}
"However... since spending time here, I'll admit that I've grown accustomed to being cold and wet.." {He says with a little laugh.}
✦·┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈·✦

CRAFTING - What are your muse's creative outlets? Would they ever consider turning those outlets into a business or would they rather keep them as a hobby? - for Gaunter
"Why.. the lives of others! For they are 'God's little gifts' to me~.." {Gaunter muses, laughing, a little wicked grin graces his lips as he gives you an not-so-playful wink.}
{You watch as Gaunter snorts, a hand goes to his mouth, he's trying to hide the growing grin across his lips.} "A business? My.. now that's an idea~..."

STRENGTH - How strong is your muse? Did they come by this strength naturally or unnaturally (steroids, magic, technology, etc)? Which do they value more, mental or physical strength? - for Regis
"I am as strong as strong as Higher Vampires come.." {He says, smiling, a little chuckle leaves his lips.} "To answer your question, unlike my companion Dettlaff- I wasn't born a Higher Vampire, I was turned into one long ago."
"Mental strength holds more value to me, as what we learn from the ages will hold boundless value than that of physical strength."

Send 👔 for my muse to talk about their father
"Lairge Eirstaer....he....he is the man who influenced how I interact with every person in my life. He moves me in every step of my entire life. But never via inspiration. It is by fear. Fear that I become him. I fight every instinct that I see of that man in myself, greed, arrogance, gluttony. He is why I am the way I am. Because, I have seen what that man has done to me, my mother and our family and two words sing in my head every time."
"Never. Again."

I get to learn my first bagpipe tune!! My teacher is having me learn “The Waters of Kylesku”
Kylesku is a remote fishing hamlet in Northwest Sutherland. In Gaelic, it’s name is An Caolas Cumhang which means “the narrow strait”. It’s called this because it sits at the confluence of Loch Glencoul and Loch Gleann Dubh to form a sea passage known as Loch a’ Chàirn Bhàin (White Cairn Loch).
The tune is likely traditional, but has lyrics sometimes attributed to Sir David Henderson, a Scottish officer in the British military. The words are from the perspective of a homesick Scottish soldier lamenting that he is so far from his home in Kylesku. The first two stanzas go as follows:
By Clebrig and Ben Loyal and the bonnie Kyle of Tongue,
The roads we oft times travelled in the days when we were young;
There's magic and there's beauty in those Hills while passing through,
There's many a mile from Melness to the Waters of Kylesku.
O'er all of Bonnie Scotland I dearly love the west,
It's bens and glens in summer time they surely are the best;
There's grandeur and there's beauty in those Hills while passing through,
There's many a mile from Lairg to the Waters of Kylesku.
And here’s a recording of the tune! Hopefully I can post one of my own soon :)

24 avril:
26 avril:
Balade direction Cape Wrath jusqu'à mi-chemin puis retour.

Sometimes I forget that when non-Irish people read Irish place-names as Gaeilge, the pronunciation doesn't...quite match the actual one. I've had some wonderful experiences of:
Limneech (luimneach)
Port Large (port lairge)
Done na na Gaul (dún na ngall)
I love irish
Sometimes I realise that to non-Irish people TG4 is not inherently Irish and they’d pronounce it T-G-four. Which is so wrong it makes my brain hurt.
