birthright, george abraham

i don't think i've ever read a collection that has hit me this hard. george abraham (they/he/هو) is a queer palestinian american poet, performance arist, and writer who was born and raised on unceded timucuan lands (jacksonville, FL). birthright is their debut collection, and its title is based on the idea of the "birthright" trips that israel funds to bring young jewish adults to israel and indoctrinate them into becoming zionist settlers. the collection is based around abraham's own trip to palestine, the "inverse of birthright", and it is absolutely stunning. the way they write about the grief and fury of the colonized, about gender, about memories and history and palestinian liberation, is gorgeous and heartbreaking and utterly galvanizing.

Haunted Mansion--Bereaved, bitter and a staunch nonbeliever in ghosts: These are perhaps not the optimum character traits for a tour guide of supposedly haunted houses in New Orleans. But before Ben (LaKeith Stanfield) unhappily landed in that job, he was a scientist who invented a camera intended to detect ghostly presences.

Thus Ben is drawn into a team of paranormal misfits, along with shady exorcist Father Kent (Owen Wilson), shady medium Harriet (Tiffany Haddish) and Bruce (Danny DeVito), a rumpled history professor, to help a young single mother (Rosario Dawson) and her son (Chase W. Dillon) who have moved into the title Louisiana domicile. The place isn't just a little bit haunted; this mansion is teeming with nearly a thousand unquiet spirits, tyrannically presided over by the "Hatbox Ghost" (Jared Leto).

After my visit in 1972, if you had asked my ten-year-old self which was my favorite ride at Disney World in Florida, I would probably have told you that it was the Nautilus submarine ride from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (long since retired). But the close second place would have gone to The Haunted Mansion, on which this extravagant Disney feature is based. I vividly remember riding past the mirrors and seeing a greenish spectral figure sitting between me and my sister in the car. The movie brought back other flourishes from the ride: the talking busts, the stretching portraits, the dueling ghosts.

There was an earlier film based on the ride in 2003, The Haunted Mansion (the new version's title dispenses with the definite article), starring Eddie Murphy. The current movie, directed by Justin Simien from a script by Katie Dippold, seems better to me than that forgettable effort, but unfortunately only a little better. Simien and Dippold and the actors try for a little depth of feeling along with the comedy, but the film feels poky and unfocused, and doesn't pick up much momentum until the reasonably exciting last twenty minutes or so.

Still, it's a good-hearted movie, with an engaging cast. Stanfield, chillingly haunted in Get Out, makes a sympathetic leading man here. Haddish's hoarse, hammy inflections as the soothsayer are funny, as are DeVito's blunt line readings as the prof; Dawson and young Dillon are pleasant as the hapless householders. As Madame Leota, the disembodied head in the crystal ball, Jamie Lee Curtis proves, if you'll pardon me saying so, spirited.

Mild as this Haunted Mansion is--I can't imagine it being truly scary to any but the littlest moviegoers--I was a bit startled, and amused, by its subtext. When we finally get some backstory on the Hatbox Ghost, there are striking paralells to another power-hungry figure who stubbornly refuses to depart from the contemporary American psyche. It could be that our nation's most perniciously haunted mansion these days is Mar-A-Lago.

Ilha nova (2023). Santarém, Pará, Brasil. Originalmente essa foto foi tirada em um dia com muita fumaça na cidade, e quando tentei editar a foto para pôr mais nitidez e contraste, ela acabou ficando com esse azulado incomum, que acabei gostando muito e deixando assim. A tal ilha nova do título se refere a essa faixa de areia e grama. Essas ilhas surgem graças ao fenômeno das terras caídas, onde o rio Amazonas acaba destruindo a própria margem e essa terra acaba se reunindo e formando uma ilha provisória em outro ponto do rio. Santarém já teve várias dessas ilhas provisórias na frente da cidade, tanto que nunca damos um nome para essas ilhas, o máximo que fazemos nesse caso é falar "nova ilha da frente" ou algo assim. Não sei se dá de reparar, mas nessa foto existem quatro ilhas, a maior dela é a ilha do meio, que é uma das únicas que tem nome pois ela não é provisória. As menores não tem nome e podem até ser consideradas parte da ilha do meio, já que o sistema de canais, igarapés, lagos e paranãs é bem complexo nessa região.

Originally this photo was taken on a very smoky day in the city, and when I tried to edit the photo to add more sharpness and contrast, it ended up having this unusual bluish tone, which I ended up really liking and leaving it that way. The new island in the title refers to this strip of sand and grass. These islands arise thanks to the phenomenon of fallen lands, where the Amazon River ends up destroying its own bank and this land ends up coming together and forming a temporary island in another part of the river. Santarém already had several of these temporary islands in front of the city, so much so that we never gave these islands a name, the most we do is say "new front island" or something like that. I don't know if you can notice, but in this photo there are four islands, the largest of which is the middle island, which is one of the only ones that has a name because it is not temporary. The smaller ones have no name and can even be considered part of the middle island, because the system of canals and streams, lakes and paranas is very complex in this region. (paranas are branches of a river separated from the main trunk by a series of islands).
