A winding road through rugged mountain terrain and sharp cliffs takes you to Tsomgo, which means source of the water in Bhutia language. The lake derives its water from the melting snows of the mountains surrounding the lake. Of legendary beauty, the lake looks different at different seasons. In winter the placid lake remains frozen with the area around it covered in snow while in late spring the profusion of flowers in bloom adds a riot of colours around the lake. The lake is associated with many myths and legends and is revered by the Sikkimese as sacred. It is believed that in old times, Buddhist monks would study the colour of the water of the lake to forecast the future.

8th April 2016 was an eventful Friday at work. It was the last day of the project that I was working on, There was a great sense of accomplishment for having done an excellent job, but at the same time a rush of emotions ran through me as I was going to miss my team who had been a part of my life for nearly a year. However, none of these could prevent me from being excited for the trip that my friends and I had been planning since forever!
After bidding adieu to my dear team, I hurried to my flat. What followed was a day of packing and final planning. On the following Sunday we set foot on our 1 week of respite after struggling and fighting a lot of objections from the families since it was an all-girls trip. So this trip was also about proving a point.
We landed at the Bagdogra airport the nearest airport to Sikkim. After a 4 hr ride in a rented car the picturesque and peaceful city of Gangtok welcomed us. We dropped our bags at the hotel and not wasting a single minute we set out to explore the city. The cleanliness and calmness of the place took us by surprise. We strolled along MG Marg and indulged in delicious momos famous in Sikkim. Enjoying the blanket of mist and cool weather we made our way back to hotel and called it day.
The next leg of journey was the much awaited Yumthang Valley at the high altitude town of Lachung. After a strenuous ride along deplorable roads adorned with beautiful cliffs and gorges on either sides, it was almost night time when we reached Lachung. Spending a quite evening with my lifelines and sharing the beautiful moments with them in an exotic land was proving the fact that people you travel with matter more than the place. The morning that followed was breathtakingly beautiful. Surrounded by snowy mountains and rhododendrons all along the path , our ride to Yumthang couldn’t have been better. The valley was the most stunning of all views. We were surrounded by snow capped mountains on all sides and there was a stream following through the valley. The tiny wild flowers of purple and white added to the charm of the valley, we spent some quiet time on the riverbed soaking it all in.
We then proceeded to Tsomgo Lake. It was an almost frozen lake the sight of which will send a chill up your spine. After playing around in snow like kids and getting frozen to death we sought for warmth and the comfort of maggi and momos which had become our most preferred food of this trip at a local shop. We then travelled back to Gangtok.
The last leg of the journey was to Pelling to enjoy the captivating view of Mt.Kanchenjunga , the third highest mountain in the world. We had taken rooms which had views of the mountain which let us enjoy our days watching the rays of the sun and the clouds dancing around the mighty Himalayas. This trip wouldn’t have been complete without visiting the Pemayangtse monastery. It was a refreshing experience.
The next day morning we started our departure, with a heavy heart at the thought of leaving Sikkim. Rain showers added on to our gloom yet never breaking the charm that had captivated us the whole week. We rode back to the airport to catch our flight to Chennai, but not without promising to come back for another visit.

Seven Sister is a popular waterfall located on the Gangtok- Lachung Highway, around 32 kilometres away from Gangtok. As the name suggests, the seven different waterfalls harmoniously arranged sideways on a wide rugged cliff seem distinct if watched from a distance. It becomes a must see place in Gangtok after rains, when the falls come into a fierce life offering an awe-inspiring view. The gurgling water of the fall plunges out of the lush green vegetation plastering the rugged cliffs, falls over the limestones making a thunderous sound. The picturesque beauty of the fall makes it tourist’s stopping point to relax and rejuvenate. The prismatic view of the setting sun allures the visitors to fall into a long photography session. Every monsoon the fall receives flood of visitors hanging cameras on their sides. It is the tourists hotspot who are keen into photography. It is also an ideal picnic spot for the families with kids. The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has built a waiting shed and cafeteria for people to refresh themselves and shoot pictures of this nature’s wonderland.
