La trahison des images (1928) by René Magritte René Magritte's series of pictures in which the realistic depiction of an object is accompanied by the subtitle "This is not a..." were the subject of numerous philosophical interpretations. However, it is is quite clear that the most obvious, and simplest, explanation lies in the observation that the picture of a pipe is nothing other than a representation and cannot be used itself for smoking. But it also throws the gate wide open to paradox. For the viewer of this painting, the object represented is clearly a pipe. The problem derives solely from the inscription which accompanies it. And why should this pipe not be a pipe? For the same reason that the word "dog" does not bark. - derived from the writing of Jacques Meuris

I'm honestly shocked that since Emotion/Representation aired I've yet to see anyone do anything at all with Felix and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein??? I think about it every day it's literally THE Felix piece of media. It's his entire character thesis. What are we doing guys
I KNOW I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT IT THE OTHER DAY
To be fair I have seen a few people headcanoning it as one of Felix’s favourite books (Which yes. Absolutely. 1,000,000%) but there hasn’t been any fics/art/edits/etc. about it yet to my knowledge. My copy is at my parents’ and in French but I am tempted to find an English PDF since it’s been public domain for a good while now. The web weave potential is insane.
I have many thoughts about Felix and literature in general… I have him quote Cyrano de Bergerac all the time in my fics, for example. I was thinking of starting a list of works of art and literature he’d enjoy, so I’ll take this as a sign to get writing! I can get my fandom friends to make some suggestions as well! 📝
Edit: @bittersweetresilience got us covered, our honour is safe 💜🦚
#For now I really need to go to bed but here’s an overview:#Frankenstein and Cyrano of course#The portrait of Dorian Gray for Emilie#Ovid’s Metamorphoses (my sister and I actually wrote a fic about it!)#L’Albatros by Charles Baudelaire (see: web weave)#Psychopompe by Amélie Nothomb (see: other web weave)#J’aime l’araignée et j’aime l’ortie by Victor Hugo#She walks in beauty by Byron for Kagami#East of Eden (I’ve yet to read it but the movie is one of my favourites to this day)#Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux#The Odyssey and EPIC#All of Magritte’s art but especially La Grande Famille & L’Empire des Lumières & La Trahison des Images#Stuart Semple’s entire vibe#I wonder what he’d think of Bauhaus art actually. The entire philosophy would create conflicting feelings I’m sure#Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns#Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor#He’d also prefer Salieri to Mozart while also detailing how Salieri actually made a name for himself every time the topic comes up#OH and he has the biggest crush on Milady de Winter#And Zagreus from Hades#miraculous ladybug#felix graham de vanily#tumblr asks

Sebastian Riemer (DE, Oberhausen, 1982, lives in Düsseldorf)
MAGRITTE 1 La Trahison des images 1922 MADE IN U.S.A. U.S.PAT. NO.3,013,354 3 MAR72H8, 2020 (The Images' Treason). Pigment print 90 × 90 cm
The slides from Sebastian Riemer's series were once used to represent the visual canon during lectures. Obsolete today, they have been replaced by digital images... The form of large scale ultra high resolution reproductions highlight the materiality and all the traces of time that were accumulated since then, revealing what we normally could not see

Those of us who love surrealism are old souls indeed. We are constantly struggling and seeking to shock reality , to impose our dreams ,our view ,our hidden meanings, obtained from the unconscious mind, because we live in parallel universes that must be shown to the common folk through paintings and sculptures,in order to bring the questioning of our reality through common subjects and objects.Surrealists have always had the look of mad and eccentric souls ,Dali was your typical example .My favorite though was Magritte. Words by Sergio GuymanProust.

Can we just take a second to appreciate how AMAZING this program from Zwolse Theaters is (where the Dutch CatCF Tour ran a few weeks ago) [design by Viesrood]
Like, it goes hard as-is but it's even BETTER when you know about the choices that were made for the Dutch Tour and how they are represented in this program.
[📸s by Nathalie Dekkers]
The designers of the Dutch Tour made the choice that Wonka should be an surrealist artist of sorts. (Which is why I'll forever be upset we didn't get Simply Second Nature in our soundtrack, it would've fit so well)
There are multiple references to 20th century surrealists, such as Salvador Dalí, but more explicitly: René Magritte. Especially in the Mixing Room there's a lot of references. The Giant Mixing Cup™ is... Well:
The Elephant design was based off Dalí's work, when you take a look at his 1948 work "Elephants", you'll see how.
When the Tour enters the Mixing Room, when only the Elephants head is shown, however, one of the first things Charlie says is "that's an elephant", to which Wonka replies by showing us what's written on the box surrounding it: "ceci n'est pas un éléphant." Probably the clearest art reference in the show: a reference to Magritte's 1929 painting La Trahison des Images.
It is in this room Wonka wears a different hat as well:
But wait! I recognise that hat from somewhere! Oh right! Magritte's famous Son Of Man (1964)
But, maybe even more clearly referenced by the program, Man in a Bowler Hat (1964)
And that's why I'm going absolutely feral over this program. They understood so well what vibe the Dutch Tour was going for and that's amazing.

Some perfumes make me want them simply for the bottle - this is Ceci n'est pas un Flacon Bleu 1.1 by Histoires de Parfums. This collection of perfums is named after René Magritte's La Trahison des Images (The Treachery of Images) painting which shows a pipe and the words Ceci n’est pas une pipe (This is not a pipe).
I've picked out five brands with beautiful bottles and chosen three fragrances from each brand, read more here.
