thinking about how to make the tankiest, most indestructible and also cheapest to run drift car.
i think for reliability and cheapness you put way less stress on your driveline and suspension with a lightweight car, so thats the first prerequisite. anything sub 1200kg is the way to go i reckon. the other huge factor with being lightweight means you can run smaller wheels and tyres, making the cost of disposables go down significantly. a set of 15″ 195 tyres is going to be cheaper than any set of 17″ 255s.
mechanically i reckon having a solid rear axle is the cheapest and burliest way forward. hilux 8″ diffs are cheap, readily available and theres heaps of aftermarket support, also theres just way less to brake. gearbox, i would say something like a W58 or T56, something that can take a lot of abuse without a problem. it would be worth getting a gearbox oil cooler also becuase if youre running lap after lap, youre going to be warming that box up alot and potentially shredding bearings or chipping syncros and gears.
engine wise, i think thats dependant on whats most available and something that only really needs to make about 250hp to be really fun. the L67 seems to be a pretty solid motor that makes good power for the price while also being extremely under-stressed and low revving, making it a good suit for a T56 box. if youre not feeling a buick motor in your drift car, i would say that anything with 6 cylinders could work. N/A 2JZ does the job pretty well and theyre in plentiful supply, but you could also go down the RB20DET route, or even just put an LS1 motor in there.
finally the chassis. something that will fit all of these criteria is not super common but it leaves us with 2 particular cars, an R31 skyline/pintara and an MX63 cressida. The R31 is the obvious option because they are essentially indestructible chassis’ from factory, you can run walls, tap fenders and doors all day long in one of these and it will still be dead straight. the issue there is that they are about 200kg too heavy for being cheap. you can get about 100kg out of the car im sure by swapping out the RB30E and putting something a bit lighter in there, and maybe stripping the interior, but theyre still tanks. the up side is that you can convert the front suspension to the cheapest of the cheap S13 stuff so you will always have parts for that. also the chassis is SUPER CHEAP, like next level cheap, you can pick up an auto pintara chassis for literally $200 and its identical to a big boy skyline chassis, albeit a little uglier, this makes it a cost effective starting point. if you wanted to go down this route i would recommend it without a second thought.
the MX63 though is almost right on the money: 1100kg, big engine bay, solid rear axle and they share a lot of the components with a, AE86. the issue however is the fact that they are starting to not exist. when they do come up for sale theyre normally pretty cheap, but theyre also rough as guts. there are a few die hard guys out there who love them, but really, compared to the R31, theyre not worth your time.
TL;DR R31 chassis stripped Hilux Diff S13 beefed up front end Engine swap, anything reasonably reliable. Truck Gearbox lil baby wheels and tyres
