BG3 did incredible at making the bad guys so incredibly sympathetic/empathetic honestly. Coming from someone who is so so so so insanely justice oriented, I feel BAD for all the villains and bad people in the game. I think they deserve better. I already made a post on Orin a second ago so now we're doing all the big bads because she reminded me how funny it is, for me who's so set on justice to be like "free my girl! she's not a good person or innocent I just think she deserves better" lol. So we're doing Gort's post!!!!!!!!!
Gortash was a normal child born to a poor family who couldn't handle it and, FREQUENTLY, told him he was a nasty child for being... a child. For sure he was being neglected, not just in the way of lack of food due to no money, but also socially so. So he turned to creating toys (productive instead of destructive!!!! good boy!) and they were... pissed? Oh, and remember, this little boy for sure had no friends so his only comfort was tinkering with scraps leftover from whatever projects his parents worked on in the shop.
And then, they sold Gortash to a fucking devil for some money (that hardly even did shit for them, imagine how angry he was to return and he saw them living the same life they led when he was a child, after HE was sent to HELL, so THEY could have a BETTER life and they didn't even fucking do that.) and he had to live his childhood in Hell, in constant abuse. How many gods do you think he prayed to, begging for freedom? And in this world, the gods are DEFINITIVELY real and listening, so how many gods do you think ignored him? Ignored an abused, sniffling child in the Hells, who up until this point has done nothing wrong and only wants to be safe, loved, and in a place he gets to tinker with some toys?
Whether you hate the man he became or not, just for a moment think of the child he was. Always told he was too bitchy and whiney for being a normal child, then sold to a devil, sent to Hell, abused to the point I honestly think it's a miracle he survived, ignored by tens of gods.
And then, he still had the strength to GET FREE, and find Bane, who made him even stronger. Made it so that HE'D never be the victim again. Made it so that he could not only never be the victim again, but that he'd thrive. That he'd be on top of the world.
Then he meets Durge, who I honestly believe to be his first friend (he, for sure, had no friends in his parents' home, and everyone in Raphael's House of Hope was either sentenced to do something weird, hated him, or just generally not his pal). And I also believe this to be vice versa as well. Durge has kinda been forced to kill everyone he loves, but Gortash, Gortash he CAN'T kill, because for once, Bhaal sees a man that's important to his own plan, sees a man that he can let Durge befriend because it's better for the plan. So they become friends, and I for sure believe that they were both manipulating each in the beginning but actually became REAL friends eventually (maybe even always manipulating each other, but in a mutual, "I see what you're doing and I raise your mild manipulation to major manipulation" back and forth, almost playful way). And they totally fucked, but I'm trying to be kinda unbiased here, so whether they were more than fuck buddies or not is not important here, but they WERE friends in my opinion. Not even in my opinion, it's fact, "He did miss this" is a legit quote from the narrator after succeeded an insight check. They respected each other, saw each other in ways they saw no other, because no other was so fucked up and evil that he could go "I killed a man yesterday" and be responded to in kind. Anyone else, and their stomach would turn. But they've found their other half in a way, a man of mental strength, self control (...ish), and general respectability. Someone they can both rant to without judgement! Truly, who else would listen to these two men rant about what they've done, WITHOUT setting the guards on them? Also, Durge was formidable and had Gortash's same goals so he liked that. Durge also knew to keep personal things and business separate, so even if he and Gortash had arguments and such outside of The Planℱ, they managed to keep it under the table and focus on The Plan when important and Gortash liked that even more.
But this post is supposed to be less about Durge so anyway, then Ketheric's added to the mix and Ketheric doesn't share their ideals so much but when he's being kept busy, he's at least a good work dog in Gortash's eyes. The Plan's all coming together now, and Gortash is busy and stressed no doubt, but he's no one's victim, the world is in his hands, and he has a friend! It's perfect.
And then his friend disappears, and Durge's annoying little sister replaces him. But he knows to keep personal stuff and business stuff separated, so he tolerates her, binds her blades, and has to shoulder a bit more of the plan now (do you really think Orin is willing to be civil at all and talk through details of the plane with Gortash like Durge would? She's doing her part of the plan well and scaring the sheep into Gortash's protection BUT she's not going above and beyond like I think Durge did, so he's left to his own devices to sort through shit.)
And now!!! His buddy's back!!!!!! THANK GOD YOU'RE BACK DURGE I MISSED YOU I mean hello now you can kill your stupid little annoying sister and- why do you have a certain tiefling with you. dear god you're consorting with peasants Durge. you were so strong and cool before what are you DOING buddy. Even funnier if Durge is romantically involved w Karlach and adores her, because I PUT HER IN HELL AND NOW MY PRECIOUS LITTLE FRIEND IS KISSING HER WHEN THEY SHOULD BE KISSING ME I mean when they should be focusing on The Planℱ. Even, even, even funnier if Durge is total resist and refuses to make a plan with Gort, because he totally thinks they're going to come to their senses eventually, and instead they just. kill him. At one point, he even says "No. You have to stop her. Do it! Now!", because he still believes Durge is on his side and would totally stop Karlach. After all, why wouldn't they when they "share so much history"?
But also, if they're a resist Durge but still w the plan... he's happy for them. Imo, ACTUALLY happy for them. He's like "oh you left your father? wonderful! now you don't have any master or urges to bind you and we can finally focus on getting that damned netherbrain back in our hands!" but he's cool w embraced durge too. because either way, as long as you have a pact w him, he's safe in his mind w you and he's happy you're taking over the brain with him. And he's totally willing to share his kingdom w you. In fact, he WANTS to rule together as kings, which in Bane's rulebook is the first bad thing ever. He's being a BAD Banite, just because he's kinda lonely and wants someone to rule w in my opinion. But not just anyone, someone Coolℱ and probably evil so he can be like "my slaves over there are being so annoying" and then have his buddy respond w sympathy. ....Sympathy for him, not the slaves. Which. Is fucking awful and I'm glad he's not real for that fact. But anyway
If you follow through w the pact, and reach the boat and everything, he lets you hit him once funnily enough. And he responds so childishly, by kicking you back! It's so funny to me
And briefly off topic, but I believe he's so childish because the way he grew up sort of stunted his maturity. Like, he's smart enough and charismatic enough that he can put on a good face for the public eye, but the second alone he's biting his pillow, having massive tantrums when shit goes sideways, having his guards sentenced to death if they stare at him weirdly, essentially doing everything an angry child would when they've been "wronged" in their eyes
Now back to topic, you reach the brain and it immediately fucking kills him. For a man so set on being in control, no longer being anyone's victim, finally being free to do what he wants... it's ironic he dies in this way. And though he's, for sure, a completely fucked up dude, it's a little bit sad to me honestly.

About Redemption stories - and Enver Gortash
Tumblr media
I decided to be a bit self-indulgent today and write about this a bit more.
As some people might know: I am currently kinda hyperfocusing on writing a redemption story for our dear wanna-be tyrant from Baldur's Gate 3.
This originally started out mainly as me being kinda pissed about the fact that a) the game does not really have a happy end for Karlach, and b) that you could not convince Gortash to give up even though from his perspective it should be the logical thing to do, given that he should realize at the point that he has no chance winning that fight. And also: I played a fucking bard with +18 on persuasion at that point, and I got kinda annoyed with the game for not allowing me to persuade Gortash after destroying the guard. Especially given how ridiculously easy his bossfight is.
So, originally all of that happened completely out of those reasons - I wrote an alternate ending in which he lived but was put under house arrest, because duh. And originally I kinda left it at that, because... yeah. Let's face it. There are villains in stories, that kinda ask to be redeemed. My other big fandom is Castlevania - mainly the Netflix series - and pretty much all the villains there are cut out for redemption, and many of them do actually have some redemption in the show happen.
And I mainly write for some of those. Mainly Hector, Isaac, Striga and Morana, all of whom are at least partly antagonists in the show.
Because I freaking love good redemption stories. And also one of my hobbies is to rant about the redemption stories we get in media, mainly because a lot of it puts more focus on character making those big gestures (like almost or completely sacrificing themselves and such) rather than going more into how the character realizes the evil they had done and such.
So, at some point I looked at Gortash, this pathetic asshole of a man, and I thought to myself: "Huh, what would it take for this asshole to admit he had been in the wrong?" Because from all I had written at that point (which was Hurt begets Hurt and Cheesy Noodles) he very much was of the opinion that sure, maybe things he had done had not been nice - but they had been his right, because people were shitty to him, so why should he not be shitty to other people. Again, his giving up was mainly just him not wanting to die and realizing that in the situation he had no chance to get out of that situation alive. (And also Tav promising him, that he could just get away - which mind you, Tav actually meant, but Tav had kinda forgotten at the moment, that Ravengard was hanging out at the camp, and Ravengard would be obviously like: "How about no?" And in fact putting Gortash under house arrest, rather than having him executed was a compromise that was won only after Wyll unhappily sided with Tav.)
And so... the "depressed Gortash" storyline - as some people have called it - was born. Basically going into two core ideas:
Gortash was only a Chosen because of the second sundering, and while Bane was kinda fine with it as long as Gorts was winning, he instantly pulled his support for Gorts, once the guy lost. (We know in the game when Gorts dies, Bane punishes him for losing, too.)
Without a purpose or anything, Gortash's mental health takes a big ass nosedive afterwards and he is bloody miserable.
Throw into this mixture my Tav, who himself is a survivor of a ton of abuse, who has the core believe that outside of devils and some gods, there is no true evil in this world. This man will stop people from killing monsters, because the monster could theoretically be just nice, but misunderstood. xD So, Tav feels a lot of pity for Gortash and the abuse the man has suffered, and he is of the firm opinion that Gortash's soul can be saved. And he tries to convince Gortash to try and be a nice person for once.
Now, my Tav is - just like my interpretation of Gortash - on the autistic spectrum. However, kinda on opposite ends of it. My Tav is autistic, yes, but the very social kind of autistic person. (Or to put it differently: He is a total and absolute people pleaser, who has core values he will always prioritize, but also fears that people could not like him.) While Gortash very much is not. And Gortash, who is bad at reading other people, and also in his life has basically never had any relationship that was not somehow dominated by fear of being abused/backstabbed, looks at the guy and goes: "Okay, either this dude is shitting me, or he is the biggest gods darn idiot who ever existed, and the only reason he is here is to make me aware of the fact that I was defeated by the biggest idiot that ever existed!" Which to me as a writer is hilarious - but in a very whumpy way xD
The aspect, that I decided to go with in the end is, that while Gortash is really bad at relating and empathizing to people, he somewhat kinda does know that he did the exact thing to Karlach, that his parents did to him. And despite him struggling to admit it, he actually at some point liked Karlach. So, yes, if he is fully honest with himself, he can understand that this specific thing he did was a bad thing, actually.
And everything else has to come from there. Partly also from the very logical analysis of: he is aware of how fictional stories go. And he has enough awareness to understand, that someone who does the stuff he does, usually gets to be the antagonist in those stories - and hence would be seen as evil. So the rational thing is to assume that yes, indeed, he did bad.
But yeah. It is so interesting to me to write this and explore the redemption of a villain, who does not instantly see that yeah, they might have done wrong. And he needs a long while to see it.
(Also: yes, this is also absolutely me being a prison abolitionist who does not think that a system of law that punishes does any good for anyone. Because yeah, guess what: Nobody who was killed is alive, just because the bad guy is inprisoned or executed.)

I only reblogged your durgetash college au like an hour ago but it has not left my mind since... it's so stunning and I feel like this kind of au will take over my entire life and I'm so tempted to write something... do you have any headcanons for funsies....... my immediate thought was rival college societies where durge and gortash are presidents of their respective socieities but gortash wants to become student president... also pls free to ignore if I sound insane lol but your art made my entire day <3
Dude u don't even know I have like 3 pages worth of headcanons for this shit
Long ass rant below:
My au is incredibly similar to Canon in that all the gods still exist, although for fun some of them are gods like in canon, but some are just very powerful people. Mystra for example is just gale's ex teacher, but the dead 3 r still gods.
So while the two were initially rivals (they're both far too ambitious, it was inevitable) they eventually find out that the other runs an identical underground worshipping-evil-deity-club, and realise they will get a lot more shit done if they do it together.
Gort is a business student and durge is a philosophy student (durge is such a nepo baby, he just chose something that would allow him to piss off the most people - he enjoys playing devil's advocate in philosophy debates. Deep down, he actually really enjoys learning about different philosophies and how other people experience the world)
In this au ketheric is a post-grad student who works as a TA in durge's philosophy lectures, and he sees how much potential is in both gort and durge but that doesn't change that fact that he finds them ridiculously irritating lol. He finds out they worship the other 2 of the dead 3 and tries to help them keep it all undercover cus lord knows they're just over-confident (read: idiotic) uni students
I have yet to figure out how to translate 'world domination' into a feasible university activity lmfao, and I know I want to include durge's memory loss in this au but I'm not sure how to write that either
Anyway I have a lot of headcanons about all the other characters and their backstories/relationships but I wanna try and get that all put out in art form, so u just wait lol

Terminator: 10 Hilarious Memes Only True Fans Will Understand – Screen Rant
With Terminator: Dark Fate coming out next month, many fans are concerned about the future of this long-standing franchise. The fact that it’s still going is impressive, which demonstrates how relevant these films are in relation to our growing dependence on technology and the advancement of AI.
RELATED: 5 Things The Terminator Did Better Than Terminator 2 (And 5 Things T2 Did Better)
Spanning several decades, the Terminator franchise began as a stand-alone ’80s action film that served as the directorial debut for James Cameron and features one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most iconic performances. Then following several sequels a remake and a TV show, its legacy is further demonstrated in these hilarious memes.

10 Where Men Cried
When it comes to showing emotions, there’s always a double-standard between the genders. For instance, women are expected to be more emotional than men by societal standards. Thus, they are theoretically more prone to being easily swayed by tear-jerking movies like The Notebook.
But as this meme points out, there are certain movies that arguably make men just as emotional as women. One of those is Terminator 2: Judgement Day, which made the T-800 Terminator (Schwarzenegger’s character) more sympathetic than the cold-blooded killer from the first movie The Terminator. So this meme becomes hilarious because it goes against the standard notion that men don’t cry while women do.
9 I’ll Bee Back
Aside from the intense action scenes and decent practical effects that still hold up today, The Terminator also had some memorable lines. Though arguably the one almost everyone knows is “I’ll be back,” which Schwarzenegger’s T-800 says before breaking into a police station with a car to get to Sarah Connor.
So this meme turns that iconic line into a pun related to bees while also photoshopping a beekeeping suit over The Terminator poster image. Thus, it makes the T-800 less intimidating than when he’s sporting the black leather biker look. Plus, the idea of a cyborg programmed to kill people dealing with bees is a hilarious notion in itself.

8 Is This A Terminator?
Following The Terminator, the notion of humanoid robots took on a more sinister edge with the public in spite of predecessors such as Gort from The Day The Earth Stood Still. So now, whenever a humanoid robot shows up people automatically associate them with Terminators which this meme makes fun of.
RELATED: 10 Hidden Details Everyone Missed In The Original Terminator
Yet this meme becomes more hilarious if one knows the anime this screenshot was taken from. Titled The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird, this early 90s anime was about an alien android named Yutaro Katori who transforms into a fighting robot. But the reason this anime’s relevant is because there’s a scene where Katori mistakes a butterfly for a pigeon, which recently got turned into a popular meme.
7 “Don’t Interrupt Me”
While people do associate humanoid robots that are being developed in the real world with Terminators, they also like to compare them with other fictional robots. Hence this meme where an image of C-3PO from the Star Wars franchise slowly transitions into a Terminator.
A major component of this meme’s hilarity is the visual representation of C-3PO getting irritated at being interrupted while he’s trying to talk. This makes sense as C-3PO does talk a lot in the movies, and gets easily irritated, particularly with R2-D2. Plus, if we interpreted the meme literally it implies C-3PO’s going to eliminate whoever’s interrupting him which is funny because it’s something he normally wouldn’t do.

6 Salvation Is Here
Following the surprising success of Terminator 2 and its direct sequel Terminator 3, the franchise was taken in a new direction with Terminator Salvation. Set in the distant future, the film focused on Sarah’s son John Connor leading the human resistance against the machine empire created by the AI Skynet.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t as big of a hit as people had hoped and seemingly killed off the Terminator movie franchise until Genisys came along. Yet there are a few people who did like the film, as parodied in this meme using a screenshot of Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War. Though what makes this meme particularly hilarious is the quote as it’s a pun on the title of the fourth Terminator movie.
5 Just A Few More Years
In just about every entry of the Terminator franchise, the main conflict involves humans having to outsmart and destroy the titular cyborg(s). Because despite being made of flesh and blood on the outside, their internal skeletons are metallic and extremely durable, regardless of the model.
RELATED: 10 Sci-Fi Movies That Got the Future Really Wrong
Though the tagline in this meme over a screenshot of Kyle Reese from The Terminator is hilarious because it plays into the notion that machines eventually break down after a few years. With that said, the T-800 functions for 120 years which is only 20 years above the longest possible human lifespan. Still, the meme’s hilarity is in its simple solution to the ongoing conflict in the Terminator movies.
advertising
4 Sleeping On Your Hand
As we toss and turn physically in our sleep, we never know what position our bodies will be in after getting up. Sometimes, though, we end up sleeping on our hand by accident causing it to go numb as a result.
The feeling that follows is perfectly represented in this meme, which uses a screenshot of the T-800 looking at his exposed metallic arm in The Terminator. Combined with the tagline, though, it becomes hilarious. Because effectively, the meme turns a very menacing scene from the movie into more of a trivial matter that’s relatable, as exemplified in the T-800’s expression.
3 Kevin Feige’s Fears
Compared to other superhero movies, Avengers: Endgame officially became the highest-grossing film of all time. As a result, it surpassed Avatar and Titanic which were both directed by James Cameron following his success with the Terminator movies.
So the joke in this meme is that Kevin Feige, Endgame’s producer, is paranoid Cameron might recreate the events of The Terminator in real life and prevent Endgame from happening. Not only is the implication funny since it won’t happen, but also Thor’s expressions match the words perfectly. Plus, the fact that these screenshots are taken from Avengers: Age of Ultron makes it more hilarious since the movie deals with a killer AI.
advertising
2 CAPTCHA Test
Due to the existence of bots, which are automated programs that hackers can use, many websites enforce their security by having users take CAPTCHA Tests before logging on. These involve selecting tiles in pictures that contain particular images in order to theoretically authenticate a person from a ‘robot’ as they put it.
However, these tests aren’t as easy as they look as the programming behind them is very precise. Thus, there’s a high chance of failing them, though they have gotten easier. So this meme makes fun of that notion by implying the user who keeps failing to pass the CAPTCHA Test is a robot, or a Terminator in this case, which makes it hilarious.
1 Who’s Next?
Though the actress who played as Sarah Connor has been mostly consistent in the movies, there were a couple of instances where she was portrayed by someone else. But the biggest irony is that both of the other actresses who portrayed Sarah were also in Game of Thrones.
Hence, this meme that shows Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke as Sarah in the Terminator TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the reboot film Terminator Genisys respectively. Additionally, it poses the question of which other Game of Thrones actors might show up in future Terminator films. This question, in turn, becomes hilarious as the meme photoshops different Game of Thrones characters as Terminator ones.
