The Annotated Anne of Green Gables ~~ a special rereading
CHAPTER V ~~ Anne's History
"Finally Mrs. Thomas said she'd take me, though she was poor and had a drunken husband. She brought me up by hand. Do you know if there is anything in being brought up by hand that ought to make people who are brought up that way better than other people? Because whenever I was naughty Mrs. Thomas would ask me how I could be such a bad girl when she had brought me up by hand -- reproachful-like."
When I first read this passage, I assumed the phrase 'by hand' was meant in a positive sense. That was the only way that I had heard it used before. So, for some reason, I thought that Mrs. Thomas must be decent enough to raise Anne 'by hand.' Although it is described and implied a few passages later that she was not. So, this passage just confused me. Now, this could have been obvious to everyone else. Still, I just realized that it is very probable (I don't even want to say probable because I am like 99% percent sure that this is the case) that it is referring to corporal punishment. Realizing the second meaning of 'by hand,' this passage takes on a new meaning for me in Anne's past and future. Let me be clear: I realized that Anne was accustomed to corporal punishment, but I had never seen it clearly in the text before. She even questions whether corporal punishment makes people better than those raised without it. This plays a lot into her decision to not use corporal punishment in the classroom (well, mostly...) while teaching in Avonlea. I guess she really did realize that being punished in this manner does, in fact, not make a person better. While maybe this is meant as how I first interpreted it, as Mrs. Thomas being really involved in Anne's upbringing positively, after seeing this new meaning, I can not go back.
I usually try to use photos that relate to what I am talking about, but...not today. So, I used photos that appear in the book. On the left is Park Corner Shore in the 1890s, an inspiration for the 'shore road' Anne and Marilla go by. On the right is L.M. Montgomery's birthplace in Clifton, 1880s. Montgomery used her birthplace as an inspiration for Anne's.

The Power of Adaptive Learning: Saving Time and Money
In the fast-paced world of education and corporate training, both time and money are precious commodities. This is why adaptive learning has become a revolutionary solution in modern learning environments. By leveraging data-driven technology, adaptive learning personalizes the learning experience, allowing learners to progress at their own pace and helping organizations and educational institutions maximize their resources. In this article, we will explore what adaptive learning is, the different types of platforms and tools available, and how they can help save both time and money.
What is Adaptive Learning?
Adaptive learning refers to a learning methodology that adjusts the educational experience based on individual learner needs, abilities, and progress. The system uses real-time data to assess a learner's strengths and weaknesses, adapting the content accordingly to ensure that the learner receives appropriate material. The key idea is that not all learners are the same, so personalized learning paths provide the most effective approach to mastering new information.
At its core, adaptive learning involves the use of algorithms and data analytics to modify learning experiences based on user input, making learning more efficient and tailored. For example, if a student struggles with a specific concept, the system might provide additional resources or alter the way the topic is presented to ensure the student has a solid understanding before moving forward.
This personalization helps avoid wasting time on material that the learner already knows, enabling them to focus on areas where they need the most improvement. It also ensures that learners don’t feel overwhelmed by information that is too advanced for their current level.
Adaptive Learning Platforms: Transforming Education
Adaptive learning platforms are software solutions designed to deliver personalized learning experiences to students. These platforms integrate various tools and technologies to monitor learner performance and automatically adjust content delivery. Some platforms are more general in nature, while others may focus on specific areas, such as language learning or STEM subjects.
A key feature of these platforms is their ability to collect data on learners' interactions, such as how long they spend on specific tasks, how often they answer questions correctly, and where they are making mistakes. By analyzing this data, the platform can then tailor the content and offer real-time feedback to students, ensuring they are constantly engaged with content that meets their learning needs.
Some popular adaptive learning platforms include:
Knewton: Known for its ability to create personalized learning paths for students based on their individual performance.
DreamBox Learning: An interactive math program that adapts its lessons according to how well students are doing.
McGraw-Hill Education’s ALEKS: A math and chemistry learning platform that uses adaptive learning to assess and help students develop skills.
These platforms not only make learning more efficient but also provide instructors with detailed insights into student progress, enabling better-targeted interventions.
Adaptive Learning Software: Enhancing Learner Engagement
Adaptive learning software encompasses a range of applications designed to facilitate adaptive learning experiences. These applications are typically more interactive and focused on delivering engaging content that meets each learner’s unique needs. The software uses algorithms to track a learner’s progress and adjust the difficulty or content based on the learner’s performance.
Many adaptive learning software solutions are compatible with existing Learning Management Systems (LMS) or can be used as standalone tools. These software solutions are often used in both K-12 education settings and corporate training programs.
Some examples of adaptive learning software include:
Smart Sparrow: This software allows educators to create adaptive, personalized courses for students in higher education.
Squirrel AI Learning: An AI-powered software that adapts to student progress and provides a highly personalized learning experience.
Lingvist: A language-learning software that adapts its content to help users learn more effectively and efficiently.
By using adaptive learning software, both students and educators can benefit from a more dynamic and tailored educational experience.
Adaptive Learning Apps: Learning on the Go
With the rise of mobile learning, adaptive learning apps have become increasingly popular. These apps allow learners to access personalized content anytime, anywhere, making learning more flexible and convenient. Adaptive learning apps adjust their content based on user input and progress, offering tailored lessons that suit the learner's needs.
Some well-known adaptive learning apps include:
Duolingo: A language-learning app that adjusts its lessons based on the learner's progress and proficiency.
Quizlet: While primarily a flashcard app, Quizlet uses adaptive learning to help users memorize information by focusing on the cards they struggle with the most.
Khan Academy: This app provides personalized learning experiences in subjects like math, science, and humanities, adapting content to suit the learner's current skill level.
Mobile learning with adaptive learning apps ensures that students can keep learning, even outside the classroom, allowing for continuous progress and reinforcing key concepts when necessary.
Adaptive Learning Tools: Optimizing Learning Experiences
Adaptive learning tools refer to the various functionalities and features that enable the delivery of personalized learning experiences. These tools are typically integrated into adaptive learning platforms or software and may include things like quizzes, progress trackers, interactive lessons, and more. They allow instructors to customize the learning experience to meet the specific needs of individual students, maximizing their chances of success.
Some commonly used adaptive learning tools include:
Quizzes and assessments: These tools allow for real-time assessment of learner progress, enabling the platform to adjust content accordingly.
Gamification elements: Adding game-like features (such as points, levels, and badges) can enhance student motivation and engagement.
Progress trackers: These tools help learners and instructors visualize their advancement, helping them stay on track and motivated.
Instant feedback: Immediate responses to student input help them identify areas for improvement and keep them engaged in the learning process.
These tools help create a highly interactive, engaging, and effective learning environment, contributing to a more personalized and efficient educational experience.
Adaptive Learning Technology: The Future of Education
The backbone of adaptive learning is technology. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data analytics have made it possible to offer a more personalized and responsive learning experience. Adaptive learning technology allows for real-time adjustments to learning material, ensuring that learners are continually challenged but not overwhelmed.
Some of the key technologies driving adaptive learning include:
Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI algorithms are used to analyze learner behavior and adapt content to meet their needs. This ensures that learning is tailored and efficient.
Machine Learning: Machine learning algorithms can learn from learner data and continually improve the adaptability of the system.
Natural Language Processing (NLP): NLP is used in many adaptive learning applications to process and understand human language, making the learning experience more intuitive.
With continuous advancements in adaptive learning technology, the future of education is likely to see even more personalized, efficient, and engaging learning experiences for both students and professionals.
Adaptive Learning LMS: Learning Management Systems with a Personal Touch
An Adaptive Learning Learning Management System (LMS) integrates adaptive learning principles into traditional learning management systems. These systems use algorithms to personalize the learning experience for each student. An LMS can track learner behavior, gather performance data, and suggest the most relevant content based on this information.
Some LMS providers have incorporated adaptive learning features, including:
Canvas by Instructure: This platform offers adaptive learning tools to personalize learning experiences.
Moodle: An open-source LMS with various plugins that allow for adaptive learning integration.
Blackboard: A popular LMS that includes adaptive learning tools to create personalized learning paths for students.
By using an adaptive learning LMS, educational institutions can enhance student engagement, improve learning outcomes, and make better use of resources.
Adaptive Online Learning: A Flexible Approach to Education
Adaptive online learning refers to the use of online platforms and tools to provide personalized learning experiences. With the help of adaptive learning technologies, online courses can tailor content to meet the needs of each student, making learning more efficient and effective.
In online learning, adaptive learning systems can provide instant feedback, offer personalized resources, and adjust the pace of lessons based on student progress. This flexibility allows students to learn at their own pace, ensuring that they don’t fall behind or rush through material unnecessarily.
Some examples of adaptive online learning platforms include:
Coursera: Offers personalized learning experiences through courses that adapt to each learner's progress.
Edmentum: Provides online learning solutions with built-in adaptive learning features to personalize the experience.
How Adaptive Learning Saves Time and Money
Adaptive learning has the potential to save both time and money for learners, educators, and organizations. By personalizing learning, adaptive learning platforms can eliminate wasted time on unnecessary content, reduce the time spent on remedial learning, and increase overall efficiency. Learners progress at their own pace, focusing on areas that need improvement while mastering topics they already understand.
From a financial perspective, adaptive learning platforms reduce the need for traditional face-to-face tutoring and one-size-fits-all learning materials, cutting costs significantly. For organizations, adaptive learning can increase employee productivity and reduce training time, offering a more efficient and cost-effective approach to learning and development.
