July 7th 1575 saw “The Raid of the Redeswire”

This has a number of names, The battle of Carter’s Bar, The Redswire Fray being another two, it has been described as a skirmish in what should have been a run-of-the-mill Warden’s meeting had been arranged between John Carmichael, the Keeper of Liddesdale, and the English Middle March Warden, Sir John Forster. It’s also been described as the last major battle between Scotland and England, I would hardly call it a battle, although we (The Scots) did give them a good beating that day!.

There would have been fines to be paid, men to be handed over to answer for their crimes, and paperwork to be exchanged. It is unlikely that either side had considered an all-out fight. Things seems to have gone well enough, until the case of one individual was raised. Carmichael demanded that he was handed over, Forster denied knowledge of his whereabouts, which was not believed. Insults were exchanged and then the entire meeting descended into violence. The skirmish seemed to have gone the Scots way due to the the fact that the English mainly fought with bows and swords, but the Scots were armed with firearms as well as more traditional weapons.

Of course it wouldn't be a Borders story without oor Walter Scott writing about the Skirmish n the first edition of the Minstrelsy of 1802

“Some gaed to drink and some stude still And some to cards and dice them sped Till on ane Farnstein they fyled a bill And he was fugitive and fled. Then was there nought but bow and speir And every man pulled out a brand; "A Schafton and a Fenwick” thare: Gude Symington was slain frae hand.“

Farnstein, is said to be the man the English were after, however local tradition states that it was a man by the name of Henry Robson, official papers of the time don’t identify the man.

Anyway the story goes that the Scots were forced to retreat, but during their flight they met up with another group from Jedburgh, who were late to the meeting.This gave the Scots an advantage. They began to break the English lines and in time, the English were routed. The English second in command, George Heron was killed, along with his brother John and 23 other Englishmen. Forster and several other nobles were captured, and the Scots conducted an impromptu raid, taking 300 cattle from local farms., well it would be rude not to!

Prisoners were taken by the Scots, and brought to James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, who was the regent for King James VI. This soon became embarrassing for the Scots, as the prisoners, who were being held at Dalkeith Castle, had likely been taken for their ransom value, although Douglas stated that it was to keep them from being killed in the heat of battle. [He wrote a letter to Queen Elizabeth describing the events, but she was outraged and sent William Killigrew to demand immediate "satisfaction" from the Earl of Morton. Douglas was directed to meet with George Hastings, 4th Earl of Huntingdon, who was the lieutenant of the northern counties, to work out the details, and the two men were able to come to an amicable solution, as Douglas didn’t want to anger Elizabeth, and she wanted to avoid a war.

Forster and the others had been treated with kindness and were released with gifts and an apology for being held.

Carmichael was delivered to York as a prisoner for trial, but was acquitted as the English court found that Forster had engaged in an unprovoked attack.

The picture shows a monument known as the Redeswire Stone built in commemoration of the battle. It reads, "On this ridge, July 7th, 1575 was fought one of the last border raids, known as The Raid of the Redeswire”

Hermitage Castle

Hermitage Castle has been guarding Liddesdale for centuries.

In October 1566, Mary Queen of Scots embarked on a dramatic ride here from Jedburgh.

On the gruelling journey back to Jedburgh, Mary’s horse stumbled, throwing her into a bog, from which she contracted a fever.

She was confined to bed in Jedburgh for a week, and it was said she was fortunate to recover from her ordeal.

On 5th July 1530 Border reiver, John Armstrong of Gilnockie, up to 50, (numbers vary) of his men were hanged for blackmail by James V.

Even by the brutal standards of the day, this must have been a horrific event.

John Armstrong of Gilnockie near Langholm was a famous Scottish border reiver ( raider ) and infamous plunderer and cattle 'lifter' from the powerful Armstrong family along the lawless Scottish Border with England in the early 16th Century, and the subject of a well known Border Ballad - 'The Ballad of Johnnie Armstrong'. He raided into England when Scotland was in the ascendancy and would raid into Scotland as power shifted. He led a band of a hundred and sixty men.

The ballad relates that the king sends him a letter, requesting his presence in court and promising him safety. Johnnie is fooled by this honor and orders his men to dress richly, as befits the court. On their arrival, the king tries to arrest them, and Armstrong orders them to fight. They are all killed, although Johnnie is brought down only by a treacherous attack from behind.

The actual events differ, Johnnie was indeed tricked by Scotland's King James V, but there was no fight. Johnnie was captured and hanged with his men at Caerlanrig in 1529.

Being the reivers that they were, you can be sure that the Armstrongs had their revenge. Twelve years later, in 1542, James V was to die, some say of a broken heart, following the rout of the Scottish army at the Battle of Solway Moss which took place eight days after the birth of his daughter, Mary, Queen of Scots. Some of the Armstrongs joined the English army in dealing a mortal blow to the Scots as they vainly tried to cross the river Esk at Longtown. It was the Armstrongs who picked off the remnants of the Scots army as they fled in panic north through Liddesdale.

Week 45 - 21/11/22

During this week at my Barbour placement, I followed up on admin stuff in regards to last weeks launch. As SS24 had been neglected by the team as we were preparing for the launch week, I began the week by naming the styles which previously hadn’t been, using the SS24 style naming document I had created at the start of the season.

At the end of launch week, our product development manager had typed up all the sales notes for the product which they were shown, which then were put into work for any changes which sales felt was necessary to get the best sale of the product. Due to the stage of development of the season, these changes are never dramatically changing the garment more just changes in trims or sometimes colourways, such as the Floral lining being dropped in Country and updated to the new Gardenia Check lining.

As well as this, we began to get fabric standards in for SS24 PRE and MAIN. These were looked at by design and signed off by the fabric team, I then filed these away in their respective place for future reference. We also had lab dyes for new colourways being put into work, these are looked at by the designers and fabric team to see if they match the pantone/swatch on the colourboard as well as seeing if the designers actually might prefer the colour outcome of these dyes instead of what they had previously selected. This is carried out on all of the fabrics which the designer wishes to use in the range.

Another thing which we needed to do for SS24 is update the Must Have styles. The styles which needed to be amended were the classic Barbour styles such as the Annadale Quilt or the Liddesdale Quilt, these styles were updated to have new colourways relevant to this season, with the previous seasons colourways being dropped. Usually, these styles take the colourways of Country and Coast to Country as they are more traditional Barbour ranges, with this season it being Bayleaf for Country and Calico and Hessian for Coast to Country - using these ranges for colour reference really ties in Barbour’s colour stories.

Finally, I began to set up the Pinterest boards for AW24 as we are going into AW22 incase anyone in the team sees any inspirational design ideas they want to explore.
