69 years ago, on this day in 1954, newspapers began reporting on the breakdown of security firings during the Second Red Scare and Lavender Scare, in which LGBTQ people were painted as security risks for being "easily blackmailed" by communist spies. Eisenhower would initially resist calls by media to release a breakdown of the firings, which without figures was exaggerated by leaders of the fear-mongering such as Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin who even claimed that 90% of the firings were communists. Breakdowns released showed at most 15% were security related. Around 200 were fired for "perversion" which included being LGBTQ.

The incomparable Pamela Sneed pays tribute to Big Mama Thornton, the original performer of "Hound Dog" which sold over 500,000 copies, the most at that time for a Black woman. Hope the show comes back to Joe's Pub!

A collection of vintage photographs of gay and lesbian couples from 1900 to 1960 celebrates love and pride during a period when coming out was risky. These photographs show couples posed in hand in hand and embracing each other with happiness. Happy Pride Month!

For too long history has relied on bigotry over facts to create a heroic narrative of Great (straight white) Men. Victorian historians deliberately ghosted the leading #lgbtqia #women & non-Anglo Saxon #black #torchbearers from the pages of British History & up until now nothing substantial has been done to redress this prejudice! It’s time to breath life into the ghosted LGBTQIA non-Anglo Saxon & women of #history ! LGBTQIA+ Pride Hero At the height of the AIDS Cisis, in a very conservative city, Michael Chanak insisted that a large company add LGBT employees to their diversity statements. This is a #repost from @greatbigstory via @PhotoAroundApp Words matter. And at the height of the AIDS epidemic, in one of the most conservative cities in America, Michael Chanak spoke out to make sure the LGBT community was a part of the story. By fighting to include sexual orientation into P&G’s diversity statements, Michael left a legacy that lives on 25 years later. Watch the whole film at GreatBigStory.com via the link in our bio. Charlotte Cushman broke barriers on and off stage. During the mid-1800s, she was celebrated as the “greatest living actress.” Like many other female actresses, she performed both female and male roles. Female actresses playing male roles was popular with male theater-goers, as male costumes usually included tights that revealed the actress’ legs. However, Cushman’s male costumes were even less revealing than her female ones, as you can see in these costumes for Cardinal Wolsey (a male role) and Queen Katharine. Her popularity came from her performance, not her appearance. Off stage, Cushman funded and lived in a community of what she and her friends called "jolly female bachelors" or "emancipated women" who were known for producing art, wearing men's clothing, and lobbying for working women. All of the romantic relationships documented in her personal papers were with women. #WomensHistory #🎭 #TheaterHistory #Pride #PrideMonth #LGBTQHistory #LGBTQIAHistory #AmericanHistory #CostumeHistory #BecauseOfHerStory http://bit.ly/2X7CZkm

It was a privilege to be given a platform by Zoe @slingshotldn for my campaign to breath life back into the #lgbtqia of history ghosted by straight white male historians to create a heroic narrative of Great (straight white) Men which needs to be challenged! The world is presently engaged in the same ethical tug of war as Britain & Ireland faced in 1603-1642 against the backdrop of plague. The vocal & violent #puritan zealots used propaganda, paranoia & bigotry to persecute & demean the #lgbtqia torchbearers ushering in the #freedoms #justice #equality #cultural advances & #newideas that fuelled the Modern Age via the Baroque & Scientific Revolution. Ultimately the Puritan zealots fury at the ascendancy of LGBTQIA women & men plunged Britain & Ireland into civil wars & on 6th Dec 1648 via a military coup-d’etat ordered by General Oliver Cromwell #democracy was demolished & the Magna Carta banned. Cromwell’s Puritan Military Dictatorship subsequently oppressed the people & carried out the most deliberate & wide scale, moral & ethnic cleansing Via his program of genocides against LGBTQIA & non-Anglo-Saxons in history. A statue of Cromwell - “Father of European Fascism” currently stands outside our Parliament despite an almost unanimous vote against it in 1898. Ulster Unionist party secretly erected the statue in the middle of the night. It has yet to be removed despite repeated calls from British & International bodies who have expressed distress over Cromwell’s ruthless genocides which remain the playbook for fascists - Hitler not only idolised him but based his genocides against Jews LGBTQIA Polish & non-anglosaxon races on Cromwell’s methods. The parallels between the Jacobean & Caroline Eras & the Puritan Military Dictatorship & the current demands for equality, justice & change are chilling. #lgbtqiahistory #blackhistorymatters #queerhistorymatters #womenshistorymatters https://www.instagram.com/p/CDSFZMMgPJ6/?igshid=8a6dj0f2d1q1

Who’s ready for a parade? This month, across the country, people will participate in Pride parades. Pride marches often trace their roots to 1970. The first New York Pride March was held in 1970. Also known as the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, the demonstration took place on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. “We stretched out as far as I could see, thousands of us,” recalled participant Fred Sargent. Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco held Pride events that same weekend. In 1970, the Los Angeles event was the only parade, all the other events were marches. These demonstrations have continued and changed since 1970. These photographs capture different Pride marches, parades, and demonstrations in last half-century. #Pride #PrideMonth #LGBTQHistory#LGBTQIAHistory #AmericanHistory#LGBTQ #LGBTQIA #PrideParade#NYCHistory #NYHistory #1970 #1970s #DCPride #SmithsonianPride #🏳️‍🌈 #❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 [🏳️‍🌈: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Collection, Archives Center] http://bit.ly/2wIgSSL
