Samsung did however make one change to the design by placing the fingerprint sensor below the camera.

The Note 8 had its fingerprint sensor to the left of the rear cameras and that made it harder for people to reach it because of how tall the phone was.

I have to give a lot of credit to Samsung for listening to their customers and improving upon their mistakes each time they come out with a new phone.

Another thing I also love about the Note 9 on the hardware side of things is that it includes the S-Pen, which can be tucked away inside of the phone when it is not being used and this is a feature that I find to be very convenient.

Not only is the S-Pen great for taking notes, but it is also great for navigating around the touch screen and I find it a lot more fun than swiping my fingers everywhere.

Display

The Note 9 features a 6.4-inch Quad HD+ display and as expected it features Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology, which allows for super vibrant colors and a much brighter screen.

Everything on this display is going to come out crystal-clear and that even goes for when the Note 9 is being used outdoors because it can get super bright and allows you to see what is on the screen in direct sunlight.

But the best thing about this display is that it will make watching videos much more enjoyable because it supports HDR and that really helps colors pop no matter what you are watching.

With a Snapdragon 845 processor and 6 GB of RAM, the Note 9 runs smooth as silk and it even looks like it runs faster than the OnePlus 6 and iPhone XS, which are arguably the fastest phones on the market right now.

Multitasking and keeping multiple apps open at once is easy with the Note 9 because almost nothing slows it down whether it’s watching YouTube videos, browsing the web, interacting with your followers on social media or playing games.

As far as software is concerned the Note 9 does run Google’s Android 8.1 Oreo with a little bit of Samsung sprinkled on top of it.

Unlike its previous smartphones, Samsung did a great job engineering a quick and snappy user interface for the Note 9 because all of the extra crap that they put on this phone has not seemed to affect the performance at all.

And despite the fact that most phones tend slow down after a couple of years, I am not expecting this one to because I have used it for almost two months and it still works just like it did when it came out of the box.

My LG G6 started slowing down after a couple of weeks and my OnePlus 6 also did not last as long because it started giving me hiccups after just two months.

The Note 9 is the fastest smartphone around and I don’t think that is going to change anytime soon.

But we can’t talk about the performance of the Note 9 without discussing its superb battery life.

I have not thoroughly tested the batter on this phone like most other reviewers usually do, but so far the Note 9 has gotten me through every single day I have used it and this is regardless of what I used it for whether it was browsing the web or spending a lot of time on social media apps like Instagram and Twitter.

And for those who might be worried that the Note 9 won’t last them all day, topping off the battery can be done in minutes thanks to the fact the phone comes with a fast charger in the box, which is something Apple is refusing to do with the iPhone XS and iPhone XR.

Camera

Taking pictures with the Note 9 is an experience like no other and Samsung did a great job when it came to designing cameras that gives us the ability to take great shots in even the worst lighting conditions ever and in pretty much any other situation.

The colors always seem to pop in the photos I take on the Note 9 and the portrait mode is also nice because I can focus on a particular person or object without being distracted by what is in the background of the shot.

Apple claims to have added a similar feature to its newest iPhones, which I have yet to see for myself.

Bottom Line

$1,000 is a lot of money to spend on a phone but I think Samsung perfectly justifies the high price tag on the Note 9 by giving it features that no other flagship device has to offer.

People that can’t afford this phone are obviously not going to buy it, but those that can need to know that the Note 9 is a greater value for $1,000 compared to the iPhone XS.

The iPhone XS has a lot of cool features and its user interface is just as smooth as what I have found while using the Note 9, but the fact that you have to pay extra money to utilize all of its features is outrageous.

If someone where to buy a Note 9 right now they would get not only the phone in the box, but in addition to that they would also get a fast charging adapter along with a compatible cable.

Blog 2: Tech me out

The Asus Zenfone AR is a great demo for augmented reality and Daydream virtual reality, even if it shows AR is begging for more great apps. However, it’s a tough sell when the phone costs as much as a Galaxy S8 Plus but has a less striking design, no water resistance and less power.

The Asus Zenfone AR is the first phone to be certified for both Google Tango and Daydream. These are the augmented reality and virtual reality platforms that set some standards for AR and VR on Android. So we’re not just left with barrel-scraping stuff that makes phone VR seem hokier than those blue and red 3D glasses that used to come free in cereal boxes.

It comes with the Google Daydream Viewheadset if you pre-order from Asus, which helps to take at least one spike out of the porcupine attack-like sting of the price.

At £799 (around AU$1,320) the Asus Zenfone AR is a direct alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus in the UK, though early US pricing puts it at a slightly more palatable $648.

The price sticks out further when you realize the Asus Zenfone AR doesn’t even have a latest-generation chipset, with the Snapdragon 821 instead of the 835 you get in the Samsung Galaxy S8 (US version), OnePlus 5 and HTC U11.

To get on with the Asus Zenfone AR, you need to disconnect the phone from its price. And as we’re here to deliver buying advice above all else, that’s a problem.

However, if you find a good deal for the Zenfone AR or just don’t care about spending an awful lot of money on a phone that won’t necessarily make that many friends jealous, it is a very strong mobile.

The screen is great, the camera array very good and it’s one of the best phones in the world right now for VR, beating the Sony Xperia XZ Premium and LG G6, and at least matching the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus

The Asus Zenfone AR is a large, high-end Android phone with an important “first”, as a phone that launches with Tango and Daydream support. Daydream in particular at first seemed something that would quickly filter through to loads of Android phones. But it hasn’t.

The Asus Zenfone AR has what it takes for good phone VR thanks to its high-resolution OLED screen. It’s 5.7 inches across, with a resolution of 1440 x 2560.

The CPU is a high-end, but no longer top-end, quad-core Snapdragon 821. While there are versions of the Asus Zenfone AR with a mammoth 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, the phone we’re reviewing has 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

That’s a lot, but no more than some competitors, such as the OnePlus 5.



The camera does have more to show off than most, though. Instead of keeping the megapixel count low to improve low-light performance, the Asus Zenfone AR has a very high-res 23MP main camera and 4-axis optical image stabilization to help out at night.

There are two extra cameras on the back too. One is a lower-quality depth-sensing camera with IR, the other used to track motion. This trio is what makes the Asus Zenfone AR ready for Tango-grade augmented reality.

On the front, you get an 8MP selfie camera, but the rear team is what grabs our attention.

Other neat parts worth noting are a fingerprint scanner on the front, a leather-effect finish on the back and a dual-LED flash on the back.

The big question of the Asus Zenfone AR is whether these features are worth the price. Having spent a good while using the Zenfone AR, it’s a great phone but a tough sell.

Design and display

The Asus Zenfone AR is a big phone made for the enthusiast. Who else, after all, would be willing to spend this much on an Asus phone? No-one we know.

From a distance, it’s not as striking as something like the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. There’s some screen surround, which is rapidly disappearing from the most expensive phones, and the front of the Zenfone AR is not curved. Flat is so 2013.

The Asus Zenfone AR is also less stylish than some other phones at the price. Other top phone makers resist plastering their brand on the front as it’s not a great look, and the stainless-steel camera housing on the back has a whiff of Swiss Army Knife to it. But there is a lot of tech to show off.



Get closer and you’ll see it’s not the mostly-plain rectangle of black it may at first appear. The sides are smartly-finished aluminum and the back has a leather-effect finish rather than glass, basic plastic or metal.

While it’s synthetic rather than real leather, it looks and feels similar to the real stuff. And it’s less of a cringey show-off than previous leather phones like the LG G4.

It’s nice to handle. It’s well-made. But the Asus Zenfone AR doesn’t quite have the visual impact of other phones at the price.

One of the main practical omissions is water resistance: there isn’t any. The Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6 and HTC U11 can all survive a soak.



Hardware-wise you get a clicky finger scanner below the screen that acts as a normal home button if you don’t use finger security, and light-up soft keys to either side.

This isn’t the fastest fingerprint scanner around, a beat slower than something like the Honor 9, but only those who have spent altogether too much time with phones will notice.

The nanoSIM lives in the usual tray that pops out of the Asus Zenfone AR’s side, and there’s space for a microSD card if the 64/128GB of storage isn’t enough for you.

The phone’s screen is a 5.7-inch 1440 x 2560 OLED panel. It’s big, sharp and punchy, with an excellent 515ppi pixel density.



Like most OLED screens, colors are vivid and contrast is superb. Asus also gives you comprehensive control over how the display looks.

As standard it’s set to a mode called Super Color, which has a classic OLED-style oversaturated look, much like a high-end Samsung phone. There’s also a Standard mode with slightly calmed-down color and a manual mode that lets you choose the color saturation and even the hue.

You can make the Asus Zenfone AR completely monochrome, or its colors flat-out wrong. Less wide-ranging control would probably be more useful, less off-putting. However, as with any of these controls most people are likely to leave it on the default setting anyway.

The Asus Zenfone AR also has a blue light reduction mode, designed to cause less eye strain and be kinder to your circadian rhythms if you go on a late-night Facebook binge.

You asked for it! Here's a comparison of 9 fairly current high-end smartphones (not at all exhaustive, there's also Moto/excellent Chinese phone companies/excellent previous-gen stuff/etc, but cmon).

Display Size

4.7": Apple iPhone 7 5.0": Google Pixel 5.2" + vertical stretch = 5.8": Samsung GS8, LG G6 5.5": HTC U11, Google Pixel XL, Apple iPhone 7 Plus, OnePlus 3T 5.5" + vertical stretch = 6.2": Samsung GS8+

The LG and Samsung phones this generation have taller screens than usual. This makes them have large sizes when measured by the diagonal but about the same width as the previous generation. I've quoted their equivalent size (the size their width would normally indicate) as well as their actual diagonal.

Display Quality (besides colors)

All are very good. High-end phones no longer have poor displays (thank god). The OnePlus has a bit lower resolution than the others; the rest are in "too high to notice" territory.

The Samsung, Google, and Oneplus displays are OLED. The HTC, LG, and Apple are LCD. Both panel types have their strengths and weaknesses (different color shift, potential for burn-in, etc) but honestly most people can't tell the difference.

(Samsung does a weird thing with their panel that annoys the nerd in me but don't worry about all that)

Display Color Accuracy

Some devices make colors more colorful than they actually are (like many TVs). This makes their displays look better when side by side in a store but some people dislike it (i.e. me).

The Apple devices ship with extremely accurate colors.

The Samsung, Google, and OnePlus devices ship with inaccurate, overblown colors but have settings to change that if desired.

The LG G6, as far as I can tell, is stuck with inaccurate, overblown colors.

No idea about the HTC U11 yet.

Performance

The Apple devices are far and away the fastest smartphones you can buy.

I'd give the HTC U11 a small edge in performance from what I've read but all of the Android devices mentioned are fairly similar in speed. (They all use similar Qualcomm Kryo CPU cores, for one, with the HTC and Samsung having one generation newer processors.)

Software

LG and Samsung add a lot of software over stock Android. A lot of it is not worth using and I prefer to have as little extra stuff on my phone as possible. The others are all quite good.

Google and Apple have the edge in timely software and security updates, of course.

Camera Quality

You can compare reviews and test images. Like the display quality thing, high-end phones no longer have poor cameras. Megapixels don't matter at all.

Some of these have really high-end features like RAW capture if you're a serious photographer.

Camera Gimmicks

The iPhone 7 Plus can zoom in really well. The LG G6 can zoom out very well. Both are because of having 2 cameras.

Battery

I can't find a site that comparatively reviewed many of these, so I dunno. (Different sites' numbers cannot be compared with each other.)

You can compare battery capacities, but engineering dictates power efficiency, so they won't translate to battery performance.

MicroSD Storage Expansion

Yes: HTC, Samsung, LG No: Google, Apple, OnePlus

3.5mm Headphone Jacks

Yes: Samsung, LG, Google, OnePlus No: Apple, HTC

They all come with compatible headphones in the box, of course, and USBC/Lightning headphones are slowly becoming available, but only phones with a 3.5mm jack will be compatible with the headphones you already have.

Internal Speakers

The HTC U11 specifically advertises its built-in speaker quality, a traditional HTC strength. I didn't look up specific comparisons.

Wireless Charging

Yes: Samsung, LG No: HTC, Google, Apple, OnePlus

Fingerprint Sensors

All of them have fingerprint sensors. I didn't compare reviews to find the most reliable/fastest.

Water Resistance

Yes: HTC, Samsung, Apple, LG No: Google, OnePlus

Don't go swimming with any of these, obviously, but the IP67/IP68 rated devices should be splashproof and even survive a dunk in water just fine.

Design/Aesthetics

Ah, this is the important one. Let's be honest: None of that above stuff really matters since they're all fine. The phone for you is the one you like to hold and use.

The Google, Apple, and OnePlus devices are aluminum-backed, while the HTC, Samsung, and LG devices have glass backs. But each is really quite different in shape and appearance.

The LG G6 has rounded screen edges. This is kinda cool, but kinda strange too. (I've heard it's a bit ragged-edged on close inspection.)

The Samsung devices have even more rounded edges, as well as curved screens. This is kinda cool, but kinda strange too. They look stunning but I personally dislike the corners.

Most of these devices have flat backs; HTC has stuck to their curved back design. You'd have to hold them in a store to be sure which felt best, I think.

Some of these are smaller than you'd expect based on their display sizes, especially the Samsung and LG devices.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 MSM8996 is a high-end ARM-based SoC largely found on Android tablets and smartphones. Announced in mid 2016, the S820 is the successor to the Snapdragon 820 and from a technical perspective a higher clocked version of the SoC. In addition to 4 CPU cores (two slower clocked and two faster clocked Kryo cores), the SoC integrates an Adreno 530 GPU with a LPDDR4 memory controller  and supports Wi-Fi (802.11ad + MIMO), Bluetooth 4.1, and LTE.

CPU

The Snapdragon 821 is based on a similar concept as ARM’s big.LITTLE, which combines a low power CPU cluster (2x Kyro clocked at up to 1.6 GHz?) and a performance CPU cluster (2x Kyro clocked at up to 2.4 GHz). The clock speed of each cluster can be individually adjusted (but not per core) and the lowest clock speed is 310 MHz. The performance cluster features 1.5 MB L2 cache and the power saving one 512 KB. Both should be using the same architecture and fully support the ARMv8-ISA instruction set.

Although only four cores are used, the performance of the 821 is located in the high end of mobile CPUs for smartphones and tablets. The performance advantage of the 821 compared to the 820 depends on the used clock speed. E.g. in the Google Pixel, the SoC is only clocked at 2.15 GHz and therefore identical to many 820 SoCs.

GPU

The Adreno 530 outperforms the previous Adreno 430 especially in high demanding benchmarks. Therefore it is well suited of modern 3D games on Android devices and should rank slightly below the Tegra X1 GPU. Compared to the 530 in the 820, the 821 version should be up to 5 % faster, which speaks for a slightly higher clock speed.

The Snapdragon 821 offers numerous wireless technologies such as Bluetooth 4.1, WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ad (60 GHz) + MIMO as well as a dual-SIM cellular modem supporting LTE cat. 12/13 .

The SoC can encode and decode 4K videos using dedicated hardware (H.264 and H.265).

Power Consumption

Thanks to the new 14 nm process, the energy efficiency has been improved noticeably compared to its 20 nm predecessors.
