Borrow From The Boys: 5 Looks We’re Stealing From Men’s Fashion Week
London Fashion Week Men’s AW20 drew to a close yesterday and although the street style provided ample wardrobe inspiration (pastel worker jackets! Sweater vests! Slouchy suiting!), the capital’s most exciting designers offered a host of looks to steal this season.  It’s 2020 and we all know gender is a construct; people should wear whatever the hell they want, wherever they exist on – or outside of – the gender spectrum, so it’s high time we looked beyond women’s fashion month for sartorial styling tips.  With innovative, sustainable and political new visionaries like Grace Wales Bonner, Art School and Bethany Williams all featuring on the schedule, LFWM should be your first port of call for get-up refreshes this year. From ‘00s club kids to New Romantic ruffles, here are the looks we’re stealing from the boys this season.
Martine Rose: New Romantic Ruffles Martine Rose, whose website bio reads, thrillingly, "probably the best designer in the world," has been a cult favourite on the men’s fashion scene since 2007. Inspired by London’s underground subcultures, from clubbers to reggae heads, punks to football fans, her tongue-in-cheek approach to design draws a diverse mix of fans to her playful show spaces (think Sunday street markets and primary schools).  For AW20, we saw the stylistic amalgamation for which she’s known and loved (formal tweed coats with sky-high miniskirts on women, golf-style slacks with leather biker jackets on men), but our favourite look paired a baby blue New Romantics-esque ruffled shirt with silky rust trousers. Add classic loafers and a belt, and you have the ideal smart/casual Monday workwear look. Divine!
BEYOND RETRO 1990s Black Waist Belt, $, available at Beyond Retro M&S Collection Leather Penny Loafers, $, available at Marks & Spencer ALEXACHUNG Ruffled Stripe Shirt, $, available at Farfetch Toast Cord Wide Leg Trousers, $, available at Toast
Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY: Pop Art Knits Glaswegian designer and Fashion East graduate Charles Jeffrey is undoubtedly one of the most exciting new voices in fashion. The way his label LOVERBOY has shaken up the industry has been likened to Alexander McQueen’s impact in the ‘90s, all the-personal-is-political and joy as an act of resistance. Jeffrey’s club night, which brings together drag queens, poets and artists, informs his design aesthetic and vice versa: think a mad rush of colour, tailoring and print. His AW20 show, which centred around man’s complex and historical relationship with nature in light of the current conversation about ecological and climate disaster, saw references to Teddy Boy tailoring, traditional Scottish tartan and psychedelia. Our standout look, though, saw a model’s incredible orange eyeshadow match a colour-blocking knit, combined with a pleated schoolgirl miniskirt, sheer knee-highs and stomping Dr. Martens. Yes please, lover boy.
Off-White Pleated Twill Mini Skirt, $, available at Net-A-Porter Weekday Ella Sheer Socks, $, available at Weekday Dr Martens Jadon Max Platform Boots, $, available at DR MARTENS Rick Owens Colour-Block Mohair-Blend Sweater, $, available at Net-A-Porter
Wales Bonner: Checked Suiting Central Saint Martins graduate Grace Wales Bonner founded her eponymous label back in 2014 and has fast become the intellectual jewel in LFWM’s crown, winning Emerging Menswear Designer at the Fashion Awards in 2015, and the LVMH Young Designer Prize the following year. Her references to literature, history, art and music intertwine with her critical examination of black culture, often looking to figures like James Baldwin to inspire the identity politics of her collections. For her most recent show, she looked to her father’s south London borough of Lewisham and the way Afro-Caribbean men dressed in the ‘70s, all colour-pop stripes, trench coats and adidas trainers. Our dream look from the AW20 collection is a graphic oversized suit layered over a vibrant polo neck and teamed with a matching checked baker boy hat. Add colourful socks for extra pizzazz.
Uniqlo Men Colour Socks, $, available at Uniqlo Hobbs Mischa Roll Neck, $, available at Hobbs Acne Studios Checked Wool-Blend Tailored Trousers, $, available at Matches Fashion Acne Studios Checked Double-Breasted Wool-Blend Blazer, $, available at Acne Studios Adidas Gazelle Shoes, $, available at Adidas
Bethany Williams: '00s Club Kid NEWGEN recipient Bethany Williams, who won LFW’s second Queen Elizabeth II Award last year, is truly paving the way in sustainable and ethical fashion practices. Every season she partners with a charity to repurpose offcuts and waste material, with profits going to the organisation of choice, whether it’s upcycling wastepaper from publishing house Hachette UK and donating to the Mobile Library Charity, or working with The Magpie Project to support vulnerable women and children by reusing old toy ribbons, as she did for AW20. While the whole collection was themed around motherhood and comfort, via padded materials and childlike silhouettes, our favourite look feels less cosy and more club-ready. A pair of wide-legged white trousers, an adjustable belt and a hand-printed colour-block crop top has us hankering for a dance floor.
Lazy Oaf Flower Explosion Sheer Top, $, available at Lazy Oaf Weekday Cosmo White Denim Trousers, $, available at Weekday Prada Textured Leather-Trimmed Canvas Belt, $, available at Net-A-Porter Superga White 2790 Flatform Trainers, $, available at Schuh
Chalayan: Contemporary Workwear Hussein Chalayan’s label was founded back in 1994 but the Cypriot-born Turkish designer’s womenswear and menswear are as celebrated now as they were 20 years ago. Deconstructed classics that imbue strength are always present in his LFW offering but on the menswear front, slick suiting and sculptural silhouettes have always been the name of Chalayan’s game, and this season was no different. Tweed blazers, boxy worker’s jackets and double-breasted boiler suits are all worth filing away for seasonal inspiration, but our try-now look encompasses a graphic long-sleeved tee layered under a front-fastened white shirt, with caped grey slacks and functional rubber boots. Think of it as your fuss-free minimalist aesthetic 2.0.
ignored prayers Level Up Long Sleeve Tee, $, available at Dover Street Market Weekday Daf Trousers, $, available at Weekday Hunter Women's Refined Slim Fit Chelsea Boots, $, available at Hunter COS Draped Tied Cotton Shirt, $, available at COS
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

2020 Grammys: Burna Boy Spotted in Tokyo James‘ AW20
2020 Grammys: Burna Boy Spotted in Tokyo James‘ AW20
Better late than never.
In just released pictures, Burna Boy stands beside his mother for a killer shot in his Grammy outfit. He’s wearing a regal number from Tokyo James’ Autumn/Winter 2020 collection which was just released a few weeks ago at the Men’s London Fashion Week and he exudes regality and luxuriance.

‘The world is burning. Fashion plays a BIG part in this’. Strong words from @patrickgrantism last night @ETautz AW20 show. Mended, darned and patched details were, rather than a nod to the fashionable ‘boro’ aesthetic, a genuine invocation to clothes worthy of being loved and cherished #etautz #LFWM #londonfashionweekmens (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B677F5FlVlw/?igshid=6y2gx9zqvu0i
