Subtext only seems gayer than actual text because it’s blatant. It’s put there purposefully. But what you have to figure out is what it’s put there purposefully for.

There’s a huge motherfucking difference between subtext used for queerbaiting and manipulation over an actual legitimate subtext. Xena does not fall into the category of subtext for wrong or selfish reasons.

It was severely censored. They COULD NOT do it.

But if you watch the show - you’ll quickly realize that it doesn’t even fucking matter that they’re not canon.

The creators agree with you anyway that they are.

The reason why it’s still the gayest TV show ever is because the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle is the most realistic depiction of love and therefore the best lesbian or WLW representation that there is. Part of the reason why is because they are the main protagonists. They’re the MAIN characters of the show. That may exist but it’s extremely fucking rare. The other part is that the creators see them that way. You get a legitimate lesbian love story because IT IS.

So it doesn’t matter that they’re not textually canon. In fact you could ever say it’s better that they’re not.

Because in a weird, ironic and hilarious way - the fact the show is censored helps a hell of a lot because the creators used the censorship to their advantage. They were clever and creative in getting around the censorship. They built on the relationship through it. And so it’s because it’s censored why it feels so real.

You don’t get canon text like “I’m in love with you”, “marry me” or “I want to have sex with you.”

You get: “It was like I was in a dream too. I forgot everything. But even though I didn't remember you..., I felt your presence. And knew that I would never be complete unless those shadows were brought into the light.” and “Gabrielle, if I'd only have thirty seconds to live, that's how I'd want to live them, looking into your eyes.”

Which is 1000x gayer than anything you’ll get today textually, subtextually or basically any romantic dialogue in a TV show said to another character ever.

Xena is just THAT GAY. It’s extremely gay. It’s a fucking queer show about queer characters. And it is that way because the creators made it that way. They purposefully made it that way. For the right reasons!

So don’t compare it to shit like ‘Supergirl’. The creators/cast/crew ridiculed you. They didn’t represent you. They baited you in and laughed at you. Xena do the opposite. They validate and love you.

It's unnecessarily large for the area, its sharp angles and sleek lines standing in stark contrast to the more subdued, contemporary neighbors. Five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a game room—and even a pickleball court, a new popular accessory for the well-to-do.

Your fingers drum against the steering wheel, the other scrolling absently through your phone. The client is late—no message. Money the only motivating factor for your patience.

You run your tongue over your teeth, brushing away the faint smudge of rouge. Your gaze drifts to the movement behind you—a sleek black car gliding into view. It’s him.

You exhale slowly, giving yourself a final once-over in the tiny mirror. Usually, you don’t show houses outside of your listings. But he had been insistent, and with the commission on the line, you’d jumped through twice as many hoops just to make this happen. You’re not sure why you pushed so hard—maybe it’s the challenge.

With a practiced smile, you step out of the car, leather folder in hand as you go. The steady click of your heels on the driveway fills the quiet as you approach the car, each step measured and steady. The door opens slowly as you near it, smoke spilling from the door as he rises—unruffled. His suit is sharp, too sharp, like a blade in a dark room. Slim, tailored to perfection. He takes a long drag from his cigarette, barely acknowledging the world around him.

“Hello again, Mr. Shelby,” you say, forcing the words to sound natural. “Hope you found it here alright.”

“It’s a lot easier these days with one of these,” he says, his eyes still locking on you, as he waggles his phone before slipping it into his suit pocket.

“Right, well, right this way.” You motion to the house, tamping down the small flush of foolishness creeping up your neck.

He follows close behind as you step onto the stone path toward the door, his footsteps matching your rhythm. His presence feels louder than the silence around you.

“Oh, Mr. Shelby,” you begin, stopping short and spinning on your heels to face him. His brow rises slightly, yet his expression as unreadable as ever.

“Tommy,” he interrupts, his voice smooth, like velvet, but his eyes sharp—piercing.

“Oh, uh, right, well, Mr.—Tommy,” you correct yourself quickly, your words stumbling over the unfamiliarity. “I’m afraid the owners don’t allow smoking on the premises.” Your voice is small, unsure, as his closeness presses on your nerves, and his gaze lingers too long for comfort. “Sorry.”

He lets out a faint scoff, a smirk playing at his lips, before stubbing the cigarette beneath his polished shoe with a casual flick of his wrist.

“So you never said,” you continue as . “Are you looking to bring your family over? This seems a bit big for just yourself.”

“I do have a family back home,” he says, his voice low and calm, but there’s an edge to it. “But whether they’ll be coming here… well, that’s not something you need to worry about.”

“Right, sorry,” The words dry in your mouth, and silence thickens the air between you. You lift the key to the door, fingers brushing over the lock with a deliberate slowness, every motion feeling heavier. You can’t quite read him, and something tells you he’d rather keep it that way.

You sit on the couch, the cool weight of the wine glass steady in your hand as you absentmindedly flip through the listings. The low hum of cicadas barely reaches your ears, drowned out by the mounting frustration in your chest. The sharp clink of the glass against the table punctuates the silence as you take another sip, your eyes scanning the photos but not really seeing them.

You've heard the stories—difficult clients, high expectations—but Mr. Shelby was becoming the very definition. Every home you've shown him was met with some new criticism. The sting of each comment still lingers in your mind.

Were it not for the proof of funds he'd presented, you might have assumed he was simply playing the long game—wasting your time with no intention closing.

You set your glass down as your phone vibrates, the screen glowing faintly in the dim room. It’s him.

“Hello, Mr. Shelby.”

“Now, I’m sure I’ve told you to call me Tommy, haven’t I?”

You pause, hesitating before answering, feeling the tug between politeness and formality. “My apologies, but it’s late, and I’ve been drinking,” you admit, almost defensively.

He chuckles, low and unhurried. “Anything worth drinking?”

“Top-shelf grocery store brand,” you say with a half-smile he can’t see. The words slip out, the drink loosening a part of you that prefers to stay cautious, professional.

“Well,” he says, almost thoughtfully, “we’ll have to share a glass when we finally close on a house.”

His words hang in the quiet space, and you swallow, feeling the slightest pull of warmth at the thought. You let out a light laugh, barely more than a breath.

“At this rate, Mr.—Tommy—you may have to build one from scratch. I’m running out of listings.”

There’s a pause on his end, and you can almost imagine the way he’s leaning into his own quiet, perhaps smirking at the way you waver on his name. And though he doesn’t respond right away, you feel the weight of something unspoken, the strange pull between a man in search of a home and a woman who can’t tell if he’s looking for more than just four walls.

"Build a place from scratch, then? Only if you’re prepared to be the one I call on for, let’s say, expert guidance."

You almost scoff but catch yourself, letting his words linger in the air a moment longer than they should. You've been down that road before—and weren’t about to do it again.

"I’m sorry, Tommy, but if that’s what you’re after, I’m not the right person for you."

Quiet fills the room, and days go by without a word from him. Maybe you scared him off, or maybe he found someone more suited to his needs. You don’t worry too much, work is work. New houses come on the market, and potential buyers come and go.

Barefoot, you pad across the hardwood floor, heels in one hand, purse and keys balanced in the other. You love this home—every corner carefully crafted. Selling isn’t in the cards—not now, maybe not ever. Too much history is layered into these walls, even if staying means holding onto something you should’ve let go of long ago.

The art deco kitchen you fought tooth and nail to build greets you quietly as you step through the doorway. Your ex said it was dated, but you didn’t care—this was your dream. The marble tiles, painstakingly laid by your own hands, cool the bottoms of your feet as you head toward the mudroom.

Light floods the garage as you step in, your gaze catching on the boxes piled along the wall, their contents waiting for the day you stop putting them off. A small frown settles as you let the thought drift, slipping into the driver’s seat instead.

The soft purr of the engine fills the space as you buckle in, the garage door rising in a slow, steady arc. Carefully, you back out into the quiet morning.

That’s when you see it—a parcel on your porch, vibrant against the muted colors of the morning. You stop, putting the car in park, and step closer, brow creasing at the sight. The flowers, not your favorite but still beautiful, lay against your door, coupled with a bottle of wine and a card that reads simply, “Better than top-shelf.”

It would almost be romantic, if it weren’t so unnerving. You gather the items, scanning your quiet street, though you already have an idea who sent them. But how he found your address… that’s a detail you didn’t know.

My Myou Bettina, wearing the first outfit I complete for him, based on Ken Kaneki, who he is supposed to be. He's a 28cm tall doll, and I am not skilled at sewing. So, I should have known making clothes for him, let alone based on anime characters, was going to be next level nightmare. I chose to recreate this one first, not because I keep forgetting to purchase size #4/#3 zippers white nylon zippers, but because I know the struggle is going to be real once I start making that outfit for him. I already made a few pieces of clothing for this doll, but finding patters that fit well is an ordeal. I also made a cloth/foam manikin, that didn't go too well. And also, an initial pattern for his awakened/battle outfit, but I am not sure it's going to go well either. I know I suck at sewing, and this doll is extremely stylized. His body is willowy and very close to skeletal-like (kind of like me, yay! Lol!). So, making anything from pre-existing fashion doll patterns needs a lot of alterations, and me making my own is an ordeal on its own.

Regardless, I am supper happy with him and how he looks with his smaller eyes! I am also liking very much how he looks as my Ken Kaneki! I knew I loved the doll, but now I love him so much more, that I know he can pull off the look, even if not anime/manga accurate (I feel maybe the manga version is more stylized, and has a larger head, but my personal preference is the anime with the smaller head, and not stubby proportions).

Unfortunately, and as I had feared. The mods I did on him are not permanent! I was fearing so, when I learned that people usually clean up mistakes when using the Vajello Plastic putty, using alcohol. I feared taht meant the product is not meant to have any kind of solvents applied to it. My fears were true. Alcohol will melt the putty right off! I was cleaning my 3D artist Leon head, and the mods came right off with the paint apps! DX Looks like I'll have to get some Aves Apoxie Sculpt Afterall! Oh, well! Live and learn, is what I keep on saying! I was actually excited about the plastic putty working for permanent mods, because I tend to not love my repaint work and rework/redo those repaints like there's no tomorrow! Now, I know! There's no substitute for Aves' Apoxie Sculpt! I kind of want to cry a little, even if it was kind of cool to find what I can and can't do, with the Vallejo filler stuff. T____T;;;

The super washed out looking photos were taken with my super old cell phone. I think I like the way that one works a bit more, but I don't like the hazy/blurriness of it all.

I repainted my fan-art Ken Kaneki (MYou Bettina male) for the second time. I had enhanced the 1st face up I gave him previously. However, I decided to attempt painting him the way I learned to do 1:6 sculpts, form that one (15 episodes) tutorial I watched. I was impatient however, which I regret to no tomorrow. So, I was able to get most of the pigmented skin texture on there with mostly acrylics. Then I grew impatient, because I was taking too long (it was dumb of me, terribly so!). 

I am still super happy with how he looks despite using pastels and ruining the beautiful subtleness I had going on. I did take progress photos, but they ar more awful than these. I am of course heavily disappointed in my hair strokes -- my eyebrows and eyelashes are horrid. However, I am happy with how much more mature he appears, due to the heavy dark brows, so I’ll probably be keeping them for a while (before I start obsessing and repaint him again!). 

I need to get a new pointy brush, because I managed to already ruin the one I was using to paint my Sephiroth and Leon 1:6 head sculpts. Bettina has much, much larger eyes, and I was still not able to get not-so-clean, but kind of sharp lines like on Sephy. I wasn’t able to do a better job on Leon either, but he has tinier eyes and they were sculpted way off, so I kind of have to cheat with the way I shade his lower eyelid to make it look like they are a more accurate shape. Leaving me to having to pain the lashes on an area that is hard to do so (and yes, I also suck, so there’s that too!). 

Still, I am super happy with my Kaneki fan-art doll so far. I wish he had broader shoulders, and overall, more lean-young-male body proportions, like Kaneki has in the anime. Instead of noodle arms and child-bearing-hips. Besides the proportions, I am in-love with this tiny face! He’s so pretty and has great lips, as he as intended to be female, but can be a very versatile sculpt! (: Now I just need to start making some actual Kaneki inspired clothes and maybe a more accurate wig, as painful as that will be. I was thinking of this wig as his default one, but it makes him look cone-headed. Lol! DX
