Hydroponics Market - Forecast (2022 - 2027)
Hydroponics Market Overview:
As per a 2015 study conducted by researchers at the University of Sheffield’s Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures, 33% of the global arable land has been degraded in the last 40 years.[1] Soil erosion, pollution, traditional methods of ploughing land, and heavy use of fertilizers have led to the rise in non-arable land. Hydroponics is a process of growing a variety of vegetable and fruit plants with the utilization of mineral nutrient solutions in liquid, sand, or gravel while discarding the use of soil, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides. Hydroponics forms part of hydroculture and is a modern, eco-friendly farming and agricultural practice.
The growing population coupled with the decreasing agriculture land has increased the demand for food products. Traditional agricultural methods cannot handle the growing global demand for due to the exponentially increasing population. Water scarcity is another relevant factor associated with traditional farming practices. Thus, hydroponics has started to gradually replace traditional agricultural methods. The global hydroponics market was valued at $293.12m in 2018 and is projected to grow at a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.45% during the forecast period 2019-2025.
Europe held the prominent share of the global hydroponics market, estimated at 43.56%, in 2018. Extensive utilization of technology for hydroponics adoption has enabled Europe to enjoy a maximum market share. A report indicates that big tech giant Apple was working on a stock trading app for its devices along with banking institution Goldman Sachs. Across social media platforms, rumors began surfacing about a possible listing of Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies should the platform ever come to light. Apple Joins Forces With Goldman Sachs, But Project Is Stillborn? Mainstream media outlet CNBC revealed the plans to launch the stock trading app. The big tech giant planned to compete with Robinhood, Square, and other similar companies, all of which offered BTC and cryptocurrency for its clients. The report indicates that the bull run across the stock market in 2020 drove the partners to develop this app. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the price of BTC rose to an all-time high of $69,000, cryptocurrencies, “meme stocks,” and other assets were blooming. The tech company aimed to capitalize on this bull run and the euphoria experienced by traders during the high liquidity financial environment. However, the project was stalled due to the significant decline experienced by the sector and echoed in others, such as the crypto market. CNBC claims that a potential use case for the app would have allowed users to hold shares in the tech giant. The project was stopped because of the drop in the financial world and because the team behind the project “feared user backlash.” The team behind the project was concerned about people losing money on the app as Apple’s stock and other equities trended to the downside in a persistent bear market. As mentioned, the project is currently on hold, with no immediate plans for a launch. A source close to the project told CNBC that the user interface and infrastructure are allegedly ready. According to the report, Apple has increased its financial services arsenal since 2019. At that time, the tech giant launched a credit card, a “buy now, pay later” loan feature, and others. The company claims that the adoption of these products has been growing. In addition to the companies mentioned above, Apple would have to face the platforms of other financial giants, such as JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley. If the company decides to work on the app and launch it, it will need to compete with these names and many others, including PayPal and X. As the report highlighted, these companies already have or are working on cryptocurrency-based products, which would force the Tim Cook-led company to offer similar services potentially. As of this writing, Bitcoin trades at $27,100 with sideways movement on the 24-hour chart. BTC’s price is moving sideways on the daily chart. Research for costume piece: technology and clothing
After researching for inspiration, I now want to research to find the ways technology and clothing is meeting and becoming together, as the movie shoes quite a bit of technological advancement, but not really integrated into clothing. So for my final piece I was thinking of doing a capitol inspired piece, but here it meets in the middle with technological advancement. So to find ideas on how these two can come together I started doing some research.
1)  “The future of fashion” (2018) By V&A at https://www.vam.ac.uk/articles/the-future-of-fashion
This article highlights the necessity of change in the fashion industry due to the environmental impact fashion causes. It then presents a few of the technological advancements that are being made that can form solutions to this issue.
- Bolt Threads: a bio-engineered protein fibre that can be produced without the    “polluting chemicals of petroleum-derived materials nor the land, water and pesticides of conventionally farmed fibres” (V&A) It is already being used and big designer Stella McCartney has already released a collection with it.
- Colorifix: Form of dyeing fabric using low quantity of water and without polluting by using microorganisms to bind the fabric.
- Roots: People like Diana Scherer have started innovative ways to use nature to create fabric. She trains roots to grow in a specific way using structures making it into a textile.
 - Pulp-it: Wearable paper that is easily recycled, made with little chemicals and dyed with natural dyes. Easily customisable in colour, pattern and shape.
These are all interesting ways where people are managing to use technology (and creativity) to change the negative impact of fashion, and hopefully by 2050 a lot of these solutions and more will be already implemented. These are mostly focused on the way the garments are made, and considering my piece will depict the garment itself I might not use this information directly into my piece.
2) “LED and a glass slipper: How technology turned Zendaya into Cinderella”  (2022) by Victoria Purchase at https://sites.psu.edu/ist110pursel/2022/01/26/led-and-a-glass-slipper-how-technology-turned-zendaya-into-cinderella/#:~:text=Zendaya's%20dress%20was%20produced%20by,of%20technology%20was%20the%20LEDs.
When trying to think of times technology mixed with clothing, I remembered of Zendaya’s 2019 Met gala Cinderella dress that started normal and grey, but then started to light up blue and expand. I decided to look a bit behind the scenes and this is what this article revealed:
- LED tape was lined in her bodice and skirt, and satin illuminated fabric was chosen to enhance the light and make it look more natural and complimentary.
- To get the mechanism into action remotely a robotics system had to be installed, as well as lithium batteries. Everything was covered buy a heat resisting material to reduce risk of fire.
- The last technological piece was a software to be made for the movement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This dress shows that technology can be incredible with fashion as it created this gown that imitates magic and transforms. This was for a high grade event and worn by a celebrity, which makes it not accessible to the most of us. But if it is like this already I wonder if this is the future of fashion and how maybe by 2050 LEDs and robotics in clothing will be more mainstream and accessible. Maybe this is something I can definitely incorporate into my final costume.
I did a small test on procreate where I studied the skirt of the dress and tried to recreate its light on the same software I will be doing my piece on, Procreate. First I did it with simple brush strokes and layering of colour, and it implies glow and shine but not exactly LED lights. I tried some brushes and this stamp brush with lights sports seemed the best way I could show the LEDs more clearly as well as making it more flashy looking, which is my goal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

3) “All you need to know about the technology behind Bella Hadid’s spray-on dress” by Suha Hasan at https://wired.me/technology/all-you-need-to-know-about-the-technology-behind-bella-hadids-spray-on-dress/
A even more recent example of technology impacting fashion happened when a dress was made onstage on the model Bella Hadid within 8 minutes. This article says more about the technology used and its possibilities:
- The tech used was an aerosol that when sprayed onto any surface it becomes a non-woven fabric layer
-  “It can be used to make innovative clothes that can be washed, re-worn and even integrated with diagnostic devices that can monitor the health of the wearer “ said the brand responsible for the show.
- The business responsible for this spray on is also developing other technology that will be able to be used both in fashion and even in medicine (with casts and even bandages) and as seen above by mixing fabrics with technology that allows the monitoring of the health of the wearer.
Considering this is here now already, I don’t find this last statement in specific to be unrealistic in the year 2050. We already use health tracking devices (e.g. smart watches), but this could bring it to another level of wear-ability, as well as what exactly is being tracked. However similar to the first article this research might not directly show in the outcome visually, but helps in my understanding of the future of our clothing in the future.
4) “ Has body diversity within the fashion industry *really* improved in the last 20 years?”(2022) by Hannah Banks-Walker at https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/fashion-industry-body-diversity-opinion
Another important aspect of fashion is its models, and how the fashion is shown to the public. Things have improved since the early 2000s for example where incredibly skinny white models was the standard, and now in 2023 we slowly see more body and background diversity. However will it have improved by 2050? This article discusses it.#
-  “Over the past few years, the fashion industry has appeared to embrace body positivity (mostly by sending a few more ‘curvy’ models down their catwalks). But the body fascism that dominated the scene in the ‘90s and early ’00s is still alive and well.”
- Things did not change much as sizes still run small and when there is body diversity in a runway it is not often. (reflection: an many times they put a “plus” sized model, they are still considerably thin and not really plus at all, only plus in the eyes of the fashion industry)
-  “We had 10 girls in the Valentino Haute Couture Show [last season], which was very exciting for us. Let’s put it in perspective, if you compare how many slim models are used in fashion week to the number of curve models, there’s a long way to go. But we are taking steps forward.” says founder of MiLK management, model agency that represents women above size 10 (UK size)
- to leave this standard and make diverse clothing requires a lot of expenses that many small businesses cannot afford, as factories are restricted to only be able to do certain sizes due to capacity
- In many countries such as USA and UK the average women size of clothing is considered plus-size in the industry.
On a whole this article highlights both improvement but flaws in the system. If I think optimistically of this as an exponential improvement over time, I imagine that by 2050 fashion will be a LOT more diverse and that the clothing we see online will be modelled by multiple different models. For positivity I will take this optimistic and hopeful view in my piece, and show the costume represented by a model with curves, ideally two different women of different ethnicities and body type. However, if I am being realistic with my timeline for this project, I might not have enough time to draw two models.

VIVOSUN 600W Full Spectrum LED Grow Light
I needed to buy the Vivosun to test as I didn't hear back from anybody at the company about getting a test component. Luckily for me, this is the LED Grow Light Review: Best for under $250, and also the Vivosun comes in way under that.
Unpacking the unit, it appeared to be nicely constructed with 2 Reinforced 5″ Exhaust Fans assembled into the unit. It also includes hanging equipment and a very lengthy plug cord.
As this device is"rated" in 600w I'm hoping it to behave like the Mars Hydro 600 also that it will be on par with a 250w HPS so far as output goes. Manufacturer information on this particular unit is very limited, it is claimed to be a"Full Spectrum" mild but specifics about these wavelengths were not available. Thus, we'll just proceed to the increase.
Even the Vivosun 600W led grow light looked underpowered when I first turned the unit on. The intensity I would expect to see right beneath the light device is just not that high. I don't have a power meter, so I will have to just judge it by experience.
The grow itself was underwhelming but with no problems. Growing started slow and continued gradually to the end of this grow. The Veg period stretched out to 8 weeks along with the flowering time increased to 10 weeks. The yield for every plant dropped a disappointing 12 ounce.
Though this is a cheap LED grow light it is functionality is considerably lower than those other mature lights we tested in this price range of below $250.
Pros:
Solid construction
Amazing heating and ventilation
Cons:
Not as strong as the other components tested within this category.

Bisexual Visibility Day (also known as Celebrate Bisexuality Day) was first officially observed on 23rd September 1999, at the International Lesbian and Gay Association Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Twenty years on, is there still a need to increase Bi Visibility?
I was born and raised in a small country town approximately 80km west of Brisbane, with Ipswich being the closest major hub. I remember Ipswich being (in)famous in the media on several occasions. As I navigated my teenage years, I always felt like I was different to everyone else or that I didn’t fit in. I could never answer the one question that was constantly tormenting my thoughts – why?
Now at 27, I’ve realised that sexuality wasn’t discussed in the environment I grew up in. The occasions that I did hear someone talk about bisexuality were always negative. I was told that bisexual people were just going through a phase, confused or greedy. I was told that bisexual people (especially women) were promiscuous or more likely to cheat. Bisexual people face numerous stereotypes and negative assumptions. I should know, I’ve heard them all. Unfortunately, it’s not just me. According to the 2019 AWEI Employee Survey, nearly 30% of Bisexual respondents hearing or being made personally aware of negative commentary, jokes or innuendo targeting the bisexual community and other LGBTIQ people within the last year.
Growing up, I also never saw myself in anyone else. I wasn’t aware of any television or movie characters that were bisexual. Or if they were, they were portrayed in a negative light. Icons ‘Bicons’ who had come out as bisexual, such as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, consistently had their identities erased. Bi-erasure is a pervasive problem in which the existence or legitimacy of bisexuality (either in general or in regard to an individual) is questioned or denied outright.
Fittingly, visibility for Bisexual respondents is extremely important:
89.47% say that LGBTIQ inclusion initiatives are important to an organisaiton’s culture
80.61% say that out role models are important to their sense of inclusion
77.49% say that Allies have made a difference to their sense of inclusion
33.10% say that there could be more visible signs of inclusion (ally signs, flags, network posters)
The need to maintain and increase visibility and inclusion for bisexual people is not only the right thing to do, but necessary for the overall health and wellbeing of the bisexual community. Biphobia, bi-erasure and not being out has been found to be associated with poorer mental health. The Who I Am study, the largest study of bisexual people in the world to date, led by La Trobe University, has examined why bisexual people experience higher rates of psychological distress than heterosexual and homosexual people.
The study found sobering statistics:
One in four have attempted suicide;
Nearly 80% had considered self-harm or thought about committing suicide;
Over 60% have high or very high current psychological distress, with 40% reporting having had depression in the past; and
Transgender and gender diverse bisexual people experienced even poorer mental health and these findings will be released in the coming months.
The study instigated Bi+ Australia – the first national organisation set up to improve the mental health of bisexual Australians through support, education and research.
How can organisations and employees increase Bi Visibility?

The President Wears Prada (William Nylander) | Chapter 6
Tumblr media
A/N: Thanks for all the love.  Black Lives Matter.  I stand with those who are actively dismantling racist attitudes, behaviours, and systems, and want to remind you that you are always welcome on my blog.
October 31st, 2019
Aberdeen Bloom was dressing up.
Her hair, long and wavy and a bit frizzy on its own (thanks dad) was now teased, crimped, and made purposely frizzy.  She outfitted herself in a blazer embroidered with poppies, leaves, and other floral insignia, a pair of 1970s style black pants, and a ridiculously ruffled shirt.  She looked over at Kasha, whose own hair was curled and crimped then teased, a pair of skin tight light wash jeans, a plain tank top, and a Japanese cherry blossom-printed kimono-style cardigan left loose but tied around her waist.
They were Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin.  And they were going to the Leafs’ Halloween party willingly dressed like this.
The purchase of the exact replica blazer embroidered with the poppies was probably one of the most ludicrous purchases Aberdeen had made in her life, but she now had a Halloween costume for life.  It wasn’t exactly her parents’ proudest moment, but they made explicitly clear growing up that any money she made was her money and she was free to do with it whatever she wanted.  Did that mean buy an exact replica Jimmy Page blazer?  Probably not.  But Aberdeen didn’t hear it that way.  All she had to do for the rest of her life was find a friend or partner (or three friends or partners) to be the rest of the band.  That proved harder than she thought.
“I can’t believe you’re bringing me to a party with the Toronto Maple Leafs,” Kasha said as she layered some mascara onto her lashes in front of the full-length mirror in her room.
“I can’t believe you agreed,” Aberdeen said, applying her own mascara as she sat on the floor in front of the same mirror.
“Hey, I only agreed for an hour,” Kasha reminded her.  “Then Evan’s picking me up and we’re going to his friend’s house party.”
Aberdeen didn’t want to think about the fact that Kasha would have to leave her alone with the Leafs after only an hour.  She should be thankful that Kasha was coming in the first place.  “What does Evan think of your costume?”
Kasha chuckled slightly.  “He dressed up as John Bonham.  Fake moustache and everything.”
Aberdeen swooned.  “That boy is in love with you,” she said.  Kasha stayed silent.  “But why doesn’t anybody ever want to be John Paul Jones?”
“Oh, one of his friends is being John Paul Jones.”
Aberdeen almost poked her eye out with her mascara wand.  “Okay, can I come to your party instead?  You guys obviously need a guitarist.”
“Um, no.  It’s not every day that someone gets invited to a Leafs party,” Kasha said, a devilish look on her face.  “Besides, I bet Will is looking forward to seeing you.”
Now Aberdeen rolled her eyes.  “Stop.”
“No way.  Do you know what he’s dressing up as?”
“No idea.”
“Maybe he’ll dress up as John Paul Jones.  He’s definitely got the hair for it.”
Aberdeen laughed.  “I don’t think he even knows who Led Zeppelin is.”
“I barely know who Led Zeppelin is,” Kasha quipped, making Aberdeen laugh.  “The only reason I know is because of you and your dad.”
“And thank God for that.”
***
“Aberdeen!  You made it!” Travis Dermott greeted her at the door dressed up in a unicorn onesie.  He didn’t move to hug her but he gave her a very obvious up-down to take in her costume.  “Are you supposed to be the seventies?” he asked.
“Jimmy Page,” she pointed at herself, then moved to point to Kasha, “and Robert Plant.  From Led Zeppelin.”
“Well, rock on baby,” he smiled.  “And this is…?”
“This is Kasha, my roommate.  Kasha, this is Travis Dermott.”
He led them further inside the venue, The Burroughes, before introducing them to his girlfriend, Kat, dressed in a matching unicorn onesie.  Zach Hyman came up to them as well, introducing his wife Alannah.  They were dressed up as characters from Stranger Things, which Kasha got a kick out of.  Morgan and Bee came to say hi too – Bee was dressed up like Bruce Springsteen, and Morgan as Courtney Cox from the ‘Dancing in the Dark’ music video.  Aberdeen got a kick out of that.
“Where’s Jason?” she asked Morgan as he led them to the bar, looking around for him.  He was the one who invited her to be here, after all.  She thought he’d be running up to her to say hello.
“Jason’s trick-or-treating with his kids.  Where else would he be?”
Her face dropped.  That little bastard.  He invited her to the Halloween party and then didn’t even bother to show up.  She thought for sure he’d take delight in watching her squirm the whole night and interact awkwardly with the team.  “Oh, that’s nice.  He was the one who invited me.”
Morgan smiled.  “He was the messenger,” he said, almost underneath his breath.  She saw Bee try to discreetly elbow him.
“What does that mean?”
“What are you ladies having to drink?” Bee asked, changing the subject completely.  “Everything’s on the house.”
Aberdeen ordered a gin and tonic while Kasha ordered a Tom Collins.  A few more of the guys and their girlfriends came up to say hi, confused by their costumes until she explained them.  Their costumes were much cuter, much more couple-y, like Alex Kerfoot and his girlfriend, who dressed up as Curious George and The Man in the Yellow Hat, or Mitch Marner and his girlfriend Steph, who dressed up as Fred and Daphne from Scooby Doo.  Even Nic Petan and Frederick Gauthier dressed up as Holmes and Watson.  Bee soon started chatting up with Kasha, which left Aberdeen sipping on her drink and vulnerable to Auston Matthews seeing her approaching her.
“I must say, I think you’re the only person in the world who would get invited to the Leafs’ Halloween party and not dress up in something provocative,” Auston said, a drink already in his hand.
She knew Auston was Auston, but she still rolled her eyes.  “I work with you people.  We have to see each other tomorrow.”
“And you’re not trying to impress anybody?”
“No!”  It was the most ridiculous notion in the world.  Most of them were married or in long-term relationships.  Plus, she was an employee.  Did he not read the MLSE Employee Handbook?  “In case you forgot I work for Brendan Shanahan.  You know, the president?”
“Whatever,” he rolled his eyes playfully at her.  “What are you supposed to be, anyway?”
“I’m Jimmy Page,” she said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.  It should have been, since he was dressed up as Freddie Mercury.  She assumed he would know his rock stars if he dressed up like Freddie Mercury.
“Who’s that?”
“Led Zep—you know what, never mind,” she shook her head, trying not to laugh.  “Maybe I should have dressed up like Justin Bieber.  Then you’d know.”
“Is there something going on between you and Willy?” he asked suddenly.
Aberdeen practically spit out her drink.  Was he already drunk?  “No,” she said firmly.  “Why would you think that?”
“I don’t know,” Auston shrugged his shoulders.  “He’s always just kinda looking at you.  And when Kappy hit you in the face with the soccer ball…he was so red afterwards from being so angry I thought he was gonna murder Kappy.”
Aberdeen got defensive.  She couldn’t help it.  “Well, there’s nothing going on.  I don’t know why you would even think that.”
“I think he’s got the hots for you,” he tried to provoke her.
“Oh, shut it, Auston,” she said.  “You’re just trying to get a rise out of me.  I’m just trying to do my job here.  What Willy does or does not feel is none of my business.”
As if on cue, William appeared behind Auston, dressed as Batman.  So stereotypical.  She wondered who was his Robin.  For a brief second, she wondered if he brought a girl.  “What’s none of your business?” he asked, throwing an arm around Auston but looking directly at her.
“What Kyle Dubas’s coffee order is,” Aberdeen thought on her feet, answering quickly.  “He’s got Peter for that.  Although I think he’s partial to a latte.”
She could see William giving her an up-down and briefly got self-conscious.  “Are you a rock star or something?”
“Jimmy Page.”
“Who’s that?”
Aberdeen rolled her eyes as Auston laughed out loud, turning to walk away to find someone better to talk to.  She felt a rush of blood flood her cheeks as William continued to look at her.  Kasha was still talking with Bee, and she wished to God either one of them would pull her into their conversation.  But they didn’t.  So she was stuck with William.  “Who’s your Robin?”
“Would have liked it to be you, but it’s Rasmus,” he said.  It made her head spin.  “Who’s your…I don’t know, partner?”
“Kasha, my roommate,” she pointed quickly to her.  “She’s Robert Plant.  The lead singer.”
“You got my texts that day, right?” he asked, changing the subject quickly like Auston had.
She gulped.  “Yeah.”
“Why didn’t you text me back?”
“Did I have to?” she asked.
William shrugged his shoulders.  “Would have been nice.”
“How’d you even get my number?” she asked.
He smiled.  “Don’t worry about it.”  He looked down at her drink.  “Cucumber mule?”
“Gin and tonic.”
“Ah, that’s right,” he smiled.  “You’re more of a gin girl, right minskatt?”
Her heart fluttered in her chest at those words.  My treasure.  My treasure.  She’d told Kasha about it and Kasha almost teared up.  “Don’t call me that.”
“Don’t call you that?”
“At least not here.  Not in front of everybody.”
“So I can call you that when we’re alone?” he countered.
He was really dead set on making her heart fluttered out of her chest.  “When are we ever alone?” she asked, looking around the room at the team that surrounded them.
“We can find time,” he said.  “At least I will.”
“Aberdeeeeeeeeen!” she finally heard Kasha’s voice call out her name, tugging on the elbow of her blazer.  “Aberdeen, you have to see how cute Bee’s cat Bruce is!  Oh my God, he and Minerva can be best friends!”  When Kasha noticed Aberdeen wasn’t moving, too busy staring at William still, she looked at him.  He looked just as she remembered him from that night in June.  Blonde hair, blue eyes.  A total dreamboat.  A total hottie.  What she should have done is pat Aberdeen on the back for landing him.  “Hi, I’m Kasha,” she extended her hand to shake his.  “I’m Aberdeen’s roommate and best friend.”
“Nice to meet you Kasha,” he shook her hand, taking his eyes off Aberdeen momentarily.  “So, roommates, huh?”
“Mhm,” Kasha looked at him knowingly.
“Here’s Bruce!” Bee intervened, bringing her phone up to Aberdeen’s face.  “Kasha tells me you have a grey ragdoll?  That is adorable.”
***
Kasha was too good a girl to break her promise to Evan, so over an hour into the party, she told Aberdeen he was here and she had to leave.  They had spent the first half of their time talking to William, who wouldn’t leave Aberdeen’s side, and the second half talking to Bee, Aryne, and Alannah.  But even when it was just the girls laughing and giggling, ordering drink after drink, whenever Aberdeen’s eyes left any of the women’s, she found William somewhere in the room staring at her.
As Kasha hugged Aberdeen goodbye, Kasha held her in place to whisper in her ear.  “Okay, but listen.  He’s so sweet.  And he said he wants you, Aberdeen.”  When she pulled away, her eyes flashed and she nodded slightly, signalling that William was probably coming back.
“Kasha, don’t leave.”
“Evan’s waiting.”
“Kasha, if he’s coming, please don’t leave.”
“Leaving so soon?” Aberdeen heard William’s voice asked as he saw the two girls hugging.
“My boyfriend is here to pick me up.  I’m going to another party,” she informed him.
“Boyfriend?  Auston’s gonna be heartbroken,” he smiled as he hugged her goodbye.
“Tell Auston there’s no way he’s getting near her,” Aberdeen said immediately, skeeving at the thought of Auston hooking up with Kasha.  Kasha would never, but still.  There was only one fuck up that was going to hook up with a Maple Leaf, and that was Aberdeen.
“I’m sure I’ll be seeing you sometime soon,” William said to Kasha as they let go of their hug.  Kasha raised her eyebrows at Aberdeen when she heard William’s words before turning on her heels and walking through the door.
When Aberdeen turned around, she saw Kasperi and his girlfriend Saylor, dressed as what looked like the twins from The Shining, approaching her and William.  For a guy who apparently wanted alone time with her, tonight or otherwise, it looked like William wasn’t going to get it.  “You must be Aberdeen,” Saylor said, smiling at her.  “I’m Saylor.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Aberdeen shook her hand politely, but smiled awkwardly.
Saylor grabbed her hand, leading her towards the bar.  “We have so much to talk about.”
“We do?”
“Did you know my boyfriend and Will used to be roommates?  Oh my God, it was a disaster.”
Saylor liked to talk.  Aberdeen didn’t know whether to chalk it up to the fact that she was a bit drunk or that she just had a lot of information and gossip to tell, but she did about 95% of the talking throughout their “conversation”.  Aberdeen would nod her head and laugh along at the stories Saylor would tell, but at the end of the day, they were just stories Kasperi told her of when he and Will lived together when they were like, nineteen.  She wasn’t around then, and so these were just second-hand accounts.
It was 12:30 in the morning before Saylor stopped talking, and Aberdeen was finally able to realize she was tired and wanted to go home.   Everybody was quick to take the group picture, and when they finished, she began saying goodbye to everybody.  John and Aryne first, then Morgan and Bee, and then she saw that William was watching her give goodbye hugs and waves.
He made a beeline towards her, like if he didn’t get to her quick enough, she would disappear into thin air.  “Are you leaving?” he asked.
“Yeah.  I’m exhausted.  Listening to Saylor took a lot out of me.”
“Can I walk you home?” William asked, his tone hinting on the side of desperate.
“Unnecessary.”
“Why not?”
“It’s only a twenty minute walk away,” Aberdeen explained.
“Are you joking?  All the more reason,” he defied her.
“Will.”
“It’s late at night, it’s dark, and there are drunk people everywhere from Halloween parties—”
“—William—”
“—Who knows if one of them will scare you or throw up on you or God knows what on the way home…I wouldn’t feel right knowing you’re out there walking alone and—”
“If I say yes will you shut up?”
William smiled.  Aberdeen rolled her eyes.  “Let’s go.”
They left the The Burroughes rather inconspicuously, beginning their walk along Queen Street.  If it was any other night, of course, they would have looked ridiculous – Robert Plant and Batman walking along the street together – but tonight nobody even gave them a second look.  William kept looking over at her, though.  The only pair of eyes on her.
“So, you and Kasperi used to live together?” she asked, trying not to feel awkward with his eyes on her as they walked down the street.
“Yeah,” William nodded his head.  “He’s actually one of my best friends because of it.”
“Does he know?”
“No,” he answered automatically, shaking his head.  “The only person that knows is my brother.  I told you I wouldn’t tell anybody on the team.  I don’t break my promises.”  He was so soft spoken that Aberdeen felt bad for insinuating she wanted him to shut up not even five minutes ago.  “Do any of your friends know?”
“Well, Kasha knows.  She is my roommate,” she said, suddenly nervous.  “And I told my sister Siena.”
“Are you guys close?” he asked.
Aberdeen nodded.  “Kasha’s one of my best friends but Siena is my sister and my best friend.  She’s the person I’m closest with in the whole world,” Aberdeen explained.  “I know I can tell her anything.  And I mean anything.”
“Sounds like me and my brother,” William smiled slightly.  “He’s the person I trust most in the world.”
“Yeah.  That’s Siena for me too.”
There was a moment of silence between them before William spoke up again.  “I mean what I say, you know.  I’m not going to tell a soul.”
“I believe you, Will,” she said, well, because she did.  When she really thought about it, he gave her no reason to think otherwise.  If he wanted to be vindictive, he would have told the entire team already, maybe even spoke to Brendan about it.  But he didn’t.
“Why do you call me Will?” he asked.
“That’s how you introduced yourself to me,” she said.
“But you hear everyone else calls me Willy.”
“So?  You introduced yourself to me as Will.”
He smiled at her again.  “I like it.  I like it a lot.”
She blushed again.  She wished they had taken the streetcar because she didn’t want keep blushing in front of him because of his cute, stupid, adorable, dumb one-liners that made her swoon and his cute, stupid, adorable, dumb smile that made her swoon even harder.  “So your brother.  What does he do?” she asked.
“He plays hockey too.”
“Seriously?”
“Yeah,” he giggled.  He thought she would have googled him by now.  “He plays for Chicago.”
“That’s pretty cool.  And then?  I remember Kasperi mentioning in Newfoundland there’s three others or something?”
“There’s three girls after us,” he explained, loving that she remembered that from all the way back in September.  “And my older half-sister before me.  So it’s Michelle, me, Alex, Jacqueline, Stephanie, and Daniella.”
“Oh my God, there’s six of you?” she asked.  William nodded.  “God bless your parents,” she said, causing him to giggle again.
There was another moment of silence.  Aberdeen didn’t know if it was her or William that had slowed down the walking pace, but she noticed.  She wasn’t going as fast as she usually did.  God, it was probably him.  He clearly wanted to spend time with her.  He left his entire team to walk her home (in a Batman costume) and now he wanted to elongate the experience as much as possible, regardless of how ridiculous they looked.  He wanted to spend time with her.  He found time and got her alone, like he said he would.
“Has Ethan done anything else I should yell at him for?” William suddenly asked, taking Aberdeen away from her thoughts.
“No no, don’t worry about it,” she said, shaking her head.  He’d made some comments here and there, but again, she wasn’t going to let William know about it.  The most annoying was that he kept referring to her as Girl Friday instead of her name.
“I told Mike about it, thinking that he’d say something to Brendan,” he explained.  “He decided not to.  But I can go to him if you want.”
“It’s fine Will, don’t worry,” she continued to shake her head.  The absolute last thing she wanted to do was cause a ruckus with an established member of staff.  “I know I’m like, the rookie around the office, and he’s just trying to test me.  I get it.”
“That doesn’t make it right,” Will said strongly.  “He still shouldn’t be doing that.  Rookie or not.”
Aberdeen bit her lip.  Clearly Will had a protective side that she hadn’t seen yet, and was only getting a small glimpse of now.  “Did you get hazed when you joined the team?” she asked.
“If you count paying for an entire team’s meals and bar tab, then yeah.  But that’s the extent of it nowadays.  Harmless stuff,” he said.  “Anything worse is just bullshit.  Plus the media would pick up on it and it would become a shitshow.”
“Brendan tells me the media in Toronto is ridiculous,” she said.
“They are.”
He didn’t say anything else.  Clearly, he didn’t want to talk about it.  Maybe something had happened to him in the past and that’s why he didn’t like them.  She didn’t really read about what they said about the team – she left that to Brendan.  When she got home from work, she didn’t really want to think about work.  She never googled articles about the team or anything like that.  She wanted to keep that portion of her life separate from the one she lived outside of work.
She changed the subject, bringing it back to hockey and playing with Alex as they continued their walk home.  He was much more upbeat talking about his close relationships with his siblings, particularly Alex.  The endearing smile on his face couldn’t be missed – he clearly loved his family.  When she spoke about Siena and Camden, there was a similar endearing smile on her face, too – one that William wished would never fade.  He heard about the shenanigans she and Siena would get into as young kids, and she even recounted the day she went to the hospital to see Camden for the first time.  She and Siena had to end up sharing a room so the baby could get his own.
Sometimes, their hands would brush against each other’s, and William would feel a jolt of electricity surging through his body.
They stopped outside her condo building.  His smile was still on his face, as was hers.  Their walk was nice.  Their talk was really nice.  Aberdeen held her breath.  She didn’t expect to enjoy it so much.  She looked him in the eye, and suddenly, her word vomit got the best of her.  “You don’t regret that night, do you?” she asked before she even thought about what she was saying, or its implications.
“God no,” William said in less than a millisecond.  The notion was absurd to him.  “No.  Never.  Why would you even ask that, minskatt?”
She couldn’t think for a moment because he said that name.  Again.  “I don’t know…I just…”
He purposely reached forward slightly to brush his fingers against hers, like he was going to hold her hand.  He could hear the breath hitch in her throat.  “Don’t ever think that again,” he told her.
Aberdeen didn’t say anything.  She couldn’t say anything.  All she could do was look into his eyes.  She was doing that a lot lately, apparently.
Then he moved closer.
And closer.
And looked down at her lips.
And licked his.
And then he leaned forward.
“Will…” she whispered, moving back slightly.  He looked her in the eye.  “We can’t, Will.”
He bit his lip, sighing.  “I’m sorry.  I know.  Fuck, I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright.”
“You just…I can’t help myself sometimes when I’m around you,” he confessed.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Exactly what you think it means,” he said, cocking his head to the side.
Aberdeen could only handle so much of William making her heart flutter in one night.  She felt like she was going to develop heart palpitations if she stayed any longer.  “I’m gonna go upstairs.”
“Aberdeen…” he said longingly.
“Goodnight,” she said, turning away from him.
“Aberdeeeeeeen…”
“Goodnight Willy,” she said as she looked at him over her shoulder, walking into her condo building.
William stood outside, watching until she disappeared down the hallway towards the elevators.  He brought his fingers up to his lips, rubbing them gently as he chuckled to himself, turning on his heels as he walked down the street.

Arsinoe tilted her head back, breathing in the sea air as she sat on the docks with Jules, their feet dangling over the edge with their toes almost touching the water.
They had snuck away from the main action, where most of Wolf Spring were gathered to lay out their blankets with picnics in the streets and look up at the stars as the night approached.
Jules and Arsinoe had gorged themselves of leftovers from Madge’s stall, as they did every year. She had come to expect it by now, and always left them a note and a bowl each, asking them to be back by the time the lanterns were lit.
Each year, the people of Wolf Spring lit lanterns at the stroke of midnight after the first day of the new year to light the night sky. It was supposed to be symbolic of them asking the Goddess to light their way through the next year.
“Glad to be home?” Jules asked quietly, breaking the silence that had settled over them. Arsinoe looked over at her best friend and smiled.
“Yeah.” She replied. “Always am, especially if it means coming home to you and Billy.”
In the time since Arsinoe, Mirabella and Katharine and surprised the island by all three agreeing to take equal claim to the throne, Arsinoe had felt torn between her nearest and dearest friend, whom she loved with every fibre of her being, and the ridiculous mainlander who had surprised even Arsinoe.
It had taken almost two months before Jules and Billy to approach her and admit that they both knew of Arsinoe’s strong feelings towards them both, how her heart was split in two.
A long chat in the forests of Wolf Spring had spawned the situation they were in now, where Arsinoe no longer had to decide who she wanted most, who she believed was right for her heart, she got to choose them both.
Billy still stayed at the Sandrins, and had a job in the new Black Council as a representative/ambassador that reflected the interests of both the mainland and Fennbirn. He was currently looking to buy his own home in Wolf Spring, but was still a little while off, yet.
Arsinoe would spend some days and nights with him whenever she wished, going riding and hunting and hiking and swimming. Some days, they barely even left bed, preferring to stay wrapped in each other’s arms.
And Arsinoe would spend her other days and nights with Jules, her own bed pushed against Jules’ so that both of them, plus Cam, could comfortably fit during their lazy days together.
Everything she did with one of them, she did with the other, and it worked for them all. Such simplicity and repetitive behaviours were somehow wildly different depending on who she did it with, and Arsinoe found herself so surrounded by happiness and love that her days no longer felt like a fight.
They all still saw Emilia, who was often busy rebuilding Bastian City and retraining any and all of the war gifted that had survived. With Jules’ place as the fourth queen on the Black Council, the war gift was already beginning to grow again, with more children starting to display their talent.
There were plans to encourage the oracle gift with Mathilde now on the Council, and to avoid drowning any future queens that displayed the gift, instead choosing to have respected individuals with years of experience the Sight so that any future queen with it would not go mad.
Arsinoe shifted slightly, moving closer to Jules and resting her head on the other girl’s shoulder.
“All is well, Syn.” Jules whispered. “The start of a new year brings new things for us all.”
“As long as I still have you and my sisters and Billy ... that’s all I ask.”
“You’ll have us forever.” Jules replied. “On my life, I swear.”
Arsinoe smiled, looked across the water and the reflection of the moon and let herself relax.
If the Goddess has given me anything good this past year, it is the girl beside me, and the boy waiting for me back in the city, and the sisters across the water who all love me. Life has not been easy for me, but it has been good. And that is all I need.
~
So I just wanted to wish everyone a happy new year! It’s still New Year’s Day where I am, so thankfully this isn’t too late. It’s been a wild year, and I’m so thankful for the small good things it has brought.
Pure curiousity led me in December of 2019 to pick up Three Dark Crowns. I finished the series last April when I got the rest of the books for my birthday and stumbled across a fanbase of amazingly talented people who I’m very fortunate to create content alongside.
I can sometimes be a little quiet on tumblr, especially on the creative side and especially considering how active I was in summer. But this fanbase, as well as the ao3 Marauder fanbase, has really given me so much joy and happiness and has only encouraged me to get back into writing, properly cosplaying and developing my skills after well over 18 months of writing and creating nothing.
Despite everything, I feel confident that this following year can bring some brighter times for all of us.
But I do want to thank the ones who brought me happiness this year, and whose endless support and love always make me smile. Y’all are wonderful, I’m so very lucky and grateful to know you all. I consider you guys to be genuine friends, and I hope this year brings you all the best! <3

Break the Wheel
It’s a common point of discussion in the Kingdom Hearts fandom how often the main heroes are screwed over by the actions and attitudes of their various mentors. Ansem the Wise, Eraqus, the Master of Masters... Nearly every mentor figure in the series has contributed in some way to the pain the young people they interact with have endured over the course of the series.
The Master of Masters deliberately manipulated his pupils into turning against each other and starting a war to further his own agenda. The Foretellers spread that suspicion and mistrust of each other outward to the members of their respective Unions. From what we’re seeing so far, the Dandelions are removed from the Master’s direct influence and are handling the Potential Traitor discussion so much better than the Foretellers did in Back Cover, but something still clearly went wrong that left at least four of them thousands of years in the future with only vague memories of their past at best.
Birth by Sleep showed how Eraqus’ paranoia and distrust of darkness directly lead to the suffering of his pupils. His attitude toward Terra’s darkness in the beginning drove the latter to seek validation from Xehanort, who used Terra for his own agenda causing Aqua to trap herself in the Realm of Darkness to save her friend. Eraqus’ insistence that she spy on Terra and bring Ven back to the Land of Departure drove a wedge between the trio at Radiant Garden. And his willingness to kill Ventus to stop Xehanort leads to his duel with Terra and subsequent death.
Ienzo’s role in the experiments performed by the Organization’s founders prior to the fall of Radiant Garden is unclear, but his conversation with Ansem in Kingdom Hearts III suggests that the older apprentices kept him in the dark about many things and might have potentially used Ansem’s fondness for him to manipulate their mentor. This resulted in Ansem’s banishment and - if DDD is any indication - turning Ienzo into a Nobody against his will when he was only 8 years old.
Ansem himself went on to openly seek the destruction of Roxas, Xion, and Namine for the sake of his revenge against everyone who wronged him, using his prejudice against Nobodies to justify the things he did in pursuit of his goals. And despite guiding Riku to accept his own darkness in Chain of Memories, Ansem still fundamentally buys into the view of Darkness as something inherently negative, best illustrated at the end of Riku’s side of that game where DiZ attempted to make Riku choose between the “road to light” and “road to darkness”, implicitly trying to force Riku into a rigid either/or path that Riku rejects in favor of choosing “the middle road”.
This pattern has repeated often enough that when fans on Twitter shared screenshots of Dark Road from the game’s prematurely leaked website showing Master Odin, several fans - myself included - began eagerly anticipating the ways in which this pattern of old men failing the young would rear its head in Xehanort’s time as an apprentice.
The fact that this pattern appears so consistently across the entire Kingdom Hearts timeline is not an accident. The entire starting point of the Heroine’s Journey is built around the idea that the protagonist’s environment - parents, mentors, peers, sometimes even their entire society - has failed them in some way[1]. By forcing them to adhere to a rigid binary of what traits are considered desirable versus undesirable, it forces people who do not fit those standards to cut themselves off from vital parts of who they are in order to be recognized and validated.
So when the younger generation grows up with these standards and is called to fix the mistakes of their elders, they are expected to do so on their mentors’ terms[2]. In doing so, they will ultimately continue the cycle that led to those problems in the first place. But the central protagonist of the Heroine’s Journey is different. The qualities which set them apart are the same ones that allow them to think outside of this rigid binary and ultimately break that cycle. In the course of their growth, the main character learns to create a new, better world not by vanquishing a villain who represents the failures of the old one, but by healing the wounds those failures created.
Kairi said it best in Kingdom Hearts III that Sora’s journey is about helping people, many of whom he’s never met before. This is significant because the protagonist breaking out of the cycle has commonly taken the form of learning to solve problems with compassion and understanding instead of violence and punishment[1]. The main character cannot improve the world around them by simply killing the villain and calling it a day. In order to achieve meaningful change they need to help the people who have been hurt by this rigid cycle. And as the contrast between Sora’s attitudes towards the dying Organization members in Kingdom Hearts II and III demonstrates, that includes the same villains he’s fighting against. Yes, even Xehanort.
Because when you look back and think about it, every non-Disney antagonist in the Kingdom Hearts series is shown to be motivated by the pain and/or trauma inflicted on them by the worldview of their peers and mentors, which they then took out on the people around them.
Marluxia as Lauriam was powerless to stop Strelitzia’s murder, and then he lost all memory of his past when he arrived in the present from the Age of Fairy Tales. That knowledge casts his behavior in Chain of Memories as someone trying to control the people around him as a proxy to feel like he has control over his own life[3].
Ienzo’s words when Ansem returns in Kingdom Hearts III[4] and the fact that he was a child [5] when Radiant Garden fell[6] paint his words toward Riku in Chain of Memories about the latter destroying his home as Zexion projecting the repressed guilt over the destruction of his home onto Riku.
Saix’s cruelty toward Roxas and Xion in 358/2 Days is revealed in Kingdom Hearts III to have been driven by jealousy towards Axel and the feeling that he was being abandoned and replaced[7].
All of these characters’ villainous actions can be traced back to the influence of the mentor figures of their generation. Marluxia’s survivor’s guilt over Strelitzia’s death is the result of her killer attempting to defy the manipulations of the Master of Masters. Saix was gaslit about his own humanity by Xemnas and Xigbar for over a decade with Xemnas’ manipulation and whatever effect Norting had on him on top of that. Ienzo’s conversation with Ansem in Kingdom Hearts III indicates that he didn’t fully understand what Ansem’s adult apprentices were doing around him when they were conducting their experiments, and the flashback at the start of Dream Drop Distance suggests he had not become a Nobody of his own volition.
Xehanort too, is someone who was hurt by this destructive cycle. The things he indicates he saw during his world tour - people refusing to acknowledge the darkness in their own hearts and allowing it to grow [8] - showed him the consequences of repressing one’s darkness and negative emotions as he and Eraqus were taught. He wanted to change this, but he was still so entrenched in that system that the best he could think of ultimately amounted to the same rigid viewpoint but flipped so that darkness was on top.
The merciless death many fans felt Xehanort deserved would only reinforce the “darkness evil, light good” worldview that Riku’s redemption arc was built on overturning. In order to truly heal the wounds created by the rigid belief system that made the villain who they are, the protagonist needs to be able to extend their compassion and sympathy even to their greatest enemies, or else it fundamentally breaks the narrative. The idea that there should be limits or conditions on such compassion is exactly the kind of mentality that led Eraqus to try and kill Terra and Ventus in Birth by Sleep. It doesn’t mean the main characters will ever forgive the villain(s) for what they’ve done, but that they are choosing to let go. To focus their energy on self-care and rebuilding, instead of more violence and more destruction[2].
Regardless of how individual fans feel about it, Xehanort being treated with dignity in his final moments needed to happen in order to show Sora’s growth. If Kingdom Hearts III had given Xehanort a violent demise like some of us wanted, it would have been a betrayal of the Heroine’s Journey’s major themes. Treating opponents with sympathy and compassion is a critical element of the framework, and is necessary in order to allow the protagonist to break free of the destructive mentality that created the story’s overarching conflict in the first place.

The Italian publisher, editor and collector Franco Maria Ricci has died at the age of 82.
In sumptuously produced art books, and as editor of the bi-monthly art magazine FMR, Ricci published writing by Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, Umberto Eco, Roland Barthes and many others over the course of his long and distinguished career. In 2019, Susan Moore visited his estate at Fontanellato, near Parma, where in recent years Ricci had constructed the largest labyrinth in the world out of bamboo; they discussed Ricci’s notable collection of largely 18th- and 19th-century sculpture and paintings, as well as his library of books published by the great typographer Giambattista Bodoni, whose works Ricci had reprinted in his first foray into publishing. The interview is published in full below.
Collecting may be read as a form of autobiography written with works of art rather than words. In the case of Franco Maria Ricci, his is a life composed of both words and pictures. He has not only published the most lavishly produced art magazine – FMR – and art books in the world, but also spent the last 50 years amassing a peerless collection of volumes produced by the great Italian typographer, compositor and publisher Giambattista Bodoni (1740–1813) and a rich, eclectic collection of some 500 largely neoclassical and baroque paintings and sculptures. Both collections are at the heart of his most recent and extraordinary venture, the creation of the immense, star-shaped Labirinto della Masone, near Parma, the largest labyrinth in the world – and surely one of the few planted with bamboo.
There is something surreal, and slightly disturbing, about turning off the autostrada and suddenly encountering this majestic bamboo structure rising 10m or more above the plains of the Po valley. For all its elegant calligraphic stems and angular leaves, this is not the sparse specimen bamboo of Chinese ink-painting, but a forest. Here, more than 200,000 of these fast-growing bamboos arch upward in their quest for light. Once I turn into the drive of what was originally Ricci’s grandfather’s estate at Fontanellato, the brilliant azure June sky all but disappears. By the end of my two-day visit, it seems that the contrasts of light and dark are an apt metaphor for the book and art collections – and for the entire complex of maze, museum, archive and chapel, the latter built in the form of a pyramid. Ricci has always been part rationalist, part visionary.
Ricci’s story begins with the book. ‘I grew up surrounded by my father’s books. Reading Shakespeare, Homer, Joyce and Dante saved me from bad taste,’ he once said. ‘It made beauty simple, familiar and immediate in my eyes.’ It was a book, too, that transformed his life and launched a long and successful career: Bodoni’s Manuale tipografico, first published in 1818. Before his discovery of Bodoni’s works in the Biblioteca Palatina in Parma in the 1960s, a career in publishing seemed unlikely. The stylish Ricci, a racing driver and a dandy with dark cherubic curls, was best known for patterning the snow in the piazza around Parma Cathedral with the wheels of his E-type Jaguar. Even Bernardo Bertolucci remembered that car.
As a young man, Ricci had wanted to study archaeology, but an uncle in the oil world persuaded him to sign up for geology instead. After three months in Turkey spent looking for oil that was not there, he realised the oil business was not for him. Yet his education proved critical in unlikely ways. He spent weekends exploring the mysterious, labyrinthine underground tunnels and caves that are a feature of the Romagna region of Italy. He also designed posters for Parma University’s theatre festival that caught the attention of an American curator preparing a show of Italian design in New York. He became, inadvertently, a graphic artist, and went on to create striking graphics for everything from Poste Italiane to Alitalia.
Ricci has long insisted that ‘Bodoni was not only a typographer. He achieved modernity and elegance through graphic art. He was, like Canova, a champion of neoclassicism but in two dimensions. I immediately fell in love with the proportions, the concept of beauty.’ Bodoni’s genius was not simply the freshness, rigour and precision of the typefaces, with their dramatic contrasts between thick and thin line, but also his sense of how to lay out a page. Texts are set with extravagantly wide margins and with little or no decoration.
Ricci decided to reproduce the master’s Manuale tipografico, although everyone told him he was mad to do it. He bought two early offset typography machines which, he noted, were ‘as expensive as a Ferrari, which I wanted to buy but never did’, and had the highest-quality paper made exclusively for the project by Fabriano. It took a year to publish the three volumes in 900 numbered copies (1964–65). ‘So I became a publisher. It became a bestseller.’
Much to his mother’s horror, Ricci decided to continue to publish very expensive books – art books printed in Bodonian style – and later, literary editions, several series of which were edited by Jorge Luis Borges, whose presence looms large in library and labyrinth. At a time when Arte Povera dominated the Italian avant-garde, Ricci chose opulent black silk covers embossed with gold, and printed on costly pale blue Fabriano paper with handmade plates. He wanted his books to be rare – printing small editions – but also surprising. He gave Roland Barthes, Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino and Borges free rein to write accompanying texts.
His wife Laura Casalis remembers having been struck by the originality of Ricci’s 1970 book on the then little-appreciated Erté – text by Barthes – before she met the publisher himself in 1975, and soon found herself working on a book on red paper-cut portraits of Mao, accompanied by 39 of the Chairman’s own poems printed in Chinese characters. ‘Little by little I slipped into publishing with him – Franco was a workaholic and I realised that was the only way I would see him. Those Mao paper-cuts were typical of the practically unknown subjects that he would seek out all his life, and we sometimes show them between loan exhibitions in the museum. Franco has l’occhio lungo – he can see beauty in something which may take others a long time to recognise.’
It is in the library I find Ricci and, indeed, where he is to be found most mornings and afternoons. It is part of a cluster of picturesque 19th-century stone buildings surrounded by lush and increasingly exotic gardens. He had begun renovating the dilapidated stables behind his grandfather’s long-abandoned villa as a summerhouse and library in the 1970s, and its enormous hayloft still serves as an idyllic open-air dining room and entertaining space, even though the couple have now moved into the main house. Inside this romantic half-ruined folly, Ricci created the unexpected: two neoclassical library rooms lined with bookshelves and marble busts, their domed and coffered ceilings reminiscent of those in the Biblioteca Palatina.
As soon as we arrive in the inner sanctum, the Bodoni library with its more than 1,200 volumes – missing a tantalising three or four tomes but otherwise complete – Ricci is immediately up on his feet and pulling down and opening cherished volumes, eyes blazing. Despite the heat, he wears an elegant embroidered linen waistcoat but not its jacket, which hangs nearby, bearing the synthetic red flower that became in effect his iconographical device. (Tai Missoni gave him a cardigan as a present: Ricci declined the gift – he does not wear cardigans – but declared that he would always wear the red flower from its packaging thereafter, which he did. Once, when he had forgotten the flower, an officer at the Alitalia desk at Milan airport said: ‘I see you are travelling incognito today Mr Ricci.’)
Now Ricci deftly presents Bodoni’s Essai de caractères russes… of 1782, and his 1789 edition of Torquato Tasso’s pastoral play Aminta, exquisitely illuminated for the Prince of Essling. These are dear friends and the joy as he handles these pages is self-evident. This is the only significant part of the collection not to have been moved down to the museum and archive complex, a short bamboo-lined drive away. It is clear that he could never bear to live apart from these books.
The impetus to create the long-imagined labyrinth, and a museum and library to house his collections and publishing archive, was a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. The couple sold the publishing house in 1982, and their house in Milan, and moved to Fontanellato. There is a fierce pride in Laura Casalis’s voice as she explains: ‘Franco wanted to do it, he imagined it, and he found the right team of people to help him realise it.’ We are sitting over coffee in the Labirinto courtyard surveying the sharp-edged geometries of its rose-pink brick buildings, a place that already has the air of a lost ancient city discovered in a jungle. Laura describes the evolution of the museum collections within, and recalls the words of the late Italian publisher Valentino Bompiani, who described Ricci as a man of courage and fantasy.
‘Whenever he fell for some subject or artist, Franco would try to buy.’ Laura continues. ‘He was never concerned with what was or was not fashionable, and never bought to decorate a house. He collected pieces that he liked that were strange or unconventional.’ He began with Art Deco, first buying inexpensive little bronze and chryselephantine dancers by the likes of Demétre Chiparus (1886–1947), as well as Guiraud-Rivière’s dramatic figure of Isadora Duncan with two bears, which dominates the central space of the 20th-century gallery in the museum.
Here, too, are three paintings by the outsider artist Antonio Ligabue (1899–1965), a tormented soul who had led a tragic life, painting and wandering around the Po valley when he was not confined to a psychiatric hospital. Ricci published the first monograph on the artist in 1967, two years after his death, a work that helped catapult the artist from provincial to national and then international fame. Two years later, he bought two of the artist’s bold, visceral close-up heads of roaring tigers, painted in the 1950s, including the key work that had been selected for the book cover. A no less bright and richly impasted self-portrait in the guise of Vincent Van Gogh followed a year later.
Ricci also championed – and collected – the work of the third dominant presence in this space, Adolfo Wildt (1868–1931), often described as the last Symbolist but one whose reputation was, as Laura puts it, ‘tarnished by Fascist association’. Ricci published a monograph in 1988, the same year that he acquired the strange masterpiece that is Vir temporis acti of 1913, a virtuoso marble bust of a Greek or Roman soldier reimagined through the combined lenses of Michelangelo and the Secessionists. The expressive anguish of this head may be seen as a symbol of the nobility and redemption of sacrifice, but it is the refined and gleaming silken surface that led to Brancusi.
Ricci has a penchant not only for sculpture but also portraits, and portrait busts in particular. ‘I have hunted portraits all my life. I never get tired of looking at them,’ he confesses, ‘and in turn, I feel observed by them.’ In the 1990s, he began following the art market and collecting in earnest. Ricci had an office, bookshop and apartment in Paris and there and in Monaco he was to acquire many of his largely French 18th-century terracottas, some of the most compelling by less familiar names. A superb example is the bust of an intense, low-browed individual, signed by one A. Riffard and given the Revolutionary date of ‘9. Fructidor an 3e’, from 1794–95.
Another naturalistic tour de force is one of very few known terracottas by Francesco Orso, also known as François Orsy, a Piedmontese sculptor also active in Paris. Orso is responsible for the rarest sculptures here: the disconcerting life-size polychrome wax portrait busts of Vittorio Amadeo III of Savoy and his wife Maria Antonia Ferdinanda di Borbone, complete with painted papier-mâché clothes. The revolution destroyed the sculptor’s courtly patronage in Paris, and he diversified into the more overtly commercial world of the waxwork with a show featuring an effigy of the aristocratic revolutionary leader the Comte de Mirabeau and popular tableaux on themes such as Marat’s assassination by Charlotte Corday.
Unsurprisingly, given Ricci’s passion for Bodoni, the neoclassical looms large. At the centre of the Napoleonic gallery, lined with marble busts – Italian, English and Danish – is a model of Canova’s ideal head of Dante’s muse Beatrice, first conceived as an idealised portrait of Mme Récamier. The display offers a witty face-off between Wellington and Napoleon on opposing pedestals, but the emperor prevails with a sequence of classicising family portraits. Above hangs the second version of Francesco Hayez’s The Penitent Magdalene (1825). Here the Romantic artist has transposed the chilly perfection of Canova’s marble surfaces into pigment.
An unusual and endearing mid 18th-century Italian group portrait presents the family of Antonio Ghidini, a cloth merchant to the Bourbon court in Parma, painted by his friend, the court artist Pietro Melchiorre Ferrari (1734/5–87). In this Zoffany-style conversation piece there is no doubting Ghidini’s business, as he points to documents mentioning his association with his trading partners in Manchester and his wife sits stiffly under her salmon-pink stomacher in sprigged and striped silk finery.
Yet it would be misleading to suggest that Ricci’s ever-curious eye never ranged beyond the 18th and 19th centuries. He owns a number of 17th-century marbles, including that of the all-powerful prelate Cardinal Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri degli Albertoni, who effectively ran the papacy under Clement X – irresistible in profile. In the 2000s Ricci also added, for example, Ludovico Carracci’s handsome three-quarter length Portrait of Lucrezia Bentivoglio Leoni (1589), executed two years before the sitter’s death. Flanking the same door is Philippe de Champaigne’s Portrait of the Duchesse d’Aiguillon (c. 1650), and viewed beyond is an unusual sensual and erotically charged work by Luca Cambiaso (1527–85), Venus Blindfolding Cupid.
Yet Ricci has also always been attracted to what he describes as the art of visionary madness, by the surreal, and by what is prosaic and popular. The museum’s cabinet of curiosities includes a narwhal horn, once thought to have belonged to the unicorn. Its walls are lined with particularly gruesome vanitas paintings and sculptures. Centre stage among the skulls is a decomposing head by Jacopo Ligozzi (1547–1627), its flesh and rotten teeth seething with maggots and flies.
Only superficially more benign are the drawings of the Codex Seraphinianus, first published in two volumes in 1981 – Ricci’s most extraordinary publication. These meticulously detailed explications of the bizarre and the fantastical illustrate an encyclopaedia of an imaginary world conceived by the artist Luigi Serafini in the 1970s and written in a language still understood only by its creator. Certainly its pages are at home in the Labirinto della Masone complex – another visionary creation, in effect a Gesamtkunstwerk, an all-embracing art work expressing the life and taste of one man.
