Deciding to reblog these with my own thoughts and feelings about the subject now
My school was having a Rez Fair for Easter so there were many booths with many different religious organizations and groups on campus. A few of the tables asked me if I had any religious background. I said I was LDS because I felt as though I would get a stronger reaction if I just said “Mormon” and I didn’t want that today. Most of the people were nice and did not seem to mind or care. However, I was having a nice conversation about Thomas and Simon Peter until he asked me if I had any religious background. I said I was LDS, Latter-day Saint, and he immediately looked away and kinda avoided eye contact me until he asked me if I was still the church. I said yes, and he looked even more uncomfortable and I was starting to feel uncomfortable too, so I just said “thank you” and walked to the next booth.
Even though the guy didn’t say anything wrong, I could feel his negative judgement on me. That did get me thinking about some other experiences I’ve had with saying I’m Mormon and then people responding with negativity or mockery. One of the notable ones was when I was in highschool and talking to my friends about attending BYU. They asked what it was and googled it to find out it was a Private Mormon school. They immediately began laughing and asking me if I was Mormon. Confirming it kinda made them laugh harder lol. I can understand them laughing because of the things I’ve said before, it must have come as a shock.
I would like to know how people have reacted to you saying you’re LDS/Mormon and if anyone has ever had a bad reaction to it.
Side note: Imo having religious trauma makes some sense as to why someone might be immediately scared/upset over someone coming out as Mormon, though, and that’s valid as long as they don’t do anything to hurt you in any way, of course.
