I was trying to start a group to play Legend of the Five Rings 4th edition and showed the books to a few people. Most wanted to try it, but there was one person who was adamantly against the game. The conversation went something like this.
“Why don’t you like the game?”, I asked.
“It’s broken.”, they huffed. “How so?”, I replied.
“The book is full of rules for combat, but little about social sparing and diplomacy.”
“Oh, well there are some schools (think something like D&D classes) that excel in that and there is a whole chapter on social situations. There is also a whole other book that expands greatly on that. There are adventures all about dealing with samurai lords in their courts. Half the game is combat the other half…”
“The game is broken! If social skills were that important they would be included in the core book and not a second book. They are a bad company with bad writers who released a shit game and tried to patch it with a second shitty book!”
I had never heard of an expansion book for an rpg referred to as a game patch the same way one would refer to a video game. It boggled my mind. It was if they believed table top rpgs should have everything you would ever need in one book. The core book for L5R was already hundreds of pages. Anything released after they considered a patch for a messy game. I tried to explain table top rpgs we’re not like video games but they would not have it.
I guess this isn’t really a question, but I saw what you said about what people think game design is like and needed to add my two cents somewhere. Your response reminded me of this story.
Ok, there's a lot going on here, so here's some out of order responses.
RPGs absolutely get patched by new books, this has been happening for ages, even if you didn't think about it that way. That's what "half" editions are. D&D 3.5 was literally a huge patch for 3.0. Is a game bad if it gets patched that way? No, especially if you look at it post patch it might be better. Wanting a game to be perfect from the getgo is... fine, I guess, but it's unrealistic. No RPG survives contact with actual players completely unpatched, whether that means a whole new book or a page of errata online.
I think it's fair criticism to point out that it's dissonant when a game expects diplomacy but has way more combat-relevant pages. That said, it sounds to me like this book is leagues ahead of D&D.
It honestly seems to me like your friend is POISONED BY THE DISCOURSE, in essence, they have strong, angry opinions because the chunk of the internet they hang out in has strong angry opinions. The "too much stuff for combat" is telling because that's a common criticism lobbed at D&D and other games catch flack for it. Assuming that you're capturing the conversation (not saying you'd do it in bad faith, just that it's hard to recall something totally verbatim), it really sounds to me like they heard something about L5R and were like "sounds super shitty, glad I, a cool, reasonable person, don't play that game". It's telling that he goes from "the game is broken" to "if it was fixed then it sucks because it needed to be fixed" to "it's a shitty game, ok!?"
But yeah, sounds like you hit a nerve by accident, it happens. I hope you guys were able to pAtCh things up. Nyuck.
Thanks for writing in!

OC kiss- Day 4 (Reunion)
At the end of her long journey, finally having earned some well deserved rest, Sakurako returns to where it all began, and where it all will end.
Sakurako and Akira are from our L5R campaign that we were never able to finish, so some artistic liberties have been taken related to the end of the tale.
The mask on her face and the mon upon her neck felt heavier than they ever had before as Sakurako handed her traveling papers over to the Scorpion at the gate leading into Shosuro lands. Her long journey was finally reaching its end, as was the reserves of energy she had remaining after the final stretch of the search for the Tanaka Twelve had taken so much out of everyone involved. Her left arm hung limply in its sleeve, the bones in her hand still not fully healed, and the young samurai wasn't entirely sure they ever would. “Welcome home, Shosuro-san.” Sakurako didn't recognize the voice of the Scorpion samurai, but the wedding last winter had been such an event that much of the Shosuro clan already knew of the Daimyo’s new wife.
“Thank you. Would you happen to know if the Lord is present at the castle or if she is away?” Sakurako shook ever so slightly as she spoke, but if the other noticed they did not speak of it. Sakurako was anxious, knowing fully well that the moment she returned to the Castle, she would be leaving the line of duty, and she wasn't sure she was fully ready for that. There was much she wanted to see, much she wanted to accomplish, but her health had rapidly begun to decline in the last leg of her duty to Yuki-sama. Sakurako had to retire so she would have those final years to spend with her wife, she owed her that much.
A nod came from the samurai guarding the entrance of the castle town, affirming that Akira was still present. “Shosuro-sama was quite intent on meeting you here herself, but after much convincing is awaiting your arrival at Shiro no Shosuro. Do you require an escort, Shosuro-san?” Though their expression was obscured by their mask, it was clear that the samurai was staring at Sakurako’s form shaking in the wind as if she would fall over at any moment.
Sakurako was a proud woman, fiercely independent and hated when others pitied her. However she knew how far she could push her body, and was well aware that she was reaching that limit. “Yes, please.” The trek uphill to the Castle she would soon call her home was much easier on horseback than it would have been on foot, as well as being far safer than if she had been alone. It was not long before she dismounted the offered pony and stood at the bottom of the steps of castle Shiro no Shosuro. Bowing and giving her thanks to the departing guard, Sakurako began the long trek up the steps, her thoughts drifting to the journey that brought her finally back here, finally back home.
To her surprise, by the time she was halfway up the stairs she felt a presence by her side, guiding her upward. Her eyes flicked over to her new companion, a taller woman adorned in a black and red kimono with a frightening red oni mask. No words were exchanged by the two women as Sakurako leaned into her fellow, allowing herself to be aided up the stairs. She felt a strong but gentle arm holding her by the shoulders as they reached the top and the door was opened by an attendant before either of them even spoke to be allowed inside. Aided inside, Sakurako let out a soft sigh as the door shut behind them. Sakurako’s traveling pack was plucked from her back by the elder samurai and handed off to an attendant as the woman in the oni mask took her hand and led her further into the castle, the two only stopping when the door to the daimyo’s bedroom slid shut behind them. “Sakurako-chan, when I read your last letter, I feared I had lost you.”
Sakurako slid off her mask before reaching up to do the same to the elder Samurai. If it were anyone else doing this, it would be rude, improper and they’d likely lose their hand if not more. Piercing blue eyes stared down silently as the mask was removed as the two were face to face for only the second time ever. “You haven’t, and you won’t. Even when my body can move no more…” Sakurako turned away to cough into her sleeve, distinct red droplets left behind as a stark reminder of their limited time together. “I will always be yours, my lord, my Daimyo, my wife.” As Sakurako stepped onto the tips of her toes and Akira leaned down to allow her to reach, the two shared the first kiss of the rest of their lives together.

Started this drawing bc i wanted to draw Eiko's coat... And it evolved into this.
Someone offscreen is probably shouting at her, begging her to come back to the palace from where she eloped. Court life is boring, she misses horse riding in the plains of Unicorn lands.
