In the past five years, only 6 Southern Resident Killer Whales were born and survived:
1. J50 Scarlet
2. J51 Nova
3. L121 Windsong
4. L122 Magic
5. J53 Kiki
6. L123 Lazuli
In that same amount of time, 17 (including numbered but unnamed infants) died:
1. L79 Skana
2. J8 Speiden
3. L100 Indigo
4. L53 Lulu
5. L120 no name
6. J32 Rhapsody
7. L27 Ophelia
8. J55 no name
9. L95 Nigel
10. J14 Samish
11. J28 Polaris
12. J54 Dipper
13. J34 Doublestuf
14. J2 Granny
15. K13 Skagit
16. J52 Sonic
17. L92 Crewser
There has also been many sillborns that were never numbered or never seen at all. Not a single calf has been born and survived since November 2015. This is a reminder to push for the removal of the lower snake river dams, to always be whale wise, and to contact govenor Inslee and senator Murray to support action to help the SRKWs.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the fantastic Flame Con – taking myself all the way from The Bronx, to Brooklyn. (I drove…it wasn’t that serious of a trip). Never before having attended, I was elated with the vibe, the energy, and the beautiful people. I have never attended a con in which everyone said excuse me when they bumped into you. What?! No one ever has time for politeness at Cons! Well, they do at Flame Con. I was super excited about the panels, the exhibitors and the artists, even sparking up a conversation with Tee “Vixen” Franklin!
As I was exploring this con for the first time, I was drawn to the variety of artists and styles exhibited on the show floor. I could not take my eyes off of the illustrations of beautiful brown bodies. I knew I wanted to talk more with the queer artists of color that caught my eye. I pulled up my iPad and interviewed a few artists who I felt particularly drawn to.
Yesenia Moises & Shauna J Grant
First are two women whose artwork gave me shiny anime eyes walking by. Yesenia Moises and Shanuna J Grant, the best part is – they are both from my town, The BX!
Tumblr media
Yesenia (left) is a freelance toy designer and illustrator – who loves to draw cute girl characters! Shauna (right) an illustrator and comic creator known for her web comic “Princess Love Pon.” I stopped at table L122 to chat with these two lovely ladies.
Black Nerd Problems: What inspires your artistic style?
Shauna J. Grant: Well my reason to live is magical girls, because Sailor Moon was the first anime I saw, it is what really got me into wanting to create stories and do art. So my art style is very heavily focused on anime meeting western cartooniness. Because I just love animation in general and I just want an endless emersion of perfectly blending those two together with lots of pastels and pink because they give me life.
Yesenia Moises: What inspires me is a mix of things, I also started out watching Sailor Moon and that’s how I started drawing, so it’s a lot of anime inspiration, but these days I’m inspired by graphic design too. I don’t know how to explain it, I draw shapes and it works out.
BNP: What is the most important thing for you as artists of color?
YM: Just do it, just do it… just do it, cuz a lot of times people get discouraged. Especially these days with social media, seeing people posting amazing art every single day, or every other day you feel like, “oh my god I need to be on that level but I’m not”, it keeps you from doing stuff, when you should just create.
SJG: Also staying true to yourself is really important, it’s very easy to be influenced by other things you see. You don’t see a lot of people of color in media, it’s really easy to get stuck drawing characters that don’t look like you. And I say that from experience, I was in my 20s before I was like oh, let me draw characters that actually look Black. So do what makes you feel happy and put yourself into it.
Tumblr media
You can find both Yesenia (left image) and Shauna (right image) exhibiting at Anime NYC coming this November! Check Shauna’s work at shaunadraws.com and @shaunadrawscute on social media. You can get more of Yesenia’s work at yeseniamoises.com and @elixiadraws on social media.

My videos that WERE at Metacafé.
Metacafe WAS the last video hosting site besides Viddler that had my videos but the FBI pulled another one of their evil power plays when MetaCafé became a totally different hosting site at http://www.metacafe.com/channels/mikeoverson/ on 8-28-21. It's the same way the FBI got rid of my videos at HelpfulVideo, VodPod, Sevenload in Germany, Dekhona in India and a few other sites but at least they gave a warning when they closed Multiply in class L122 at https://www.viddler.com/v/eb751a04 , (the thumbnail is the broken hearts the FBI caused at the end of the class) . The most damage the FBI did was by deleting my account at YouTube in class 253 at https://www.viddler.com/v/60e79346 and my account at Vimeo in class 270 at https://www.viddler.com/v/251723dc and at Xvideos in class 260 at https://www.viddler.com/v/60351b3b AND in class 275 at https://www.viddler.com/v/25578221 , (and closing my accounts at Veoh and DailyMotion). After the FBI closed^these I had rated X hosting sites that were taking my videos for quite a while until the FBI deleted all my videos at Hamster, SpankWire, SpankBang, Empflix and six other sites but the worst one was Pornhub in the next paragraph.
In class 305 https://www.viddler.com/v/58cf7cda at 11 to 18 minutes is how happy the public was that the FBI could not get rid of all my classes AND how evil it was to  delete divine signs. At 16 minutes I say my Christmas present on 12-25-20 was to post my rated X classes and PMVs at VIDDLER that were saved by Ben Franklin and East Coast Magic, (at the title of class 171 at https://www.viddler.com/v/ecfa5db9 ). I'm guessing that  Pornhub is 3 to 4 times bigger than VIDDLER and the FBI practically closed Pornhub down by having them delete 11 million videos on 12-14-20 apparently just to get rid of my  488 videos at https://www.pornhub.com/users/the1mikeov/playlists . I wrote this at Tumblr on 6-1-21 because it looked like the next FBI plan of attack is to  do something similar at VIDDLER, (which they did by preventing the public from being able to get to my videos at Viddler in August 2021). The reason for writing this on 6-1-21 is I'm hoping that peer pressure, (or the power of prayer at 1, 4 and 14 minutes in class 304 at https://www.viddler.com/v/26603b9f ), can prevent a (FBI) hostile takeover of VIDDLER.
When this^failed to stop the FBI from blocking the public from my videos at Viddler then I had to expose how evil the FBI was being in the PDF D93 on page 259 to 264, the link to D93 is at the^links to my PDFs on this page at^Tumblr AND at https://www.mediafire.com/folder/ad5thdu4a9es4/Documents
My videos are sort of sermons and/or classes from a disabled prophet of God on welfare. I’ve got signs that heaven wanted to keep this prophet job simple and low budget and I apparently filled the billing for it.

Identification List of L Pod Members, 3/31/19.
Here is a list of all the L Pod members present from our sighting of the southern resident killer whales. We sent the photos to Ken Balcomb of the Center for Whale Research, who has studied these whales for over 45 years. Dave Ellifrit did most of the matching. Jeannie Hyde also looked at our photos to ID the whales; their ID lists matched. These are the top experts on SRKWs, and hold the catalog for these whales. The most exciting news was that  the little calf born in December was present, L124 Lucky!! We did not see five L Pod members, including the L54 matriline that often travels separately from the main L Pod. One member L87 now travels with J Pod, leaving the 29 whales that we identified on March 31, 2019.  Photos from Monterey Bay Whale Watch included those taken by Tomoko and Nicene Shimotomai, Daniel Bianchetta, Kara Hall, and Josh Meza-Fidalgo.
MBWW 3-31-2019 SRKW Encounter
Ken Balcomb and his staff at Center for Whale Research and Jeanne Hyde have confirmed the following 29 members of L-pod from our photos. L22    "Spirit" L25    "Ocean Sun" L41    "Mega" L47    "Marina" L55    "Nugget" L72    "Racer" L77    "Matia" L82    "Kasatka" L83    "Moonlight" L85    "Mystery" L86    "Surprise!" L89    "Solstice" L90    "Ballena" L91    "Muncher" L94    "Calypso" L103   "Lapis" L105   "Fluke" L106    "Pooka" L109   "Takoda" L110   "Midnight" L113   "Cousteau" L115   "Mystic" L116   "Finn" L118   "Jade" L119   "Joy" L121   "Windsong" L122   "Magic" L123   "Lazuli" L124   "Lucky" (unofficial name) L54 subgroup was not found in these photos - although this did not mean that they were not there. L54 (with her two offspring, L108 and L117) with two adult males, L84 (sole survivor of L9 matriline), and L88 (sole survivor of L2 matriline) are known to hang out often on the Vancouver Island coast and seldom come into the Salish Sea - according to Ken Balcomb. Although L87 "Onyx" is included in L Pod, he is associated with J Pod. He is an orphan (after his mother L32 died in 2005); we used to watch him following right behind J2 "Granny". He still travels with J Pod. L77 "Matia" (born 1987), is the mother of L124 (born December 2018). L77 has another female calf, L119 "Joy". We saw three-month-old L124 traveling with its mother and sister in Monterey Bay, often escorted by L41 "Mega" and other large males. L25 "Ocean Sun" (born 1928) is the presumed mother of Tokitae (Lolita) - the only living SRKW in captivity. "Ocean Sun" has outlived her family members, except for Tokitae at Miami Seaquarium; she travels with L41 "Mega" and his sisters. Referenced material • Center for Whale Research ORCA ID GUIDEP 2018 • Encounter logs from https://www.whaleresearch.com/ • Name of the whales are referenced from The Whale Museum – Adopt and Orca Program, San Juan Island, Friday Harbor, WA. NOTES: L90 Ballena is surfacing with a bow-backed, stiff way, which CWR has begun to notice as when she is presumed to be pregnant. This is her fourth potential, and at 29 years old, she has never been seen with a living calf, likely due to her smaller  size. “ L90 currently has the sway-backed look she has had in the past when we have suspected her to be pregnant. “
L89 Solstice is Missing “ The L54s and L88 were not present during this encounter. Everybody else in L pod was photographed by the end of the day with the exception of L89. Our friend and colleague Jared Towers had had the L12s up off northern Vancouver Island in front of Alert Bay on January 13th and L89 had not been present then either. L89 was last seen on November 5th, 2021 and he looked normal at that time. This is worrisome but we will continue looking for L89 until the rest of the southern residents are thoroughly documented in 2022. “

Encounter #40 (Sequence 2 & 3) - Sept 5, 2020
NOTE: As far as I know, this encounter hasn’t officially announced as being released by the Center for Whale Research (via email that they send out when they’ve posted an encounter). Because of this, some pictures might be added at a later date if they ever send out an email and I have ID some of the whales to the best of my ability as some of the pictures had no captions, but IDable photos. I’ve done IDs to the best of my ability and if you notice a mistake, feel free to point it out and I’ll fix it asap.

*Long sigh*
Alright guys. I’m here with an angry post about this. Please bear with me.
Tumblr media
[x] This is a map of the Columbia Watershed. The Snake River is highlighted in yellow, the Columbia in blue.
Tumblr media
[x] This is a map of the dams on the Columbia and the Snake. Bonneville, The Dalles, John Day, and McNary are on the Columbia. Ice Harbor, Lower Monumental, Little Goose, and Lower Granite are on the Snake.
On February 6, 2021, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) proposed a " $33 billion infrastructure and community investment strategy that would breach the four lower Snake River dams and reorder much of the fish, energy and commodity transportation systems of the Pacific Northwest.”
[x]
Good news, right?
Yeah, it’s great news until you get to the part about the time frame.
“If turned into legislation, passed and implemented according to Simpson’s timeline, Lower Granite Dam would be breached in the summer of 2030 and the river that was swallowed by slackwater 55 years earlier would reemerge. The breaching of Little Goose, Lower Monumental and Ice Harbor dams would follow and the entire stretch of the river would return to its free-flowing state by 2031.“ That’s NINE YEARS. 9. N-I-N-E. The Southern Residents can barely find enough food now. There’s no way they’ll last 9 years and still be an even barely viable population (not that they’re a strong, viable population at the moment anyways).
Lets go over everyone who died from 2010-2020. 10 years, approximately how many years it will be for the river to be free flowing.

Now, we’ve lost 15 females over the course of 10 years and have only gained FIVE in that same time period.
Now that we’ve looked at the births and deaths, lets look at the current living population, shall we?
J pod has 10 adult females, (2 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 2 adult males; 8 young males; 1 unknown gender.
K pod has 7 adult females (2 post-reproductive); 1 young female; 7 adult males; 2 young males.
L pod has 15 adult females (5 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 6 adult males; 9 young males; 1 unknown gender.
Total Males: 15 adult, 18 juvenile
Total Females: 23 reproductive, 9 post reproductive, 7 juvenile
Total Unknown Genders: 2
Now, that may seem like a good number of females, but we have to keep in mind that they need to produce healthy, living, viable, FEMALE calves to keep this population growing. While all calves are loved and cherished in this population, we need more females. This population is on a downhill trend that can NOT LAST NINE YEARS WITHOUT ENOUGH FOOD.  “When the whales starve, their pregnancies fail. Southern Resident females used to give birth once every five years, just like females in other killer whale populations. But their average birth frequency has dropped to about once every ten years.“ [x]
For anyone who still might not be getting the picture, here. I have a picture for you. This is the population census that the Center for Whale Research updates on December 31 and July 1 each year.

[x] Do you see the trend? It’s falling. This population was decimated by the capture era (1960s-1970s) and is now continuing to struggle FIFTY YEARS LATER.
Another point: Reducing whale watching will NOT HELP. Whale watching companies help keep recreational boaters away from the whales and help inform them on the laws. They also report sightings and help keep population tabs. If a whale isn’t looking good, they can report that. If they didn’t see a whale for multiple encounters in a row and the CWR hasn’t been able to get out with them, they can let CWR know. This is a community effort, tracking and monitoring the SRKW. Whale Watch boats also ensure that, when Sound Watch (which mostly operates off the West side of San Juan Island) is not around, that local recreational boaters follow the Be Whale Wise guidelines and keep their distance from the Southern Residents.
“The Southern Residents pulled through the shooting era and pulled through the capture era, but if Ken is right, they will not pull through the conservation era. They are long-lived animals, so they will still be here—yet they will be gone...“We’re at the point—we’re past the point—of no return.”“ [x]
I appreciate Rep. Mike Simpson’s efforts to try to breach the Lower Snake River Dams, but the time to act is now. We are watching extinction happen before our very eyes. Breach the dams in 2021! NO FISH, NO BLACKFISH! “What will we lose if we let the Southern Residents go extinct?” “Our minds.” [x]

InkTober2017 nr. 30: L47 Marina, flanked by her daughter L91 Muncher and her grandson, L122 Magic. Marina has two more living offspring; L83 Moonlight and L115 Mystic and a second grandson, L110 Midnight. The Southern Residents are in trouble. New research predicts a chance of 25% that this endangered population of whales will go extinct within 100 years. But it is not too late! These animals need more food; more Chinook salmon. The best thing for both species would be the removal of the four Lower Snake River dams.
