Your ‘two legged chirps’ au makes me think of an old french movie that I saw like once a year at midnight and barely remember. It’s called l'enfant qui voulait être un ours and it’s like a small child who’s raised by a polar bear.

There’s a couple scenes that I think would parallèle well. Like when he’s trying to play with the other polar bear children they’re like, “you smell weird, you don’t look like bear, why are you like that? Haha you’re so small and weak, I could bite right through you”

Of course the re-immigration into human society is a lot more traumatic in this movie. But I think the boy growling at other human children would be similar to y/n chirping

An Amazing Place

One detail that is never mentioned is that in Washington, D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument.

With all the uproar about removing the ten commandments, etc., this is worth a moment or two of your time. 

On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., are displayed two words:

Laus Deo.

No one can see these words. 

In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn't care less. These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches above the ground, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America. Laus Deo! 

Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. 

Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world. So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say:

'Praise be to God!'

Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States , it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. 

It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation - Laus Deo - 'Praise be to God!' From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. 

From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfant - a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north, the Jefferson Memorial to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.

A cross you ask? 

Why a cross? 

What about separation of church and state? 

Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution.

How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice.

When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848 deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society.

hi there! a good place to start would be the improbable patriot biography, which very briefly touches on the context of tarare and how beaumarchais first reached out to salieri. it’s one of the most easily accessible and comprehensive beaumarchais biographies out there, and the majority of the book is available for free here if the $26 price tag is out of reach for you. i also have a print copy of my own and would be happy to send you scans of the missing pages if you need them!

pierre beaumarchais and antonio salieri were first introduced to each other in a professional context when beaumarchais sought a composer for his libretto of tarare (later revived under the title le couronnement de tarare). after a brief period of correspondence, beaumarchais invited salieri to stay with him at his house in paris, where they worked together on composition for the opera. their relationship seemed to have a largely paternal dynamic; beaumarchais lavished favors and kindness on salieri, who in turn respected beaumarchais’ judgement and adapted the music to his every whim. the two remained in contact after the initial productions of tarare, with beaumarchais excitedly sharing the news of its later successes to salieri. even after beaumarchais’ death, salieri referred to him fondly. there was clearly a strong mutual respect between the two, which can best be seen in beaumarchais’ dedication of the tarare libretto to salieri:

“A monsieur Salieri. Mon ami, je vous dédie mon Ouvrage, parce qu'il est devenu le vôtre. Je n'avais fait que l'enfanter vous l'avez élevé jusqu'à la hauteur du Théâtre. if you want the full translation of the dedication let me know, but the relevant bits to focus on here are: beaumarchais stating that salieri alone is responsible for raising tarare to “the heights of theater” (vous l'avez élevé jusqu'à la hauteur du théâtre), believing that he owes the work’s success to salieri entirely (si notre ouvrage à du succès, je vous le devrai presqu'entier), and finally saying that he is honored to be salieri’s poet, servant, and friend (je m'honore moi d'être votre poète, votre serviteur et votre ami). for a man as frequently vain and proud as beaumarchais, this is high praise indeed.

looking beyond the biography and tarare dedication, the sources we have looking into the salieri-beaumarchais collaboration are unfortunately fairly limited- but they are out there. some of beaumarchais’ correspondence with salieiri is documented, and while access to the letters is restricted i was able to find references to them in other papers and books, which i’ll link below:

chapter xxx of the book beaumarchais and his times: sketches of french society in the eighteenth century from unpublished documents, volume 4 (available for free via google books, and pdf transcription available here) has an extremely in-depth discussion of the writing, composing, production, and reception of tarare, and i think you will find the translated quote from salieri regarding his stay with beaumarchais in a letter to eugénie beaumarchais delarue on page 191 most helpful:

“I stayed with your celebrated papa [Pierre Beaumarchais] and your adorable mamma, who loaded me with favours and politeness; we two used to sit down in the afternoon at the piano, and play sonatas, arranged as duets. At two o'clock M. or Madame de Beaumarchais came into the room, and said to us, ‘Let us have dinner, my children;' we dined; I went out afterwards to take a walk, to read the papers in the Palais Boyal or to some theatre. I came in early. When M. de Beaumarchais was not at home, I went up to the second floor to my apartment; sometimes I put my servant, a drunken German, to bed; I slept in a room, whence, working as I did every day, I saw the dawn from my bed with a heavenly pleasure. Towards ten o'clock M. de Beaumarchais came into my room; I sang to him as much as I had composed of our grand opera; he applauded me, encouraged me, and gave me his  instructions in quite a paternal manner. On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., are displayed two words:  Laus Deo.

No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn't care less.

Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with everyone you know. These words have been there for many years; they are  555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America.

Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highestpoint over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world.

So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say 'Praise be to God!'

Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation - 

Laus Deo - Praise be to God! 

From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into fourmajor segments. From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfant ..... a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north. The Jefferson Memorial is to the south, the Capitol to the east, and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.

A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about the separation of church and state? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution. So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice.

When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848 deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Praise be to God! Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood given by the founder and first Presidentof our unique democracy 'One Nation, Under God.'

Pourquoi le sexe est binaire

Dans l'espèce humaine, on peut répartir les individus en deux sexes : mâle ou femelle. Cette distinction ne peut pas toujours être effectuée d'après les organes sexuels ou la morphologie, mais elle repose toujours sur des bases génétiques. Les individus d'un même sexe ne peuvent pas se reproduire entre eux, mais ils peuvent se reproduire avec les individus de l'autre sexe.

Quand les gens disent ou écrivent que le sexe n'est pas binaire, ils ont souvent une de ces idées derrière la tête : le sexe est un spectre, le sexe est bimodal, on ne peut pas réellement définir mâle et femelle, il existe des variations qui ne rentrent dans aucune catégorie existante, il existe plus de deux sexes, ou le sexe est une construction sociale qui n'est pas basée sur la biologie.

Cet article va faire un rapide tour d'horizon sur le sujet, en se concentrant sur le concept de binarité quand on parle de sexe biologique et en survolant les notions que je viens d'énoncer. En revanche, nous n'entrerons dans le détail de certains points que dans d'autres articles, pour éviter que celui-ci ne prenne la forme d'un roman.

Binarité et sexe biologique

Quand on parle de binarité, on parle d'une notion qui n'est composée que de deux éléments distincts. L'exemple le plus simple étant le code binaire informatique, composé uniquement de 0 et de 1. Le 0 et le 1 sont distincts, on ne peut pas les confondre, ils ne se superposent pas.

La question est donc de savoir si la binarité s'applique au sexe. Le sexe est défini comme le moyen de reproduction d'une espèce, déterminé chez les humains par la présence ou non d'un gène SRY actif et de récepteurs, qui déclenche le développement du corps autour de la production de deux types de cellules sexuelles : les petites, appelées spermatozoïdes, ou les grosses, appelées ovules.

Le corps d'une personne, pendant le développement du sexe, s'organise pour la production de tissus ovarien ou testiculaires qui permettrons la création de ces cellules sexuelles. Puis, lors de la puberté, le corps s'adapte en vue de la reproduction, dans le but de transmettre ses gènes pour le mâle, et de survivre à une grossesse portée à terme pour la femelle. Voici la définition que nous retenons.

L'apparence extérieure d'une personne, les cellules sexuelles produites, le type de tissus des organes sexuels, tout cela dépends de la génétique, à savoir du gène SRY. Ce gène est l'interrupteur qui décide du sexe de l'enfant avant qu'il ne soit né. Il se trouve sur le chromosome Y, et il déclenche la transformation du fœtus en mâle grâce à la production de testicules. Sans lui, le fœtus se développera en femelle. En résumé, le sexe d'une personne est déterminé par ses chromosomes, qui vont ensuite déterminer tout le reste.

Le sexe est donc binaire car le corps ne peut créer que deux types de cellules sexuelles, et qu'il n'y a que deux options au niveau de la détermination chromosomique du sexe : Gène SRY actif avec récepteurs, ou pas. Si le gène SRY est présent mais que le corps n'y est pas réceptif, alors l'enfant sera femelle. Si il y a des récepteurs mais pas de gène SRY, l'enfant sera femelle. Pour que l'enfant soit mâle, il faut impérativement un gène SRY auquel le corps est réceptif. Le fait qu'il y ait plusieurs options ne prouve pas qu'il y a un troisième sexe, mais cela explique qu'il y ait plus de filles intersexes que de garçons.

Il est également important de noter que les deux systèmes sexuels sont antagonistes dans leur développement : l'activation du développement mâle entraîne la production d'une hormone anti-mullërienne, qui empêche le développement en femelle. La même chose se produit lors du développement d'une femelle. Il est donc impossible d'avoir un développement qui soit en partie mâle et en partie femelle, puisque l'un annule l'autre.

Et les intersexes alors ?

Lorsque j'explique que le sexe est binaire et que donc il n'y a que deux sexes, on me réponds toujours une variante de : "Tu as déjà entendu parler des intersexes ?". Eh bien oui. J'ai déjà entendu parler des intersexes. J'ai plus qu'entendu parler d'eux, j'ai lu attentivement de nombreux blogs d'intersexes militant.es [1], je me suis renseignée, j'ai essayé de comprendre et d'apprendre. La génétique n'est pas simple, mais il est quand même possible de vulgariser.

Donc, intersexes, c'est quoi ? L'intersexuation est un terme parapluie qui englobe tout les types de variations du développement du sexe chez un individu. La définition varie en fonction des gens, mais ceci est un consensus assez correcte entre toutes les versions. Il s'agit d'une condition médicale, pas d'une identité. En français, on peut trouver l'acronyme TDS, pour trouble du développement sexuel (attention, TDS est aussi l'acronyme de "travailleur.se.s du sexe"). En anglais, il s'agit du DSD pour disorder in sex development.

Une personne intersexe est quelqu'un qui a eu une anomalie dans la détermination du sexe. Comme noté plus haut, c'est la présence d'un gène SRY actif auquel le corps est répondant qui détermine si le fœtus sera mâle ou femelle. Une anomalie peut virtuellement arriver à chaque instant de la différentiations, mais beaucoup de variations sont mortelles pour le fœtus. En conséquence, le nombre de variations intersexe est d'environs quarante, et elles sont toutes référencées.

Parce que les variations sont rares [2] (virtuellement 99,9% de la population rentre entièrement dans la binarité mâle/femelle [3]), et qu'elles causent des problèmes de santé, elles prouvent que le sexe est bien censé être binaire chez les humains. Les personnes intersexes représentent la variable attendue d'un système fondé sur la binarité. En biologie, l'exception confirme la règle.

Mais les êtres humains ne sont pas binaires !

C'est vrai. Il existe une infinité de variations dans le développement sexuel d'un individu, et ces différences peuvent arriver lors de la conception (anomalie génétique), du développement fœtal, de la puberté, etc. Mais ces variations ne changent rien au fait qu'un être humain sera mâle ou femelle, car ce ne sont pas les caractéristiques secondaires qui définissent le sexe.

Beaucoup de gens semblent penser que, puisque certaines femmes sont très masculines d'apparence, ou ont des hormones masculines naturellement dans le corps, ou ne peuvent avoir d'enfants, cela signifie qu'elles sont moins des femmes et plus des hommes. Suivant cette logique, il est possible de créer un spectre de caractéristiques sexuelles secondaires, et de les classer de "complètement mâle" à "complètement femelle". Sauf qu'une femme sans seins est une femme à 100%, tout comme un homme sans testicules, ou sans barbe, ou infertile, est un homme à 100%. Dire le contraire est deux choses : incorrecte, et offensant.

Le sexe est un spectre dans le sens ou il existe une infinité de variations dans le fait d'être femelle, et une infinité de variation dans le fait d'être mâle. Le sexe ne définit pas la personnalité, par exemple (et prétendre l'inverse relève de l'essentialisme biologique). Mais il n'y a pas d’ambiguïté entre les sexes. Aucun être humain, même intersexe, ne possède à la fois un vagin et un pénis, à la fois des ovaires et des testicules, ou ne produit à la fois des ovules et du sperme. Il s'agit d'une chimère, d'un mensonge. La plupart des personnes intersexes ont entièrement l'air mâle ou femelle. Les cas où les parties génitales portent tellement à confusion qu'on doit appeler un spécialiste pour déterminer le sexe du bébé sont immensément rares, bien plus rares que le taux déjà bas de personnes intersexes dans la population.

Qu'est-ce qui pose problème ?

Le problème avec cette croyance est qu'elle provient des personnes transgenres, qui avaient besoin d'un moyen de dire que les femmes trans sont femelles (c'est faux) et les hommes trans mâles (c'est encore faux). Cela leur permet d'avoir accès aux espaces réservés à l'autre sexe et de se retrouver dans les champ romantique des homosexuels du sexe opposé.

Sauf qu'on ne peut pas changer de sexe. Si une femme trans est femelle, qu'est-ce qui fait d'elle une femme trans ? On ne peut pas être mâle à un moment de sa vie, et femelle à un autre. Parce que le sexe n'est ni fluide, ni un spectre, ni bimodal, ni une construction sociale. Le sexe est une réalité biologique, qui est d'une extrême importance.

Le sexe est nécessaire en médecine mais aussi en justice. Si une femme trans est considérée femelle, les statistiques de crimes commis par les femmes vont augmenter alors que ce seront des hommes biologiques qui les commettent. C'est déjà arrivé, c'est en train d'arriver. Les femmes sont oppressées sur la base du sexe, ce qui signifie que les femmes trans sont la classe oppressant les hommes trans. Mais ces problèmes sont ignorés. L'effacement du sexe biologique est un problème qui concerne tout le monde, les femmes en premier.

Conclusion

Le sexe n'est pas un spectre, il est défini par les chromosomes, et toutes les personnes intersexes sont mâle ou femelle et pas un entre-deux. Les chiffres sur la fréquence des intersexes sont à manipuler avec précaution pour plusieurs raisons : Ils sont sujet à manipulation par les activistes, certaines personnes mentent sur leur statut, et le taux d'intersexes dans une population change en fonction de la région du monde !

Nous sommes contre le fait d'utiliser les intersexes pour justifier des changements de lois en faveur de personnes qui ne le sont pas, et pour justifier un modèle anti-science selon lequel le sexe est fluide, spectral, bimodal ou simplement indéfinissable. Prétendre que le sexe est fluide revient à ignorer que les variations causent des problèmes de santé.

It’s still barely September 30 here, but this isn’t 1.1.1 yet. ;)

Hugo’s giving us a thesis statement, and despite my usual disinclination for author prologues, I sort of love it. It sets a rather dire tone for what’s to come, but also very clearly establishes the themes that will reoccur throughout the book: we’re going to be seeing a lot of society-created suffering, which affects characters differently.

I used to think of this as a tripartite example: JVJ is the impoverished working man who commits a crime when he isn’t paid enough to live on, Fantine is the woman who turns to prostitution when she isn’t paid enough to live on, and Cosette is neglected and exploited and denied an education because the people around her see no need to intervene (and the person who does care about her welfare...isn’t paid enough to live on and can’t support her).  Except Gavroche is also an abandoned child; and the momes; and Fantine, who manages to survive and then falls into the problems of an adult woman; and Feuilly was an orphan child, who grew up and tried to change things; and and and...

So, now, I like to think about the preface as offering three lenses with which to view the characters. In each case, you have some combination of characters who are being harmed by that facet of society, and the foils who are not. Some of the harmed people struggle to ‘behave’ (and mostly suffer), while others abandon acceptable behavior (and occasionally flourish, but mostly still suffer). The people not victimized in a particular way sometimes help those who are, and sometimes cause/contribute to suffering of others. It’s almost like a two axis system of ‘socially-approved actions’ and ‘socially-acceptable people’--the people who are rich enough, educated enough, chaste enough (male characters are exempted from this requirement) can do as they want. The poor man (JVJ, Mabeuf, Champmatheiu) can work hard and live frugally or commit crimes ( Thénardier, patron minette); either way, he’s condemned to poverty and/or prison. The comfortable/rich one may try to help others (the bishop, later-Tome JVJ) or exploit them (Tholomyes, Bamatabois), but again society’s judgement of the individual the action taken.

TL; DR: Society doesn’t reward people who follow its rules, but it absolutely punishes vulnerable people whether they follow the rules or not. So, do crimes make society better or at least stop being a jerk to poor people. ~Vicky Hugs

Standing at this railing, on the balcony of Federal Hall in Lower Manhattan, George Washington raised his right hand on April 30, 1789, and swore to defend the Constitution. It was the nation's first presidential inauguration. New York was then the nation's first capital. The city hired French born architect Pierre-Charles L'Enfant to transform the old City Hall at Wall and Broad Streets into a government seat and they called it Federal Hall. His design blended neoclassical ornament with symbolism, including this elaborate railing featuring 13 arrows, one for each state. Before the inauguration, Washington stopped at the new Senate Chamber before greeting the crowd of onlookers from the balcony. He took the oath outdoors so that citizens could witness the historic ceremony, a tradition followed ever since. “Dodo” by Stromae addresses a rather dark life theme: domestic violence.  Interestingly (and perhaps disturbingly) enough, that was not what brought my attention to the song.  What brought my attention to it was the fact that there was this French music producer titling his song as “Dodo”.  In other words, the word “Dodo” sparked my interest in the song, and here’s why:

I proudly hail from New Orleans, Louisiana, where the now-seriously-endangered language of French/Louisiana Creole used to flourish.  While the language itself is on the brink of going extinct, there are still some vestiges of it that survived the tides of time and continue to thrive in New Orleanian society.  One of these vestiges involves lexical entries of words like “dodo” and phrases like “fais dodo” into the English on this particular region of the US. 

“Dodo” is the noun for “sleep” in French, and “fais dodo” literally means “Go to sleep!”, something parents would tell their children who would happen to be found still awake when they shouldn’t/weren’t expected to be.  However, the term “fais dodo” transitioned from Standard French into Louisiana Creole semantically to denote the name of a dancing event usually held on weekend nights in Southern Louisiana, an event during which children should be asleep so that adults can enjoy the night.  These are things I learned throughout my years of schooling, but before all of that I was first exposed to “dodo” via a short lullaby that my grandparents would sing to their children, who in turn would sing to their children, who would also sing to their children: “Nooo no, no bè, do; nooo no, no bè, do”.

Despite being such a simple word, I had a rather strong nostalgic, cultural tie to “dodo”, which would ultimately transfer to Stromae’s song.  So in honor of such a strong tie to this one word, I'm going to start my series (hopefully) of song posts every Friday from now on with Stromae’s “Dodo”.  For this post and every other song post, I will provide the lyrics in both the original language (in this case, French) and English.  Throughout the original language lyrics you’ll see certain words in bold; those are words I don’t know that I’ll make a vocabulary list for below the song lyrics.  So without further ado, take a listen and see if you can follow the lyrics while listening to the song!
