Whole cities, even.” Ben grins, pleased to learn an interesting and telling fact about the ever-mysterious Armitage Hux. “That's awesome. You should do that.” “It's not in the stars,” Hux says stiffly. “Why not?” “You're awfully young, Ben. I don't expect you to understand,” Hux sighs. Come on, they're only like a few years apart. “We're not so different. I'm training here. You're training there. Sometimes I think about what I would do if I wasn't a Jedi.” “Isn't that against your code?” “Maybe,” Ben shrugs. “But I can't help my imagination. I'd like to live in a house with my family. And take long trips on my ship, living like a pirate or something.” He knows he sounds silly, but he hopes Hux won’t scrutinize him too harshly. “A pirate?” “Or something!” “You’re a funny little boy,” Hux smirks. He’s delighted, it would seem.

So here’s the main piece for @ballvvasher​‘s wonderful fic Ergodicity! It’s been so lovely working with her on this and honestly the fic turned out better than I could have ever imagined, so I’ve felt super lucky to have such great source material to work with. It spans over pretty much their whole lives up until they’re adults, so if benarmie is your thing you’re gonna have a great time with this one. I really hope you all enjoy the fic and that I can do it justice!

Summary: 

Ergodicity: the probability that any state will recur, while having zero probability that any state will never recur.

Anakin Skywalker died honored and venerated as a hero of the Galactic Republic after he and Jedi Master Mace Windu executed Chancellor Palpatine—the heinous, clandestine Sith Lord. In the aftermath, Padmé lived on husbandless on Naboo and dedicated her life to preserving democracy and raising their children. Obi-Wan lived on to mentor Luke in the ways of the Force and the Jedi, but never truly parted with Anakin, his slain Padawan and oldest friend.

Our story finds Ben Solo burdened by the legacy of a grandfather who he never met, the bitterness toward an absent father, and the building resentment of a senator mother preoccupied with rising tensions in the Senate. Ben confides in a boy a few years his senior, young Armitage Hux, whose relationship with his father is so harrowing that he often wishes he were dead. The universe perpetually pushes the boys together when they need it the most. Is love enough to save Hux from his life of torture, enough to pull Ben from falling farther than Anakin ever had?

Here are my 1st entry for the @kyluxbigbang. Unfortubately my writer had to step out so there is no fic with it, but I can still (with permission from the writer) give you the context with bits of the outline of the story that was supposed to accompagny this. (also click on the pictures, they’re bigger than that:)

Also if anyone is interested in taking on that story (based only on the pictures or based on the outline below) feel free to do it (and yes, you can embed the drawings, just let me know;)

After Starkiller event, Hux and Kylo did not immediately make it back to the Finaliser (magnetic field distortion or or the explosion made them go astray)  Their shuttle crash on an Outter Rim planet ‘covered in jungle foliage, damp soil, rocks, and not much else‘. They are the only survivors and Kylo is in a bad state.

At night, they hear noises from the nearby threes and Hux finally decides to seek shelter in the broken shuttle, dragging Kylo along with him (PICTURE 1) and then patching him Kylo up.

Comes the day and Hux decides to go find some civilisation, taking Kylo with him. That’s when they meet one, and then an entire herd of...dinosaurs! They hide in a tree and are “saved” (the dinos were herbivors) by dino/lezards humanoïdes that bring them to their town and provide medical assistance to Kylo  and a place for them to stay. Hux lies about their identities (tells they were shot on a diplomatic mission) and the mayor of the town ensure them that transport frequently skim their space and that they’ll quick find one to bring them home.

Turns out the lezard people are in conflit with bird-like people, and since Hux had the very good idea to tell they were diplomats, the mayor asks him if he would use his skills to help them with the negociations. Hux agrees, supposing he can fake the role long enough for Kylo to recover and possibly repare a broken ship he spoted while visiting the city. Hux starts his new job (while gathering information/trying to find a powerful radio to contact allies) and Kylo is pissed he can’t contact Snoke.

At one point Hux and his ‘concubine’ are invited at some reception, where the mayor (who I made look like a character from the show “Dinosaurs”, i know) purposefully let them alone in a smoking room with a  suspicious curtain (hiding a ‘copulation’ space) (PICTURE 2). Hux and Kylo use that time to sneek out and send an SOS using the radio of the warroom. They are back before the mayor (who is disapointed they did not copulate) returns. 

Negociations keep going and one day Hux learns the the bird people possess a weapon of mass destruction. The situation is worst than he though, it is getting dangerous, Kylo and him need to get out. They try to leave the town at night and steal domesticated dinosaurs. Hux takes the bigger one and Kylo is not happy (PICTURE 3). But they don’t go far. A chicken person who was planting explosives on bridges stops them. They manage to kill him but have to run back from where they left when a big T-rex arrives (and eat the chicken guy’s corpse).

Since they had to go back, they decide to stick on to the previous plan - if Kylo can go quicker with the ship’s repairs. Hux goes back to negociations but the chicken people decided to step to the next level. The lezard mayor is attacked and Hux saves him - though he doesn’t make it unscathed. He goes back “home” to take a shower and meets kylo (who doesn’t immediatly notices he’s hurt) working on one of the ship’s pieces. Thus the converssation:

‘Kylo: What happened to your "negotiating talents," General?'

Hux: I used them to strangle another one of those birds’ (PICTURE  4)

The war is about to start when Kylo fly away with the ship...alone. Hux cross the jungle (kind of resigned to die doing so) to try and find Kylo. He finally does in an outpost where the chicken people keep their missile silo...but isn’t pleased with what he sees... Kylo broke the roof with his ship and is trying to transfer energy from the weapons into it (the ship could fly by now but didn’t have enough power to leave the planet). It all seems dangerous and radioactive. Kylo is wan, sweaty, with glazed eyes. He told Hux he ‘didn’t have to come, that he was goning to come back for him’. 

The ship is finally full on power, they leave the war and carnage that rage around them and finally reach space. Only then does Kylo falls over in a dead faint...but wakes up...and Hux decides he’ll make sure they’ll take some time for him to recover before the go back to Snoke/the Order.

His voice was low and soft, his accent much less clipped than that of his brother, almost musical in Matt’s ears. He watched as the cat jumped up, purrs rumbling through the still air of the room as her ears were scratched. She turned in a circle on the table before settling down, curling into a loaf-like ball on the open pages of the book.

“Ah! The lesser known butt-reading technique! Truly you are a lady of much skill.” The man giggled to himself, hair slipping from one shoulder to reveal the line of his neck, inked in a swirling tattoo surrounded by deep purple flowers. He stood, reaching out to move the cat before seeming to reconsider. “I suppose you’re right. I do need a break.”

Instead, he finds that blood and heritage are still the sole currency of value, and that his merit is worth very little in the face of the mediocre House his father has saddled him with.

However, when he finds himself implicated in a covert plot to restore England to the past glory of its Imperialistic days, he sees the opportunity to satisfy his ambition and achieve the greatness he deserves. To reach the top of society, it is far easier to bring it down first.

It would have been a straightforward plan, were it not for the intervention of one Lord Kylo Ren. All too soon, Hux finds himself swept away by an impossible man, the rise of appetites and affections he has long tried to bury within himself, and the discovery of a power that goes beyond what mere science might explain.

2017 marked my second year of fanfic writing, and although my word count was slightly lower than 2016 (coming in at 106,396 words), I feel like the quality improved somewhat.

 Friends With Renefits: Not too surprising since it’s my most popular work. Most of the comments are just people shouting at the boys for being idiots and I honestly do not blame them.

Effective Human Copulation: A Study: Okay, so this wasn’t written on my own account, but I did technically write it, and let me tell you, being Supreme Leader Snoke is a hell of a lot of fun XD

Chasing After Danger: My fic for the Kylux mini-bang, featuring some amazing illustrations by the lovely @orange-lightsaber. It was a really fun fic to write and I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

A Life in Shadow, my Kylux Reverse Bang story with @paper-wings-burn. I’m stll in the process of posting it but the response so far has been absolutely fantastic and I am totally spoiled by the artwork that goes with it <3

6. Favorite opening lines from a fic in 2017

Inhaling the acrid smell of molten plastisteel Hux frowned. Annoyance burned between his temples, creeping down his spine to tense his muscles into twisted knots. He brushed a hand across his forehead, pinching the bridge of his nose, trying to stave off the beginnings of a headache. This was the fourth such incident this week.

It was time for a vacation.

From Ebb and Flow, it’s such an innocent start to a story, you wouldn’t think it would devolve into eggs/tentacles.

7. Favorite ending line from a fic in 2017

“What if we get caught?”

From On Deck, I have a bit of a weakness for Thanaka and I just thought it would be cute to have them stressing about getting caught when their commanding officers do nothing but fuck in full view of the bridge.

8. Your favourite character to write for in 2017

Ohhh that is hard, I think ultimately, I have most enjoyed writing Matt in A Life in Shadow. It’s very much his story. I’ve focused a lot more on Techie in my past Techienician fics so it was really nice to give Matt his time to shine for once.

9. Your favourite pairing to write for in 2017

Well, I have a very shallow pool of candidates to choose from, so we’ll say Kylux and Techienician :p

10. Your proudest fic from 2017

It’s hard to pick, but I think A Life in Shadow just edges ahead. I’m really pleased with it and can’t wait to see what people think once it’s complete.

Friends with Renefits (37,439 words). I honestly don’t think I can write anything much longer than that, I’ve tried XD

And so this marks the end of my contributions to the 2017 big bang, albeit very late. I had way too many ideas of what I could draw for this fic so instead I just complied together some little sketches that I liked best. I wanna say a big big thank you to @ballvvasher for being so wonderfully patient with me and producing such an incredible fic, you’ve been an absolute pleasure to work with! (Also a quick shout out to @cinnabi for being real supportive throughout both of the krbs I worked with this year, my messy bitch ass couldn’t have done it without you b x). 

You can find the fic in question, Ergodicity, here, it’s well worth a read or five. It’s a sort of prequels aus with lots of great benarmie and lots of ‘what-ifs’ that I felt super lucky to work with. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did!

My Year in Writing

2017 is over! Last year I set a personal goal of writing 100k and I wrote... drumroll please... 58,895 words! Not as much as I would have liked obviously, but I’m proud of where I am now. I’m close to actually completing my first multi-chapter WIP and I’ve expanded my range to few different fandoms and different ships (including FAR more f/f). I participated in three different fic events (I don’t know what else to call them): the yoi-secret-valentines gift exchange, the Otayuri Reverse Bang, and the Kylux Big Bang!

Kylux is still a staple of my writing but I actually wrote more for other ships. On AO3 I only published 5 fics this year (as opposed to last years 9): 1 Rey/Phasma fic (pre TLJ), 2 for Yuri!!! on Ice (one Victuuri and one Otayuri), 1 Supercorp fic for Supergirl, and 1 one-shot for Game of Thrones for my first ever rare-pair fic. I also wrote a couple thousand words of kylux that were more like outlines for a fic and never got posted to AO3 (but are on tumblr).

Published Word Count: 53,311

That’s 9,451 more than last year, but it doesn’t count the (very late) fic I wrote for the Kylux Big Bang, the post-TLJ kylux I’m currently +2k words into, or the rest of Light on the Horizon (most of which is written already). I wrote a couple of original things too which aren’t posted anywhere. So with all that said and everything else personally I’ve done this year, I can be happy with this word count. With a strong start going into next year, I think I’ll keep my goal word count at 100k and hopefully achieve it.

Total Kudos: 335

Actually less than last year! BUT I posted four fewer fics than last year and still came pretty close so I feel pretty good about this number. I haven’t gotten any better about judging my work based on what other people think (I don’t think I ever will). 

What I Wrote This Year

Like A Doll (Yuri!!! On Ice)- My first fic of the year for the yoi-secret-valentines gift exchange. It continues to be possibly the closest I’ve gotten to writing kink? I still love YOI and I think if someone decided to draw either Victor or Yuri in the costumes I picked out for them I would die. I don’t think my writing is the best in this but I had fun.

Falling Down and Getting Up (Yuri!!! On Ice)- A little hurt/comfort Otabek/Yuri for the Otayuri Reverse Bang. This was the first time I worked with an artist and a beta for the piece and I think it came out pretty nicely. (I just looked, I still love the art by @acecakes . It’s written in a slightly different style for me which I used again with my kylux big bang piece. Whether it works or not is debatable but I think the snapshot style really worked for this one. I think this piece took me a while which explains the super long gap between my first fic of the year and this one.

I’m A Supergirl (Supergirl)- I heard the song Supergirl by Anna Naklab while I was in Austria and immediately decided to write a Supercorp fic about it. This is my first and so far only fic for that show and pairing but I definitely have ideas for more (I’m not super motivated to write anything lengthy for them right now but maybe once the next part of the season comes around). (PS: It has 99 kudos right now, YOU can be the one to help me break 100)

A Moment Alone (Game of Thrones)- I wrote this when I came back from Spain (I think traveling hindered my writing ability) about a tiny moment in season 7. This is a fic that I will admit came out of a personal fantasy and I’m not too ashamed to admit that? I’m curious as to how that actually translated into words, but this fic was certainly fun to write.

 Light On the Horizon (Star Wars)- This is the fic I am most proud of this year. I actually wrote most of it last year for NaNoWriMo. I planned it out and tried to write 1k a day for the entire month of November. It was hard and I can’t really explain why it took me nearly a year to come back to it, but I am so happy that it is finally out there. I hoped that it would be completed by TLJ or at least by the end of the year, but I’m not too upset about that. It’s in a good spot and will be finished before I know it! I’m so thrilled by people’s response to it. I absolutely love Rey and Phasma.

Kylux Big Bang 2020 wrap-up and feedback survey results

Hello everyone!

We've concluded yet another Kylux Big Bang, fifth one we've run since TFA first came out - a huge THANK YOU to all our participants who keep this bang going! Amazing job everyone, we hope you've had as much fun with it as with the previous ones, and if this was your first ever KBB - we hope you've enjoyed it, and will join us for the 2021 KBB :D

We've closed the feedback survey, thank you to everyone who responded! Your comments will help shape the coming Kylux Big Bang. Here's the tl;dr summary, (for more info please see below the cut):

Ratio of artwork to wordcount: just right

Time-frame to complete works: just right, we will have a similar timeframe for KBB 2021 with posting in November

Check-ins: were useful, just about the right amount, and will be included again in 2021 KBB

Pairing process: went well, we've addressed more detailed comments below

Type of bang for 2021: REVERSE! The KBB has a tradition of swapping between the type of bang every other year, and over half of responders voted for a reverse bang. For the KBB 2021 artists will provide prompts, and writers will pick from them!

Everyone, regardless of previous involvement in the fandom and their skill level, is welcome to participate in the Kylux Big Bang!  We look forward to many of you signing up for the 2021 KBB :)

KBB Mod Team

Nearly everyone thought the ratio of artwork to wordcount was just right (93%; 94% last year; 5% thought there were too many words per piece of art and 2% that there wasn't enough), and the majority of people (79%, 77% last year) thought the time-frame to complete the works was also just about right, with 14% saying it wasn't enough and 7% saying that it was too much time. We will stick to a similar time frame, starting KBB 2021 around May and finishing in November for the Big Bang and September for the Mini Bang.

Almost everyone (95%; 15% more than last year) finished their projects by the end of the event and was satisfied or highly satisfied with the 2020 KBB (88%).

Most people (86%; 96% last year) found the check-ins useful, with majority of participants (74%, 91% last year) having found the amount of check-ins to be just about right. 16% of respondents thought there were too many, 10% thought there were too few. 86% of all respondents would like to have check-ins in the next KBB. We will continue using them, and review their number.

62% of people want to see a reverse bang this year, and we have taken into account the fact that the previous bangs operated on a switch basis: a regular bang followed by a reverse, followed by a regular. We are happy to announce that this year’s event will be a REVERSE bang, following the regular bang from last year :) Artists will submit their story ideas, and writers will pick from them.

We were happy to hear that almost everyone who voiced their opinions about the pairing process thought it worked well!

As usual, we got the one singular comment about the pairing process being somehow 'rigged'. Here is a link to the pairing algorithm we use every year since 2017. To increase the anonymity of prompts and bids, mod @glass-oceans encoded each prompt with its own unique code (the 'prompt code' everyone has been using for their project), and the artist bids were similarly encoded to avoid bias before the pairing up was done by mod @brainyraccoons based on those codes alone. If people still have concerns and doubts about the pairings, mod @brainyraccoons is more than happy to discuss those, you can message him on tumblr/twitter under the same username or on discord at brainyraccoons#5678.

We would also like to note that most other big bangs operate on a ‘first come, first served’ basis for pairing, where whoever is first to bid on a prompt gets it. We think that is highly unfair to people who cannot access the bidding on time or experience technical difficulties, therefore we employ the pairing algorithm even though it adds at least 15 extra work hours (that’s almost half a week for an office worker) for one mod and is quite a complex process. We do it because we want everyone to have an equal chance at getting their favourite prompts. If you think the process is somehow ‘rigged’, you are in no way obliged to participate in the KBB, and we will not address any further comments of this nature.

We've received a comment asking for space to write down people whom the participants do not wish to be paired up with - this information can be included in the last question on the form which asks whether you would like to let us know of anything else regarding your pairing and prompt preferences.

We are not sure what the comment asking about factoring in time zones for pairing relates to - if the person in question could send us a private message and explain, we would be happy to hear them out!

Other feedback we've received has been extremely positive and encouraging, and we are happy to hear that you've enjoyed the project! We sincerely thank everyone who took the time to share their love for the KBB with us, the project wouldn't be possible without you!

To address the concerns and queries that were raised:

This year we will be changing the way the posting windows work, as many people have raised their concerns over them, and we acknowledge that the posting didn't go as smoothly as anticipated. We will be following the format almost all other Big Bangs take, and people will be able to pick ONE DAY, and one day only, for their posting. ALL art and fic will have to be posted within that time-frame. If there are reasonable mitigating circumstances for people missing their assigned posting date, we will do our best to find a good solution - as always, we will help however we can, and there will be options to post after the original deadline has passed, provided that the team keeps a line of communication open with us at all times when difficulties arise, and all parties know what's happening. Changing the way we do posting should also help with having less fics posted in the last few days and help to spread the posting out better.

Check-ins having no repercussions for the half of the team who isn't progressing with their side of the project: as far as we know, that wasn't the case, and teams who have submitted only partial check-ins were chased up and multiple pinch hitters were assigned where people went MIA. If there are issues with people not pulling their weight in your team, PLEASE LET US KNOW. If you are for some reason unhappy with your partner(s), PLEASE LET US KNOW. If you wish to change your partner because you cannot form a working relationship with them for the duration of the bang, PLEASE EXPLICITLY LET US KNOW (this one is particularly helpful at the start of the project when it's easier to move people around as necessary). We assume that everyone who is taking part in the bang is mature enough to be able to communicate with their partner, or notify us in a timely manner if things are not going according to plan, so we can work on a viable solution together.

Ability to talk to a mod of someone's choosing: this has always been the case, the list of mods is available to view on the rules page, as well as clearly visible on discord! You can DM any member of the mod team at any given time, although a reply might come some time later due to time zone differences.

We will continue to allow everyone to join the KBB, regardless of their previous involvement in the fandom, the KBB itself, and whether they have finished all their previous works for all other projects they have participated in or not.

We will aim to open beta sign ups at the start of the bang, so there will be a bigger beta pool from the beginning and hopefully we will be able to pair up anyone who will need a beta with one. However, we urge people to look for their own betas where possible, as it is not guaranteed that we will be able to provide one for the project, considering how many participants there are.

We will try to make more use of the discord server for posting announcements and reminders as well as posting more on both the tumblr and twitter throughout the bang. Unfortunately 2020 hit us all hard and we didn’t get to do things such as Tips & Tricks and Participant Profiles like we usually do.

For KBB 2021 we will require artists and authors to exchange emails. In previous bangs we’ve allowed people to opt-out of this and use alternate contact methods. This year primary point of contact will be through email and once people are paired up partners can choose how they want to keep in touch moving forward.

Kylux Big Bang 2019 and survey results!

We’re here with a couple of updates.

We got the results from the feedback survey, a big thank you to everyone who participated! The full response to your feedback is under the cut (as there is quite a lot of stuff to address), here is the tldr excerpt:

Ratio of artwork to wordcount: just right

Time-frame to complete works: just right, 2019 KBB will have similar time-frame, with all posting windows closing BEFORE episode IX hits theatres

Check-ins: were useful and will be included in 2019 KBB

Pairing process: went well

Type of bang for 2019: REVERSE, woohoo :D

New mods: we have them! We've had a couple of people volunteer to help us mod the 2019 KBB, more than we expected! Thank you all so much for your interest, we really appreciate it. We would like to announce that @artyaourter, @why-so-mischievous, @threewinterssnow and @verybadhedgehog will be joining our team this year to help with the hard work of running the bang :)

Everyone, regardless of previous involvement in the fandom and their skill level, is welcome to participate in the Kylux Big Bang!  We look forward to many of you signing up for the 2019 KBB :)

Everyone thought the ratio of artwork to wordcount was just right (100%), and the majority of people (74%) thought the time-frame to complete the works was also just about right, with most people (80%) finishing their projects by the end of the event and being satisfied or highly satisfied with the KBB. Due to episode IX hitting the theatres in December this year, we will aim to have all posting windows finished before that happens to avoid any possible changes in people's thoughts about their involvement in fandom. This should put us at a time-frame similar to last year's event.

Nearly everyone (93%) found the check-ins useful, with most people (74%) having found the amount of check-ins to be just about right, and we are sure that folks will be happy to hear that we will keep the check-ins for this year's bang - especially considering that 98% of you would like the next KBB to include check-ins!

The opinions on the type of bang you would like to see ended up pretty evenly split (reverse 51,9%, regular 48,1%), and we have taken into account the fact that the previous bangs operated on a switch basis: a regular bang followed by a reverse, followed by a regular. We are happy to announce that this year's event will be a REVERSE bang, following the regular bang from last year :)

Now we would like to address the comments made about the pairing process: we were happy to hear that everyone who voiced their opinions thought it worked well! There was a comment about knowing time zones in advance, but we are not sure what that related to. Everyone has a couple of days to vote on their preferred stories, and people have a few days to contact their partners as well - time zones have no impact on the pairing process. If anyone would like any clarification on that, please feel free to contact us.

We got a lot of varied comments for last year's bang, most of them highly positive and encouraging - thank you guys, KBB wouldn't have been possible without all of you amazing creators! To address some of the concerns and queries that were raised:

PARTICIPANTS GETTING PAID: artists and writers will NOT get paid for participating in a FREE FOR ALL fandom event. KBB is here to bring us together and have fun, we are all doing it for free in our spare time, and if you think you should get paid for your work please consider doing commissions instead of signing up for the KBB.

CHASING AFTER LATE CHECK-INS, LATE SUBMISSIONS, PARTNER DROP OUTS: the mods have lives outside of the bang, and, as stated above, none of us are getting paid to do this, so please understand that we won't keep chasing after everyone if they do not communicate with us and don't actively want to participate in the bang. We assume that everyone who is taking part in the bang is mature enough to be able to communicate with their partner, or notify us in a timely manner if things are not going according to plan so we can work on a viable solution together. If your partner drops out and you decide to drop out as well it IS easier for us than looking for a pinch hitter, but if you wish for us to find a replacement partner for you we will do our best to do so (and everyone who requested a pinch hitter last year had a new partner assigned to them!).

In terms of comments and requests for the 2019 KBB, here are our thoughts:

KBB DISCORD: we will NOT create a KBB discord due to its poor performance back in 2017, but we will try really hard this year to hold regular, monthly chats for everyone to get to know other participants and get hyped about the KBB - just like we did back in 2016!

MONITORING PEOPLE'S WORK: this is literally what the check-ins are for. This is what we are doing to prevent people from not getting their required part for the bang done. If your partner fails to reply to you, or consistently fails to contribute their part for the check-ins, please contact the mods so we can see what's going on and sort out a pinch hitter if necessary.

ALLOWING ONLY PEOPLE WITH ACTIVE BLOGS/FINISHED WORKS ON AO3 TO PARTICIPATE: everyone is welcome to take part, and we will NOT be running any background checks on anyone. No one has to prove that they like Kylux. If you sign up for the bang we assume that you want to be involved with the fandom and want to create new content for it, no matter if you've been here since 2015 or yesterday, or if you've written fic or drawn fanart before joining. Everyone, regardless of previous involvement in the fandom and their skill level, is welcome to participate in the Kylux Big Bang :)
