I would like to acknowledge that this portfolio is a cumulation of experiences learned on the unceded traditional territory of the Semiahmoo, Katzie, Kwikwetlem, Kwantlen, Qayqayt and Tsawwassen First Nations. Going forward, I hope to use these experiences as an opportunity for allyship towards the Indigenous peoples and to further my own education when it comes to the injustices they still continue to face.

Canada is not only a popular tourist destination but also an attractive study abroad destination. Canada is highly developed with an excellent education system and valuable degrees. This is the reason why many parents want to enroll their children in Canadian primary and secondary schools, and many adults choose to begin their university and graduate studies there. Students must obtain a study visa and study permit for that.
Canada is one of the best countries for international students, with world-class institutes and vibrant, multinational student communities. If you want to study in Canada- one of the first things you will need is a Canadian study permit. A study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutes in Canada. Proof of Identity: A valid passport or travel document with two passport-size photos is required for proof of identity.
Proof of Financial support: This is the most important document as it proves that you’ve got enough money to support yourself or any family members while in Canada. This includes a student's bank statement or an official letter from the sponsor.
Letter of explanation: This is like your personal statement that would help the visa officers to understand why you want to study in Canada and also that you understand all the responsibilities as a student.

ugh tumblr ate most of my sources. very cool. here are some relevant articles:
been closely following stories about my university's rogue student council, which seems intent on enacting baby's first fascism. truly fascinating and infuriating stuff
first major issue i was aware of is that the president was removed from the national student union alliance for being a sex pest. he is no longer the president, though i'm having trouble figuring out whether he resigned or was fired. either way, the union subsequently left the association completely. i distinctly remember an incident where issues of the student magazine reporting on this, normally set out for free throughout the school, were found thrown in the trash, but i can't seem to find the article mentioning that right now
earlier this month, some of their stooges used a fraudulent petition to try to get the student journalism society dissolved and allow for council members to be put on the oversight board
former president sex pest enjoyed personally harassing the queer student society and gave club leadership the runaround when they asked for basic things. based on what I've heard from club leaders, things haven't improved much on that front. he also appointed one of his friends to executive director. this pissed off their lawyer so much he quit. and that guy is still executive director btw.
they get paid an absurd amount of money, on average literally about as much as I make full time working in tech, and as of a few days ago, the vice president makes $9k(!) a semester. once they spent $7k on airpods for themselves. the last stipend increase was apparently illegal but afaik they never actually reversed it
I don't have a source for this, but i have heard students were intimidated into leaving the last general meeting.
for the next general meeting, they are proposing throwing out all their bylaws and replacing them with the most cartoonishly evil shit imaginable. literally read this i don't even know where to start. it would, among other things, allow them to essentially serve as council for life. as in, they can remain on council even after graduating or otherwise leaving the school
but the other day the general meeting was cancelled by the school itself because they requested eighteen security guards, presumably for intimidation purposes, and this was so egregious the school finally stepped in and said "fix your shit or we aren't letting you hold meetings anymore"
it's like. beyond the pale. and tbh i don't even think most students here know it's happening because there's basically no campus culture here so it's really just people in clubs who have had to interface with this bullshit personally trying to get the word out about it
I'm not making this post to raise awareness or anything since this is relevant to almost no one on this website, but if you like extremely niche drama, the KSA is a goldmine

Who remembers this? GUESS WHO WAS BEHIND IT
A Vancouver student has launched an Internet campaign to create a National Sex Day.
Jonathan Yaniv, a computer science student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, wants to make Aug. 21 a day devoted to the art of love.
The 21-year-old is trying to get at least one million Canadians to join the Facebook event National Sex Day 2008. If he's successful, it will likely be the biggest organized sex event ever. The Facebook group already has more than 130,000 members.
Mr. Yaniv has been preparing his guests by promoting safer sex, even sending out free condoms on request.
March 21 was initially slated to be the first National Sex Day, but it didn't go over well with Christians - it was also Good Friday.

For #IndigenousPeoplesDay, I’m sharing photographs made at the Kwantlen first salmon ceremony I was lucky enough to be invited to last month. First salmon ceremonies differ from tribe to tribe, but all have some themes in common. The salmon chief of the tribe will select a fisher to catch the first salmon of the year. This is an honour, and before entering the river the fisher will undergo a blessing, or purification. Once a fish is caught, it’s brought to shore and carefully prepared, cooked and distributed to the people in a ceremony that is unique to the location and tribe. The head of the fish is pointed upriver to show the salmon’s spirit the way home. The bones are carefully cleaned and returned to the river, where it’s believed the salmon will reconstitute itself and continue its journey. There is an underlying theme of respect for the salmon as a gift, and the hope that by properly respecting the fish the salmon king will continue his benevolence through the coming months of salmon returns, and again the following year. Kwantlen’s ceremony felt particularly urgent at a time we are witnessing restrictions on salmon fishing quotas in British Columbia due to frightening declines of Chinook salmon. Could it be that future such ceremonies will cease to exist? It was humbling to be part of such a powerful cultural event, but I left feeling a mixture of wonder and sadness, as I think about the future for our salmon, who seem stuck between a rock and an exceptionally hard place. Thank you to Chief Marilyn Gabriel and Donna Leon for having me along to this special day. Part of my new project The Last Salmon Run, for @insidenatgeo.  #thelastsalmonrun @natgeo (at Kwantlen First Nation) https://www.instagram.com/p/By-1_sFA_Su/?igshid=1646pep542yh

The Fisherman’s Charm
Anthony Gabriel
from the website: Great blue herons will be keeping watch over Surrey streets late spring in an elegant and bold artwork by Anthony Gabriel. In The Fisherman’s Charm, Gabriel’s design highlights the graceful curves and long neck of the bird as it patiently waits, watches, and seeks calm waters against a bright red sun that represents the Life-Giver and Healer.
Gabriel chose to feature the great blue heron because it is a species known throughout the shared traditional lands of Semiahmoo, Kwantlen, and Katzie territories and can be seen throughout the Fraser Valley. They are known to be good omens for people venturing out to harvest salmon and other fish. Gabriel says, “I wanted these banners to share that same omen with all the people of our shared communities—a design that represents all our Nations and a reminder of the journey we are all on together.”
The design was recommended by a committee of Elders of the Katzie, Kwantlen, and Semiahmoo First Nations.

Vancouver Farmers Market offers online ordering and delivery for local produce
Tumblr media
youtube
Local farmers don’t only need to know how to grow healthy produce, they also need to know how to best get those vegetables onto locals’ dinner plates.
“It’s a real challenge for farmers who do small-scale, sustainable farming to do everything,” said Sarah Clements, manager of the Tsawwassen First Nation Farm School, an urban farming collaboration between the First Nation and the Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s agriculture department. “They have to be business people and growers and have plant knowledge and soil-management skills, and know how to market and sell their produce.”
The farm school sells what it grows at two of the Vancouver Farmers Market’s (VFM) outlets, at the Main Street Station and the one in Mount Pleasant, as well as through boxes of vegetables that it puts together for its regular 150 customers who have pre-paid to pick them up each week between June and October.
A retail element that was missing from its business model was an online and delivery option because it would take more expertise, time and resources than the school has.
“An online market is super-important,” said Clements. That has become more evident during COVID-19 as restrictions and infection fears keep customers from their usual shopping routines.
So the farm school signed up with B.C. Local Root, which offers to sell and deliver goods for the dozens of vendors who normally sell their produce and products at one of six Vancouver summer markets.
Vancouver Farmers Market entered into the partnership with B.C. Local Root to give shoppers a third option to shop at the six summer and two winter markets, said Laura Smit, VFM’s interim executive director.
She said COVID-19 restrictions have cut in-person traffic to the markets by 50 per cent at some of the locations and online ordering was left up to individual vendors, who may or may not offer delivery. B.C. Local Root offers a centralized online system that would allow shoppers to choose items from different vendors in one order.
“It’s the convenience factor, and they’ll deliver it to your door,” she said.
Smit said the service is unique because it allows shoppers to buy exclusively from B.C. producers. There is a delivery fee for orders under $50 for the new service, which started at the start of September. And vendors need to sign up, and so far there are fewer than two dozen vendors from Vancouver markets offering mostly prepared items, such as hummus and jams, said Smit.
BClocalroot.ca also offers more than 400 B.C.-grown-and-made products from 65-plus brands from nine regions in the province, it said in a news release.
Clements said the farm school is hoping B.C. Local Root will be a place to sell winter squash, potatoes and onions during the off-season, and is willing to remain with the platform next season. The farm school appreciates the marketing and sales support it provides for small-scale farmers, and Clements calls it a “great initiative.”
But B.C. Local Root charges producers and processors 30 per cent.
“If we could, we would rather sell the produce ourselves and capture the whole dollar amount,” Clements said.
She said as a non-profit group (any money it makes goes back to the school), the farm school doesn’t have to worry about making certain profit margins, as for-profit groups would have to.
“We’re just kind of experimenting,” Clements said. “That would be great if it grows and takes off. We’re hoping it keeps going.”

There's been a national reckoning on place names and the people they're named after — and some say that conversation should include looking at the name of British Columbia, which refers, in part, to Christopher Columbus.
Robert Jago, a writer and consultant from the Kwantlen First Nation and the Nooksack Tribe, says any association with the Italian explorer, who is widely associated with the beginnings of the violent colonization of the Americas, is problematic.
"I think everyone knows this by now, but Christopher Columbus had some issues. Even in his day, he was seen as incredibly violent, genocidal," Jago told guest host Angela Sterritt on CBC's The Early Edition.
"To name a jurisdiction after this person is, in this day and age, not something we would do."
