#2: What Was I Just Thinking? by Kuwabara Tamotsu

toxic yuri am i right ahaha If you've heard of Kuwabara Tamotsu, its likely from his manga Destroy It All and Love Me in Hell!, an ongoing series popular among some of my edgiest lesbian friends. It's a great manga, and I'll probably end up writing about that manga at some point or another, but that's not what this post is about. Instead, I'm writing about Kuwabara's 2020 oneshot What Was I Just Thinking?, a manga that covers similar themes of love, sex, and violence, but with a different perspective and tone. In it, Makabe, the protagonist, struggles with her violent intrusive thoughts directed towards her friend Hoshizaki. After the latter reveals that she's actually a masochist, the two go back to her apartment and get sadomasochistic. It's a little cute, actually, even if the way it goes down is pretty fucked up on Makabe's part.

Kuwabara Tamotsu seems to really love taking these stressed-out, high-strung characters and giving them super unhealthy - usually violent - release valves. Obviously, there's a little more complexity to this specific situation than just that but it's essentially the core of Makabe's arc. The way we see her thought processes play out over the course of the manga paints this really fascinating picture of a woman who's so terrified of her own desires that when she finally lets them out she has no idea where - or even how - to stop. Classic yuri stuff, really. There are a few different ways you can interpret the dynamics at play outside of that, though. One of the things that for me really adds a layer of nuance to the relationship for me is how intentional Hoshizaki is about drawing certain reactions out of Makabe. There is obviously a huge difference between fucking with someone just to see what they're like when they're upset - which is just obnoxious friend behavior - and smacking the shit out of someone out of nowhere - which is assault - but the underlying motivations of both characters share some similarities, Hoshizaki is just a tad more subtle about it. And then there's that moment near the end, where Hoshizaki starts playing with Makabe's bruised hand in order to see what she looks like when she's in pain. There's a disparity in how much respect for boundaries each character has, and that's an important part of their dynamic, but I really like the way Hoshizaki isn't just a receptacle for Makabe's weird hangups. One might even say she "matches her freak".

There's also the fact that Makabe is a wimp. I think this is an important part of her character - she seems to have a bit of a complex about it, as we can see when she gets all defensive about having played ping pong in school, compared to the more athletic Hoshizaki. The fact that Hoshizaki seems more concerned about her hair being messed up than the bruising all over her face while Makabe's hands hurt so bad she can't even hold a cigarette is still kind of cute, and it makes her desires and motivations feel a lot more real.

Another fact of the matter is that these two women really are in love with each other. There are enough longing glances and flushed cheeks throughout the manga that we can be sure of that, and it's really not, like, normal friend stuff to want to hurt your bestie in order to understand her better. One really would hope that these two don't go on to build a relationship based off what they've established here, but come on. Look at them.

So what I find really interesting about this manga is that it's definitely toxic yuri, but it's presented in such a complex and sympathetic way that it almost makes you want to forget that fact? Like, obviously there's this big overarching layer of straight-up violence on the surface. And once you get to the core of the story it's about two characters nurturing a really unhealthy dynamic that's not going to take them anywhere good. But in between those two levels, there's this real sense of passion and romance and emotion that undercuts what would otherwise just be a total downer of a manga and turns it into something that's actually really cute, even while it maintains this sense of tension and fear and desperation that keeps you from getting too comfortable. It's also just really hot. If that all sounds good to you, you should read this comic (which I'll link below). You should also read Destroy It All and Love Me in Hell!, but more on that eventually. Probably. I'm still kind of figuring out what I want this blog to be, so no promises on anything, but you'll probably be seeing more of me throughout the week. Hope you all have a lovely Tuesday :)

Submitted propaganda: Its genuinely good. Its a genuinely interesting story with excellent character designs and entertaining characters and the horniness is not just a coating of titties for fanservice, but fundamental to the plot. It is about self discovery and learning to accept yourself but not letting your desires consume you. The action is tense. The relationships between characters are interesting. Each character is charming in their own way, from the flop loser MC who is playing villain because she's hard up for magical girls to the magical girl who joined the good team bc the others watched her beat a demon in the head with a brick to the supervillain college dropout who wants to rule the world. There is an overarching mystery concerning why and how these girls gained power to begin with (i do NOT trust that little shit of a mascot). The mood and tone of the story is so masterful-- you can TELL when somethings wrong. There is also some very good comedy all throughout-- it's just a super fun read! They also got their first season of an anime recently (which is somehow hornier than the manga) so.

No-Spoilers Review #9: If That's Love, Break it. (Zenbu Kowashite Jigoku de Aishite)

Content Warnings: SELF-HARM!!! I AM NOT KIDDING!!!, sexual themes, severe parental abuse (thus far psychological), violence and bullying, general dark themes

(And after a series I like that I'd recommend to everybody, here's a series I like that I'd recommend to nearly no one...)

If That's Love, Break it. (or Destroy it All and Love Me in Hell) by Kuwabara Tamotsu is a manga with only one full volume out currently at the time of writing. It's extremely new, and it's yuri so toxic it could poison the groundwater for a hundred years 2ND VOLUME UPDATE: actually not THAT toxic . It's about a "perfect" honor student who is, mentally, at her absolute breaking point due to the sheer pressure. She wants to escape, but she just can't do it--Until a truant with a nasty personality starts to mess with her.

Is it good? W-Well... First of all it's new, so there could be some bad things on the horizon. Second of all it's dark as hell, and let me just point out that big content warning list I wrote up there. I'm weirdly obsessed with it and I like it a lot, but this is absolutely and completely not a work for everybody, or even most people. I also would NOT recommend that minors read this.

Kurumi Yoshizawa (brown hair) is top of the school and the student council president. Unbeknownst to the other students and the teachers, Kurumi is under horrific amounts of pressure mostly from her mother to be literally perfect, and she can't say no to the expectations of teachers either. She resents her circumstances bitterly. After she's asked to check on the truant student Naoi (black hair), she mutters to herself that she "doesn't give a shit" about "some girl who doesn't come to school." Naoi hears this directly passing her on the stairs, and immediately she takes an interest in her.

When Kurumi nearly shoplifts a single eraser thinking it might let her escape ("nearly" because she just pays for it anyway), it turns out Naoi took a recording of it. She starts blackmailing her.

Naoi is a REAL NASTY PIECE OF WORK. She's an evil little shitling, and she punches Kurumi in the solar plexus in Chapter 1. To me, this makes her a fun character to follow and read about, but easily to others she would just be a horrible person, end of story. Because she is. She is a corruptor, who becomes interested in Kurumi just for the sake of tormenting her. However, to Kurumi, Naoi is both her tormentor and her only possible escape, her only rebellion against her life circumstances. She despises her but she also doesn't know what she really wants. To Naoi, she realizes that Kurumi might be the only person who understands her (Naoi's home life isn't good either, and she has a suspicious large scar like a burn mark on one of her arms). This complicated, messy, strange relationship is what really appeals to me. Kurumi has one close friend who genuinely cares deeply about her and is a good, normal person, but Kurumi's just not willing to open up to her even though she wants to help.

Final Thoughts:

As you can imagine from a title that could be translated overly-literally as "DESTROY EVERYTHING, LOVE IN HELL", the writing is pretty over-the-top dark, so some would definitely call this "totally ridiculous" or, possibly, "disrespectful" -- Another reason why I don't think most people would like this series. Again, just because I love freak girls with dogshit personalities in my manga doesn't mean I think everyone is gonna have a good time with it!

And, seriously, check those content warnings.

If you do like it, talk about it with me! I literally can't in good conscience recommend this to any of my usual friends... There's no official English translation, but I'll pick up the first volume if it gets released overseas, assuming nothing crazier than my limits shows up before then.

(For yuris that would kill you on sight like the Elephant's Foot, Murciélago and Cruddy are just WAY too much even for me. I won't be reviewing those.)

UPDATE: We are now 11 chapters in! Instead of like... 3. Suffice to say, basically none of my fears came to fruition, so honestly speaking it's just plain good as long as you mind the content warnings. Good luck Naoi. Good luck Kurumi. And Kokoro.
