As you've all been waiting for, the next installment in the In the Snowfields verse!

For those of you who don't know, In the Snowfields is a Naruto re write where I do my best to "fix" the Canon! I am building the Uzumaki, Hatake, and Uchiha lore currently, as well as building on existing relationships. Please be patient with the first two installments, as I am currently deeply editing them. I promise they will be more in the vain of this one once they're finished!

Featuring Kushina and Minato, the two take a trip to Uzushio on Kushina's birthday and in the process learn more about the Uzushio, each other, and the world around them.

Kushina discovers a side to Minato she never knew.

Minato proves his devotion in one grand act, unmatchable by any other.

Congrats on your follower milestone!!! For the request writing ask, can you write Kakashi with a crush on Obito, asking advice from Minato on how to ask him out? They're both seventeen and graduating from ANBU, and Kakashi doesn't want to let Obito go but can't bring himself to just... ask him out. IDK what advice Minato will have for his student, perhaps he asks Kushina for help since she was the one who asked him out 😂 May I request some kind of happy ending, maybe even a kiss?

Kakashi held the certificate in his hands, looking out on the village as the sun set. He'd been released from ANBU just an hour prior, everyone going their seperate ways to celebrate with friends and family. Obito had returned to the Uchiha section of the village, and Kakashi found himself fighting the twitch in his limbs that was telling him to go find him. He'd had half a mind, earlier, to go and tell Minato or Kushina, but he dropped the thought almost immediately.

He had no family to celebrate with.

So instead, he'd sat on the roof of the hokage's office and contemplated how to go and tell Obito to stay with him. It wasn't an elegant request, the plan was full of holes and Obito could always say no, but Kakashi knew he couldn't survive without his best friend by his side.

"So is there a reason you're out here, Kakashi?" Minato asked. Kakashi startled and nearly fell off the roof at the sudden appearance of his sensei and whirled around. Icy blue eyes met Kakashi's own gray, and the two nin stared at each other quietly. Minato raised his eyebrow.

"Sorry sensei, just thinking." He replied, settling back down on the roof. The yellow flash came to sit beside him, white cape fluttering behind him.

"About?" He prompted, taking the ANBU certificate from Kakashi. "When I graduated from ANBU, I went traveling. Is that what you want to do?"

Kakashi rapidly shook his head. He took off his headband and let his sharingan eye open, just slightly, before he closed it once again. Even just opening it for a second drained his chakra, but he didn't open it for the sharingan abilities. The same person that had given him the sharingan was the reason that Kakashi wouldn't travel.

"Obito is coming by later. I asked him what he wanted to do the other day, and he said he'd want to become a genin sensei. He'd practically be benched if that happened, and I can only imagine how often you two would be able to see each other after that."

Kakashi cursed his sly sensei. Minato was looking down at Kakashi's certificate with hooded eyes, and the Hatake noted the distinct drop in temperature in the air around him. Minato was teasing him, the damn sadist that he was.

"I don't want to leave him. I don't want him to leave me." Kakashi said eventually, snatching his certificate back. Kakashi couldn't imagine a life without Obito. Couldn't imagine not having his warm back at his own, snoring away. He couldn't imagine going out to eat Ramen and not having Obito there to crash his lunch and make him pay. He couldn't imagine going on a mission and having his twin sharingan working in tandem with him.

"What a coincidence, then. Obito had told me the same thing." Minato said airily. "Now Kakashi, I'll give you an ultimatum, because I know you would just torture yourself otherwise."

Kakashi looked curiously at his sensei, trying to study Minato's face- it was pointless. Minato Namikaze was impossible to read, especially when he was in such a mood as this.

"If you don't tell Obito your feelings before he enters my office..." Minato began, and Kakashi's breath came out in a puff. Minato must have been feeling especially sadistic, and dread build up in Kakashi's heart as he guessed to what Minato's condition would be.

"I'll take Obito for myself."

Minato's icy blues glowed in the setting sun, and Kakashi could see the hint of fang on his sensei's manic smile. He didn't need to be told twice.

He found Obito in less than a minute, walking up to the Hokage's office from the Uchiha section. Kakashi didn't give his friend any time to get a word in.

"Move in with me." He blurted, grabbing Obito by the shoulders. His friend's one visible eye flitted all over Kakashi's face, and then he laughed. Kakashi loved that laugh.

"Good one Kakashi. Come on, let's go tell Minato-sensei the news." Was all Obito said, trying to move past Kakashi. Obito meeting with Minato was the last thing that could happen. Kakashi knew that if he let Obito go now, he'd be Minato's little beauty before the sun set, and that couldn't happen.

"I'm serious!" He insisted. "There's an apartment near the academy that's really cheap and it has more than enough room for the both of us. I'll buy groceries, you cook, I'll clean on odd days you clean on evens. Just... just do it!"

Kakashi's voice nearly broke at the last sentence, and he was aware thay he sounded like a pouting child, but he could see in Obito's face how the Uchiha was slowly coming around to the idea.

"What, do you want to marry me or something?" Obito mocked. Kakashi's heart almost stopped beating.

Yes.

Yes.

"Yes."

Obito's eye blew wide. The two freshly graduated ANBU stared at each other like that, but then someone cleared their throat behind them.

"You were coming to see me, Obito?" Minato asked, ignoring Kakashi completely. The white haired ninja's heart was rabitting a mile a minute, and he waited with baited breath for Obito to respond.

"Oh yes, I have some good news." Obtio said, managing to recover his composure. He took Kakashi's hand in his own, and held them up for Minato to see.

"I have a boyfriend."

"That was a little mean of you, Minato." Kushina said, sitting in the windowsill of the Hokage office.

"Perhaps." Minato replied. "I thought you'd be more jealous than concerned for my treatment of our little genin."

Kushina only rolled her eyes. "They're not genin anymore. And why would I be jealous? That bite mark on your ass is from a kitsune, not a bake-neko."

Minato chuckled quietly. "Yes, I suppose I am marked. What a shame that this prominent bite mark on my posterior scares away potential suitors."

They both sat in silence for a moment before breaking out in giggles.

His wife is unbelievably cute, even when exerting authority. He is obedient, truly, but it’s hard not to simply stare at her in her sweet pink lace, especially as she ties him up, white teeth digging into her bottom lip.

It’s even harder to stop staring when that lace comes off and she teases him with sweetly naughty promises and even sweeter kisses. Her milky skin is luminous in the afternoon light, warmed by the sunshine streaming in from the high window. Unfortunately it also makes him want to touch, and the desire to touch makes him forget that silk scarves are little match for shinobi strength.

No match at all when she wiggles in his lap, teasing rosy nipples just above his lips. Just enough to make restraint that much more difficult.

He’s not quite sure whether the game is truly bondage, or one that consists of wrestling with his own self control. Judging from his wife’s mischievous smirk, he’s certain it’s the latter.

“Mina-kun, don’t you tear my scarves - I happen to like them!” Kushina huffs dramatically, poking a finger against his chest.

He can’t help it. He laughs. “Well Mistress-mine, perhaps you should use your chakra chains instead. Then I would be no match for your bonds!”

Tossing a fall of scarlet hair over her shoulder, Kushina swats his thigh, unable to keep a straight face, and clearly grasping for a diversionary tactic. Her flushed cheeks and dancing eyes give testament to just how close she is to dissolving into a fit of giggles herself. 

“Only you would think of jutsu right now, nerd. I’m just gonna have to double up on the scarves, I see. Quit trying to distract me, you’re supposed to be obeying me, Mina-kun.”

Another wicked grind against a very interested part of his anatomy has him considering whether bargaining is an option. Her little silky panties hardly cover a thing… If he’s distracting her, then she must be aware that she’s got him under her spell entirely.

“I promise to be good, sweet Mistress of my heart. Ah, I suppose chakra wouldn’t be so effective anyway...” 

The words that want to escape are at a level of cheese even worse than those of his Sensei’s novels, but once he starts he can’t stop.

“...since I’m already bound in the chains of your love.” Minato blurts. 

He can feel his cheeks flame crimson the moment the statement is said aloud. Yeah, real smooth, Yondaime.

Kushina freezes in place, blue eyes incredulous. Her face slowly assumes a color that is just as beet red as her husband’s, before she cracks up and smothers him in kisses.

He’s going to owe her new scarves before the day is over, but that’s a small price to pay for such joy.

MinaKushi fluff headcanons

Ano... fluff? I'm not good at processing fluffy romance mate, but I'll give it a whirl. Please note, they are based off my readings [and badgering himekushinada for their approvals], ne? You're free to have your own headcanons. I don’t mean to impose on any writer around here.

- Kushina is the only person Minato has an entire list of nicknames for. He will rarely use them in public though. Most of the time, said nickname will involve food and at least three adjectives [it drives Kushina up the wall and he loves it].

- Minato forgets things on purpose. Kushina's messy little scribbled reminders are adorable and he will forever deny collecting them.

- As best friends turned hostages bound in matrimony, they still manage to argue over the silliest things [which Kushina usually wins]. They're also very competitive and will have miniature contests that range from balancing a waribashi on an elbow to a violent round of Jenken. Loser gets to do the dishes [Usually Minato. Damn those Uzumaki genes of good fortune].

- Minato is the worrywart of the two, and will hover around like a concerned penguin unless Kushina elbows him in the ribs to quit it already.

- Kushina is fluent in flake-speak and they have their own little set of field signs to communicate when there are other people in the room. She's the only one who can ruin his perfect poker face during Jōnin meetings [Shikaku has had it with these two].

- Pillow fights. So many pillow fights. [Ano, the lovley Koko drew something along similar lines and I did stumble upon it later - both are unrelated but the picture is so, so good that I need to link it here. So much better than what I had imagined!]

- Minato is a snuggler. He can't help it, since he is paranoid and all [also, Kushina makes a nice pillow]. Kushina is an early riser, and usually has to poke him awake so she can get out of bed. All she gets in return is half open lids and a lazy, dopey grin before he conks out again. Needless to say, he is annoying.

- Minato isn't the best at cooking. He only knows the basics. That doesn't stop him from making Kushina's favourite ramen [it's the only thing he knows how to cook really well, to be honest].

- They divide the chores. At least, they try to. Minato is still the Yondaime, and Kushina an active Jōnin so most of the times he gets stuck with cleaning duty while Kushina takes care of the cooking part. Occasionally, when they are too tired to do either, the duo can be found slumped in a fuzzy lump on the couch, embroiled in a half hearted tiff over what takeout to get. Usually ends with one of them dragging their feet to the kitchen to get instant cup noodles.

- Since they've been together from before Minato became Yondaime, he has a penchant for bringing Kushina souvenirs from his missions/diplomatic visits. With his... questionable aesthetic sense, you can imagine where said souvenirs end up. [their garden is full of little trinkets] The only thing Kushina actively uses is the hair ornaments - and that too during special occasions. 

- Minato, as much of a light sleeper [read: paranoid] as he is, is prone to waking up in the middle of the night to Kushina constantly mumbling about something. It can range from ‘ramen stealing rabbits’ to ‘useless kitsune in need of a bath’. This is usually accompanied with the occasional elbow to his side or her tugging his hair. He doesn't mind of course. It's an Uzumaki thing, right?

- Kushina is the only one, apart from Jiraiya, who has had the misfortune of being subjected to Minato's jutsu-blabber. He will go on, and on, and on. His record so far? 4 hours. [cue a chibi version of Jiraiya sensei flashing a 'He's your problem now' placard at Kushina while Gai’s sunset no jutsu plays in the background]

- Minato is surprisingly talented at baking and Kushina is the best taste tester [if by taste testing = eats half the thing he made and forces Kakashi to eat the other half because he's so scrawny].

- Surprisingly enough, they happen to be pretty silent together. Words aren't needed when you can read each other with a mere glance and that's how they like to spend the free time they get. Savouring each other's company.

I love your headcanon about Mikoto and Kushina so much, especially your headcanon about Mikito because you make her a flawed but three dimensional person and it is so much more interesting than "sweet mom and wife". And god, I love Fugaku because of you.

Thank you so much!! Convincing folks to like characters based on my contrived headcanons makes me super happy..! I like making pieces fit and make sense, and Fugaku’s attitude in canon was always kinda weird (though ofc we were getting Sasuke’s biased perspective so there’s that), and I wanted to make his backstory explain his behaviour while still keeping him sympathetic and human, and I’m glad I succeeded :)

Oh, ABSOLUTELY. Kushina totally falls in love with Minato and it’s very mutual, and they make a wonderful, happy couple together. Kushina is bisexual/biromantic in my headcanon, and Minato is demisexual/demiromantic :)

In my Five comic I made Kushina two years older than Minato, so they were only briefly introduced during Minato’s academy days when Kushina was brought from Whirlpool as a little kid. She quickly graduated (being older than most kids there) and they didn’t really meet again until Minato made chunin (he was promoted to Research & Development, so early in his career he was less a fighter shinobi and more an intelligence gathering, jutsu-creating and fuuinjutsu-studying ninja. All that changed with the third war :V but that’s a story for another day).

In canon, during their academy days, Minato appeared to quietly admire Kushina’s outspokenness and fierce attitude from afar but respected her enough to let her fight her own battles against bullies, and stayed away almost because he didn’t want to seem patronizing? This kind of attitude is kinda Hinata-like in its shyness, and mature in its reasoning, but at once, almost emotionally dense? XD;; Minato didn’t realize Kushina could have really used a friend at the time…and Kushina, for her part, didn’t really notice him in light of her own social difficulties.

I headcanon Minato continued to quietly admire Kushina (her attitude, her background, and the details of the seal holding the Nine Tailed Fox), but finally got an opportunity to interact with her more on an assignment from Research & Development, since Kushina is from the land of Whirlpools and remembers bits and pieces of fuuinjutsu, which is valuable to Konoha. He’s assigned to work with her to reverse engineer a lot of Whirlpool’s jutsu and fuuinjutsu (since Kushina knows how to write and/or cast them, but not how they work), and that’s how they start hanging out more regularly.

At the time, Kushina is heavily depressed because Mikoto had just broken up with her and they’d both kind of decided to stay away from each other for a while, and Kushina pretty much had no friends beyond Mikoto, so she was too embroiled in her own emotional turmoil to really notice the young, quiet and girly-looking Chunin assigned to ask her questions about her jutsu. She actually mistakes him for a girl at first, because he’s so soft spoken and pretty, and Minato doesn’t correct her on it – she catches on soon enough and apologizes fretfully, but Minato doesn’t mind, he’s always known he’s more demure and girly and in another world he’d be happily nonbinary.

But then Minato’s enthusiasm for jutsu and his passion for fuuinjutsu reignites Kushina’s interest in her own knowledge, in her own country, in her own past! and they work quite well together. They can talk for aaaages about this kinda stuff, and it’s super fun and stimulating, especially for Kushina who was rarely ever appreciated for her brains over her brawn. She gets to show off that she’s a smarty, too, and it makes her really proud and thrilled.

And so Minato becomes Kushina’s newest and second friend. Their relationship is at first very professional, and Minato – Jiraiya constantly bemoans this – is quite dense when it comes to relationship stuff. He’s demisexual and demiromantic, and up until this point, Minato (who is only 15) has not really cared about relationships. He’s more into books, and history, and how to operationally define a chakra contract. But slowly, he realizes he actually cares a lot about Kushina. Still, his reserved and respectful side keep him from saying it (and he’s under the mistaken assumption that Kushina is a lesbian, because everyone and their mom knows she was going out with the beautiful Mikoto for two years), so he just keeps it to himself, just enjoying that he feels happy around her and leaving it at that.

Kushina herself is in DEEP DENIAL because she still loves Mikoto, and is still hurting from that heartbreak, and everyone keeps asking if she’s going out with that girly chunin and she’s SO! TOTALLY! NOT!!! Y’know?!

And then Kushina gets kidnapped -spoilers? lmfao- and Minato is on the team that rescues her, and she realizes. Damn. I really do care for this guy. And she’s the one to confess to him :D Minato is stunned, and then he smiles, and his heart rearranges itself and it clicks in his mind that “yeah, I’d love to spend the rest of my life with this woman”, and his demi heart understands he’s in love with her and likely always will be, and that’s that.

And so they start going out!!! And it’s super sappy and cute. Minato really enjoys that he can pursue his feminine side without Kushina looking down on him – he loves to cook, and sew, and has an eye for calligraphy – and Kushina really digs how girly he looks lmao, and at the same time appreciates how mature and supportive he is, and how he admires her even when she’s explosive and ADHD and a mess. They’re one of those rare couples that genuinely and wholeheartedly admire each other’s strengths and flaws and try to make each other better people.

They are also a very, very powerful duo. Never forget that they are weapons of mass destruction, and pretty much everyone outside of Konoha has “FLEE ON SIGHT” stamped over their bingo book faces. War makes beasts out of everyone. Minato’s journey of discovery re: how the Konoha machine operates and his slow but steady indoctrination into the Hokage/Shadow Hokage mentality is a tragedy for another day…

But, everything laid bare, Minato and Kushina loved each other genuinely and deeply and were so, so happy to have Naruto as their son. They were a good match :)
