Right About Now

Kurt Elling

The story of SuperBlue, as best as I've gleened is Kurt Elling had moved back to Chicago after years in New York just before the COVID shutdowns began. He wasn't adjusting to it well. His old friend Charlie Hunter told Elling to keep the music going.

Hunter collaborated with two talented young musicians in a Jazz quintet based in Richmond, VA called Butcher Brown, drummer Corey Fonville and DJ Harrison. Hunter, Fonville and Harrison laid some tracks together working online. Hunter sent tracks to Elling who recognized how wonderful they where, but asked his old friend, "Where are the melodies?" Hunter responded, "That's for you to figure out."

The first album put out in 2021 was Superblue and the new release is Superblue: The Iridescent Spree. Here's Elling's Website. I really have enjoyed listening to songs on the albums. What I discovered today is Elling has been touring with Hunter and some really great musicians sitting in DJ Harrison's and Corey Fonville's seats.

This morning I was ten minutes late for work because I started watching a recent performance at Bimhuis from November the sixth with Julius Rodriguez and Marcus Finnie. I watched the show tonight and it made me feel really good. Very entertaining. Really so much fun!

AYYYY I'm back in my jazzfucker era

Kurt Elling is playing in Menasha in September and I got tickets and they're up at the front!! The first time we saw him was in Green Bay when I was in college and we were first or second row. I'm so excited (especially since the last concert I was supposed to go to fell through bc of a blizzard)

She's an illustrator, vis dev, and background artist / painter

known for her online presence in deviant art, youtube and tumblr

Worked on Disenchantment as a background painter, as a bg painter, Kurts would figure out colour schemes for different backgrounds

She loves to tell a story through her illustrations as someone with an animation background

Uses photoshop, but is learning procreate and clip studio paint

When thinking of ideas, Kurts would do lots of thumbnail sketches

Uses big flat brushes to block down values, then goes in with details after

likes to mix fantasy elements in everyday settings

Background art is like creating a stage and the character is the actor

Use different shapes to create contrast

Create a foreground, a middle ground and a background to create depth

Telling a story through colour is important

Envisioning scenes with effects greatly aids with post production

It's best to choose single type location when starting out background art, like a kitchen, a bedroom, a lake etc.

limit the colour pallet to play with values

Break down the scene in shapes

Block in the biggest colours, make them muted and add contrast after

Use shadows and light to direct the viewers eyes to the focal point

Add a character to check the composition.

The BAU on vacation:

EMILY: By day, she sleeps by the pool in the sun reading Kurt Vonnegut books, cocktail in hand, and by night, she goes out, ‘sin to win’ style, thoroughly hungover the next day. Nobody knows where she goes or what she does, but it always seems like she’s had a crazy night.

REID & GIDEON: have a full itinerary planned exploring the best museums and most niche historical destinations. Reid acts as a tour guide and all around information repository. Both brought speedos, yet neither of them get in the pool or the ocean.

JJ & GARCIA: Undisputed karaoke queens. They are the first to arrive and last to leave at the karaoke bar each night, and come back to the hotel covered in glitter and boa feathers. Garcia is a nuisance at the front desk as she keeps getting logged out of the hotel WiFi.

HOTCH: Spends most of the vacation on the phone to his higher-ups at the FBI. He looks very official, sitting pin-straight on a deck chair, shades on, expression serious. Workers at the hotel keep offering to book him in with the masseuse, which he rejects—he looks like he could use it.

ELLE & MORGAN: gorgeous people flock to them as they sunbathe at the hotel’s poolside bar. They always enter the nightclubs together, but they always leave separately—and never alone…

BONUS: Spencer is a walking sunblock dispenser, yet Emily still gets sunburn—though she’d never admit it—as she claims she ‘doesn’t need it’. Morgan recounts his one night stands to Spencer, who just looks terribly confused and stares at Morgan in puzzlement as he gives him advice on flirting and smooth pick-up lines. JJ and Emily nurse their hangovers together at the hotel breakfast buffet, sitting together with their shades on and silently passing the coffee pot between them.
