Rewatching Kuroko no Basket in english dub because I want to be able to do other things while watching. And I was going to post a whole rant about Kise not calling Kuroko "Kurokocchi" when they first meet again, and not before the practice match or in the beginning of the practice match, but then suddenly when they are tied during the practice game he does call him Kurokocchi. And like it is not a story thing or something, cause the subtitles (we dont say anything about me watching dub with english subs, english is not my first language and I get distracted sometimes and the whole "I cant hear without reading it" is a bit to true sometimes) do have him say "Kurokocchi" before the practice match. So I am so confused why the dub script has this..

I'd rather have one Snorlax than the whole world - Murasakibara Atsushi x Reader
tagging @true-deru and @alienaiver for the Pokemon theme even though I don't know if you know this Anime
Tumblr media
“What kind of Pokemon would you be?” Kise asks just as you all sit down to eat.
“What kind of stupid ass question is that?” Aomine asks back.
“You’re just angry because you’d be something stupid like Electrode,” Kise snarks.
“Quiet, Jigglypuff,” you tell him off, swatting at Atsushi’s hand when he goes for your dessert.
“But it’s Matcha Flavored,” he whines, “You don’t even like that.”
“Still. You’ve got to ask.”
“Can I have your dessert-”
“I am NOT Jigglypuff,” Kise cries, interrupting Atsushi.
“The iffy one? For sure.” Aomine snorts, getting out of the way when a book comes flying, smacking Kise in the head.
“What was that for?” Kise wails, rubbing his reddening cheek.
“You interrupted me,” Atsushi points out, voice dripping with annoyance before he turns to you again. “Can I have your dessert please?”
You sigh. “You didn’t have to hit him for that. Sure you can.”
“Yay,” he wiggles around a bit on the bench, knocking his hip into yours. “You can have my veggies.”
“Forget it, they’re for you to eat.”
-
“I’m telling you, Kurokocchi, you’d totally be a Squirtle. Your hair has the perfect color for it.”
“I am not sure-”
“And… and Midorimacchi is Turtwig. Green color and they both look kinda constipated.”
“Excuse me?!”
With a sigh, Atsushi’s head drops onto yours.
“Tired?” You ask, rolling your shoulders back a little.
“They’re still at it,” he mumbles. “What’s so interesting about Pokemon?”
“Well, they all have some kind of character. It’s fun to compare.”
He’s quiet for a while.
“What Pokemon would I be?” His voice is so low, you barely catch it.
“I’ll tell you when we get out of here,” you promise, not wanting Kise to overhear.
Atsushi huffs and sits beside you, pretending to look into the book you’re reading. Soon enough though, his head sinks onto your shoulder and his breathing evens out.
You let him sleep, even though it’s a little uncomfortable. After all, they have only so few breaks in between Class and Training.
-
Somewhere in front, Kise’s still discussing Pokemon choices, unable to find one that fits Akashi well enough to present it.
Satsuki’s hanging off Kuroko’s arm, asking him what kind of Pokemon he thinks she’d be most like.
It’s still warm out, the approaching fall season not yet strong enough to fight the last remnants of summer. Still, Atsushi’s warm hand feels nice, wrapped around yours.
It’s not that you haven’t told anyone that you’re dating yet.
It’s just that no one thought to ask.
You’re pretty sure that both Kise and Aomine have no clue. After all, Atsushi is neither less nor more affectionate toward you than he was before.
Midorima would blow a fuse if he knew, so whatever he’s thinking about all the time, it’s not the relationship status of his friends.
Satsuki has only eyes for Kuroko and Kuroko, well… He knows. He knows for sure.
But just like Akashi, he knows when to stay quiet about a topic, choosing to let it play out the way it wants to, smiling knowingly whenever Atsushi drapes himself over you.
“Okay guys, Satsuki, we’re leaving.” You call after them, motioning at the turn in the road that leads you home. “See you tomorrow!”
“See you!” Satsuki waves her hand exaggeratedly. “Let me do your hair tomorrow, okay?”
“We’ll see!” You tell her, which translates to a “Nowhere in hell” but she laughs and nods and runs after the others.
-
Atsushi’s quiet as you walk the rest of your way home, his thumb drawing odd shapes into the back of your hand.
“What’s on your mind?” You ask when your house comes into view, knowing full well he’s going to crash there first, taking a quick nap before entering the madness that is his own home - five children with equally large appetites do not create a peaceful atmosphere.
“I was thinking about what Pokemon you would be.”
“Oh?” You turn, curious.
“I don’t know,” he admits. “The only one I know is Pikachu but you’re cuter.”
“Aww, that’s so sweet.” You coo, pulling your joined hands up as if to kiss it before biting into his. “I could eat you up.”
He laughs, the sound rumbling through him.
“You’re so weird.”
“You love it.”
“I do.”
You smile up at him at that, pulling him up the stairs to your bedroom.
“You know what Pokemon you are?” You ask, managing to fluff up one pillow before he drops onto them like dead weight.
“What?”
“Snorlax.” You grin, flopping down on top of him.
“Because Snorlax is big and lazy and cuddly and sweet and he likes to eat and sleep and do nothing all day.”
“Hmmm…” Atsushi pulls you in, hooking his head over your shoulder. “What a life.”

kise ask PART 2. it then made me happy to see him here getting to team up with kuroko again as well as get to know kagami better and just like. play in a team again!! enjoy ball!! Idk just . The way he looks at Kuroko in all these panels.... he missed him 😭😭😭😭
YAY KISE ASK TWO!! hi again angel beloved :-)
!!! yes!!! i remember watching the street ball scene in the anime and seeing kagami passing to kise and them all playing together and its just soo :') yeah <33. and they all look like they're having so much fun!!! it's not in the manga, but the anime includes shots of them and smiling as they play :-)) <3!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also, kagami and kise look so cute standing next to each other in the manga!! they're one of my favorite duos!! i love kise's easy-going smile, esp paired with taiga's stressed out look dfjksdfj :-)
kuroko's "how nice for you" in response to kagami getting kise's honorific, and it being something along the lines of "it's a huge honor" in the dub anime is so :-)) i really love that kuroko remembers and takes kise's handmade honorific seriously, doesn't dismiss it or anything, and encourages kagami to do the same
OH!!! what did you think of the moment right before that, where kise watches kuroko and kagami banter, and he has a quiet, lonesome little smile before deciding to leave and saying goodbye? i think it's intention is better portrayed in it's animated form, partly because it's a little easy to look over in the manga since it's such a small moment. it's such an interesting scene to me!!!
Tumblr media
in the manga, as your attached panels show, kise is physically portrayed as an outsider looking in on kagami and kuroko's banter. kagami scolds kuroko for not looking after himself, and is just all-around a sweetheart, caring friend. kise watches. theres a clear and intentional separation between kagakuro and kise, both in the way the panel is drawn, and in the conversation between kagami/kuroko that doesn't include and isn't about kise
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he has this moment of observation, quiet realization, and a forehead/eye shadow appears on his face as he listens to and watches kagakuro banter. in the anime, the effect is portrayed with his hair just covering his eyes. i think the manga's forehead shadow comes across as darker and more intentional. in the anime it comes across as more wistful and quietly lonely to me.
kise leaves just a very few moments into this conversation. this scene is kinda what made me start writing a previous post about kise's masks, and how he tends to walk away from sincerity and genuine connection.
kise is an outsider looking in, watching an interaction between two people who clearly know each other well and care about each other a lot (and not just any people ofc, but one of them being kise's old friend, who he misses like u said!). and upon seeing this, he doesn't try to add to the conversation, or get to know kagami further, or reconnect with kuroko. he walks away.
idk!!!! i wonder why he does. is it a flee from honesty and deeper connection in classic kise-fashion, or is it a simple realization that he doesn't quite fit into this space and moment and choice to walk away from it? an acceptance of the space between him and kuroko (esp since just a few panels ago he was genuinely asking why kuroko disappeared after middle school)?
i also think its a refelction of kise's masks and insincerity mixed with sincerity and just his general complexity because of the smile he gives kagakuro as he's leaving, and the observing kuroko when kise leaves. the anime does a really lovely job at this scene, and in the manga fujimaki gives kise a full panel with no background; the focus is fully on kise and his closed-eyes smile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
even kise's parting words here "i was even able to play with kurokocchi in the end" have a certain sense of goodbye and finalization and letting go, a quiet acceptance. i also wonder about the intention behind making kise kinda "memorialized” in the anime shot; the screen still and the colors unrealistically glowing, kise's features blotchy and scratched over.
kuroko watches him leave. he seems to read that there is something that kise is not saying. i am really curious if that was intentional on fujimaki's part.
ANYWHO!!!! thank you so much for sharing these manga panels with me!!!! i hope i didnt take it too off topic!!!!

random thought : gom cuddle pile
kise imo is big on casual touch so during teiko he’s the one who initiates it - packing up after practice with kurokocchi and his thanks is a tackle hug that sends them sprawling. aomine’s always down to wrestle bcuz he has no siblings, so he piles on next. mura is all ‘ooh, something to lay on while i snack’ abt it. akashi is hesitant to join - mido is entirely against it. mura offers akashi some of his snack so he joins. mido, like the prissy little king he is, sits on top of the pile. yes satsuki & niji are taking pics like parents
post-canon it’d probly be actual cuddling, less dogpiling the unlucky two who got stuck on the bottom. & now they have to fit kagami in too. still starts with kise and kuroko but now kuroko’s sandwiched btwn kise and kagami. it grows to look like they’ve all fallen against each other like dominoes. kagami is deathly worried about how much weight his couch can hold w/ a bunch of too-big teenage boys on it
& yes, satsuki is still taking pictures

When Kagami moves back to L.A, all the ✨miracles✨, separately, ask Kuroko to transfer schools: “It’s not good for you to be alone, Kurokocchi”, Kise says one day, after a photoshoot. “Well, you need a light again. Who would be better for the job than me?” Aomine smirks, in a street court at night. “Akita is gonna be so lonely after Muro-chin graduates”, Atsushi complains during a videocall. “You would be of great value for the team”, Midorima lies, standing outside Seirin, holding an orange. “HE JUST WANTS YOU TO BE HIS TEAMMATE AGAIN”, Takao yells from the street. “A second pair of eyes on Dai-chan would be great”, Momoi sighs, sitting with him at a Café. “Promise me you will think about it”, Akashi commands through the phone. But Kuroko won’t. Kuroko won’t leave Seirin, even when the offers are very tempting.

Kise: everyone in the generation of miracles is very straight. We all like women, to varying degrees.
Everyone on the miracles: for sure, for sure.
Kise: like, not because we are stereotypical japanese boys, or athletes, or anything but just. Women, right?
Miracles: totally.
Kise:....
Kise:... But. Kurokocchi. Exceptions should be made for him. Am I right?
Miracles, completely on board: Oh yeah, 100%
Kise: like. it's not gay if it's an obsession.
Miracles: LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK

TW⚠️: verbal abuse
Sleepover!!
The Generation of Miracles won a game once again, giving no mercy to their opponents. To celebrate and perhaps give them more motivation to practice, Akashi came up with a little reward. A sleepover at his house.
He first made sure that his father was going to be gone for at least three days. This wasn't a struggle since he travelled a lot due to business, and it just so happened that in his schedule he was going to be in America for that next weekend. After all, he would basically have to sneak them in since his father would NEVER allow him to do such a silly thing.
"Gather round, everyone," he announced to the boys the Monday after their victory. The rainbow stood in a circle around him, Akashi admittedly trying to hide his excitement.
"We have won multiple consequetive games thus far. And as a small reward, if all of you are up for it, I'd like to celebrate our victories with a night spent at my house this weekend," Akashi said with a plain smile. The rainbow seemed to be up to it, judging by the muttering of excitement between the five.
"Perfect. A driver will pick you up at your respective houses at around 2pm."
When Akashi got home, he immediately told all the employees at his house at the news. They were all very excited for Akashi, especially that they hadn't seen the boy so enthusiastic about something for so long. All of them of course, vowed not to speak a single word to Akashi Masaomi.
That weekend came quite slowly, Akashi might say. But as the doorbell rang, he was almost running to the door. He took a deep breath and straightened his clothes, opening the door for the five colors of the rainbow in front of him.
"Shiii- your place is nice, Akashi! You never told us you were rich!" Aomine looked around, his eyes locked at the ceiling as they all went in. Akashi didn't comment.
"Come in, welcome and make yourself at home. I will lead you to the rooms where you will stay," he said as they flooded the foyer.
"Akashicchi, this is so cool! Thanks for letting us stay!" Kise said, excited and loud. Aomine was about to touch one of the vases near the entrance when Midorima's voice boomed.
"Don't touch that, Ahomine!" he hissed, the boy immediately withdrawing his hand. Midorima, who had been in Akashi's house many times due to the business relations of their father, already went forward to where the rooms were.
"Aka-chin, do you have snacks?"
"Yes, yes. But that will come later, Murasakibara. Come, you must settle down first, all of you," Akashi said, leading the rainbow into a hall on the 2nd floor.
"These five rooms are all next to each other with a private bathroom and a closet. Everything is provided, all you need to do is press the button by your bed and one of the staff will bring it to you."
And so all of them chose their bedrooms, Akashi shaking his head at Aomine and Kise, who were bickering about who should get what room.
"Aomine-kun, Kise-kun, all the rooms look the same." Kuroko came up from behind them, the two suddenly shouting in surprise.
"Kurokocchi?!"
"I didn't even notice you in the car!"
"I was there the whole time..."
"How did you know that they were all the same?"
"I checked them one by one while Akashi-kun was talking."
"Shall we?" Akashi said, starting to lead them to the kitchen where they would eat first. But suddenly one of the staff came running towards him looking panicked. She approached Akashi, whispering in his ear.
Akashi couldn't help but laugh to himself as the five finally went into their separate bedrooms, taking a deep sigh. He was looking forward to their activities for the afternoon and the night. Soon enough, they popped out of their rooms one by one, Kise being the last because he had to style his hair.
"Seijuro," a booming voice echoed the halls, and the boy's body went cold.
"Seijuro-sama, I didn't know about it- he just arrived-!"
"What do you mea-"
"Father... I did not know you would be home." Akashi said as nonchalantly as he could. Masaomi looked down at Akashi with a stare, and only his son would realize that it meant he was in deep, deep trouble.
"Yes well, there were complications with the flight. These are your friends, I assume?" he turned his attention to the rainbow behind him with a smile dipped in poisoned honey.
"Yes Father, they're-"
"So I've heard. The Generation of Miracles. Lovely meeting you all. And Midorima-kun, lovely to see you again," he smiled at the rest, while the boys shyly waved. He was intimidating, even for them. Midorima merely bowed, his lips slightly pursed.
"Forgive me, but I have a few matters to attend to. Have fun, and please make yourselves at home." he smiled to the rest, leaving their prescence. It was silent for a beat, but Akashi couldn't hold onto it longer.
"Shall we go eat? The staff has prepared all of your favorites," Akashi turned to them with a genuine looking smile.
"Is there squid ink pasta-?" Murasakibara's eyes lit up, oblivious to the previous heavy air that filled the room.
"Yes, of course there is. Follow me," Akashi said with a soft chuckle.
(timeskip to that night...)
(If anyone wants me to write about the fun things they did that night feel free to request but this particular one-shot is focusing on Akashi)
"Goodnight everyone, I do hope you enjoyed this night. We will be waking you up at 10am for breakfast," Akashi said, a chorus of "goodnights" echoing the hall. As the last person went into their respective rooms Akashi clenched his fists, knowing he had to talk to his father. He had no choice but to, so he took a deep breath to give himself courage, and went over to where his father's office was.
Aomine had his ear pressed against the door, listening as Akashi's footsteps receded and was finally out of earshot. He very quietly opened the door and smirked, looking around as he tiptoed to Kise's room.
"Kise. Oi, Kise!" he whispered through the door, knocking as quietly as he could without being heard by the others. But after a few minutes of disturbing him, Aomine concluded that he was already asleep. So boring.
He decided that he would do this himself. The mischevious little bitch started to roam around the entire house. The halls, the floors, the rooms (that he could open) and everywhere he could go within the building. He visited an entire library, a cinema room, a music room, and many other things that he found entertaining in the middle of the night. At one point he was scared out of his wits as he felt a breeze and some whispering in a particular hall, so he ran away as fast as he could from it. It was only the staff and they had opened a window, but he didn't know that.
He ended up near a door that was rather large and fancy looking, and a sign that says Masaomi Akashi.
"Must be his office..." he whispered to himself. Aomine was about to leave and find his way back to his room when suddenly he heard faint shouting that came from that same office.
"...and you hadn't even told me! What made you think that this was something acceptable, Seijuro? Do you think this is something that an Akashi would do?!" Masaomi's voice was loud enough that he could hear it from the outside.
"No, father."
Aomine froze at the realization. Immediately he pressed his ear against the door, eavesdropping at their conversation. He made sure to hold his breath, just in case they wouldn't hear him from outside.
"Have you even finished your work for this weekend?"
"Yes father, I have."
"Do not tell me lies, child." he hissed, showing the list of things that Seijuro had to do that weekend. He looked at the list wide-eyed; he was sure that he completed everything he had to do in advance so that he would have the weekend free.
"What?! But I have finished everything!" Akashi panicked, reading the tasks one by one. But of course, Masaomi had just added new things to his list to punish his son even more.
"Read with your eyes, boy. You clearly are not finished. You will not sleep until you complete every single task I have delegated to you, do you understand?!"
"...Yes father," Akashi held his head low.
"And I want everyone out first thing in the morning, or you will go with them."
"Yes father-"
"You are a constant source of embarrassment to this family. Do you realize that, Seijuro? Tsk... it baffles me how someone of my blood could turn out to be so utterly incompetent." he hissed, pacing around his office. Seijuro took it all, being used to these words from his father. That didn't mean it didn't hurt.
"You will never, not in your entire life amount to anything of significance. I expected more from a child of mine, a child of your mother's. But clearly I was mistaken. She would be disappointed if she were still here."
No insults cut deeper than when it was forcibly wielded by his mother.
"I'm sorry, Father." Akashi said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"This motherfucker..." Aomine was furious, clenching his fists. He was his friend, and it made his blood boil that his father would say those things to his own son. He wanted to curse Masaomi out with his fists, and at this point he didn't care anymore. He reached out to the doorknob when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"You'll only make it worse, nodayo." Midorima whispered from behind him, which snapped Aomine out of his rage.
"What the fuck- why are you here?!" Aomine hissed, the two stepping away from the room so they wouldn't be heard.
"I um... I n-needed to find the bathroom, nanodayo..." Midorima adjusted his glasses, looking away. He was out here to look after Akashi, knowing that he would be in trouble. Aomine just shook his head at him, looking over at the office door.
"Then... what are we supposed to do?? We can't just let him do that...!"
"Unfortunately we can't do anything, nodayo..." he whispered, looking around. Aomine clicked his tongue, clearly pissed off about the entire situation.
"Come on, let's just go to bed. It will be worse when we get caught, nanodayo..." he whispered, and Aomine sighed as he nodded.
"Fine..." he muttered, the two tiptoeing on the way to their rooms.
"Back there... you sounded like you knew about this, Midorima." Aomine looked at him as they walked.
"...Somewhat. My father and Akashi's father had been business partners for a while now, so I know a thing or two about it, nanodayo."
"So you're rich too?"
"That's not the point nanodayo!" Midorima hissed, and Aomine laughed quietly.
"Aomine? Midorima? What are you two doing still awake?" Akashi suddenly showed up and walked over to them, the two freezing in their place.
"Uh oh-"
"Shit- uh... we were trying to find the bathroom!" Aomine blurted out, using Midorima's excuse. The green-haired teen gave him an annoyed look.
"Right... each room has a private bathroom." Akashi said, furrowing his eyebrows in suspicion. The two stayed silent, Akashi laughing softly.
"Feel free to explore if you like. Just make sure you have someone with you," he said with a smile. Aomine and Midorima looked at each other, wondering how Akashi could manage to put on a mask after all that verbal abuse.
"How about you?" Aomine asked suddenly, not really knowing where he was going with this statement.
"Ah, I... need to do a few more things. You two can go ahead,"
"Actually, we can't really sleep. Mind if we go with you?" Aomine said, glancing at Midorima. Perhaps what Akashi needed was just someone by his side.
"You may if you like... however you will find it rather boring I'm sure," he warned them, leading them to his room anyways.
"I don't mind, nodayo," Midorima said, pushing his glasses up and looking away.
"Well... if you insist." he shrugged, opening the door to his room and letting them in. His room was what Aomine had expected it to be; neat, tidy, and big. Immediately he rummaged through Akashi's shelf.
"Are you actually a man, Akashi? You don't have a single porn mag, here,"
"Do not regard me as a consumer of such vulgar content." Akashi hissed, sitting at his desk. Aomine let out a laugh, and Midorima just shook his head sitting on one of the chairs. The redhead couldn't help but chuckle to himself, turning around to focus on his work.
"Do not hesitate to tell me if you need anything," he said, shifting his concentration to the tasks in front of him. He smiled to himself, hearing Aomine and Midorima bicker and talk to each other in the background. He was happy that the two were there with him.
He closed his laptop, taking a deep sigh. He glanced outside, the sky still completely black. Akashi stretched a bit, turning around to see Aomine passed out on the floor, and Midorima passed out on the chair that he was in. He chuckled softly, getting some extra blankets and placing them on top of the two gently, not wanting to disturb his slumber.
It was worth it. He thought, remembering the events earlier where he was being screamed at by his father as he snuggled under his own covers on his bed.
I was able to spend time with them.. that's all that matters.

Reading Through Glass
Author's Note: Just a heads up for anyone who finds this fic based off the tags, but this is a tickle fic, so if it's not something you're interested in, then feel free to move on. I haven't written in a few months, but I'm happy to share this with people. Tagging @myreygn, @italeean, and @wertzunge because we need more knb content in this community. I hope you guys enjoy!
It doesn’t take a genius to know that something is off with Kise. He doesn’t hide his emotions or keeps silent about his feelings.
Defeat isn’t new to him anymore. The practice match against Seirin, the Inter-high quarterfinals against To-oh, the Winter Cup semi-finals against Seirin, and now the third-place game against Shutoku.
Losing to Shutoku shouldn’t have bothered him, but the emotions collecting in his chest feel like a pressure cooker on the verge of exploding. The thought causes a fresh set of tears to come to his eyes.
It’s just so frustrating.
In the past games, at least he could contribute to the team. This time he was powerless to help. And it was his fault. He let himself down, but more importantly, he let Kaijo down.
Kise wanted to win with Kasamatsu, Moriyama, Kobori, and Hayakawa. Was that so much to ask for?
Seirin had already beaten Rakuzan and was crowned the winner of the Winter Cup. Winning with the third years wasn’t feasible anymore. If only he could have had another chance. Maybe if he had let his injury heal instead of practicing through the pain against his coach and teammates’ advice, things would have been different.
He loves the game, and he loves playing with the team he has or rather, the team he had.
Kise had snuck away from the rest of Kaijo with the excuse of needing to talk to some fangirls he had promised to hang out with before they left to go home, earning him a couple of kicks to the face from Kasamatsu.
Almost everyone had left the stadium, but here he is, wallowing in his childish self-pity. He takes a deep breath and punches the wall in front of him, hard enough to feel the sting, but not enough to bruise the skin.
“Kise?”
He wonders how easy it is for Kuroko to slip away unnoticed.
“Kurokocchi,” Kise replies with the biggest smile he can muster, “What, uh, brings you here? Shouldn’t you be celebrating with the rest of Seirin?”
“Well…I saw you leave earlier,” Kuroko says, placing his bag on the ground and taking a step forward. His eyes flicker over to the open spot on the floor near Kise next as if asking him permission to sit down.
Kise only scoots over in response and continues staring at the line between the baseboard and the wall. He hears the faint squeak of Kuroko’s shoes on the floor as Kuroko sits down next to him.
“I know something’s bothering you,” Kuroko continues, “Talk to me?”
Kise doesn’t miss how Kuroko turns his statement into a question to give Kise the option of opening up. He sighs, saying, “And you said we weren’t best friends at Teiko.” He knows he can’t hide anything from Kuroko. The rest of the generation of miracles know it too. Kuroko can see through them like glass, reading how they feel and what’s on their minds. It was a blessing to them, but he supposes it’s now a curse. “You taught us so much, didn’t you?”
“I treated you like everyone else, but, yes, this was something I wanted you guys to understand.”
Kise figures that reading each other somewhat goes both ways since he already knew Kuroko’s answer to his comment, knowing Kuroko isn’t saying I told you so or trying to make fun of him. He finally feels his cheeks growing wet. “I guess that’s why you quit, huh? I get it now.” He’s full-on sobbing now, face turned towards the ground with his tears falling like raindrops on the ground. “Why does it hurt so much more now?”
“Because winning is more than a trophy or an expectation.”
Kuroko has always known what the rest of his team needs, and right now, Kise doesn’t need a shoulder to cry on or a warm hug. He only needs someone to sit with, who can help him figure out his emotions and knows the right things to say and do. And Kuroko is just the person he wants. He knows Kuroko will always be there for him. For his teammates.
For his friends.
“Can you breathe with me?” Kuroko asks.
Kise’s sure Kuroko can hear how loud his heart is beating. It’s pounding in his head, and he almost misses Kuroko’s question. He wants to listen, he really does, but his body isn’t cooperating. His breaths come out as shuddering gasps for air instead of the even breathing pattern Kuroko wants him to match.
They sit in silence for a few minutes, only the sounds of a ticking clock and their breathing echoing around the hallway. When he’s finally able to maintain the same rhythm as Kuroko, he feels better. Not good but better.
He lets the silence continue for a couple of seconds longer before saying, “Thanks.”
Kuroko doesn’t offer you’re welcome, or you owe me one because his presence means more than anything he could say.
“Can you tell me the color of the floor?” Kuroko asks when Kise’s breathing is even and less harsh.
“Blue,” Kise replies. He already knows the color of the ground after staring at it for so long; he could even see the faint dark blueish-green hue through his tears.
“What color is your uniform?”
“…Blue.” Well, dark blue to be exact.
“What’s the color of my hair?”
“Light blue,” Kise says with a chuckle.
Kuroko gives him a smile in return. “Do you feel better now?”
“Well…” Kise starts.
Kuroko points to his own cheeks with a grin that makes Kise want to turn his head, but he doesn’t dare break eye contact when Kuroko replies.
“Well?”
Kise feels his neck and ears heating up to match his face. “I-I might feel better if you did the thing.”
Oh? I’m not sure what you mean, Kuroko’s face seems to say.
“Don’t make me say this,” Kise mumbles, “The thing you used to do in middle school, remember?”
Kuroko smiles and sets his fingertips on Kise’s sides.
“Wait. Waahait,” Kise giggles, holding on to Kuroko’s wrists, half sliding down the wall.
Kneeling beside him, Kuroko raises an eyebrow and stops the slight curl of his fingers against his tracksuit.
Kise swears he’s trying not to stop Kuroko, because they both know how much he needs this, but right now, his body is refusing to listen to him. Even though he wants to give Kuroko permission to continue, he’s giggling too hard to get another word out.
“C-cold,” Kise mumbles as his back hits the floor.
Kuroko’s hands haven’t even started moving, but Kise feels laughter starting to bubble up through his throat. He can feel Kuroko’s eyes on him as if saying is this, okay? With a deep breath that ends with more giggles, he nods as fast as he can.
Kise likes to think that he has many types of laughter. Flirty yet coy laughter for his fangirls. Confident and cocky laughter for his opponents when they challenge him. Laughter and smiles to reassure people that he’s okay even if he’s not.
But this laughter is different. It’s carefree and full of genuine happiness and joy.
He can’t see Kuroko’s face, but he can imagine Kuroko’s facial expression based on the one picture Momoi took back at Teiko. The warmness in Kuroko’s eyes and the faint smile gracing his features as he looks down.
When Kuroko’s fingers graze the bottom of Kise’s ribs, he hears himself let out a loud cackle before dissolving into more bright laughter. The tickles on his sides have him curling into a ball, well, as much of a ball as he can manage without knocking himself in the chin with his knees.
Instead of focusing on his self-doubt and anxiety, he focuses on Kuroko’s short nails wiggling up and down his sides. They brush along the small of his back, making him lean into the touch and close his eyes at the pleasant sensations that zing up to his head.
Kise shrieks when Kuroko’s hands meet his stomach, spidering around and around until tears prick at the edge of his eyes. It tickles. It tickles. It tickles.
This time he pushes at Kuroko’s wrists.
Although his waist is still sensitive enough to send him into silent laughter, his stomach is so ticklish that it makes him want to shed from his skin like a snake. He wants to beg for the tickling to stop, but he can already feel the tension leaving his shoulders and neck, so he lets it continue until his vision goes blurry and his cheeks start to hurt from smiling so hard.
Ah.
Kise remembers this feeling. He loves the other members of the generation of miracles like brothers, but their tickle fights usually ended with them ganging up on one person until they cried. When he first joined first string and was still getting to know the others, he didn’t know how to talk to the other members beyond challenging them.
He would have liked to say that the others were welcoming and accepted him without question, but it just wasn’t the truth. Back then, even though their relationship had a rocky start, he had Kuroko by his side.
It would always start with a few words or a glance. A simple talk to me, is something on your mind, or a look that said more than words. Sometimes Kise would confess what was bothering him and sometimes they’d just sit, and Kuroko would offer his advice if Kise wanted it. However, Kuroko always seemed to know what Kise needed.
Sometimes it would end like this, Kise breathless from laughter with Kuroko sitting beside him with a kind smile.
As if on cue, Kuroko’s fingers stop moving, and Kise takes a few deep breaths to keep the residual giggles from escaping his lips.
“Thank you,” Kise mutters, accepting the help to sit up that Kuroko offers.
“Are you feeling better?” Kuroko asks, gesturing for Kise to turn around.
“Mhm.” Kise shivers when Kuroko’s fingers crawl from his stomach to his sides and up his back to his neck. With a sigh, he leans forward, arching his back, so it presses into Kuroko’s hands.
Giggles and short puffs of air follow Kuroko’s movements. Fluttering fingers around Kise’s left ear have him scrunching his shoulder and nose up at the sensation while circles that trace the curve of his spine make him giggle into his hands.
Or sometimes those moments from middle school would end like this, with Kuroko drawing shapes into his back until his body and brain turn to mush. It’s relaxing in a weird way.
Kuroko’s fingers move slower and slower until Kise’s breathing evens out, and his head feels like it’s touching the ground.
“Thank you Kurokocchi,” Kise says once more, still not looking at Kuroko.
“This isn’t the last time we’ll get to play together,” Kuroko replies with a voice that makes Kise want to believe him. “We aren’t going anywhere for a while.”
Kise wipes his eyes and smiles back in return. “I suppose you’re right.”
“This isn’t the end of anything, because we can always keep playing each other.”
