Researchers develop proton barrier films using pore-free graphene oxide
Kumamoto University's research team, led by Assistant Professor Kazuto Hatakeyama and Professor Shintaro Ida of Institute of Industrial Nanomaterials, has announced a groundbreaking development in hydrogen ion barrier films using graphene oxide (GO) that lacks internal pores. This innovative approach, published in Small, promises significant advancements in protective coatings for various applications. In their study, the research team successfully synthesized and developed a thin film from a new form of graphene oxide that does not contain pores. Traditionally, GO has been known for its high ionic conductivity, which made it challenging to use as an ion barrier. However, by eliminating the internal pores, the team created a material with dramatically improved hydrogen ion barrier properties.

Shuri Castle - Burning castle of the Ryukyu Dynasty (Ref)
Shuri Castle, the royal castle of the Ryukyu Dynasty, was once the political, economic and cultural centre of that maritime kingdom. The date of construction of Shuri Castle is not known, but it is thought to have been built in the late 13th and 14th centuries during the Gusuku period.
Until the end of the 16th century, the Ryukyu Kingdom remained independent in turbulent East Asia, as did Korea and Vietnam, but was invaded and ruled by the Satsuma clan (now Kyusyu, Japan), and became a vassal state in the early 17th century.
After several fires and war damage, and repeated rebuilding, the World Heritage Site Shuri Castle was once again destroyed by a sudden fire on 31 October 2019, which lasted about eight hours and destroyed nine buildings and historical heritage sites, including the main hall. It is currently being rebuilt with a view to restoration in 2026.
The first burning occurred in 1453 during the struggle for the throne that followed the death of King Shō Kinpuku of the 1st Shō dynasty (Shiro-Furi Rebellion), when the castle was completely destroyed. The second fire, in 1660, took 11 years to rebuild, and the third fire in 1709 destroyed the main, north and south halls.
After the Ryukyu Disposition following the establishment of Okinawa Pref. by Japanese Government in 1879, the main hall and other buildings of Shuri Castle lost their role as the seat of government and were sold to the Japanese Army's 6th Division (Kumamoto, Japan) as a military camp and then to Shuri Ward (later Shuri City), which used them as school buildings for girls' schools.
It was almost completely destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa (WWⅡ) in 1945 and the construction of the University after the war, leaving only a small portion of the castle walls and building foundations remaining.
Full-scale reconstruction was considered in the 1980s, and the restoration work, which took about 40 years, was completed in January 2019. In October of the same year, a mysterious fire destroyed the castle again.
Shuri Castle, which has been repeatedly persecuted and burnt down but continues to revive, seems to symbolise Ryukyuan culture itself.

After Takashi opens up to his family and friends, life for him and Kaname has never been better. But as graduation looms, their futures are uncertain. They visit nearby Kumamoto to see the universities and Natori-san, but following in Reiko’s footsteps reveals old pain and new peril.
A post-Reveal adventure featuring Natsume and Tanuma, the Fujiwaras being the best, the Horrible Exorcists being only sometimes the worst, the impending end of the Book of Friends, the dangers of feeling bad things for too long, and Nyanko-sensei having to do all the work around here.
I took a short break from the rest of my life and wrote a 54k Natsume Yuujinchou novel! I’ll be posting a chapter a day for the rest of December, and the first two are already up. Please enjoy!

Episode 2 and things already escalating quickly here! Who tf would threaten Takuya over the fake marriage? Like it’s none of the office’s business.. if they say they’re married they’re married that’s the end of it. Mfs treating Anchorage like it’s Syria 😭 you’re gonna get paid and be at a US branch with better work conditions.
Also, we knew they’d have to meet family eventually, but episode 2 and Takuya dad already here!? News travel way too quickly in this universe lmao. Nice fella and seems genuinely concerned about his son. Also it’s cool to see some Kyushu traditions and wedding customs mentioned! My fave part of Japan, particularly Fukuoka.. and Kumamoto prefecture is gorgeous.
Glad we got to see a little of Rika’s true self too. When she’s talking about Maps she really is glowing. I love seeing people talk about things they’re passionate for.
Good episode! Adult workplace romance just hits different

The Bankara Movement (蛮カラ)
Bankara high schoolers. 1929, Kumamoto.
Bankara youth stride through a gate in the early post-war era. 1949, Takushoku University.
In the late 1800s, during the Meiji Restoration (1868–1912), Japan was all about modernizing, and one of the ways the government pushed this was through Western-style clothing. Men’s fashion changed first—shaved heads and topknots gave way to European-style cropped hair. By the mid-1880s, 90% of Tokyo men were rocking a fake-European “randomly cropped” look (散切り頭). Geta (wooden clogs) were swapped for regular shoes and even sneakers, while suits, hats, and ties replaced the old hakama and haori.
For Japan’s high society, wearing Western clothes became the new way of showing they were part of the Civilization and Enlightenment movement (bunmei kaika, 文明開化). The rich and powerful wanted to create a clean, modern look for Japan. By 1898, this whole push for Western fashion became known as the haikara (“high collar”) movement.
But not everyone was into it. The bankara movement grew as a response to all this Western influence. Bankara (蛮カラ) means “barbaric,” and those who followed this style rejected the fancy, foreign clothes, going for a more rugged, traditional vibe. It was especially popular with students and intellectuals who didn’t want to give up Japan’s roots.
The Tonbi Coat
At the same time, the tonbi coat showed how Japan was mixing in Western elements but making them their own. Originally based on the Inverness coat from Scotland, the tonbi was modified to fit the kimono with wide armholes and a cape. Over time, it became so tied to Japanese style that no one even thought of it as a Western thing anymore, to the point that Bankara students liked to wear the tonbi coat over their uniforms as symbol of subversion.
So, while the government was pushing for Western fashion, the bankara movement resisted, and the tonbi coat shows how Japan took some foreign ideas and turned them into something uniquely their own.

Japanese printmaker Gashu Fukami.
Raised in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, Gashu Fukami attended Doshisha University in Kyoto, graduating in 1975. During his time in school he discovered the works of Umetaro Azechi and Takeji Asano. These artists inspired Gashu to pursue woodblock printing in 1977. The following year he traveled to the United States to study at Kaji Aso Studio in Boston. Gashu returned to Kyoto in 1983, holding his first solo show in 1988. By 1997, he had moved to Nagasaki, before settling in Fukuoka in 1999.
Self-carved and self-printed, his colorful works carry the spirit of Sosaku Hanga into contemporary printmaking.

Day 1: Statue Tour Kumamoto
There was a MASSIVE earthquake here in 2016, and as part of the restoration project Oda donated these OP bronze statues to generate tourism (+he gave $8 million). He grew up here.
Each statue has a little story to give narrative to why they are there. Robin is helping at the university bc she's smart, Sanji feeding ppl where the shelter was, Zoro encouraging kids at the local dojo etc. All places hit hard.
The statues are spread out far and wide across the prefecture, so its MEANT to be a challenge to see them all. To collect the souvenir statues is even harder (they do NOT advertise where to buy them, and some are in buildings far, far away from the actual statues!)
Sadly, the mini souvenier statues were almost completely sold out, but I was able to grab a Sanji, Jinbei, and Brook. It was the only true disappointment of the day. Our guide thinks the local gov doesn't really get the goldmine of foreign tourists they would have if they made it easier to plan a trip AND had more exclusive merch available. She is the ONLY PERSON doing these statue tours!
Anyway, here are pics of the first 8! Last two tomorrow

Breakthrough nanoporous material exhibits giant piezoelectric response
Recently a super-strain nanoporous material, barium calcium zirconium titanate composition (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 (BCZT) was created, which showcases an extraordinary piezoelectric response (d33 ≈7500 pm V-1) . This value represents an order of magnitude greater than the traditional piezoelectric materials like lead zirconate titanate (PZT). This study, published in Chemical Science, marks the first investigation into the strain dependence of the piezoelectric properties at the nano-level using BCZT. The simple synthesis process coupled with its exceptional piezoelectric capabilities enables nanoporous BCZT to be a highly promising candidate for developing eco-friendly dielectric capacitor and generator for high-density energy harvesting in the future.

:☆゚How I got to study in Japan
─── ・ 。゚☆: .☽ . :☆゚. ───
The process itself was pretty easy for me. As Sojo University is a Partner Univesity of mine I really just had to apply for the spot. After that I barely had to do much else, besides booking a flight.
Booking the flight actually turned out to be the biggest hurdle as we weren't clearly communicated as to when we should arrive or when we would be able to apply for student Visa.
But all went well and we arrived safely in Kumamoto! Luckily we don't even have to pay Tuition nor housing cost as all is being covered by Sojo! We evern wrre picked up by the Teacher in charge of us! Full on service making us feel more than welcome here!
If you wanna learn more about where I study you can check the official Website: here

Two teams that have been exploring their respective cultures finally meet up. Although they are dimly aware of the existence of another group, where are they and what are they doing? When will they meet? The children had no idea where they were going, what they were doing, or when they would meet. As the two teams sit across from each other, they look excited but also slightly nervous. After…
