The Tallest Man on Earth Makes Everyone Feel Right at Home
The Tallest Man on Earth – Brooklyn Steel – September 10, 2023
The best way to spend a rainy Sunday night is usually at home, on the couch, in front of the TV or maybe a fireplace, off to bed early for the week ahead. Dancing and singing along to high-energy folk-rock with a thousand or so other people at a club in Williamsburg is not quite that, but somehow the Tallest Man on Earth’s gig at Brooklyn Steel as the rain steadily fell outside had that comfortable, cozy-at-home vibe. The kindling for the fireplace was provided by Andrea Von Kampen, who opened the show. Playing solo with a crisp acoustic guitar, she proved to be a storyteller extraordinaire, drawing laughs in between her warm narrative songs.
Kristian Matsson, aka Tallest Man on Earth, bounded onstage like a mythical creature — a sprite or a satyr — with a mandolin and a restless energy, opening solo with “Like the Wheel,” appropriately singing, “And on this Sunday someone’s sittin’ down to wonder/ ‘Where the hell among these mountains will I be?’” The band joined in for the following “Sagres,” loosening up the audience, crackling like a log on the fire. Over the course of the set, the quartet would morph with new combinations of instruments — guitar, violin, keyboards, bass, drums — creating variations on their sound, two guitars twisting nifty riffs on “Bless You” (Matsson singing, “I dance with a wrecking ball”), “Looking for Love,” adding a little more reverb and plunk on guitar countered with a fiddle, and “Major League,” centered on the sound of the banjo.
Later Mattson would again play solo, including on the piano, belting out “Henry St.,” the title track off his latest album, a warm at-home-in-NYC cup of herbal tea that the crowd sipped happily. The three-song encore felt designed to make sure everyone in attendance got to hear their favorite song before going home, peaking with a solo-but-energized version of “King of Spain.” It was raining harder than ever as the audience filed back out, not quite cozy, not quite at home, not quite off to bed early for the week, but still not a bad way to spend a Sunday night. —A. 15 April 2023: Henry St, The Tallest Man on Earth. (Anti-, 2023)
I've followed Swedish singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson for nearly 15 years; here we have another new release from him. In 2022 he released a download-only covers album called Too Late for Edelweiss, and at the time I was irritated that there were no physical copies. This would be remedied in mid-2023, but when Henry St was new those plans were unknown to me and it felt odd skipping Edelweiss.
At any rate, above are the front and back covers of Henry St.
Below are both sides of the inner sleeve.
Last, here are both labels.

Too Late For Edelweiss The Tallest Man On Earth (Anti) (released in 2022 as a download only, finally released on physical media worldwide in 2023)
When COVID came to town, musicians worldwide had to figure out new ways to make money since touring was out. some, like Robyn Hitchcock, started a Patreon program and for a small amount of cash (five bucks, if I remember correctly) you could get some downloadable songs from his vault. Eventually this parlayed into a weekly live performance for one hour. Some artists, like Kristian Matsson aka The Tallest Man On Earth, just did live shows on youtube without charging anything. I watched a couple of them and they proved to be interesting. Comments from the audience flew across the screen as people conversed with him and he with us, treating us to songs of his own and a multitude of covers. One show he did he opened with Emmylou Harris' Where Will I Be and no one was familiar with it but yours truly. He highly recommended people investigate her album Wrecking Ball. That song doesn't figure on this covers album made during the pandemic (hence the album cover where he is covering his face) but many of these songs he did perform live on his youtube show. I've had this on download since I preordered it and I've played it only about three times, but I do enjoy it.
When I returned home from Chicago, this was one of three albums waiting on my upstairs steps. The above photos show the album cover, the gatefold and then the back of the album. It is pressed on white vinyl and you can see both shots of said vinyl below.
The photos of the label on both sides close out the entry.

Review of Henry St. | The Tallest Man on Earth: the best folk of modern times
The Tallest Man on Earth dusted off his folk to create a work, Henry St.which stands out from his previous fabulous albums and makes him shine. Posted at 4:00 p.m. It may not be the best album among the six that Swedish Kristian Matsson has offered us since Shallow Grave in 2008. But almost. If we disregard the nostalgic attachment that the artist’s admirers (like us) might have for his first…

This is the fire of leaving pains, when the love is gone, but the need remains. Into the shivering cold of day, when the house is gone, but the street remains. I guess it's true. I guess these rivers never knew. I'll sing of seasons 'til you turn me off. I see their way of letting go. They'll be the same, and whatever changes, these changes I know.
