André Barcinski & Silvio Gomes: Sepultura: Toda a História (1999)
Sorry to do this again, but my favorite book about Brazil's greatest heavy metal band, Sepultura, was written in Portuguese (and doesn't yet appear to have an official English translation) by André Barcinski and Silvio Gomes.
This proved to be an ideal pairing, as Barcinski had put in years of quality work to establish himself as one of Brazil’s top rock critics, while Gomes had worked as a roadie and production manager for many artists, including Sepultura, starting in 1984.
The title translates to "The Whole Story," and while the publication date of 1999 obviously no longer supports that assertion, this is frankly the entire story that matters, seeing as Sepultura had already peaked AND splintered acrimoniously by then.
Plus, the authors' greatest achievement here was providing unprecedented detail about the Cavaleras’ early days as rebellious young metal-heads who almost literally dreamt Sepultura into existence, even before learning to play their instruments.
Barcinski and Gomes proceed to trace the band’s gradual but steady rise to global fame from the welcome perspective of fellow Brazilians, who could hardly believe Sepultura's career accomplishments as they grew from strength to strength into the mid '90s.
Until that dream finally did turn into a nightmare at the end of 1996, when 3/4 of the band’s decision to dismiss manager Gloria Cavalera drove her loyal husband Max out of Sepultura to form Soulfly, and left the authors to merely conjecture what might yet follow, once Derrick Green was hired to replace him.
As we know now (and pretty much guessed, way back then), the music produced by both camps was never quite equal to the sum of Sepultura's parts, and not even respectable reconciliations like Cavalera Conspiracy will ever change that.
But, at least for a brief moment in time, music fans got to experience the near-miracle of seeing an extreme metal band from the Third World almost (A)rising to the very top of the global rock scene, behind the gruffly barked lead-in of "Um, dois, três, quatro!"
Featured Records:
Sepultura: Beneath the Remains (1989)
Sepultura: Morbid Visions (1986)
Sepultura: Chaos A.D. (1993)
