Hi :D
Just curious, how much English do they use in CV, and how are your non-Portuguese speaking co-workers doing?
hi anon! good question
i think that english is used in businesses that deal with international customers / co-workers. because tourism is the main economic activity, that means that there's always a good chance that someone speaks english near you. every restaurant has at least one english-speaking waiter and my non-portuguese-speaking cohort work at either a university or an org w international advisors, so they've been okay (worst case scenario, taking turns on a phone with google translate always does the trick)
also i feel like praia is a city where a lot of people have a cousin in the united states [1] so it's not uncommon to have someone walk up to you in the street and speak english [2] so they can meet you and practice (usually not creepy according to english-speaking pals)
lots of admiration to my roommate bc i feel like she knows the most kriolu out of all of us and took lessons while still in the boston area :))
also the mormon church has been ... increasing their presence across different pockets of africa, cabo verde being one of those places. any book-carrying white guys in a button-down shirt and dress pants will speak english. there's also americans / european union members who do missionary work here :(
---
[1] if you visit, u can make a day-drinking game out of the number of boston celtics, los angeles lakers, and chicago bulls jerseys you see. i've also seen the "wicked smahhht" shirt and a boston medical center tote bag lol
[2] shoutout to that old man that said that ppl from boston don't know how to speak english correctly (pronouncing "boston" as "bost-in", etc.) lol

dash dict 004: fixe (kriolu kabuverdianu)
just realized that i keep forgetting to add on to this tag oops
but in my journey of trying to learn cabo verdean creole, i've come across a lot of portuguese that's spelled phonetically (which is nice ig) but !! i will always appreciate learning slang that is less directly related to europe <3
i'm not sure about the origins of "fixe!" (pronounced FEE-sh-ee), but it generally means "cool!". below are examples
---
me, seeing a cool shirt: ey! tua camisa é fixe! (hey! your shirt is cool!) random guy on the street, learning that i lived in brazil: aaaa, brasil é fixe! (ohhhh, brasil is cool!) the waiter, after hearing us tell the new student about "fixe" and other slang: e aí, comida é fixe? caipirinha fixe? kkkkkk (what's up, y'all's food good? the caipirinha good? hahahaha)
#one cool thing abt kriolu is that apparently they're also trying to make the language gender neutral#and have an alphabet have the least amount of letters possible#(making all 'c' and 'k' sounds go under 'k' etc)#hopefully they start teaching it in schools too#(lots of ppl have been pushing for it)#dash rambles#dash dict#kriolu#cabo verde#cape verde#kabuverdianu#kriolu kabuverdianu#kriolo#kriola#praia#santiago

If I start biting raving maiming know that it is bc my dad insisted on his mom visiting for two weeks and less than 24 hrs after her arrival she is already driving him crazy. I was originally going to dodge a few bullets but I have been called in by my mother to help her not go insane so now we All have to go crazy.
#she doesn't speak English and my dad never taught me either French or Kriolu so we basically just stare at each other#and then when she does talk she drives my dad insane#i know just enough French and just enough Kriolu to catch a few words but not enough to have a conversation#we're just sitting here watching the french news on tvmonde and theyre talking abt police brutality in senegal so its not exactly chill#disgruntled octopus
