On Friday morning, Sudeep’s day began with a conversation with Bangalore Times. He appears tired; he has, after all, been busy shooting in Hyderabad for Kotigobba 3, and making weekend trips to Bengaluru for his hosting duties on Bigg Boss Kannada, while also busy promoting his next outing in Bollywood — Dabangg 3. Yet at the first mention of the Salman Khan-starrer, he is as bright and chatty as ever. Amid quick bites of breakfast — a bowl each of boiled eggs and fresh tomatoes and strong coffee — he spoke to us about Dabangg 3, his choice of films, Salman Khan, etc. There is a lot of buzz surrounding Dabangg 

3. What can Kannada audiences expect of the film?

Kannada audiences will get from Dabangg 3, what every other film aims to give — entertainment; sometimes you succeed at it, and at others, you don’t. What’s working for Dabangg 3 is the excitement surrounding the combination that has collaborated. Salman Khan is a big name in Indian cinema, and for someone from here (the South) to play villain in his film is a major deal. Not that others haven’t done it before; Prakash Raj has been a part of the franchise. But I have a certain name and standing in the film industry in the south and that is, I guess, creating a buzz. Kannada audiences are also intrigued to see what I have done in this film. At the end of the day, what everyone has to remember is that Dabangg 3 is Salman’s film — he is the hero and he will emerge victorious. That is a given, but what will be interesting is how he gets there. Audiences want to see how our scenes together work out, the dialogues we trade, the shirtless fight, etc. Chulbul Pandey (Salman’s character) is the excitement of the franchise — always. Zero logic and good entertainment.

What made you take up Dabangg 3?

I have been around for 24 years, and after so much time, it is an exciting opportunity to meet and work with new people. Everyone in the industry is working towards a certain end; you can’t be hero forever. So, when you get the chance to collaborate with someone else, you’ve got to do it. It’s nice to look back and see this progress, instead of a diary that only has your name in it — Who did you work with? Me. What did you do? I did everything with me. Who is your favourite actor? Me. Who is a superstar? Me, etc. You should have other names in that diary — good and bad. But they should be people who have achievements to their credit. Ultimately, you get the satisfaction of having worked with good actors and technicians in a new setting. So, gather it and go home. If I had thought about what people will think about my choice of films, I would have never done Eega. All that matters is if the work coming your way excites you; if it doesn’t, don’t do it. Don’t do it just because a big name is associated with it. If the big name and what comes along with it excites you, do it.

So, you are feeling a lot lighter these days?

I felt lighter earlier too. I used to work under stress earlier, which used to get to me. Now, I work under pressure, which I enjoy, as it is easy. I have been detached from all this extra baggage for a while now, which is why you see the intrigue behind my films. Pailwaan, for instance, was not about a star’s film, it had a lot of good elements in it. Going and being antagonist in a film is not difficult at all, it is actually nice to be bad (smiles). One thing that everyone associated with the Kannada dubbed version of Dabangg 3 have said is that a lot of effort has gone into making it feel as good as a Kannada film. It also puts the focus on the issue of dubbing into Kannada… My contribution to this was only when I was asked whether certain voices would suit the actors onscreen and we have tried to get it as close to the original, even for Salman. But getting people to accept a dubbed film as a Kannada movie has to come from within. You can’t force that on them. The issue here is not Kannada films, but the language. The fact that they are looking at Kannada as an important factor in the larger scheme of things is the bigger deal. Look at a film like Terminator, which is coming from the biggest industry in the world. They don’t necessarily need to make the effort to release it in Kannada, but they are trying to reach people in their own language and that is commendable. You need to stand by the effort — they want to speak your language.

How has working on this film changed your equation with Salman? He has a huge fort around him, which comes by virtue of his work and his experiences with people in the industry. But if you spend time, and he allows you to get under his radar, you will actually see a very simple man. He picks his people carefully. It’s not that you can go to him, pretend to be something and expect to get into his circle. Once you are in his zone, he will be there for you through thick and thin. When we started working together, I was welcomed very warmly. I began shooting for the climax, and a few days later, he invited me over to his place. I ended up spending a lot of time with him during the making of the film and I realised that once you get into that zone, he gets very protective of you. In that sense, I would say, our equation is very good now.

The audience will hear Salman Khan’s much-loved character Chulbul Pandey speak Kannada this year. The third film in the Dabangg franchise, Dabangg 3, which is scheduled for a December release, will be dubbed in Kannada. This will be the first mainstream film from Bollywood to be dubbed into Kannada after dubbing to the language resumed a couple of years ago, following half a century of protectionism. Sources in the film team confirmed the development which is said to have been taken by none other than Salman Khan and brother Arbaaz Khan, who are also producing the film. Kannada star, Sudeep, is part of this film and essying the role of Sikander Bhardwaj, the antagonist. The actor is likely to dub for his role in Kannada himself. Sudeep is also part of the Telugu historical film Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy which is also set to release in Kannada simultaneously. SyeRaa is likely to release in October. What makes Dabangg 3’s Kannada version special is that it will be the first time the Dabangg series is being dubbed. The first film of the series, Dabangg, was remade in Telugu by Pawan Kalyan as Gabbar Singh. There was a sequel too, but it was not based on Dabangg 2

Prabhu Deva is directing Dabangg 3 and had suggested Sudeep’s name for the antagonist’s role. The Kannada actor joined the shoot in May this year. He has been part of the shoot in Mumbai over the last few months along with shooting for the Telugu film in Hyderabad and his two Kananda films; Pailwaan and Kotigobba 3. On Saturday and Sunday, Sudeep was spotted shooting for Ravichandran directed Ravi Bopanna in Bengaluru in a guest role.
