Digimon Adventure Week Day 1 - Favourite Digidestined

A little late to the game, but oh well. Here goes day 1.

So, I went with Tai and Izzy. I don't really dislike any of the Digidestined. Each do have their qualities they bring to the team. Some I like for their personality, some for their design. Like, I do like Mimi's design, but I am not the biggest fan of her character (especially that time she abused the Gekomon's hospitality). And each of the other children have some really low moments. But Tai and Izzy gave me the least moments where I was frustrated with them. And I think they also show the most growth during the show. I like Izzy's smarts, and I like how Tai truly has leadership qualities. And that without the annoying dumb but overpowered protagonist shenanigan going on as other series have. He can be smart too, actually, like when he wondered who send the rocks flying that time when Leomon and Ogremon attacked them and Devimon sent some boulders their way. And he also listens to the others' advice 95 percent of the time, not trying stubbornly to have his way no matter what. And Izzy... oh boy, how well he handled the news when he found out he was adopted. Other children might have reacted far worse. But no, Izzy goes on loving his parents just the same, nothing changing from before. And how understanding he is when they finally tell him. Major props, my boy.

Moments I love from Digimon Adventure (1999) - [10/?]

How can I not, this moment remains one of my top favorites in terms of hype and also how cute the older brothers behave: protective, willing to sacrifice or rather to trust in their respective younger sibling love/light/hope, encouraging, taking the lead, responsible, reliable. Very cute aspects to show in their roles of older brother.

Yes, the Taichi Yamato (was that Taito? I forgot) handholding was cute as fuck too; it felt intimate and natural, and I love that in general. I'm a man who since watching things as a kids, love watching other men showing affection and love to each other, whatever that is friendship or romance.

Now damn, did you see how smooth Yamato's "excuse"/line was to grab Taichi hand? No wonder they made him into a casanova when he grew up, he had that talent since then... (Meanwhile the lyrics of the song in the bg matching perfectly is so funny too)

This, including the culmination of their fight against Venom-Myotismon / Vamdemon, probably got me squealing so hard that I always take a time to go back for the Dark Masters arc (which I love because how tragic and dramatic everything is)

Also. I feel that is cute how Koshiro is not only explaining everything like always, but his parents and tentomon are helping as well. Cute family bond of being the ones with brains.

Episode 20 - Ghost Pokemon and the Summer Festival

After a long and roundabout journey, Ash is finally returning to mainland Kanto and already has his next Gym in mind: Saffron City's Psychic Gym. (Hoo boy, you sure you don't want to cut your teeth on Celadon and Fuchsia first, buddy?) But before that, we've got another stop to make.

Maiden's Peak. It's nice to see that Ghost Pokemon are no less horrifying in the anime. A simple Gastly lethally trolling people to ensure a local legend never dies out nearly leads both James and Brock to their deaths. No effect on Ash because he's a child, but the adult men in the cast are easily lured in.

Jessie of all people gets to be the hero here. Firing an RPG into the "maiden" while shouting, "Oy, RESPECT CONSENT." Fantastic.

Gastly kicks everybody's asses, but they manage to stall out until the sun comes up. Rules dictate that Gastly's strictly nocturnal, so they're forced to peace out. I guess that counts as a victory?

Seven young kids go to camp for the summer, and wind up living in a Digital Land...

August 1st is the day when the characters of Digimon Adventure first went to the Digital World, and it ended up becoming an important day to both the characters and the fans. Since this year is also Digimon's 25th anniversary I wanted to do something special and went with an idea I've had on the backburner for several years now. I chipped away at this piece on and off for the past seven or so months had an absolute blast working on it. Happy Odaiba Day, everyone!

Episode 16 - Pokemon Adrift

Oh no, the S.S. Anne is sinking! See, this is why we get off before it leaves port. Grab your HM and GTFO. Officer Jenny leads a fucking sea funeral for Ash, Brock, Misty, Jessie, and James, by name - The five passengers who did not successfully evacuate.

Which is hilarious to me because Jessie and James were here to rob. Apparently they registered on official documents under their real names. They are not very good at crime.

This is a great episode for Team Rocket. We start out learning that in a desperate survival situation such as this, Jessie and James die immediately. Despite being told repeatedly that the ship is underwater, Jessie tries to melt a hole in the wall that they can jump out of. And by wall, I mean floor, which would have been ocean even if they were still floating. Fortunately, their drowned bodies are rescued by Misty's Goldeen.

After being rescued, they immediately attack. However, all the Pokemon released screws up the ship's weight distribution, resulting in the ship being unbalanced from its precarious perch. Misty screams at everyone to put the Pokemon away. Ash protests that Team Rocket will attack them if they do that, to which James enthusiastically agrees. XD

Misty wins out and gets a ceasefire, as well as laying out a plan based on a model of the S.S. Anne she once made. They go "up" to the hull, burn a hole where the metal is weakest, and then tie themselves to Water Pokemon and swim for surface.

Team Rocket only has a Magikarp, so they die immediately. Again. Fortunately, their drowned bodies are rescued by Ash's Pidgeotto.

This episode is amazing. We learn that while the human Trainers have some respect for the sanctity of even an enemy's life, Pikachu is out for blood. Pikachu breaks the ceasefire immediately to Thundershock Meowth out of spite. Later, after the second rescue, the group thinks Team Rocket are dead and give them a respectful prayer for their souls, only to discover that they're still alive. Pikachu snaps their fingers in disappointment that these three are still breathing.

And Pikachu's right to be disappointed because the Rockets only create more problems, when James violently releases Magikarp seconds before they evolve into Gyarados. Gyarados destroys the team's little raft with their signature move Dragon Rage. (40 points of direct damage is a lot for a raft to withstand).

What will happen next!? (Honestly? Plot mermaids. My money is on plot mermaids, a helpful race of behind-the-scenes creatures who work diligently to ensure anyone lost at sea washes up safely on a nearby beach.)
