I am officially starting to work on my Phd applications for admission in Universities in Fall 2025. My target universities are South Korean Universities. So I’ll be filling application starting February 2025 till April 2025. I’ll be much more active on this blog with my rants and experiences about things involving all the possible factors reagrding the application.

I hoe my experience and posts can help anyone who plans to apply to South Korea preferably in the field of Humanities, Lieral Arts and Social Sciences. And specifically in PhD. (That’s my demographic) However, I believe that I can be helpful to people who are going to apply for masters as well.

I know Tim is usually portrayed as a "thinks mayonnaise is proper seasoning" white guy, but I love the idea of mixed Tim, especially half east Asian Tim, and even MORE specifically, half Japanese Tim. Idk why it just makes sense in my brain. Every Tim I write is half Japanese in my mind even if it doesn't make it to the final product.

I also like the idea of white passing, half Korean Tim. Imagine everyone thinking he can't handle spice because they've seen Bruce trying to eat takis and he almost died, but Tim grew up with his mother's kimchi which was made to burn through solid steel and has an unhealthy obsession with spicy noodles (think buldak, shin ramyun, etc). This guy could eat California Reapers like grapes without so much as flushing and is honestly terrifying to witness (i guess this scenario would also work with Japanese!Tim, but tbh I know more about spicy Korean food than spicy Japanese food).

An SNU graduate victimized by malicious, sexually explicit deepfakes of her made by classmates appeals to the court to hold those responsible for the torment of her and women like her for the pain they have inflicted

In a Telegram channel with around 1,300 members, there are individual chat rooms for 70 colleges and universities across the country. The bolded text are names of universities. (captures from Telegram)

“We’re not whores or sluts; we don’t exist to satisfy somebody’s sexual urges. We’re dignified human beings, each with our own careers and dreams.”

That’s part of the statement that Ruma (a pseudonym) intends to submit to a Korean court. Ruma is one of several graduates of Seoul National University whose faces appeared on sexually explicit deepfakes that were produced and distributed by men they had studied with at university.

In July 2021, Ruma was sent pornographic deepfakes displaying her face by an anonymous individual on Telegram. In May 2024, three years after Ruma first learned about the crime, two perpetrators, both graduates of her university, were arrested. The perpetrators are currently on trial, charged with violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.

Ruma first reported the crime to the police in July 2021, but for nearly two years, four separate police stations that looked into the case were unable to catch the perpetrators.

Nevertheless, Ruma didn’t give up. Instead, she teamed up with other victims to track down the criminals. “I was just hoping that nobody else would have to deal with this kind of pain,” she explained.

There have been several reports about the illegal distribution of pornographic deepfakes in certain university communities. The typical pattern of behavior goes like this: Pornographic deepfakes are created using photographs of “friends” or “acquaintances” at school or in the community, distributed on Telegram and shared with the victims as a form of bullying.

These victims are not to blame for what are obviously sex crimes. Nevertheless, they often feel unable to talk about the grievous harm they have suffered from people they know from their schools, jobs and local communities.

There seems to be a lack of awareness in Korean society about the pain suffered by individuals whose photographs have been manipulated to create these sexually explicit images. That is why we are sharing with our readers the statement that Ruma will be submitting to the Seoul Central District Court.   Ruma’s statement to the court

Your Honors,

First of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for allowing me to share my story as a victim before the court. While preparing my statement, I reflected on the three years and one month that have passed from the time I was first harmed until the present.

That was when dozens of pornographic images digitally altered to include my face and videos of men masturbating to them were dropped in my lap by an anonymous account, when I saw multiple perpetrators insulting and mocking me in a chatroom where my photographs and personal information had been shared, and when, not long after that, I came to realize that all this had been perpetrated by people I’d studied with at university.

It turned out that while I’d been working on my doctorate overseas with the hope of shedding light on the lives and language of the underprivileged and helping to improve our schools and other institutions, my own university acquaintances had been calling me a “cum bucket,” “whore” and “slave” behind my back. Confronted with that fact, the world I thought I’d known came crashing down around me.

It was a nightmare having to face people whenever I woke up in the morning. For the first time since I was born, I found myself thinking I didn’t want to live in this world any longer. There’s a single reason I have nevertheless persevered in tracking down these criminals and bringing them to justice: Nobody should have to suffer as I have. Nobody should be objectified simply for being a woman. And nobody should be treated as a tool for soothing the inferiority complex of people such as the defendants in this case.

We’re not whores or sluts; we don’t exist to satisfy somebody’s sexual urges. We’re dignified human beings, each with our own careers and dreams. We must no longer remain silent when people, having forgotten those facts, eagerly commit wicked crimes that they attempt to justify by being online, in the arrogant assumption they will not be caught, and with contempt for the judicial system. We must not condone such people because they undermine trust in our society and devastate the lives of their victims.

Your Honors, if I may speak as the individual who has suffered more than anyone else because of this incident, undoing that harm could take years — indeed, it may take the rest of my life. My personal information and photographs, along with the deepfakes based on them, have already been distributed to any number of random people, and I’ve been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder for more than three years now. In addition, I’ll have to spend the rest of my life in fear and anxiety that numerous people who were involved in the crime but have not been apprehended may still be out there somewhere, still making use of the deepfakes of me.

For those reasons, it is urgent that these two defendants serve a prison sentence that fits their crime and that measures be taken to ensure that even after their release, they will live responsibly without harming other people. That’s the only way I will be able to regain faith in society and recover the strength to go on living. Your Honors, the judgment you render will be the first critical step in that process of recovery.

In consideration of the immense harm this incident has caused me and the dozens of other victims, the many people in our circles of friends and family members, and beyond that, our society as a whole, I earnestly petition you to give the defendants the most severe punishment available, without any clemency.

30.10.2024 Drafting a Plan

Hey everyone, I just realised that it’s already the end of October—when did this year come to an end? Damn. And 2025 starts starts in about two months. Every year around this time, I say that I am not ready. But this time, I feel prepared to step into my future, make a better place for myself, and retake command of my life. I guess this comes with the fact that I have something to look forward to. Every year, I have had things that I wanted to do and hoped for them to happen. ( However, I have had been stuck for a while now, so this means a lot to me— movement and new things.) I am excited to start my PhD in 2025 and move abroad, haha. I have had this conception of an idea since I graduated with my master’s degree back in 2022 that I will do my PhD from abroad. But life had other plans— those came to me right after graduating, and here I am. I took a break in June 2022 and am now working on returning to my education. I was not in touch with academics throughout. The only thing I have done close to academia is learn Korean since last year. Well, that’s a bit of context about my situation.

Anyway, my agenda for today and tomorrow (30th and 31st October) is to PLAN— create the blueprint. I firmly believe that one needs to be great/good at planning or making blueprints if one wants to navigate academics like a pro. Planning is not confined to what you want to do or are expected to do during a semester or while working on a research project, etc. Still, it also involves what you can and how you can do it—it is also about knowing yourself and improving yourself. This process is not only a way to familiarise yourself with everything you need to do. It is also a way to show love to yourself and be kind. I plan to know what to expect and what I want to do— with the certainty of such goals, I feel confident and can prepare early on. Hence, it makes navigation of academics a lot easier. And I hope that all my queens in academia can show their love by being kind and prepared to take on the world.

Coming back to the topic, I have about three months to finish my application— I aspire to make my application stand out through its presentability as an academic who has a lot of potential, outstanding in her ways and what she does, and simultaneously be representative of my personality as a person and academic personality. And all of you know that many things are required for a Phd application (aside from what is needed out of the potential candidate)— it requires documents that show one’s official information about their family, identity, degrees, etc. But it also requires written documents to understand a candidate better—the statement of purpose, study plans, curriculum vitae, research proposal, etc

So, how do I usually approach planning? Well. I make a list of all the things that I need to include in my applications to the universities I plan to apply to— then I’ll break down the process of how I’ll get my hands on those documents, also research and write the documents that are required to do so, and what will my approach towards my supplementary documents be like? Etc. Once I have all of this written in one place— I’ll start by drafting a plan month wise. (XYZ to be done by the end of November/December/January). Let me elaborate for you all through an example; so let’s say I am working on my plan for a Letter of Recommendation:

In November, I will contact the professors I’ll get LORs from, research how to write LOR and write my first draft. In December, I’ll finalise the contents of my LOR and get it approved by the professors (in my country, the professors usually do not draft the entire LORs; they just add or remove certain parts or so.). In January, I plan to get all of my LORs' hard copies in hand as per the guidelines set by the universities and scholarship authorities. I also share my application dates with the professors to tell them when to upload the given LOR online.

I’ll elaborate more if you are confused about how to draft plans. You can use my explanation and draft something according to your time, resources, and the universities you plan to get into and their demands (if you will). If it is not about the application process, I’ll try to draft a separate post about planning and share some points that can be used whenever and in any situation.

Also, one thing that I want to mention is that drafting a plan not only helps me (and you) finish my application on time but also live my life (meaning that it is not just a tool to finish my task on time but also get time to enjoy what my life has to offer other than academia/my career)—for that, I need to be not only be disciplined and mindful of my actions and time I invest in but also be healthy. If I am not healthy, all this planning goes down the gutter. A happy mind and a happy body equals impressive academic performance. So include walking for 20-30 mins a day, going out once, doing something you enjoy, eating meals on time, cleaning your workspace, reflecting on your day and sleeping 8 hours. You can include a lot more. I do, too. ALSO!!! Planning does not mean that you restrict yourself, but blocking time (I am an ADHD girly, and I struggle at time-blocking— so I use checklists and make sure to achieve at least 70% of the tasks I mentioned in it. I try my best to bring consistency to my routine. T.T) that your life starts lacking spontaneity—it is about finding a balance. BALANCE!!!

I am excited to plan and get lost in the adrenaline that organising brings me, haha—I love planning and organising. If it isn’t apparent with the amount of time I said plan or planning in this mid-length post, you should make a drinking game out of it. Please don't (Plan). You’ll get drunk quickly (Plan). Haha!

Ongoing Series - Thai

My Dear Gangster Oppa (Thurs iQIYI) 1 of 8 - Classic unlucky in love failed crush on straight bestie = both v queer and v emo yaoi. I gotta say I like these actors way better in this than their previous series, and maybe that’s because Tew is more like Tul and I just like Meen better when he’s… erm… mean. All of which is to say, this is off to a wonderful start and I am about to lose my very sleep deprived little mind... ready for a ABL ecstasy rant?

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH I CAN'T EVEN.

"I play support because that way everyone is happy to see me show up," might be the single best moment of characterization BL has EVER seen.

Look here, in the grand cornucopia of BL universes this is my metaverse. It's pulp... but relatively high production. It has an established pair that I know I like... but who were given crap before. It's a tidy little script, it's not gonna run too long, and it's ALL the archetypes and tropes I love but rarely see. It's Japan's style otaku plus Korea's style gangster, Thailand's style friendship group, and it arrived out of NOWHERE. It's Korea's IP & money, Thailand's talent, and China's streaming service.

Do we know what the hell is going on?

No we do not.

Do we care when it's this much fun?

No we do not.

This show I why I got into BL.

Dangerous Romance (Fri YT) ep 11 of 12 - I managed to watch most of it on low rez before YT "discovered" I was in Asia and therefore could not be allowed to watch Asian shows. (AKA my VPN failed me.) But it seemed like a good ep.

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) Lucky Love ep 10 of 24 - I enjoyed this 2 part installment, it’s a bit of a sad sack recovery SAGA, but the acting is genuine, the couple believable, and the story felt particularly queer to me. 7/10 but close to an 8. It was really quite charming.

However: Next week looks not good on many levels - it's horror and I spotted guitar. Which is even more horrific. 

Absolute Zero (Thai Weds iQIYI) ep 5 of 12 - do temporal paradoxes exist in Thailand? That is the question. I gotta say Tor (Ongsa) is carrying this show and is doing a really great job, it's just the story itself doesn't resonate with me. Ugh it's so sad.

Is it, indeed, better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?

We only on ep 5 and had a full story arc already, there is A LOT more to go.

Venus in the Sky (Tues iQIYI) 9 of 10 eps - the fact that in losing Sky Venus also lost his surrogate family explains his resulting bitterness a little bit more. I wish we had gotten this back story much earlier. Still stupid pulp made me cry, which of course means it's back in my good books. This story is slow as fuck, but I'm going on a rollercoaster with it.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Kiseki: Dear to Me (Taiwan Tues Viki & iQIYI) ep 11 of 13(?) - I love them, okay? All of them. This is a great sappy classic Taiwanese BL and it is my baby and you can’t take it away from me. MINE. 

You Are Mine (Taiwan Fri Viki) eps 8 of 10 - oh noes it got sad, I thought they would at least would have had drunken sex before the drama. Sigh. Still the kissing was good, as it should be from Taiwan.

If It’s With You AKA Even If I Fall In Love With You AKA Kimi to nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo’ (Japan Gaga) ep 4 of 5 - Amane is so brave. About being gay. Being out. Confessing. Its admirable if scary. Otherwise this ep was pretty slow. 

Bump Up Business (Korea Gaga) 3-4 of 8 - how do I feel about this show? Conflicted. Are OnlyOneOf doing a great job? Yes, actually. Am I enjoying it? No, not really. Is this anyone's fault? I don't think so.

The little linguistic negotiation was cute tho. And we seem to have gotten idols kissing in a BL both in the same group, so that glass ceiling dildo has finally been broken.

NineMill are unexpectedly good, also KB plays a great evil ex. Of the 3, I think only Nine is good enough to go into acting permanently (but he's not tall enough). Still, all hail OnlyOneOf... kings of the "gay concept." You boys make me v nervous but as couple-branding goes, you just out branded Thailand. Mad props baibies. Legit never thought I'd see the day.

Trust Korea to be in it to win it.

What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 1 of 10 - I find this series more fun to binge, so I'm waiting until it completes its run.

I Cannot Reach You AKA I Can't Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai (Japan Tues Netflix-Japan & ????) - in classic JBL fashion, I Cannot Reach You could not be reached. 

Can I Buy Your Love From A Vending Machine? AKA Sono Koi, Jihanki de Kaemasu ka? (Japan cinema release in-country only) - This one is a movie from Japan so in customary fashion who tf knows when (or if) it will get international distribution. Salaryman Ayumu Koiwai just can't tear his eyes away from the strong, muscular man as he checks on the stocks of the vending machine in his office.

One Room Angel (Japan Gaga) - adaptation of Harada’s manga of the same name (which I did not like) about a convenience store clerk who's stabbed, nearly dies, and returns home to find an angel waiting for him. With only 5 eps and a good chance this won’t end happy, I'm gonna wait and let you tell me how it goes.

Day 6/100 of productivity

Work was very, very tiring today. It was super hot in the mall, and we have no AC, so all we could do was hang in there and suffer. Luckily, my coworkers were in a good mood, so we tried our best to have fun.

I didn't go on a walk this morning as I decided to sleep in an extra 30 minutes before having to get up and get ready for work. Unfortunately, that also means I didn't see any cats to pet and take photos off.

I rested well after work, and now I have a lot of energy. Luckily, my desk lamp has arrived, so I can actually work at my desk when it gets dark outside!
