The Finnish Parliament unanimously approved the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between Finland and the United States on Monday.

Under the agreement, Finland will open 15 of its military bases for potential use by US forces and will also allow the US to bring defence equipment, supplies, materials, and soldiers to Finland.

In addition, the agreement will see the creation of certain military zones, which will include facilities to which only US personnel will have access.

The agreement creates a framework for US activities and a more permanent presence in Finland.

MP Anna Kontula (Left) had submitted a proposal calling on MPs to reject the agreement, but her motion did not receive any backing. Therefore, Parliament did not vote on the agreement but approved it unanimously.

MPs had expressed broad approval of the terms of the treaty during a debate on Friday.

Finland's Constitutional Law Committee said in June that the agreement would have to be approved by a two-thirds majority in Parliament, as it affets several aspects of the Finnish constitution.

Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP) has stated that the DCA represents a significant deepening of the relationship between Finland and the US. The United States has similar agreements with more than 20 countries.

Finland began negotiating the DCA with Washington after applying for Nato membership in May 2022, prompted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a few months earlier.

One gets the impression that Israel arrested Kontula merely for being part of a peaceful demonstration on the border, and that she was pressured to sign a document where she would admit a baseless claim that she was endangering security.

Practically all the Finnish coverage of the incident is similar. But one outlet, Ilta-Sanomat, adds a crucial detail:

Kontula intended to cut a hole in the Gaza fence to allow Hamas members to freely come into Israel.

The purpose of the activist group was to challenge the blockade by cutting a hole in the barbed wire. However, the police stopped Kontula's entourage in a roadblock and the group was taken to the police station.

Isn't that the definition of endangering security?

The media is, as always, part of the problem.

An apartment block facade has collapsed in eastern Helsinki. The accident happened in Kontula, at Keinulaudantie 5.

"We don't yet know the cause of the accident," said Marjo Lyytikäinen, chair of the board at the housing company that owns the apartment block.

Lyytikäinen said that people had been in the building's yard at the time of the collapse, but nobody was hit by falling debris. The area has now been fenced off.

Sanna Niemikunnas, who plays oboe in the Radio Symphony Orchestra, was in her rehearsal room on the building's sixth floor at the time of the accident.

"I heard a horrible cracking sound," said Niemikunnas. "I rushed to see what had happened."

Niemikunnas said that the bench underneath the collapsed facade was often used by older people passing the time of day.

"When I got downstairs I realised that there was nothing to be done if people were underneath," said Niemikunnas. "It's amazing that nobody was there at the time."
