Das Unmögliche möglich machen – Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2023

Die größte kontemporäre Kunstausstellung Asiens einer Stadt, die zuvor noch unbekannt schien? 

Kochi-Muziris Biennale ist die größte Ausstellung des Landes. 2010 wurden zwei aus Kerala kommende Künstler, Bose Krishnamachari und Riyas Komu mit Wohnsitz in Mumbai vom damaligen Kulturminister mit der Idee einer großmaßstäblichen Kunstausstellung beauftragt. Ihr Ergebnis war eine Biennale nach Maßgabe Venedigs, die die Kunstszene Indiens zusammenbringen und gleichzeitig erstmals Plattform des Austauschs bieten sollte. 

Die erste Biennale fand ihre Eröffnung am 12. Dezember 2012. Bis zum Tag vor Weihnachten war der Besuch dieser kostenlos, danach wurde eine Gebühr von 50 Rs (damals rund 80 ct) erhoben. Insgesamt wurden die Arbeiten von 80 Künstler*innen aus 50 Ländern ausgestellt, unter anderem auch die Ausstellung „Sightseeing Trip“ des deutschen Künstlers Eberhard Havekost, ein international angesehener zeitgenössischer Künstler. 

Die diesjährige achte Biennale  überzeugt mit einer Vielfalt an Videoinstallationen, Multimedia-Ausstellungen, Zeichnungen, Collagen u.v.m. Unter dem Motto „In our Veins flow Ink and Fire“ und der Kuration von Shubigi Rao hielt die diesjährige Biennale den Anspruch, sowohl freudige als auch dunkle Vorstellungen zu verkörpern und ihnen Raum in der Kunst zu geben. Themen wie Klimawandel, Rassismus, Genderdifferenzen, Sexismus und Identitätsfragen werden von unterschiedlichsten Künstler*innen als Fragen verkörpert. Gleichzeitig werden in Form von Workshop und Diskussionen aber Lösungen gefunden. Auch Studierende hatten die Möglichkeit, für sie aktuelle Themen umzusetzen und für Besuchende frei zugänglich zu machen. Im Manifest der Biennale spricht die Kuratorin von einer Masse, die nur an eine Idee glauben muss, um diese im Denken, Leben und Arbeiten umzusetzen.
